The Castle Restaurant Story:

The Superhero:Richard owns a restaurant that was previously a castle in England. Therefore, he is naturally powerful and sweet-tempered as he has no worries in life. He also has supernatu-ral powers due to the support of a good magic monster that appears only to him whenever he needs in the form of fire. A few years ago, Richard was a poor young boy who always wished to have a good life. One day he went fishing and began to daydream about having a good life, sitting on the bank of a pond. He lost track of time, the day turned into night and it became dark. Suddenly, from nowhere, he saw a fire light up and a magic monster appeared from within the fire. The monster instructed Richard to voice his wish within the next five minutes for his wish to be granted. Richard quickly revealed his lifetime wish to have a good life. The magic monster granted his wish. Thereby, Richard could own a restaurant that was previously a castle. The magic monster also offered to help him at times of need. However, Richard has a weakness that often lands him in trouble. He gets sudden insights about new recipes and always tries to put his insights into action by instructing his Food Service employees to prepare novel dishes using his new recipes, without bothering about the consequences. He always hopes that the magic monster would somehow come to his rescue, if he landed in trouble by serving the dishes prepared from his new recipes to his customers.

The Supervillain:Robert owns a tiny restaurant nearby Richard’s huge restaurant. He always looks very cruel and angry. He is always jealous of the good life that Richard has. Robert also has some magical power. He often complains about Richard’s new recipe insights to the Health Department, so that the Health Inspectors could drop in to inspect his restaurant and close it down for violating food safety rules when his Food Service employees prepare novel dishes using his new recipes. Anyhow, Robert is unaware of the assistance that the magic monster offers to Richard.

One night, Richard was taking a stroll in his garden. Suddenly, he got an insight regarding a new recipe. He decided to instruct his Food Service employees to prepare a novel dish using his new recipe the next day, to stay ahead of his competitors. Robert came to know about his plan from his magical power and decided to complain about Richard’s new recipe to the Health Department. Thereby, he wished to bring down Richard’s restaurant business and flourish his own business. Robert always thought that he too is entitled to have a good life similar to Richard, although he could not afford it. So, he always tried his wicked tricks on Richard to ensure that he suffered a huge loss in his business.

The Adventure derived from The Castle Restaurant Story (The Magic Circle):

The seven primary components of my story (characters, challenges, motivation, setting, obstacles, climax, and outcome) are:1. CHARACTER: Richard is the owner of The Castle Restaurant, which was previously a castle in England. He is powerful and sweet tempered.

2. CHALLENGE: Robert, the villain, challenges Richard to protect his restaurant business by ensuring that his Food Service employees follow the HACCP principles for food safety while preparing novel dishes using his new recipes. Thereby, he should ensure that the Health Inspectors do not close down his restaurant business.

3. MOTIVATION: Richard is motivated by the challenge, as he should protect his restaurant business in order to lead a good life that he always wished for, right from his childhood days.4. SETTING: The story takes place virtually at “Wegmans Supermarket”. Then, the Food Service employees will transfer the skills learned during the Gamification training program to incorporate the HACCP principles to maintain food safety at “The Castle Restaurant” owned by Richard in England.

5. OBSTACLES: Richard should ensure that: •his Food Service employees adhere to the HACCP principles of food safety at all times. •they maintain proper records and documentation of evidence to prove that they are following the HACCP principles for food safety during health inspections. •none of the novel dishes prepared by his Food Service employees using his new recipes result in foodborne illnesses among his customers.6. CLIMAX: Richard seeks the help of his good friend, the magic monster, who plays the role of a “Food Safety Manager” along with his assistant, the “Food Safety Technician” and uses Gamification to teach the seven HACCP principles for food safety to finally resolve the challenge and protect his restaurant business from being closed down by the Health Department.

7. OUTCOME: Richard (the good) ultimately wins against Robert (The evil) by attaining success in his restaurant business.

Engaging and Motivating the Learners during Gamification:

The three motivators that may appeal to my players are: Idealism, Tranquility, and Interdependence. Therefore, I have chosen the following game mechanics based on the motivators.

1. Points: My players will earn points for their team by responding accurately to each of the quiz questions. This will motivate them as they will be recognized as individu-als assisting their team to win the quiz by incorporating the seven principles of HACCP for food safety to prepare safe and wholesome food for the customers. 2. Guilds/Teams: My players will work on the Food Safety quiz in two teams with three individuals per team, as teamwork will fulfill their need for safety and consistency by letting them know who their teammates are on the Food Safety quiz. 3. PvP Event: My players will work on a challenging event in the form of a Food Safety Team Quiz to resolve a real life Food Safety Scenario. This will motivate them as they prefer activities and games that are more practical in nature and help them gain recognition over others.

4. Knowledge Sharing: My players will share their Food Safety knowledge by collaborating with their teammates. This will motivate them by providing a sense of safety and security as they will be working on the Food Safety quiz along with their teammate.

5. Avatar: My players will have the avatar of "Food Service employees" as they will practically assume the role of "Food Service employees" to resolve a real life Food Safety scenario by incorporating the HACCP principles to promote Food Safety.

6. Countdown: My players will have a countdown during the Food Safety Scenario team quiz, as they should respond accurately to each quiz question within 5 minutes. This will force them to arrive at the right decision and provide an accurate response within a specific time span and paves way for competition that results in recognition relative to the other team. 7. Competition and Cooperation: My players will work on the Food Safety scenario quiz in teams. This will motivate them to compete with the other team, as well as cooperate with their own teammates to ultimately emerge as a winning team. 8. Leaderboard (Relative): My players will have a Leaderboard (Relative) that displays the points earned by each team. This will motivate them by revealing their performance relative to the other team.

Please Note: This real life scenario "Food Safety Quiz" can also be converted into a real "Food Safety Competition" in which two teams compete with each other to prepare a dish using a food recipe by incorporating the seven HACCP principles for Food Safety to prepare safe and wholesome food for the customers in a well-equipped restaurant kitchen.

The Method of Gamification:

My adventure is related to a real world scenario of “Implementing the seven HACCP principles for food safety in restaurants”.

The four learning outcomes are:By the end of the Gamification training program, the Food Service employees will be able to: •define the HACCP principles for food safety •comprehend its significance to maintain food safety •incorporate the pre-requisite programs for HACCP principles to maintain food safety •resolve a real world food safety scenario by incorporating the seven HACCP principles to maintain food safety during the process of preparing grilled chicken

Concepts of food safety using Role Play:

1. The concept of food safety in restaurants will be introduced to the Food Service employees through an e-learning module on “Definition of HACCP”. They will play the role of Food Service employees to learn this topic. It will culminate in a scenario-based quiz.

2. The Food Service employees will proceed to the next e-learning module on “Pre-requisite programs for HACCP”. They will play the role of Food Service employees to learn the pre-requisite programs for HACCP. This topic will also culminate in a scenario-based quiz.

3. Case Study: Finally, the Food Service employees will resolve a realistic case/scenario of food preparation. They will follow the seven principles of HACCP to prevent foodborne illness and maintain food safety during the process of preparing a specific food (grilled chicken) to learn the e-learning module on “Introduction to the seven principles of HACCP” with accuracy. In other words, the learners have to interact with three different topics of an e-learning module to resolve a real life food safety problem.

Player Journey during Gamification:

The players will follow the path shown below to proceed from one e-Learning module to the next to complete the Gamification training program and master the hands-on skills of incorporating the seven HACCP principles for food safety while preparing novel recipes.

1. The concept of food safety in restaurants will be introduced to the Food Service employees through an e-learning module on “Definition of HACCP”.

2. The Food Service employees will proceed to the next e-learning module on “Pre-requisite programs for HACCP”.

In other words, the learners have to interact with three different topics of an e-learning module to resolve a real-life food safety problem.

Recommendation for Technology:

I prefer using an e-Learning module to assist the learners complete the whole course. However, this course also works well by incorporating a blended learning approach where the learners use e-Learning to complete the first two modules. Finally, they can resolve the real life food safety case/scenario by participating in a real food safety competition in a kitchen restaurant to incorporate the seven HACCP principles to maintain food safety while preparing Grilled Chicken or any other food product.
