Hard C, Soft C

The letter C can stand for the /k/ sound as in theword cat . C usually stands for the /k/ sound when it

comes before a , o , or u . When letter C makes the/k/ sound it is sometimes called “the hard sound ofC”.

Another sound of letter C is the /s/ sound as in city . C usually stands for the /s/ sound when it comesbefore the vowels e , i , or y . When letter C makes the/s/ sound it is sometimes called “the soft sound of C”.
