PHILIPPE MANNONIDirector of Innovation
It’s the start of a newseason for the GRTgaz OpenInnovationFactory!Since April 1, the Open Innovation approach has been integrated into the newly created Innovation Department. At GRTgaz, the DNA of Innovation is made up of passion, adaptability, pragmatism and a disruptive spirit. Our raison d’être is a collective challenge to identify, enhance and develop the best ideas for innovation, taking risks to seize opportunities! Finding innovative solutions to high-stake business issues is the foundation of Open Innovation at GRTgaz. We need your help: VSEs, SMEs, Start-ups, ETIs, Laboratories, Universities... to respond to our 6 calls for proposals. In five years, we have signed 19 partnerships. These winners have been able to test, develop and deploy their solutions within GRTgaz, get closer to other players in the sector and increase their visibility.

Why participate ?
Your solution was a winner? You are going to sign a partnership with GRTgaz. Your solution will be purchased as is or developed to be adapted to GRTgaz’s constraints. The patents or developments needed to implement it may be co-financed by GRTgaz, which will be your first sponsor. Winners can use the facilities of GRTgaz’s RICE R&D centre to develop and then test their system.
PARTENERSHIPS
GRTgaz undertakes to respect the intellectual property rights of the proposed solutions. Depending on the maturity of the proposed solution, the intellectual property may be discussed at a later date.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY COMPLIANCE
The names of the winning companies appear on GRTgaz’s website, in the section dedicated to the Open Innovation Factory. They are also highlighted on GRTgaz’s various communication channels (media and social networks, press release). The winners are invited to take part in internal and external events alongside GRTgaz. A major prize-giving ceremony bringing together old and new winners is organised: an opportunity not to be missed to exchange with the members of GRTgaz’s Executive Committee, the sponsors involved in this 5th edition of the Open Innovation Factory and our partners (competitiveness clusters, clusters, ...).

«Protecting our staff and
pipelines from electromagnetic phenomena is a
major challenge for GRTgaz»
YOUR MISSION
How to manage the influence of alternating currents on GRTgaz’s transmission system?
CONSTRAINTS
The solution must not impact the cathodic protection applied to the pipes. No impact can be rejected on another system operator. Pipe laying must not be made more complex.
VOLUMETRY
We need a pilot or demonstrator.
CHALLENGES FOR GRTgaz
The solution should alleviate the effects of alternating currents on buried metallic pipelines, by including all stakeholders in the project as much as possible. GRTgaz wishes to make the solution sustainable.
Proximity to high-voltage structures and metal pipelines isbecomingincreasinglycommon. GREEN GAS
Purify a high-pressure synthesis gas
YOUR MISSIONHow do you purify a high-pressure synthesis gas ?
VOLUMETRY
We are looking for a pilot to be tested on a few GRTgaz sites. Depending on the development of hydrothermal gasification, deployment on a larger scale may be considered in a second phase.
GRTgazispromotingandsupportingtheemergenceofthisfuture-orientedindustry, which can treat liquidbiomasswasteandresiduessuchassewage plant sludge, effluents fromindustrialactivities(papermills, foodprocessing, etc.), livestockeffluentsanddigestatefrommethanation. It consists in heating the liquidbiomass at high pressure and hightemperature (between 400 and700°C). The chemical reactionof thisprocessconverts thecarboncontained in the biomass intoa renewable, methane-rich gas.To date, we do not know of anycommercially available solution forpurifyingorupgradinghigh-pressure(250 to 300 bar) synthetic gas fromhydrothermal gasification facilitiesto meet GRTgaz’s specifications byensuring that the pressure of thepurifiedgasishigherthanthatofthetransmissionsystemattheinjectionpoint.

The solution must comply with the standards for the outgoing gas, without emitting carbon monoxide or sulphur. Filtering must be carried out at high temperature (from 400 to 740°) and high pressure (from 200 to 300 bars). The composition range of the synthesis gas is as follows: CH4, H2 (up to 30%) and C02 (up to 20%) in majority, traces of sulphur and C0, potentially other hydrocarbons (to be retained if possible). The solution must be combinable with methanation. It should be as energy efficient as possible.
CONSTRAINTS
For GRTgaz, the challenge is to bring the gas up to standard: H2 < 1%, C02 < 2.5%, pressure > 70 bars, absence of C0 and sulphur. The solution will have to meet the need for purification and methanation (H2 and C02 and CH4 transformation). The concept can be realized on the basis of an existing technology or on the basis of a disruptive technology.

CONSTRAINTS
The solution will have to adapt to the inspection distance and the speed of travel, with the possibility of being used in aircraft between 150 and 500 m altitude. The system must comply with ATEX standards for leak detection in the vicinity of the network. It must be compatible with GIS data and GPS positioning. The solution will have to be reactive in detecting anomalies.

COUPLING
Predicting pipe movements during connections
During connection operations, the pipesmay sometimes be displaced, resulting inmisalignment after cutting, on mechanicallystressedstructures. To date, these movementscannotbeanticipatedpriortocutting. W h e nthissituationoccurs, itmaycallintoquestionthecontinuationoftheconnection.
YOUR MISSIONHow can we foresee possible pipe movements during cuts during connection operations?
VOLUMETRY
The projects concerned are primarily projects for connection to the national transmission network. These are either large-diameter pipelines or surface constrained trench openings. Estimate: around 50 projects/year.
For GRTgaz, the aim is to know the existence of mechanical stresses on the pipe, in order to predict their effects. This will make it possible to limit or adjust the resources needed for connections (e.g. the use of mechanical shovels and anchor blocks).

Success story Alumni laureates: what happened to them?
GRTGAZ CONTEXT
GRTgaz supplies equipment to 130 depots every two weeks. An employee is stationed on site to receive it.
SOLUTION
Consignity has developed a large container to be installed at the entrance to the sites. The carrier deposits a pallet in it thanks to a code that changes every day. GRTgaz staff members retrieve a pallet from it. His gear when he
can with a badge. This solution gave birth to the CELIA project (CEllule de LIvraison Autonome). 8 containers have already been installed since 2018. An installation on 12 new sites is under study.

GRTGAZ CONTEXT
GRTgaz carries out analyses compliance on the biomethane it carries. A fraction of the biomethane production must be sampled continuously for analysis. This sample is a direct loss to the biomethane producer.
GRTGAZ CONTEXT
Increasingly used as a fuel for heavy vehicles, natural gas vehicle (NGV) and bioNGV will play a role in tomorrow’s cleaner mobility. With the network of stations at the heart of the challenge, GRTgaz is therefore considering co-developing a system that is accessible at a reasonable cost and can be installed simply and easily.
SOLUTION
Eiffage Énergie Systèmes-MECI has designed a product to measure the composition of the gas and to verify its conformity and energy content. By pooling several analyses, carried out with a single device, the costs re-invoiced to producers were halved.
SOLUTION
Aktan worked on service design, while Sparklab focused on marketing and market analysis. Together, thanks to their complementary expertise, they found opportunities to democratize access to CNG by bringing supply and demand closer together. The objective is to involve all stakeholders in the value chain in this project.
