SETTING THE STAGE

AFTER WORLD WAR II, AFRICAN AMERICANS AND OTHER CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORTERS CHALLENGED SEGREGATION IN THE UNITED STATES. THEIR EFFORTS WERE VIGOROUSLY OPPOSED BY SOUTHERN SEGREGATIONALISTS, BUT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BEGAN TO TAKE A FIRMER STAND FOR CIVIL RIGHTS.
