AUCTION MARCH 2015MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
2NOVEMBER LEONARD
Recent articles in Australian papers about
the goings on in the fine art world prompted
me to start googling and exploring that
elegant-sounding but often overvalued word
“provenance”. Equally, and recently, I was
also asked to explain provenance and I must
say I struggled to explain myself eloquently
or in any sort of straight forward fashion. So
this is my attempt to provide our readers with
a sobering and straight forward appraisal of
the word and its usage.
To begin with, let’s begin with “mere puff”
which is one of those wonderful old common
law terms devised to describe statements
or terms that should not be relied upon as
either significant or legally material – teeth
whitening commercials come immediately
to my mind as a good example! Basic
provenance in a catalogue, like “Private
Collection, Melbourne” as a simple example,
should be relied upon at face value but the
important point is that, in isolation, it is a
descriptor or fact that in no way enhances
the value or stature of the item in question.
So for all intents and purposes it may as well
be “mere puff” or if one wanted to look with
more sympathetic eyes, a simple but elegant
way to enhance the marketing of the item in
question; a harmless way to make slightly
more fuss of someone’s property.
Provenance that is meaningful on the other
hand is that list of ownerships, exhibitions,
publications and sometimes even discovery
and restorations (the latter two appear rarely
in provenance lists) that
quite literally traces the journey, rather than
just the ownership of that item. The more
extensive and importantly verifiable that
list is the more influential it is in improving
the raw value of the item in question. A
provenance question, for example, that has
become so topical at an international level in
recent decades is when an otherwise detailed
provenance cannot be explained between the
years 1933 and 1945. Public galleries with
European collections are giving this topic
intense attention, albeit quietly.
Finally there is “provenience”, used
commonly in American archaeology and
international anthropology circles to record
the three dimensional spot within which the
item was discovered; otherwise known as the
“find spot” (thank you Wikipedia!). If one
was to try and relate the term back to the art
world one might describe the “find spot” as
the studio or place within which the work of
art was created. Lucio’s restaurant in Sydney
is a charming example of a “find spot”. There
you will find all over the walls drawings and
musings from many an artist that as a thank
you, for a wonderful meal or experience, have
grabbed a table cloth, a napkin or a piece of
hastily supplied piece of paper, has whipped
up a little bit of art.
Funny, really, that perhaps one of the
soundest forms of provenance in Australia
today are those works of art still residing in
those restaurants.

Leonard Joel in conjunction with the Modern
Design department is proud to present one of the
most comprehensive Australian collections of
vintage fashion by the renowned Italian designer,
Emilio Pucci (1914-1992). Covering key periods
from the 1950s through to the 1970s, the collection
includes iconic designs from the famous 1960s silk
jersey psychedelic printed shift dresses, through
to terry velvet beach capes, swimwear, bags, silk
scarves, ties and other ephemera. Pucci was known
as ‘The Prince of Prints’ - his designs were worn by
high society figures and film stars from Elizabeth
Taylor to the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe, who
was actually buried in her favourite Pucci dress.
Pucci’s designs combined luxurious fabrics with
extravagant, vibrantly coloured prints. It was the
prints themselves that were most groundbreaking
- his colour palettes, quirky patterns and bold
designs were exceptional. Pucci’s use of silk
stretch fabrics showed an intuitive understanding
of the female form - subtle yet at the same time
seductive and exciting. This rare assemblage has
been lovingly collected over the past 20 years by
a single owner based in Melbourne. Highlights
from the collection include a 1960s silk jersey
printed pant-suit, reputed to have belonged to one
of Cary Grant’s wives; air hostess uniforms for the
American Braniff Airlines and an original letter
from Pucci to one of his clients, signed in pen.
The collection also features several outrageous
capes and incredible silk jersey dresses, even some
early labels from the ‘Emilio of Capri’ collection.
There is also a silk blouse of the same type worn
by Samantha (Kim Cattrall) in an episode of Sex
and the City, as well as unopened Vivara perfumes,
still in their original silk Pucci covered boxes. The
gentlemen won’t miss out either, with a selection
men’s printed silk ties to choose from and a
luxurious burnt orange velvet Ermenegildo Zegna
designed blazer with Pucci printed lining.
This truly is a once in a lifetime vintage collection
- items such as these will never be available at the
same time again!

The Leonard Room saleroom at Leonard Joel assumed something of the appearance of a
classical sculpture gallery on Sunday 26th October, when a single owner collection of
bronze and marble statuary and Art Deco furniture was dispersed. However, it was lot
111, a life sized contemporary bronze figure of a man – widely believed to Mark Twain
– seated on a park bench which secured one of the top prices, selling to a collector for
$29,280 (IBP) after heated bidding between room and telephone bidders.
Other highlights from the collection included the monumental bronze statue Aeneas,
Anchises and Asanius Escaping Troy, after Pierre Lapautre, which realised $34,160 (IBP)
and a widely admired patinated bronze garden fountain (lot 120), which sold for $23,180.
Continuing the theme of statuary, an Italian marble group on pedestal, Kid and Goat,
after Giovita Lombardi, was competed by two bidders to a final hammer price of $39,040.
Held in the same Victorian Western District family for over 50 years, the statue will now
be housed in the grounds of another landmark property on the outskirts of Melbourne.
Among the three remaining single owner collections in the auction, the Norm Frost
Collection of Fine Timepieces provided further highlights, most notably a fine quality
Regency mahogany cased musical bracket clock, which realised $20,740 (IBP). Also
amongst the outstanding selection of bracket clocks was a George II example of compact
proportions, signed Henry Fish, which found a new home at $17,000 (IBP).

For me now the picture is complete. After the great success of our
inaugural Sydney ‘Jewels & Objets D’Art’ auction in August I immediately
began thinking, “what next”? Right from the concept stage of the
Leonard Joel Sydney office it has been my ambition to present our loyal Sydney
clients a petit version, encompassing all departments, of the types of treasures and
collections that Leonard Joel has to offer but with a strong focus on Fine Jewellery and
Wristwatches. But equally and in conjunction with 69 John St Fine Art Specialists, that
have curated the art component of this auction, I feel I have succeeded in bringing you
the myriad of categories that Leonard Joel has to offer. While always difficult to narrow
down, my
favourite items in this auction are not necessarily the most costly ones either. Lot 39
intrigues me; an intricately designed miniature pistol charm that actually fires a silver
bullet, in the most gentle of fashion of course! In our decorative arts section I love lot
234, the bronze and ivory ‘Royal Page’ figure, simply for its whimsy and lot 330, the
Roland Shakespeare Wakelin painting of a Sydney Harbour Bridge scene, so reminiscent
of a simpler time but with the brooding post-war progress so present, is a work from
this catalogue that I keep coming back to. The auction is unashamedly eclectic but with
a strong focus on Fine Jewels, a category nationally that Leonard Joel leads the way in
and I hope that there is something special here that will satisfy your personal collection.
I look forward to meeting you at the viewing and that you are successful with
a purchase at the auction!

FINE ART PREVIEW
Leonard Joel is proud to have been entrusted with offering artworks from the collection
of the Late Beverly Brown (1949-2012). Brown grew up in a philanthropic family in
Melbourne surrounded by important Australian paintings. Throughout her life, she
herself became a generous benefactor and astute collector of fine nineteenth and
twentieth century Australian art.
Imbued with a romantic character, this fine collection of forty-two, traditional and
modern, oil and watercolour paintings, to be sold on 2 December at the Fine Art Auction,
is representative of the many important Australian artists working in Australia and
internationally. These examples reflect Victorian tastes and fashions and demonstrated
allegiances to the latest English and European tendencies of the Royal Academy and
the Salon.
Highlights from the traditional collection include John Peter Russell’s double sided
Portofino watercolour conservatively estimated at $12,000–18,000, and Ellis Rowan’s
finely painted Wattle $2,000-4,000. Other artists represented include Walter Withers,
George Lambert, Nora Heysen and Arthur Boyd among others.
This year’s December Fine Art auction features a particularly strong focus on European
art, headlined by French Expressionist Bernard Buffet’s Nature Morte à la Cafetière Verte
$35,000-55,000, and well supported by post-Impressionist en plein air scenes including
Lucien Adrion’s Regatta $15,000-20,000. Further highlights include a Collection of Polish
art from the turn of the century spearheaded by Symbolist painter Jacek Malczewski’s
Self Portrait $30,000-50,000.
