From the Head of School, Years 3-7 This week the Year 4 students and staff attended the rescheduled Year 4 camp at a new location, Port Hughes. It was wonderful hearing about the many successes our students had during their camp experience. Students were able to take on challenges and new achievements. The snorkelling proved very popular. Thank you to all the staff who attended the camp. Yesterday our Year 7 students began their transition process with a Chapel Service led by Father Andrew and guest speaker, Ben Warren, who spoke about meeting challenges and facing transitions in life. This was followed by our Year 7 students spending some time with three recent SPW Old Scholars, who shared their experiences of transitioning to Secondary School and then answered questions. As part of the morning the SPW Old Scholars’ Association provided a gift booklet to each Year 7 student called “It’s your Move –Your Guide to Moving to Secondary School”. The morning concluded with a delicious pizza lunch for the Year 7 students, donated by the Old Scholars, which was appreciated by all. What a beautiful spring morning to run our Whole School Relay, which was won by Eyre House. This was followed by the much anticipated and enjoyed Junior Primary Sports Day. The colour, enjoyment, participation and huge crowd of family supporters were terrific to see. Congratulations to Huw Bowen, Skye Baldacchino, Karen Whelan, the Year 7 student helpers, all of our wonderful JP staff, and of course the children for making these such memorable events. Simon Theel Year 3 Poem This poem was written as a collaborative effort by a Year 3 Literacy group (Ashtyn, Henry, Zara, Jake, Isla and Sophie) who were tasked with producing a colour poem about red on the theme of Remembrance day. Red are the bricks of the strong defenses Red is the blood on the barbed wire fences Red is the poppy that grows from the frost Red is the rose of the love that we lost

For House purposes, the combined scores for both events will be totalled to determine the winning House. Initial details regarding the day are: Years 3-4 Swimming Carnival: 8.30am Years 3-4 Roll Call on Braested Oval 8.45am Years 3-4 Coaches Depart (Pier Street) 9.30am Years 3-4 Program Begins (Westminster) 11.30am Years 3-4 Program Ends (Westminster) 11.45am Years 3-4 Coaches Depart (Westminster) All students will return to SPW at approximately 12.30pm and will remain at school until normal dismissal time. TERM 4 SUMMER SPORTS DRAWS Please remember to check the fixture every week online, as listed on the team sheet, as unfortunately fixtures can sometimes change at the last minute without schools being advised. REMINDER OF SPW’s HEAT POLICY All games and training, including JP Activities, are cancelled AUTOMATICALLY if the forecast is 35 degrees and over, as in The Advertiser on the day of games or competition. PLEASE NOTE Karen Whelan will be on leave until 23 November. Please direct any urgent messages via Huw Bowen—[email protected]. This includes notifying Huw if your child is unable to attend a fixture, so that coaches can be advised and make alternative arrangements. 2015 ONLINE EXTRA-CURRICULAR NOMINATIONS Information has been sent home pertaining to online 2015 extra-curricular nominations. PFA FRIENDRAISING AND END OF YEAR EVENTS End of term will be upon us before we know it. Each year the PFA donates $300 to each year level to coordinate a ‘Friendraising’ event, which must be available to all parents and families in the year level. Once you have details of your event, please contact the PFA and we will arrange for the donation. Why not get together for some brainstorming to see which awesome occasion you can think of. Please email the PFA at [email protected] PFA NEXT MEETING The next PFA meeting on Wednesday 26 November will be a planning meeting for 2015, if you have any great ideas please come along and share them or just be a part of some of the decision making for the planning towards an exceptional 2015 with the PFA. CHRISTMAS IS ONLY 6 WEEKS AWAY!!!! CHRISTMAS LUNCH HELP REQUIRED The Whole School Christmas lunch is held on the Monday 8 December and is a fabulous event. Organising for this event needs to get underway very soon. Could any Year 3 families that are willing and able to help set up or assist with the organisation on Friday 5 December, please contact Donna Letic and Nicola Cheesman as soon as possible. There are always lots of helpers on the day to support with setting the tables with food. A note will be sent home soon. CHRISTMAS RAFFLE The Christmas Raffle is a really exciting and fun event for the children. This event is being coordinated by the Reception and Preparatory parents. Kate H, Narelle D and Kylie B have offered to coordinate this and have already started buying goodies for the baskets. Details of tickets will be going out very soon. MONDAY SPORTS BBQS Thank you to the helpers last week. Helpers are again required for Monday between 2.40pm and 4.00pm. Chaplain’s Chat It was terrific to have Ben Warren, Norwood Premiership coach, speak to us in Chapel today on meeting challenges and facing transitions in life. Some points he made were: Have good people around you and ask for help if you need it Find a good mentor you can discuss things with When you are facing problems talk to others, those problems will be so much
harder if you don’t talk about them Focus on the things you can control and work positively on those We also welcomed back some recent old scholars Harry J, Brooke O and Scott T shared with us their experience of moving to Year 8. Their main tips for enjoying Secondary School? Get involved Take the chance to say hi and meet new people Be confident Take responsibility for your work and being organised Next week in Chapel we will look at Servant Leadership and, with the help of Frau Stephenson and some German students, will particularly draw on the example of St Martin. 8.45am Thursday 20 November. 2015 Captains’ Election Information “The future of society is dependent in the quality of leaders we produce”. In Issue #32’s issue of the Weekly I shared the criteria for the awarding of prizes. While we are busy discussing awards we have also revisited the criteria and process for the election of our School leaders for 2015. One of the strengths of a stand-alone ELC to Year 7 School is that our students have the opportunity to lead and mentor from a young age. SPW has a strong tradition of leadership and we want to prepare our children as the future leaders of society as they “must be the change we wish to see in the world” ( Nelson Mandela). While we do elect formal school leaders, all SPW Upper Primary students will have the opportunity to participate in a specifically designed leadership program that reinforces everyone can be a leader. All children have the potential to lead given the right set of circumstances and environment. Some will show leadership on the sporting field, others within the classroom or community. Others will go quietly about their everyday tasks and lead more subtly. They will be given a range of leadership opportunities whether it be leading a research team, being a buddy or mentor to a younger student, or facilitating a group activity. There will be opportunities for all of our students to show leadership qualities and enact them; they will be strongly encouraged to take responsibility and make decisions that matter. They will have a voice in what happens at SPW. Our leadership program will teach students how to get along, how to negotiate, resolve conflict and how to be an effective team member. The process for our formal leadership positions elections is as follows. There will be further information about this forthcoming over the next few weeks and there will be more information about our exciting leadership program for all. 2015 Captains’ Election Schedule
