3From the desk of the Assistant Principal of Curriculum &

Instruction As we approach the end of the first semester, I am pleased at all of the positive things happening at Lely. This is a very important time, academically, for all students. At this point, students should have a clear idea of where they stand in all of their classes. Now is the time to make sure they stay on track and make that extra push to raise their grades to an acceptable level. Please continue to check your child’s grades on FOCUS gradebook. If you need assistance with the Parent Portal, please visit or call the school. If your student is struggling with their classes or not living up to their potential, please contact the teacher or counselor. Lely has several opportunities for tutoring, during lunch and after school. This is a great way to get that extra help. Our Credit Recovery program is also in full swing and will continue during the second semester. Students that have failed a core course can stay after school to make up the class, on the computer. If you feel your child would benefit from this program and you would like more information, please contact your child’s counselor. Finally, midterms/finals for first semester are quickly approaching. Exams will take place, December 16-21. A schedule for the week is posted on the LHS website. Students - please study hard and do your best!

Greetings from the Attendance and Discipline Office!

This year, we welcome Ms. Lauren Woodward as our new Assistant Principal. Ms. Woodward brings years of experience as an administrator from Virginia and will work with 9th and 10th graders. Mr. Ruby, our Assistant Principal for Attendance and Discipline will handle 11th and 12 graders. The 2016-2017 school year is off to a great start and our office has exciting things to report. LHS has implemented a new tardy policy this year in which students have to be in the classroom when the bell rings. Otherwise, they report to the office to check in and receive a tardy. The tardy policy is outlined in the student planner. Tardies have drastically decreased and students are in their classrooms at the assigned time. Congratulations to our LHS students for being in compliance and putting their education first! As you are aware, attendance is a strong factor in student achievement. It is challenging for any student to achieve academic success if he/she is not present in class. Parents and Guardians, please continue to monitor your child’s attendance and grades through the FOCUS parent portal. If you have not registered for the parent portal, please contact the school for directions at 377-2000. This is a valuable tool that helps hold students’ accountable for their attendance and academic progress. Students may not exceed 9 absences per semester, or face credit denial. If you have any questions about what constitutes an excused or unexcused absence, please contact the Attendance Office at 377-2029. At LHS, it is our belief that as a team, we can support students in helping them reach their academic potential PBS, also known as Positive Behavior Supports is a CCPS initiative that is implemented across the district and also at LHS. This systematic approach supports a positive learning community using proactive strategies to build relationships, model and teach appropriate behaviors, and provide supports needed to ensure student achievement. Students have had the opportunity to earn PBS tickets from staff members recognizing their positive behavior, great attendance, and grades. This past quarter, students were able to various prizes such as gift cards, parking lot spots, and tickets to participate in the Hype Squad.

JROTC Department With 2016 coming to a close, the Lely High School JROTC Battalion is already off to a great start for the 2016-2017 school year. The program’s commitment to service, leadership and post-graduation planning remains unwavering and its leaders are looking forward to continued prosperity. During the first quarter alone, the program has accumulated approximately 2,900 volunteer hours for the community. One of the most memorable and profound events attended by the program’s cadets was Meals for Hope. The forty-nine cadets who attended this event are proud to say that they were able to help package over 54,000 meals for those in need throughout their community. The cadets were humbled by the experience and have gained a greater appreciation for the opportunities that life has granted them. Knowing that they have made a difference in the lives of those need and given back to a community that has given so much to them means the world to the cadets. For Lely JROTC cadets giving back to the community is not merely a pastime, it is commit to service and a building block for a better tomorrow. The Battalion’s S-3, Cadet Major Oscar Salcedo, also had the honor of serving the community beyond Collier County. During Late October, Cadet Major Oscar Salcedo had the opportunity to experience and understand what the men and women who fought in WWII,the Korean War , and the Vietnam War endured and sacrificed for their county on a flight to Washington D.C. According Salcedo, “each veteran’s story was unique and being able to embark on a trip with them was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Their stories were a tribute to their ardent and selfless service. I am proud to have been able to sit in the same place with those great men and women.” On the arrival back

home, the veterans of Honor Flight Mission 12 were welcomed by family and friends. Many of the veterans found this as a very warming welcome home. Some even said it was more welcoming than when they originally returned from war, which at the time was not supported by the American people and soldiers were disrespected. Salcedo was able to help ensure that their welcome was as warm as possible and has gained an even greater appreciation for the services of our veterans. Cadets plan to give back to Veterans on Veteran’s Day at Lely Palms Retirement Community by immersing themselves in conversation and celebration with veterans during a veteran’s breakfast. Lely JROTC’s cadets have had a splendid time in the past and hope to leave veterans with the same comfort that they have given them with their sacrifice. In addition to service, Lely High School JROTC’ commitment to post graduation planning has already presented splendid results. Cadet Major Heather Payne, the battalion’s S-7, has already been accepted to Wentworth Military Academy and College in Lexington, Missouri with a $150,000 scholarship. Payne plans to major in Nursing and feels honored at the prospect of serving her country as an officer after graduating from the esteemed academy. Cadet Captains Ulysses Sanchez and Rene Albert Felix Jr. have also jumped started their military careers. Cadet Captain Ulises Sanchez has been enlisted in the U.S Marines, equivalent to $81,000 scholarship as a result of the Montgomery G.I Bill. Sanchez says that being a Marine has been his dream since he was in sixth grade. Sanchez has worked tirelessly for years to achieve this goal. Cadet Captain Rene Albert Felix Jr. has been enlisted in the U.S Navy as a Cryptologic Technician, which is equivalent to a scholarship of $81, 000. Felix is honored to serve his country by doing something he loves. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Bethstyline Chery, the Battalion Commander, and Cadet Major Rocio Robles, the Battalion’s S-4, have also made great strides. Both Robles and Chery have already received the first of hopefully many college acceptance letters. They hope to continue on their path of intellectual growth and inspire the next generation of cadets to strive for excellence. The Battalion as a whole hopes to achieve continued success in all post-secondary endeavors, whether it be military service or post-secondary education. The senior class hopes to raise two million dollars in scholarships by the the end of the school year. Surpassing that goal would be ideal.

5 In regards to the Battalion’s future plans, it is preparing for its JPA inspection in hopes of matching or possibly surpassing its near perfect score of 99.75%. The Battalion is humbled by its pass successes, but believes that there is always room for improvement. With the support of Lely High School and the community, the Battalion envisions a bright future for its cadets. The Lely JROTC mission is accomplished when the student achieves success, both academically and as an individual. The JROTC program promotes self-discipline, confidence and pride, while providing a safe environment that challenges the students to reach their full potential. The words used to describe these ideals in academic terms may be different from the military terminology, but they remain highly intertwined as our goals remain the same; the success of the student in class and in life. I Hope this letter finds you wel,l Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Bethstyline Chery, Battalion Commander Lely High School JROTC. If you have any question or concerns regarding 10-12 graders please call me at (239-377-4253) or email me at [email protected]. , MSG Santiago would appreciate a telephone call at (239-377-2051) or email at [email protected] for all 9 graders. LHS Art Club and Latin Students at the Ringling in Sarasota

“How beautiful!” “This is so peaceful.” “If I lived near here, I would come to write as often as possible.” “This site has so much to see!” “What a feeling of beauty and calm…”: these were just some of the comments shared by the students who participated in the biennial trip to Sarasota organized by Lely High School Art Club, with invitation extended this year to the Latin 1 and 2 classes. Mr. Kevin Smith as Art Club Sponsor, Mrs. Ana Wieser and Mrs. Bowe as chaperons, had the pleasure to accompany an outstanding group of young men and women to the Ringling Art Museum, Ca’ de Zan, and the Circus Museum on Saturday, October 22, 2016. Why outstanding? Well, beside their collaborative behaviors, their polite and considerate manners, these youths demonstrated deep appreciation of the works of art displayed: Peter Paul Rubens as well as the Italian Renaissance; original and copies of Roman statues as well as bronze copies of Greek mythological figures; Asian, European, and American art. The architectural features of both the Ringling Museum of Art and of Ca’ De Zan, along with the spectacular banyan trees, did not go unnoticed to the eyes of our artistic and/or amateurish photographers. The weather could not be more favorable, the light not more proper, the air not more enhancing of the views and feels of this generous site. The students were impressed also with John and Mable Ringling’s choice to donate at their death all of their art collections and dwellings to the State of Florida, so that all of us –even if not biological descendants, certainly connected in kinship of spirit with this amazing couple- could now enjoy the wonders of the place. On the bus back to LHS Saturday night everyone was quiet, tired for sure, but maybe also a little overwhelmed with what had transfixed vision and souls. To say it with the founder of the Aesthetic Movement – the English poet John Keats-, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” What an opportunity to live it together! Please, come and support the Art Club at Lely High School. You can contribute ideas for trip destinations, volunteer your time as a chaperon, and/or propose yourself as a guest speaker. You can contact Mr. Kevin Smith at: [email protected] or Mrs. Anna Bowe at: [email protected].

ESE Department On December 9, 2016 Lely High School will be hosting its’4th Annual “UNIQUE” Science Fair! Approximately 125 students with various disabilities from six high schools in Collier County will participate and present their “UNIQUE” science projects. The Science Fair Coordinators, Jacqueline Williams and Nicole Cholka, believe the fair provides a wonderful opportunity for students with special needs to connect and interact with their peers, teachers and the community. It also gives the community an up close and personal look into what our special students are capable of when presented the tools and opportunity. The Science Fair will be held in the Lely High School gymnasium and the projects will be on display from 9:00 to 11:30 p.m. Please feel free to bring your classes so that they “quiz” our young scientist about their projects!
