Please put on your best Hawaiian party attire and join us for a luau on Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., for great fun, food, festive music and, yes, hula dancing. Hope to see you there. 5 Things About:Butterflies

• Butterflies can be foundfluttering around everycontinent except Antarctica.

• The insects feed on nectarand pollen from flowers.

• They taste with their feet—that’s where their tastereceptors are located.

• A butterfly’s two eyes have6,000 lenses each.

• Their wings are actuallytransparent & covered withthousands of tiny scales.Light reflecting off the scalescreates the colors & patternswe see that are so beautiful tothe eye.

The Power of FlowersYou’ve probably heard the old

saying “Stop and smell the roses.”Researchers confirm that takenliterally, it’s good advice. Thescent of fresh flowers or floralscents in general can boost yourmood, lower stress and evenencourage friendliness. If youdon’t favor these fragrances, simply taking in the color offlowers can kindle positiveemotions. Pastel-colored varietiestend to make people feel morerelaxed, while bold colors areenergizing.

Physical Activity forOlder Adults

Many people decrease theirexercise as they age but continuingto exercise has definite benefits forolder people. Being fit isimportant to everyone. Flexibilityand stretching, which helpsprovide a full range of motion formuscles and joints, can help youfunction better. Everyday tasksthat are difficult, such as gettingup, walking, tying shoelaces orreaching to a shelf may becomeeasier. When you stay flexible, youalso keep a more natural walkingpattern and decrease your chancesof falling. Most flexibility that isseemingly lost through aging iscaused not only by aging but alsoby inactivity or lack of movement.Aerobic exercise strengthens theheart and reduces the risk ofcoronary artery disease. It can alsoincrease the amount of sleep youget at night and may reduce thetime it takes to fall asleep.

Strengthening exercises canhelp you maintain your muscles, strengthen bones, and protectknees and other joints. Theseexercises may include, resistancetraining, such as lifting wights, and weight bearing such aswalking, jogging or dancing.

Your physical activity does nothave to be strenuous. Older adultscan gain significant healthbenefits with a moderate amountof physical activity. This can bedone in longer sessions ofmoderately intense activities suchas walking or in shorter sessionsof more vigorous activities such asfast walking or stair walking. Youcan benefit from physical activityeven if you think of yourself aselderly or you already have oldage conditions such asosteoarthritis or heart disease.Being more active may improveyour quality of life and canprevent or delay disability.

It is advisable to talk to yourdoctor before starting a fitnessprogram. You may have healthproblems that limit what youcan do.

At Belmont Village we have aPhysical Fitness Program availablefor all residents with consentsfrom their doctor. The program islead by an instructor for 45minute sessions Monday throughFriday in the activity room. Youmay also utilize one of theexercise videos provided by us onyour own time or on Saturdaymornings in the activity room onour large flat screen television. Some videos available to youinclude Tai Chi and Sit & Stretch. We also have exercise equipmentavailable at the Center for LifeEnhancement for use whensupervised by a personal trainer.
