Remembering the Fallenon Memorial Day

In 1868, three years after theCivil War ended, Maj. Gen. JohnA. Logan, leader of a Unionveterans’ organization, establishedDecoration Day as a time for thenation to decorate the graves ofsoldiers who had died in the war.He chose May 30, possiblybecause he knew flowers would bein bloom all over the country.

Logan’s declaration, in part, said: “We should guard theirgraves with sacred vigilance ... Letpleasant paths invite the comingand going of reverent visitors andfond mourners. Let no neglect, noravages of time, testify to thepresent or to the cominggenerations that we have forgottenas a people the cost of a free and

undivided republic.”Arlington National Cemetery

was the site of the first officialobservance, attended byWashington dignitaries as well asthe public. After the speeches, children from the Soldiers’ andSailors’ Orphan Home and Unionveterans walked through thecemetery, placing flowers on bothUnion and Confederate graves.

After World War I, May 30became a day to honor fallensoldiers from all wars. In 1971,Congress declared Memorial Daya national holiday that would becelebrated on the last Mondayin May.

Since 2000, Americans havebeen encouraged to observe aNational Moment ofRemembrance by pausing at 3p.m. local time on Memorial Dayfor a minute of silence to honorthose who have died servingthe nation.

Music Therapy Strikesa Chord

From the silly songs we learn aschildren to the popular tunes wehum along to as adults, we enjoymusic throughout our lives. Butmusic can be much more than justentertainment. Music therapy hasbeen effective in helping

individuals of all ages cope withconditions such as learning anddevelopmental disabilities, chronic pain and even dementia.

Scientists aren’t sure why musicseems to improve the mood andalertness of Alzheimer’s sufferers, but a study published in February2009 discovered an intriguinglink. Researchers found an area ofthe brain that seems to bestimulated when music, memoriesand emotion are involved; thatsame area of the brain had beennoted in previous research as oneof the last to be affected byAlzheimer’s disease.

Individuals don’t need to bemusically inclined to benefit froma music therapy session, nor isone type of music better thananother. Check out the manyopportunities for music therapy onour calendar so you can join yourloved one for some fun and mentalstimulation!

Gardening Is Goodfor You

Growing older doesn’t meanyour gardening days are goneforever. In fact, research showsthat gardening provides a bountyof benefits for seniors. Even better, the rewards are the same whetheryou use containers or a plotof land.

Peaceful planting. Gardening canbe both relaxing and therapeutic.Tending a garden involves varioustasks that keep the mind sharp, and the fresh air improves focusand concentration. Beingoutdoors also reduces stress, irritability and depression, whichin turn leads to more restful sleep.

Seeds of strength. Digging in thedirt, lifting a watering can andpulling weeds all help buildmotor skills, strengthen musclesand improve joint flexibility.Additionally, a University ofArkansas study found theweight-bearing movementsassociated with gardeningincreased bone density andreduced the risk of osteoporosis.

A happy harvest. By nurturingand caring for another livingthing, gardening provides a senseof purpose and accomplishment. There’s nothing like seeing thefruits of your labor in the form ofbeautiful blossoms or fresh, tastyfruits and vegetables.
