I experienced such a time on Sunday afternoon as I travelled to Swan Hill for a meeting of the principals of the Catholic Secondary schools from the Diocese of Ballarat. Along the journey, I stopped at a café in Avoca to grab a quick bite to eat. Prior to entering the café, I intended ordering a quick take away coffee and some food. Upon entering, I was warmly welcomed to the café and shown the menu. I quickly ordered a jaffle and a coffee and the host asked if it was ‘take away’ or ‘eat in. She quickly added that the fire was burning and food always tastes better if you sit and enjoy it! So, I took a seat and over the next twenty minutes took some time to reflect on the past week and to review the upcoming week, both personally and professionally. I thoroughly enjoyed the coffee and jaffle and thanked my hosts for their hospitality and their time, upon which one of the hosts replied: ‘We consider this place a pause in time and are glad that you have taken some time to refresh for your continued journey’. I left that café reminded that we only need a few minutes to step away from our own busyness to enable us the time and space to renew, recharge and then to continue in our busyness. The Gospel shares that Jesus and his disciples would take time in prayer, contemplation and reflection: we should also do the same.

Learn to Rest

So Your Life Will Be Blest We all need ‘short vacations’

in life’s fast and maddening race –

An interlude of quietness

from the constant, jet-age pace….

So, when your day is pressure-packed

and your hours are all too few,

Just close your eyes and meditate

and let GOD talk to you,

For, when we keep on pushing,

we’re not following in GOD’S WAY –

We are foolish, selfish robots

mechanized to fill each day

With unimportant trivia

that makes life more complex

And gives us greater problems

to irritate and vex …..

So, when your nervous network

becomes a tangled mess

Just close your eyes in silent prayer

and ask THE LORD to bless

Each thought that you are thinking

each decision you must make,

As well as every word you speak

and every step you take,

For only by the grace of GOD

can we gain self-control

Any only meditative thoughts

can restore your ‘PEACE OF SOUL’

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Friends of Trinity Over the past few weeks and indeed over the course of the time while at Trinity College, I have attended numerous meetings and conferences which have required me to be out of the College. Such time spent off campus is a clear part of the role of a school principal and one which has grown in the past decade or so. As levels of compliance and regulation have grown in society and, by extension in schools, each year schools are required to continue to improve in these various aspects of compliance. In addition, Trinity College is part of the Catholic education system which allows us to share other parts of togetherness with other Catholic schools. I am sure that each person reading this newsletter can reflect on their own busyness and the times, both personally and professionally, when a week can pass us by with little time spent in reflection and taking the time to nurture our own spirit.

We wish our Year 11 students and staff who are on the Snow Trip well as they enjoy the abundance of snow this year. A reminder that our Year 8-9 subject selections are due this Thursday and that our current Year 9 students will undertake the Melbourne experience next week. The next School Community Feedback Session will be held on Wednesday, 13th September, and all parents/guardians are encouraged to attend. This session will seek feedback about our Parent-Teacher-Student interview process, provide an update on the College Master Plan and seek input regarding our communication with parents/guardians. In the coming week, I encourage all to reflect on the wisdom of my host at the café in Avoca and take a pause in time to refresh for our continued journey, not so much a trip on the road but our journey in life. Virtus nobilitat. Mr Tim O’Farrell Principal

ADMINISTRATION MATTERS

IMMUNISATIONS: Tuesday, 5th September YEAR 7 IMMUNISATIONS The final session for Year 7 students receiving the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine, together with any catch-up of the Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough) or Varicella (chicken pox) vaccines that students may have missed earlier in the year, will be happening on Tuesday, 5th September during periods 3 & 4. MENINGOCOCCAL CATCH-UP Colac Otway Shire is providing a free service in line with the Victorian School Vaccine Program to all secondary school students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to protect them from Meningococcal. Adolescents are at an increased risk of contacting the meningococcal disease and, although it is uncommon, it can become life-threatening very quickly. There are different strains of meningococcal bacteria known by the letters of the alphabet, including A, B, C, W and Y. In recent years, the meningococcal W strain has increased across Australia. The vaccine provided by Colac Otway Shire provides protection against Meningococcal ACWY and was administered at school, in a single dose, on Monday, 24th July 2017. If you child missed out on this opportunity, an Immunisation Consent Card can be collected from Student Reception and returned prior to Tuesday, 5th September, when a catch-up session will be conducted during periods 3 & 4. For more information about the meningococcal disease, the meningococcal ACWY vaccine and how you can prepare your child for vaccination, please visit www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au or www.immunehero.health.vic.gov.au. If you have any enquiries regarding this program, please contact Mrs Barbara Paine of Colac Otway Shire on (03) 5232 9429.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN VOUCHERS Trinity College is collecting the Earn and Learn vouchers that are being promoted at Woolworths. Every donation will be gratefully accepted and the vouchers rewarded will be used by the school to purchase a range of equipment that enables students to enjoy their time at school. Please ensure that you fill the sticker sheets and return them to the College Reception. Alternatively, the stickers can just be dropped off at Reception and the stickers will be pasted onto the sheets. To support the smaller schools in our community, Trinity College does not have a box placed at the Woolworths store So, get ‘earning’ and send the stickers into Reception so we can ensure our students have the best opportunity to learn. Thank you in advance for your support of a great initiative from Woolworths. Mr Brad Smith Director of Students

CURRICULUM NEWS

SUBJECT SELECTION TIMELINE FOR 2018

• On Thursday, 17th August, Year 7 and 8 students received their Curriculum Handbook. They also attended an Information Session on this day where students were guided through various aspects of selecting their preferences. The process of completing their subject selections on-line was explained to students at this session.

• After the information session, students received an email to their school email address from a web preference address with their log-on names and passwords. They are to follow the instructions in the email. Students should check their inbox or their ‘clutter’ for the email. Students who experience any problems with the online process must contact Miss Carter at [email protected].

• By midnight on Thursday, 31st August, Year 7 and 8 students need to have completed their 2018 subject selections on-line. Students must print a final copy of their selections from the computer programme option, ensure that the sheet is signed by a parent/guardian and must return the printed sheet to their homeroom teacher.

• Any Year 7 or 8 student who is unsure of their subject selections should chat to their homeroom teacher, their subject teacher or to their YLC. Alternatively, they can contact Ms Ryan or Mrs Pefanis from 18th August to 25th August for further clarification.

FINALIST IN VICTORIA UNIVERSITY BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION Selena Nguyen, with her business plan titled The Translator Watch, was a finalist in the 2017 Victoria University I Plan a Business Competition. Selena’s business idea was to make a watch that could help people translate different languages. For this achievement

Selena won a $100 gift card. This is a fantastic effort given that this a Victorian wide competition with many entries from schools across the state. Nearly 300 business students from 34 secondary schools across Victoria entered the competition. The competition requires business students to put their classroom theory into practice by producing a business plan that could become the next big idea. Congratulations also to all the other Unit 1 Business Management students who participated in the competition. Mr Luke Featherston Business Management teacher

SPORTS NEWS

REGIONAL SCHOOL CLAY TARGET CHAMPIONSHIPS On Thursday, 24th August, students from Years 7 to 12 travelled to Noorat to compete in the Regional School Clay Target Championships. All students shot two rounds of 10 targets each, with one practice target in their first round. With the weather being a little windy, the students shot well under the conditions, with Clay Jenkins getting a perfect 10 for his first round. Congratulations to all students on their performance on the day and also thanks to Rob Halliday for his support and the coaching he provides for our students. At the recent Geoff Holt Memorial Shoot, the Holt family donated their profits towards junior shooting in Colac. Between Colac Secondary College and Trinity College, the Holt family has kindly donated funds to purchase 8 pairs of Beretta ear muffs for the use of our students. We thank them for their generous donation. Miss O’Loughlin HPE teacher

VICTORIAN SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS On 8th August, five Trinity netball teams travelled to the State Netball Hockey Centre in Parkville to participate in the prestigious Victorian Schools Championships. To progress through to the State Final, each team was required to finish on top of the ladder in their pool. All teams played in 8 or 9 fourteen-minute games and all of the opposing teams were of a high quality. The Junior A side played 9 games throughout the tournament and won 6 of those games. Amongst their wins, the girls produced dominating performances against Wesley College, winning 16-0 and against OLSH College winning 10-0. In each of their 3 losses, the Trinity girls were very much in the game and only lost by 2 goals each time. After playing quality netball throughout the day, the Junior A side finished 4th on the ladder. Special mentions go to Zara Walters and Ava Cuolahan. All of the girls in this side contributed to the team’s success on the day so they should all be proud of their efforts. The Junior B team played in 8 games throughout the day against strong opposition. They had an excellent hard-fought win against Kilbreda and then produced another good performance to only go down to Williamstown by 2 goals. Molly McCrae, Savannah Jenkins and Paris Howard were great in defence all day and Jordyn Murnane did well in centre. The team finished the day with just the one win but this did not reflect the netball that they produced. Our Intermediate A side played 9 games for the day and won 6 of those 9 games. They had strong wins against Assumption College, Wesley College and The Geelong College; however, Kilbreda College, Caulfield and Luthur College proved too strong. Eliza Cahill played well in centre throughout the day and Lilly Eldridge worked well with Darcy Maloney in defence. As a team, all of the girls produced some excellent netball which resulted in them finishing in 4th position in their pool. The Intermediate B side had an enjoyable day with all players getting good court time and the team being competitive in most games. They played in 8 games for the day and managed a win against Korowa and a draw against OLSH. Unfortunately, the opposition they were faced with throughout the rest of the day were simply too strong on the day. All players produced some good netball and the girls’ attitudes and sportsmanship should be commended. Our Senior netball side played 8 games of netball on this day and managed 2 wins in the prestigious senior division that consists of some elite netballers. With only 8 players, the girls did an exceptional job performing at the level they did for the duration of the day. Special mentions go to Jessie Lang and Mon Hammond for their performances on the day. All of the girls that participated in the day represented Trinity College well and should be congratulated for their efforts in a very tough competition. Mrs Rachael Randall Teacher

SCHOOL COMMUNITY FEEDBACK SESSION (SCFS) Our School Community Feedback Session (SCFS) will be held on Wednesday, 13th September at 7.30pm in the Boardroom, Gleeson Administration Building. Topics for discussion will be the Parent/Teacher/Student interview process, provide an update of the College Master Plan and seek input regarding our communication with parents/guardians

FAITH & MISSION

REFUGEE WEEK 2017 Refugee Week 2017 was officially celebrated at Trinity College on the 23rd August in the Trade Centre on Pound Street, Trinity College Colac. A group of talented hospitality students celebrated in style by creating a Sudanese meal with the support of the Gordon chef, Neal Cunningham, and Sudanese helpers, Mary and Nyibol. The delicious menu was established by using a variety of foods and spices which gave the meal a unique, authentic Sudanese taste. The fifty guests, twenty who were children, voted for their favourite dish. The most popular was the Chilli Lamb with Sudanese bread. Father Michael welcomed the guests, sharing a special prayer and blessing of thanks, petitioning that all fellow human beings may be empowered to reflect and speak out for the injustice our world can face. The theme of Refugee Week 2017 is “With courage let us all combine”. Throughout the celebration, the theme was prevalent as we celebrated diversity within our community. In the words of our National Anthem, we recognise the courage of all who speak out against persecution and injustice. It serves as a call for unity and positive action, encouraging Australians and students at Trinity College to welcome refugees and to acknowledge the skills and energy refugees bring to our country and to our school. We are richer people at Trinity College for the experiences we share. In doing this we celebrate, we praise and give thanks for the diversity which opens our eyes to indifference in our world. Mrs Caroline Grist Learning Enrichment Coordinator

THE GREAT KEY CHALLENGE OF 2017

THE GREAT KEY CHALLENGE OF 2017 During the 2017-year Trinity College, here in Colac, is building a state of the art “Performing Arts Complex” to cater for its wonderful music and drama programs. The complex will be self-funded by the College. The over 730 students that attend the college from all around the Colac Otway Shire will be able to share in the 300 plus seat theatre, music rooms, drama rooms and private tutorial rooms.

As a part of that development, Therese and I have decided to raise money to donate a brand new grand piano to the school. Our children have come and gone from the school and Chris is a former Board Member of the College. We are grateful for the education they received. As a part of paying our gratitude forward, we want the children of the school to have day-to-day access to a wonderful instrument that will enhance their enjoyment of music and life.

This is not something the school could ever do on its own. But with your help this can be done. As a beginning, we have had a $10,000 donation from a local donor who wishes to remain anonymous. To raise the rest of the money, we are selling off the 88 keys on the piano for $250 each. We are hoping you will consider buying one or more of these keys to help achieve our goal of raising $30,000 to fund the purchase of the piano, trolley, stool and cover.

In return for yours, your family, company’s, clubs or organisations $250, your name will be placed on a piano style plaque in the performing arts complex. Trinity has committed to honour this plaque’s prominence for a minimum of 10 years.

We already have several families who are committed to purchasing keys. I imagine these will sell quickly so to avoid missing out I encourage you to get on board quickly by contacting us (0408344468 or [email protected])

Or simply fill in the form attached with your details and post the form and your cheque (made payable to Trinity College Colac) to Chris and Therese Quinn, 15 Skene Street Colac or you can drop them into Trinity College, 119 Hart Street Colac. Payment can also be made using cash or EFTPOS at Trinity College Reception. Chris and Therese Quinn
