News articles are due by November 21 to appear in December’s New-Sense.
“For all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Allelu-ia…” (For All the Saints, ELW #422)
Through the years, the saints have come and gone through this place we call our spiritual home. Some have died suddenly; others have lingered. Some have suffered greatly, while others experienced virtually no pain at all. Nonetheless, as pastor, I have witnessed these things and one this is sure: through Jesus, each one was/is “forever blessed.”
When we gather for a service of re-membrance for one who has died, we – on purpose – do not list in the bul-letin that it is a “burial of the dead,” or even simply “a funeral.” We refer to the gathering as a “Celebration of Life and Resurrection,’ for that is what it truly is.
Yes, there are tears; and, most cer-tainly, there is grief. But in the strug-gle of life we tend to discover along the way, an unexplainable joy. It is one of the great mysteries of life. For the saying is sure:
“Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Ps. 30:5)
Often there is a sense of relief, espe-cially if a loved one’s pain and strug-gle lasted a while. We often say “what a blessing” it is when someone dies short of a lengthy illness, or, even after such a long ailment. Of-
ten—too-when this is expressed, there is the feeling of guilt. One shouldn’t feel guilty. Afterall, as the main caregiver, you have struggled right alongside the now deceased person. You lived his/her pain and anguish; you also were a deep part of their spiritual and uplifting moments when they did feel better, however momentary it might have been.
The course of such experiences car-ries us through the highs and lows of the journey. We, too, experience a very deep physical, mental, and spir-itual fatigue. This may be why it is so hard for some people to come back to church for a while after the passing away of a loved one. (Be patient, all; they will return someday.)
The blessing of God to all who be-lieve is the simple phrase written by William W. How: “forever blessed.” We may not at first realize this bless-ing, but then, through faith, (in time) we will come to appreciate it more and more. When a loved one dies, she/he is in the arms of a loving God, a place we preach, teach, and talk about almost everyday of our faith days. In fact, when our day comes to die, we will understand it perfectly! As Mr. How’s hymn ends:
“The golden evening brightens in the west, soon, soon to faithful servants cometh rest, sweet is the calm of par-
adise the blest. Alleluia!”
God loves you, and so do I!
Pastor Jim

Offerings for the month of September were $9,583 less than were budgeted. Compared to last Sep-
tember, offerings were down $7,650, or 20 percent. (Each month had five Sundays.)
The recent trend in offerings is a cause for concern. During the first five months of the year, offerings
ran slightly ahead of last year...by about a percentage point. For the most recent four months,
though, offerings have been running lower than last year. By about 12 percent.

Expenditures and other items for September were higher than the budget by $16,493. The compensation package for the Associate Pastor position created a favorable variances of $7,884.
But this was offset by the need to replace multiple heating/air conditioning units, which caused an unfavora-ble variance to budget of $13,617. Parish Nurse Expense was unfavorable by $2,368, due to Ballad Health revising their billing procedures and “catching up.” And $5,000 in Local Benevolence funding enabled OSLC to participate in Operation Inasmuch, in which the congregation put together 20,000 food bags for Second Harvest Food Bank.
The lower-than-expected offerings and higher-than-expected expenses combined to produce an Excess of Expense over Revenues for September of $20,753. The budget had anticipated September revenues exceed-ing expenses by $5,323.

Council
Ken Loveday opened the meeting with devotions. We read aloud our Purpose Statement and went over upcoming dates and shared compliments (that are written elsewhere in this Newsletter).
Financial – We are behind on our budget. The of-ferings to date are down compared to last year (see Gene Maddox’s report in this newsletter for very important details of this shortfall).
It was moved and seconded to move $24,561 from our Mission Invest Fund into MIF on de-mand check writing account.
Council reviewed the proposed 2020 budget. Any final adjustments must be made at the Council meeting so it can be presented to the congregation for their study, and the vote in December.
The position for OSLC Staff, “The Faith For-mation” staff person, was approved. This job de-scription will be sent out to the congregation for their information and viewing in November. We hope to hire someone to start on January 1, 2020.
Nominating Committee is meeting soon to fill Council positions of Worship and Music, Chris-tian Education, Shepherding (Inreach), Youth Ministry, Youth Rep (1 yr. term), President, Vice President, and Financial Secretary. Serving on this committee this year: Tedd Stephens, David McAllister, Pam Booker, Gary Booker, and Mar-cy Aaroen.
Time, Talent, and Treasures forms have been mailed. People have until November 10 to return them. Temple Talks will be offered for a few Sundays until November 10. Please return your forms asap.
A Ministry Fair will be organized for Sunday af-ternoon, November 10, in the late afternoon. Eve-ryone can come and walk through the booths for each ministry as they decide which area of minis-try they would like to serve for 2020.
Friendship Sunday – November 17 – invite a friend to worship for either the 9 a.m. traditional service or for the 11:15 Heartsong worship. Stay for Sunday School too!
Plans were shared by Pastor Jim about having quarterly meetings by all the congregational com-mittees to help improve better communication and organization. Details forthcoming.
“Streaming Worship Services” – needs to be or-ganized soon. Someone has offered to pay the costs for set up. What a gracious offer!
Adjourned the meeting at 8:35 p.m. after praying together the Lord’s Prayer.
(thanks to Cat Hopper for taking minutes at this meeting)
Next meeting – November 11, 2019 – 6:30 pm.
“Friendship Sunday”
On Sunday, November 17, at both services, we are inviting YOU to invite a friend, co-worker, or relative to come and worship with you this Sunday!
Can we share the Gospel in this way?
Can we help someone find a new church home?
Can we break “over 200” this Sunday!?!?
We can do this! Don’t be shy? Bring a friend! Invite a neighbor! Come on down with all your family!
Friendship Sunday – try it, you might like it!

Become a SUPER HERO! Donate Blood at OSLC on November 17. The Marsh Mobile bus will be here from 8am-1pm for volunteer donations. Our goal is to collect 20 units. If we all work together, we can top that goal! Blood supplies of all types are always low in winter months and no one ever knows when it will be one of us or a loved one that needs blood.
There is no substitute for human blood. Patients requiring a blood transfusion rely solely on the kindness of volunteer donors to provide them with this lifesaving treatment. One out of ten patients entering a hospital will require a blood transfu-sion.
Become someone’s SUPER HERO. ‘It only takes so little to help so much’. Call Susan or Mike with questions 794-8167.

“Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus
Christ, His Son,” by Don Moen.
I love this song! I don’t know about you but sometimes I fall short in doing just that,
(giving thanks for the real and only reason
that should matter- Jesus!)
In relation to health, gratitude has been proven to better one’s health. According to research from Harvard School of Medicine,
Harvard Health Publishing wrote about this in an article. “Expressing thanks may be one
of the simplest ways to feel better.” (Updated:
June 5, 2019 Published: November, 2011.)
Taken from within this article is some advice that I want to leave with you. I am grateful
for each and every one of you! Happy Holi-
days to ALL!
~Go God, Melissa Malenda, BSN, parish
nurse
“Ways to cultivate gratitude”- Harvard School of Medicine
Write a thank-you note. You can make yourself happier and nurture your relationship with an-other person by writing a thank-you letter ex-pressing your enjoyment and appreciation of that person's impact on your life.
Thank someone mentally. No time to
Keep a gratitude journal. Make it a habit to write down or share with a loved one thoughts about the gifts you've received each day.
Count your blessings. Pick a time every week to sit down and write about your blessings reflecting on what went right or what you are grateful for. Some-times it helps to pick a number — such as three to five things — that you will identify each week. As you
write, be specific and think about the sensations you felt when something good happened to you.
Pray. People who are religious can use prayer to cul-tivate gratitude.
Meditate. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. Although people often focus on a word or phrase (such as "peace"), it is also possible to focus on what you're grateful for (the warmth of the sun, a pleasant sound, etc.)”

On November 19 at 6:30 pm, we will serve a Thanksgiving meal
to the underprivileged families of Johnson City that have chil-
dren in the public school system. There will be approximately 50
-70 people in attendance. The Johnson City School System will
provide transportation to and from the church. They will also
supply the food (ham, potatoes, mac ’n cheese, stuffing, corn
and green beans).
OSLC needs to provide the space and table settings as well and help prepare (heat up) and
serve the food since the drivers will be picking up and delivering the families. Volunteers are
needed to help prepare food, set up and take down the Fellowship Hall, serve the food and
keep drinks and napkins, eating utensils and ice available for our quests.
A sign up sheet is available on bulletin boards in both hallways.
On Monday, November 25 at 6:00 pm, OSLC is planning a Thanksgiving meal for our mem-
bers, friends, and family. This will be a pot luck dinner so please bring a main dish and either
a vegetable, salad, or dessert to share with your church family.

Outreach Ministry
Halloween – thank you so much for all the donated candy, decorated trunks, and help
with set-up and clean for the Annual Trunk or Treat. Thanks for the many hands that helped make Kool-Aid and passing out candy at Trick or Treat on Walnut Street. These
are always fun events that really get a wide range of people involved. We reach thousands of people through these activities.
Loaves & Fishes
We will be partnering with our brothers and sisters in Christ from Cross Roads Christian Church on November 9 to serve a meal to the homeless at West Main Street Christian
Church. We need people to sign up to cook six industrial size cans of Greens, and people to make eight 9x13 pans of Mac & Cheese. We also need people to sign up
to help serve and clean up. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Thanks so much for your help with this project.
Christmas Tree Lighting
On Friday, December 6, at 6:00 p.m. the official lighting of the Johnson City Christmas
tree will take place at King Commons. This year the famous Clydesdale horses will be on
display, so we are expecting an even bigger crowd. We need people to sign up to make
home baked cookies, volunteers to help package the cookies at the church and make hot
chocolate. This is such a wonderful event and we have had great positive response from
the City of Johnson City and the community on our efforts. A sign-up sheet is located on
the bulletin board.
