LEAP NEWS
HSOF AUTUMN TRAIL EVENT
Thank you to the LEAP families who joined us for the Hackney
School of Food’s Autumn Trail. We all celebrated Autumn in
style with magical story characters, sparkling wands, cups of
warm soup and other delicious food and of course lots of
pumpkins. Tickets for the community event sold out completely
…. and we received very nice feedback from those who
attended. The event managed to raise lots of money for the
School of Food which will go towards ensuring that LEAP
children continue to have access to this incredible resource at
no cost to our families. A HUGE thank you to LEAP staff who
gave up an evening to carve the pumpkins, which made the
event so special. With votes counted we can announce that the
winners of the LEAP staff pumpkin carving competition are:
Rod Ally Joanna & Kaltum
(joint winners)
SPANISH PHRASE of the week Necesito una bufanda y guantes…. I need a scarf and gloves….

LEAP WELCOME LITTLE AMAL Three teams of excited pupils came
together on the first day of half term to
welcome Little Amal to London. Little
Amal is a giant puppet, who has
walked from the Syrian/Turkish
border to raise awareness of the plight
of child refugees. She arrived at St
Paul’s Cathedral tired and nervous.
The children started to chant her name
and encourage her to come forward,
welcoming her to our ciy. She then
danced with them as they sang
Consider Yourself from the
musical Oliver. The children’s
performance did not go unnoticed
and they have been featured in
various news articles including
The Independent and Evening
Standard, as the group of children
who began the chant “Amal! Amal!
Amal!” You can watch their
performance here: Or you can
read more here:
Religious
leaders from all
the main faiths
were ready with
individual messages of Welcome
for Amal. Our LEAP children’s
kindness and compassion has
made us all very proud of them -
they sang their hearts out and the
whole event was incredibly
moving.
UFO E8 ART PROJECT As many of you know already, our three schools have all
participated in an exciting Hackney wide art project ,
funded by the Arts Council and led by public artist Tom
Pearman. A wonderful display of artworks created by
participating schools is now up at the Rio Cinema in
Dalston—and open for the public to see. You can also
look at artworks created on the project website https://
ufo.tompearman.co.uk …...and keep your eyes peeled
for a landing soon to take place at Gayhurst!
SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS Our new School Council have
already started feeding back
in their new roles – as the pupil
voice representatives for their
classes. Some of the early
suggestions that have come
from their classes have been
for children to be able to try
more International dishes at
lunch, such as Sushi and
Chinese/Asian recipes….
these suggestions will be
passed on to the Kingsmead
Kitchen team to see if this can be incorporated into next
terms menus.
Next week the School Council are receiving Road Safety
Training, so they can share information about how to stay
safe when out and about, especially as it gets darker in
the coming winter months, with the children in their
classes….watch this space for more on this topic soon as
Road Safety Week is coming up on Week Commencing
15th November.
This term the School Council have decided they
would also like to focus on becoming EcoWarriors –
promoting actions and choices that help look after the
planet. You can recognise who our school councillors are
as they all now have their new School Council jumpers.
SINGING ASSEMBLIES Every week on Friday morning years 3, 4, 5 & 6 take part
in a Singing Assembly together, led by Ben, our Nursery
Teacher and Music Lead. So far this term children have
learnt Mamma Mia by Abba, So Strong by Labi Siffre
and Livin on a Prayer by Bon Jovi.
They are now learning Mr Blue Sky
by ELO. On Friday afternoons, chil-
dren in Nursery, Reception, Year 1
and Year 2 have their Singing
Assembly, again led by Ben. Songs
they have learnt so far include Hey
You!, and Hands, Feet, Heart, a
call and response song called
Boom Chicka Boom , an English
folksong In a Wood There was a
Tree and they have just started
learning a Senegalese children’s
song Fatou Yo. Ben uses these
assemblies as an opportunity to develop children’s
musical knowledge & vocabulary, introducing them to a
range of writers, musicians and singers from diverse
genres (Classical, Jazz, Folk) from past & present and
from all over the world.
