Leap into a successful futureThe Business Fair 2014

2 3

Our Business Fair incorporates business, finance and management and is a highly successful event, appealing to students who are considering a future in one of these professions. This year, we have invited Third Sector organisations to participate, demonstrating that charities too require a variety of professionals to plan and manage their business.

Career Destinations is committed to offering the best possible opportunities to our students and to that end, we have more exhibiting organisations attending than ever before. The Fair is an excellent opportunity for you to market yourself to your chosen industry, explore what roles and opportunities are available, and to build useful contacts for future reference.

You will also be able to seek advice from Career Destinations, your university careers service, and get tips on writing your CV at our graduate recruiter led CV Clinics – all available on the day.

Career Destinations’ staff look forward to meeting you at the Fair. Please visit stand 11.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following companies for sponsoring our Business Fair:

VisaInformation

International Students – Working During Your Studies

International Students on degree-level courses are normally permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term-time, and full-time in vacations.

Students and Tier 4 (General) Migrants on degree level courses may NOT:

− Work for more than 20 hours per week in term-time

− Engage in business, self-employment or provide services as a professional entertainer or sportsperson

− Pursue a career by filling a full-time, permanent vacancy

Students on Masters courses are expected to be writing their dissertation over the summer vacation and are not deemed to be ‘on vacation’ until their course finishes. They should therefore restrict their hours of work to 20 hours per week until it has. Once their programme has finished, Masters students are treated as being ‘on vacation’ for work purposes for up to 4 months until either they leave the UK (on or before the date their Tier 4 visa expires), or they apply to change their immigration status to another category of the Immigration Rules.

PhD students are entitled to a total of 8 weeks’ vacation in any one academic year, to be taken by agreement with their supervisor. PhD students who intend to work full-time in vacations should ensure that this has also been approved by the Tier 4 Compliance Team in Student Records, and that a note to this effect has been placed on their file.

Students who are ‘on vacation’ can work full-time, subject to the restrictions above.

International Students – Working After Studies

Students who have successfully completed their studies will be permitted to switch into Tier 2 (General) from within the UK provided they have a job offer with an employer that holds a Tier 2 sponsor licence and submit a valid application before their Tier 4 leave expires .

Once the employer has issued the Certificate of Sponsorship the applicant should submit an application for ‘Leave To Remain’ (a visa) under Tier 2 (General) but can start working for the employer immediately if the employer is A rated or above . There is no requirement to wait until the visa has been issued.

Applicants applying to switch from Tier 4 (General) to Tier 2 (General) from April 2012 need to meet all of the requirements of Tier 2 but the job will not be subject to the Resident Labour Market Test.

PhD students who pass their viva with minor corrections may be eligible to apply for the Tier 4 Doctoral Extension Scheme (DES) which will give them an additional 12 months of Tier 4 (General) immigration permission in which to look for and start work in the UK. Tier 4 DES visa holders cannot work as a doctor or dentist in training, or as a professional sportsperson or sports coach with this type of visa, but there are no other restrictions on the hours or type of work they can do. DES visa holders who wish to remain in the UK for longer than 12 months would need to ‘switch’ into Tier 2 or another category of the Immigration Rules before their DES visa expires.

Further informationFor more information on Tier 2 please see https://www.gov.uk/tier-2-general and for Tier 4 (DES) see https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa You could also contact the Visa Guidance Team by email at [email protected]

Use the key to identify exhibiting employers which hold a Tier 2 Licence and make sure you discuss your application with them.

Teach First is an independent charity that provides the training and support to enable exceptional graduates and experienced professionals to make a real impact in addressing one of the UK’s most damaging social issues, educational disadvantage. At the same time, while transforming the lives of young people in schools around the country, Teach First helps graduates to dramatically enhance their own career potential, in schools and elsewhere, and become part of a movement that is effecting profound change throughout the UK.

African AdventuresAfrican Adventures is the UK’s most effective volunteer travel organisation, working tirelessly to deliver incredible trips with community projects in developing areas of Ghana and Kenya. We are proud to organise unique travel experiences for hundreds of people each year from a range of organisations including schools, colleges, sports clubs and charities. Crucially, our work in Africa is led by the projects and not dictated by African Adventures. The projects are independent organisations which have been set up by residents in the respective communities we work in and we recruit volunteers for specific purposes, making for more meaningful, worthwhile trips.

St John Ambulance We believe that it’s absolutely unacceptable that so many people die needlessly because no one could give them first aid when they needed it.

St John Ambulance teaches people first aid - about 800,000 last year alone - so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. Through the University of Southampton first aid society you can learn these life saving skills for free and even become one of our St John Ambulance volunteers at public events.
