By demanding the liberation of health data — through the efforts of BHCAG and its members — Minnesotans will have access to more information, faster, than anyone in the country:Information is owned by individuals — not health plans, providers or employersPeople have the health information they need, when they need itInformation is reliable, because it comes straight from the source Users can store more information, all in one safe and convenient locationNo need to manually input health records; the system connects to physician’s offices, hospitals, medical devices, insurance companies, social networks, and other information sourcesInterconnectivity and interoperability puts people at the center of care, allowing them to share only the information they chooseThe system is designed to operate with other platforms, as they become available, to meet evolving needs

Why is this so important?Five “inconvenient truths” of health communication Unhealthy lifestyles are putting our nation’s workforce and economy

at risk The average person lacks the information and understanding to

make informed health decisions Engaging consumers in health care requires a fresh new approach

to grab people’s attention and motivate them to take action

Consumers don’t trust health plans to be caretakers of their health information

Consumers fear losing health information when they switch plans

13

More than 91 million Americans cannot

adequately understand basic health care information
