I’ve been lucky enough to wear Lazer helmets for most of my racing career and after

getting to know the family of people behind the brand I can really say nobody is

more passionate about making a high quality product with a real sense of style while

keeping comfort and safety the highest priority. In Belgium cycling is a so deeply part of

the culture and Lazer Helmets is synonymous with that culture. I hope to only wear a Lazer

helmet for the rest of my pedal pushing days!LADY

A friend of mine showed me this wall ride about a year ago after he saw one of the Metal Mulisha guys on a video hit this wall ride. So I have

wanted to do this wall ride on my bike since, just waiting for the right time. It had rained the day before so it was a good day to get some friends

together with shovels and do some work on it. The landing was the hardest part to make work as it was too far away from the wall. We did all we could

with the time we had to work with to make it as best we could. I had a friend of mine tow me in with his motorcycle because it was a fl at run in and the take off

was about 8 feet tall, so I needed to have a lot of speed going into it.DOW

My kids love their Lazer helmets. They are fully and easily adjustable, and they can

do it themselves in a matter of seconds! They are great for the changing weather in

Belgium when the morning trip to school could require a hat underneath and the trip

home requires nothing... or vice versa! Lazers are comfortable and my kids think the

designs are really cool! So, instead of having to beg them to put their helmets on for a

ride, I sometimes have to beg them to take them off !KID

MipsLazer and MIPSLazer helmets and MIPS have collaborated to make one of the

safest children’s helmets available. The Multi-directional Impact

Protection System is now available in the P’Nut and Nut’Z children

helmets to make then perform even better in the event of a crash.

Mimicking the brainThe secret behind MIPS’ unique patent comes from the human brain, The brain

is surrounded by a low-friction cushion of cerebrospinal fl uid. MIPS imitates the

brain’s way of protecting itself by giving the helmet its own low-friction layer

between the outer shell and the liner, to absorb much of the energy created by

a blow to the head. The combination of the brain’s own protection and MIPS

therefore ensures maximum protection for the rider. Very simple, yet very

eff ective.

The outer shell slides on impact, radically reducing the damage to your brain.

MIPS imitates the brain’s own protection system and sets a new standard in

helmet safety.

Real World Impact TestingConventional helmets are tested by dropping them vertically onto a fl at surface.

MIPS has had 15 years of study and testing in Sweden by some of the world’s

leading researchers and brain surgeons. MIPS is based on a diff erent testing

principle – reality. Because in reality when you fall, your head hits the ground

at an angle and in motion, creating a rotation in the brain, which in turn causes

major damage. With MIPS, the helmet absorbs much of that damaging rotation,

off ering you radically better protection.

The MIPS patent was developed by some of the world’s leading researchers in

biomechanics and neuroscience at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and

the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. In the same way that cars are now tested

for side impact and have airbags at both the front and the side, MIPS is setting

a new standard for helmets. The result of the MIPS technology in a helmet

becomes evident when you compare the results of brain scans during impact.

Both scans were taken when a crash occurs at exactly the same speed and angle,

but the outcomes are very diff erent. The more red areas, the more damage to

the brain.

Deformation of the brain from an oblique impact when the

user is wearing a conventional helmet and a helmet with

MIPS technology.

How it worksWhen the head is subjected to an impact, the brain slides

along a membrane on the inner surface of the skull, which

reduces the forces transmitted to the brain. This natural

defense system was copied and technically improved

upon to create the MIPS technology which has shown a

dramatic reduction of the forces to the brain. The result

is that in case of an impact the chance of a brain injury or

concussion are greatly minimized.

aerosheLLThe Aero Shell is a plastic cover, designed to

fi t perfectly over some of the Lazer helmets.

The Aero Shell snaps into place and protects

the riders head from wind and rain while

still allowing for some air movement under

the front of the helmet and out the rear

vents. The Aero Shell is unique in that it

is easily removed from the helmet when

riding conditions are such that additional

ventilation is desired.

Snap it on when the rain is pouring down

and pull it off when the sun starts to shine,

the Aeroshell is the perfect tool to ride, in

every possible condition.

In 2012 the following helmets will have an Aeroshell available:

VentiLation researchWearing a helmet on a sweltering summer day can be hot and uncomfortable for recreational

cyclists. For athletes, badly ventilated helmets may even temper top performances. Smartly

positioned ventilation ports and internal air channels help to combat this problem. Are current

ventilation ports and channels designed for optimal helmet ventilation? How can we improve

helmet ventilation? To answer these questions Lazer Sport has teamed up with researchers

from one of the most esteemed universities in Western Europe, the Katholieke Universiteit

Leuven (K.U.Leuven).

Lazer has always been at the forefront of design and innovation. First we successfully solved

the problem of excessive helmet weight. Then we created the ideal solution for adjusting

helmet fi t. Now we focus on creating a solution that provides optimal helmet ventilation.

Well ventilated helmets are important since the head is an important area for heat loss. When

cycling, only about 20% to 25% of the produced energy is transferred into mechanical energy

1; this is the energy used to drive your legs. Therefore for 75% to 80% of the total produced

energy is transferred into heat. During climbing or sprinting, heat production is even higher.

This heat needs to be removed to keep core body temperature within its limits. When core

body temperature tends to increase, sweating will occur. Sweat allows the removing of heat

if suffi cient ventilation is provided such that it can evaporate. 2,3,4 Insuffi ciently ventilated

helmets may cause heat stress and increased local sweat production5, as the head tries to

overcome a defi cient evaporative cooling. A well ventilated helmet helps to keep the head cool.

The result? Longer and harder rides with less chance for overheating. In short, a well ventilated

helmet keeps your head in the game and your body at peak performance.

Cool your head!

In collaboration with the division of Measure, Model and Manage Bioresponses (M3-BIORES)

of K.U.Leuven Lazer Sport is currently investigating how helmet ventilation can be improved.

How can we design the internal helmet structure such that airfl ow is not blocked between head

and helmet? How can we improve inlet systems for airfl ow at the front and outlet systems for

airfl ow at the rear?

The test installations allow quantifying local thermal responses of the head under a helmet

(e.g. skin temperature, air temperature and sweat production) at test persons in a wind tunnel

while controlling ambient air temperature. Additionally, a setup is available to monitoring local

ventilation effi ciency in the volume between head and helmet using a manikin head in a wind

tunnel6.

Based on the outcomes of this collaboration, Lazer Sport has reviewed and redeveloped the

airfl ow systems of their products to maximize the ventilation and cooling.

In all honesty, helmets are a necessary evil, they can be hot, uncomfortable and annoying…

but you wear them in the hope that you will never need it. At Lazer we recognize that wearing

a helmet is not always enjoyable or practical, yet we encourage every rider to wear a helmet

whether you are a professional rider in a bunch sprint or a commuter on your way to work.

Simply put, when you do crash it will provide protection against impact and potentially save

your life.

Lazer helmets are made to reduce the possibility of severe head injury. Research has shown

that up to 70% of fatal cycling accidents are due to head injuries 1,2,3. So protecting your head

in a crash is more than important. More specifi cally, it was found that wearing a bicycle helmet

can prevent or reduce between 60% and 69% of fatal head injuries that are caused by cycling

accidents 4,5,6.

Lately there has been a heightened awareness of the frequency and eff ects of head injury in

cycling and in sports in general 7. While this is more of a problem in contact sports such as

football or hockey, cycling is not immune. Getting to know the signs and symptoms of minor

head injuries as well as the risks of ignoring them is benefi cial for every rider.

While a head injury sounds very severe the more classic and widely understood term,

“concussion” strikes a little fear in everyone. A concussion can be the result from even a mild

force to the head. While the understanding of a concussion remains relatively unclear, much is

known about the short- and long-term eff ects of even mild concussion 8,9:

I. The likelihood of a second concussion is much higher after a fi rst episode.

II. Post-concussion syndrome can consist of dizziness, diffi culty concentrating, headaches,

nausea and vomiting, and may last from days to months.

III. Repeated concussions may result in memory loss and progressive brain deterioration.

So whatever reason you can fi nd for not wearing a helmet, think about concussions and how

easily you can avoid them by wearing a helmet.

X-static® paDDings

X-static® airpaDs

Proven by US Special Forces, NASA Astronauts and Olympic

athletes, X-STATIC® delivers unmatched protection and

performance.

Made with 99.9% pure silver, X-STATIC® enhances products with

permanent anti-odor and antimicrobial performance. It naturally inhibits the

growth of bacteria in fabrics, keeping odors in check and your helmet smelling

fresher. X-STATIC® also has natural temperature regulating properties, refl ecting

heat back to keep you warm and evaporating moisture faster to keep you cool.

The X-static padding, in combination with airpads, is the best

ventilation technology on the market today. X-static padding

keeps your head cooler when it’s hot and warmer when it’s cold.

The combination of X-static padding and the airpads provide the

most effi cient method to keep your helmet well ventilated.

Product Benefi ts• Eliminates Odor in the garment - Permanently

• Regulates Temperature – cooler in the summer

and warmer in the winter

• Minimizes Static – the conductivity of silver

dissipates static charges

• Permanent Performance – lasts the life of the

product

cooLMaXCOOLMAX® fabric is the performance fabric that includes an

eff ective fi ber-based moisture management system. The system

can move perspiration away from the body, and through the

fabric, where it can evaporate quickly, allowing the wearer to feel

cooler and more comfortable.

Magic BUcKLeThe Magic buckle allows riders to quickly close or open the

buckle connecting the two straps. With one hand the rider just

pushes it open or closes it by bringing the male and female

part close together, magnetic forces do the rest. Thanks to this

solution the hassle of opening or closing your buckle is now a problem of the

past. Even in winter when wearing gloves, riders can easily open and close the

buckle without any diffi culties. It will also prevent skin from getting in between

the lock which is very handy for the under 10 and older riders.
