Brother Derek Coming of Age... Brother Derek opened his account with a Hollywoodmaiden win last May, then resurfaced at Del Mar with a

third-place finish versus statebreds in the I’m Smokin S. Sept.5. The $275,000 BESMAR juve-nile purchase scored a front-run-ning victory in his two-turn de-but in the Oct. 2 GII Norfolk S.,then was a well-beaten fourthbehind Stevie Wonderboy in theGI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile atBelmont Oct. 29. Brother Derekbounced back off that effortwell, posting a game victory inthe GI Hollywood Futurity lastout Dec. 17. As for what’s nextfor Brother Derek, trainer DanHendricks said, “We’re not wor-

ried about it. Probably the race here at Santa Anita thefirst week in March [GII Santa Catalina S., Mar. 4], butwe’ll keep every option open. He can run from three tosix, seven weeks apart.”

No Shame in Finishing Second... Off since his Breeders’ Cup score, Stevie Wonderboydid well to finish second in his two-turn and sophomoredebut. “He ran huge,” trainer Doug O’Neill said. “Any-time you get Brother Derek out there on the front endgoing 23 and change, you know you’ve got trouble. One of our concerns was that he’d get an easy leadand when he does, he’s a tough horse. My horse ran agood race. You don’t want to peak too early in theyear.” Stevie Wonderboy’s regular jockey GarrettGomez was aboard again yesterday for the San Rafael.“My horse was getting a little bit tired,” Gomez com-mented. “My horse is so big, I was really asking him tothe quarter pole, but Alex [Solis] was just cruising andwe just couldn’t quite make up that much ground.”

He made a big return to the dirt at Louisiana, postinga 10 3/4-length victory in a $50,000 optional claimerDec. 9 and reported home 8 1/2 lengths clear in the

Diamond Jo S. at EvangelineDowns last time Dec. 31. Sentoff as the second choice in thewagering here, he stalked Markof Success through an openingquarter, then went up to pressthat one shortly thereafter. Be-ginning to edge clear on the farturn, Lawyer Ron drew off im-pressively in the stretch to report

home a convincing winner in the GIII Risen Star S. “Hejust drew off again,” winning trainer Bob Holthus said.“He’s getting better. He always showed some talent. Ihad about 20 two-year-old maidens at the time and helooked like he wanted to be on the turf, so we startedhim there. For a colt, he’s easy to work with around thebarn and easy to rate on the track. He’s fun to bearound. If anything, the way he finished was the mostimpressive. At Evangeline, he ran the last quarter in :23and change. That’s hard to do on that track.”
