LHS Dress CodePhilosophy – Clothing expresses one’s attitude and personality as well as the attitude and personality of an institution. Clothing also

reflects and influences behavior. The school environment calls for a seriousness of purpose and some level of formality. This should be reflected in theclothes we wear and the attitude we bring to learning. Though your clothing reflects your personality, it should not interfere or be in conflict with the primarypurpose of this institution, which is your intellectual, moral, and ethical development.

The purpose of a dress code is to teach and model lasting principles of dress and behavior, not simply to address the latest fashions or fads. These guidelines address appropriate attire for settings as diverse as a science laboratory, an art class or a math class. Recognizing the variety in body typeand structure, these guidelines offer methods for dressing in a reasonably modest, comfortable, and appropriate manner for most circumstances. A “tuck-in” policy is in place at LHS. Shirts must be no more than one size larger and must be tucked in. Guidelines: Clothing should be size appropriate, clean, neat, modest, and meet the following criteria while standing, sitting, walking, bending, or reaching.

Clothing should be appropriate in length while standing, sitting, walking, bending and reaching. Garment must be longer than the longest finger tipwhen the student’s arm is fully extended by the side of the body. This applies to shorts, skirts and dressesClothes may not be sheer or see throughAppropriate under garments must be worn and must be out of sight at all timesSkin exposure should be kept to a minimum, for example bare midriffs, backless clothing, etc will not be allowed. A student must be able to makecommon movements and still be within dress codeNo holes above the tip of the longest finger when the student’s arm is fully extended by the side of the body.GIRLS- No spaghetti straps. No part of your underwear should be seen at anytimeBOYS- No muscle shirts or tank topsBOYS- The waistband of your pants or shorts must be above the hipbones at all times. This applies even if a sweater or shirt cover pantsNo spandex, leggings worn as pants, bike shorts or pantsNo hats, headbands, scarves, bandannas, caps, curlers, rakes, picks, combs, nets, etc or sunglasses may be worn in the buildingClothing or accessories bearing slogans that are about or are suggestive of drugs, alcohol, sex, or contain or suggest obscenities, or that prove tobe a disturbing influence will not be allowed at LHSPajamas should not be worn to school

A violation of the dress code may require the student to remove the article of clothing or accessory, change clothes, and/or other punishmentat the discretion of the administration.

NOTE: The principal or assistant principals will make the final judgment concerning attire or accessories that do not fall into one of theabove categories but may still be considered inappropriate or disruptive to the educational program.

Rutherford County Notice of Intent to Notify The Department of Safety for Revocation of Student’s Driver’s LicenseBy law, the Rutherford County School System is required to notify the Tennessee Department of Safety, and the parent(s)/guardian(s) when a student is in violationof the current Driver’s License Laws. The same laws apply for a student’s being ineligible to apply for a learner’s permit or a driver’s license and to keep/maintaina valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. Thus, whether or not a student ever makes application for a learner’s permit or a driver’s license, the name of anyineligible student is automatically entered into the computer system of the Tennessee Department of Safety.Additionally, the laws allow for a revoked license or privilege to obtain a license or learner’s permit to be reinstated one (1) time only before a student reaches theage of eighteen (18). To regain the privilege to drive, a student must pass three (3) full unit subjects or their equivalency at the conclusion of the next fullgrading period. The RCSS defines the next full grading period as the next full six weeks’ grading period. The student must request the reinstatement certificate fromhis/her individual school’s attendance department. Once a student’s driving privilege has been reinstated and then revoked again due to poor attendance orunsatisfactory academic progress, it is beyond the Rutherford County School System to intervene for your student in regaining his/her driving privileges. These laws do allow a student to be “excused” from having his or her name submitted to the Tennessee Department of Safety if the school system, who is by law“the sole judge,” determines that “circumstances beyond his or her control” caused the student not to meet the attendance and/or academic requirements of the law. However, suspension or expulsion from school, confinement in a detention center or correctional institution, negligence in submitting a note to excuse an absence, being married, having a child or children, or being employed are not circumstances deemed beyond the student’s control and are therefore not reasons which willbe considered.

Automobiles and ParkingStudents driving to school must obtain a parking permit from the front office. Students, faculty and staff must park in the assigned parking spot. Besides regulartraffic laws, the following rules are to be followed by student drivers:

1. All students who drive cars to school must have and display a school-parking permit. Cost of the permit is $10. This is necessary for vehicle identificationpurposes.

2. No student will be allowed to drive away from school during school hours without permission from the office.3. Students are to lock their cars when leaving them. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen articles or damage.4. Do not block or park in any way to keep another vehicle from leaving. If parking becomes a problem, driving privileges may be denied.5. No tardiness to school for car trouble will be excused.6. Reckless driving may result in the loss of driving privileges.7. All students should park in the parking spaces that coincide with their parking permit number. A line should be visible on both sides of the vehicle.10. Students are not allowed in parking lots during school hours unless they have a permission from an administrator.11. Senior parking lot will be on Chaney Road side of LHS. Sophomore and Junior parking will be the parking lot located on Wolverine Trail.

During the times of 8:00 am to 8:30a.m and 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. there should not be any traffic in the bus lanes on the Chaney Road side of the building. Parentsshould pick up students on the Wolverine Trail side of the building.

Speed LimitLHS is a closed campus. The campus is not to be used for public through traffic. The speed limit on the LHS campus is always 5 mph. Failure to abide by theserules may result in the towing of the vehicle involved and the forfeiture of all automobile privileges.

Visitors to CampusOurs is a closed campus. Visitors are not permitted except for official reasons approved by the principal’s office. Students are not to bring guests to school, as ourfull-time efforts must be directed toward our own students.Students from other high schools are welcome when they are representatives of their school. In this case, their principal or secretary should contact us in advanceor send a written statement explaining their visit. Social visits are not allowed. LHS student visitors to another school will be expected to behave in a manner thatis acceptable and extend their visit no longer than the time allowed for the visit. Trespassing is a crime and the offending party is subject to arrest.

Medications and Emergency Medical TreatmentMedications – It is against the policy of the Rutherford County School Board and Tennessee State law for school personnel to provide or administer any kind ofmedication other than first aid to students. Only designated personnel may dispense medications. This includes aspirin in its various forms as well as over-thecounter drugs that do not contain aspirin but are intended to have the same remedial effects as aspirin. This policy is based upon the fact that some students (with or without their knowledge) are allergic to certain drugs and medications. Therefore we must avoid anychance of accidentally aggravating any allergy and thereby possibly worsening a student’s condition or even, in extreme cases, creating a life-threatening situation.

Emergency Medical Services – In the event that a student requires an ambulance to be transported to the hospital emergency room from school, the schoolwill call the ambulance only if we are unable to reach the parents and if the emergency appears to life-threatening in nature.
