Welcome to summer second half term. We hope that you

all have had a wonderful week, enjoying the weather with your family and taking a break from your work timetables.

This newsletter is a little later to be released than usual. We’re sure you can all appreciate that it was a very busy last few weeks in school and we had to prioritise ensuring school was ready to open to more children as had initially been directed. Covid-19 won’t stop us celebrating all the amazing achievements that are going on in all your homes, so we’re starting this half term off with a newsletter as a reminder of the many, many positives that took place in our community last half term.

As you know, Durham County Council gave all headteachers the directive to delay the opening of schools to more children for a further two weeks, after which the situation will be risk assessed again. I want to say a huge thank you to all staff who worked so hard to ensure that we were ready to open to all eligible children from the 1st June. Consequently, we are already prepared for this when a further directive comes from the Local Authority. We are very keen and excited to get children back into school, but only at a time that is right and safe.

Page 3: Laurel Avenue Community Primary School and Nursery · Laurel Avenue Primary School, its amazing staff, pupils and families are all very special and it is a pleasure to have spent

An updated version of the guide will be sent out to all parents and carers to keep you informed at each stage and we will communicate all new information from County as soon as we receive any.

Thank you to all parents and carers who spoke to school staff before making the

decision whether or not to send their child back to school. We respect all your

decisions and will continue to do so; we know that every decision made was not easy.

Home learning will continue as has become normal practice. Every Monday, timetables and activities will be uploaded to your child’s class page on the school website, as well as a letter from each teacher. If you need support with any technical issue or because your child is struggling with a certain part of the work, teachers are working hard from home to support with this, so please send them an email.

We all think you’re doing a really brilliant job with home learning. The photographs and work that are regularly emailed to us show the commitment you have towards your children’s education. Don’t forget, you’re not alone in this so please get in touch about anything.

Stay safe and keep in touch. We’re in this together.

Gaynor Davison

You have been invited to take part in the Laurel Avenue Community Primary School Rainbow Challenge!

Your challenge is to create an image based on a colour theme. Use items from around your homes to create a colour picture like the pictures shown on the front page.

When you are finished, email your picture to

[email protected] We are going to make a beautiful rainbow display in school with the pictures; a positive memory that we will never forget.

We would love for as many children to be included as possible. Thank you.

Thank you for all the colourful Rainbow Challenge pictures, including those displayed on the front page of this newsletter.

A special message of congratulations to Mrs Walters.

The start of this summer term marked twenty years

since Mrs Walters started teaching at Laurel Avenue

Community Primary School. Over all those years, she has

taught hundreds of children, including some of you, our

now parents, and we have loved being able to go on and

teach your children. Mrs Walters has worked with

dedication and enthusiasm for all of these twenty years

and has played a significant part in the improvements

made to school. We have enjoyed working every day with

her and would like to thank her for all her hard work and

commitment. She is a hugely valued member of our team

and we are really lucky to have had her as part of the

team for all these years. Thank you!

Laurel Avenue Primary School, its amazing staff, pupils

and families are all very special and it is a pleasure to

have spent 20 years working with you all. Anyone who

works with children knows that it is not a job, it's part

of your life and I hope Laurel Avenue continues to be a

big part of my life for many years to come. I wish we

could be at school with you all doing what we all do best

but I hope everyone is safe and well and home.

Miss you all. Take care. Mrs Walters x

We were so proud to hear that some of our children had

entered the Fire and Rescue Poster competition and had

taken a lot of effort with their entries!

Avika created a fabulous poster, presented to a high standard.

Samual also entered and we're very proud to announce that he came

second! Congratulations! He has won a Tesco voucher and he will get an

invite to the Fire and Rescue headquarters in September!

There has been some AMAZING science completed by children during the last half term! It’s been really difficult to choose just a few examples for our

newsletter. If you haven’t tried one of our ‘Science Fun at Home’ investigation sheets yet, look back on

Facebook or on the ‘All Updates’ page on the school website and you will find them all still there. We will continue to upload these activities every week – on Science Thursday! Children have also been completing

their home learning science work every Thursday afternoon really well. We love to see photographs of you

completing your science and the science work itself. Thank you for sharing.

We celebrated National Pet Month by sharing

pictures of our best friends, our pets. It was great to meet them all.

Can you remember who these pets belong to?

Let's Get Cooking at Home! Mrs Davison, our Let’s Get Cooking

coordinator, was so happy to see some of the tasty treats you had been cooking at home that she wanted to try and get everyone

cooking! She selected some of our favourite Let's Get Cooking recipes that children have

loved to cook and eat over the years. You can find the recipes on our school website: https://laurelprimaryschool.fluencycms.co.uk/LetsGetCooking

Even if you haven't had your turn to take part in Let's Get Cooking yet, you can still use the recipes to create some delicious dishes. Just look at some of the amazing dishes that our children have created!

We were very lucky to be

able learn about two sets

of eggs hatched at home!

Kaiden documented

every stage and

recorded his

observations. Look at

his fabulous chicks!

Kayden and Presten also

looked after eggs in

their incubator.

They showed us the

candling of an egg,

where they looked

inside to check on

the growth and

development of

an embryo. More

wonderful chicks!

super scientists learning about life cycles as

well as being creative through making models,

painting and using technology.

We can’t wait to see what you

will be learning about this half term!
