Launching a New EraIt was a truly historic week, showcasing brilliant
facets of a dynamic institution and providing
a glimpse of a bright future being forged. The
University of Miami’s Inauguration Week, which
culminated with the installation of Julio Frenk as
the University’s sixth president, was held January
24-30, 2016.
Special events held on all three campuses—
ranging from athletics events and a look at
University milestones to talks by leading UM
thinkers, a building groundbreaking, community
reception, and much more—provided numerous
opportunities for the ’Canes family and friends
to unite in a spirit of celebration. Alumni gath-
ered at remote locations for parties to view
televised and web-streamed events.
The magnificent Inauguration Week, captured in
the following pages, exemplifies the vibrancy of
the University of Miami and how President Frenk’s
noble vision for its future is well within reach.

women’s athletic teams.

FIRSTS AT UM
Firsts at UM featured a conversation with President Julio
Frenk and historian, alumna, and Trustee Arva Moore
Parks that explored UM milestones since the University
was chartered in 1925. A fascinating collection of
University artifacts from the Libraries’ University
Archives, the UM Sports Hall of Fame, and the Alumni
Association was displayed as part of the event.

NEW CENTURY OF MEDICAL EDUCATION AND INNOVATION
President Julio Frenk celebrated the importance of the Miller School
of Medicine and UHealth at a celebration in the heart of the medical
campus. The event featured a ceremonial groundbreaking for the
new medical education building and the renaming of the clinical
research building, both made possible by major gifts from the Miller
and Soffer families.

’Cane Talks marked the launch of a new tradition at UM, with ten-minute
presentations by leading thinkers in the UM community illuminating big
questions we face in the next century. Eight faculty scholars, along with a
distinguished alumna and an accomplished student, explored major global

INAUGURATION CEREMONY
Julio Frenk was inaugurated as the sixth president of the
University of Miami at the installation ceremony. More
than 3,000 people attended, including delegates from 99
universities and learned societies, elected officials and civic
and business leaders, and diplomatic representatives from
28 countries. In his inspiring inaugural address, “Charting
the Course to Our New Century,” President Frenk
discussed plans for the institution to achieve greatness in
four aspirational areas by its 100th anniversary in 2025.
