KAY TOWN06www.latesthomes.co.uk/brighton
Kay TownAndrew Kay is having a taste of his own medicine
SPONSORED BYBARDSLEY’S FISH & CHIPS
T he other day I got home exhausted and sat on a biscuit tin. Needlessto say it buckled under my weight and is now of no use whatsoever.Sadly it was not our biscuit tin; our biscuits seldom last long enough
to require being kept in an airtight container. We do have a biscuit tin butwe use it to keep patent medicines in. Within its depths there are ointments, unguents and unctions, lozenges, pastilles, pills, potions and powders.
Having grown up in St Helens, Lancashire (I still refuse to think of it asMerseyside) all ailments were dealt with by the administering of Beecham’sPowders. The local company had a massive red brick building right in the centreof town and for many locals it was the alternative to working for Pilkington Glass.
Sir Thomas Beecham, conductor and author of one of the finest andsauciest quotes relating to the cello, was the family’s most famous son, andperhaps the town’s too. I can’t think of many famous names that hail from theplace that was once my home. Oh of course, Johnny Vegas, that makes mefeel slightly better and of course the much missed Pete McCarthy who mighthave claimed Warrington as home but went to school in St Helens.
I digress – as always. The pill tin hasbeen much in demand this week as bothof us seem to be harbouring the Sussexcollection of viral cold bugs, hackingcoughs, runny noses... the works.
I know that there is little point going to see the doctor, after all a cold is acold and not much can be done, although I do feel that sometimes they liketelling you off for wasting their time. Maybe that’s how they get their kicks, berating us for worrying about our health. I seem to remember an equalnumber of occasions when I have been told off for not coming to the doctorsooner. You can’t win, can you?
So a tin full of patent remedies has to be the answer, surely? Even if I domix and match them with an alarmingly liberal approach. After all, what harmcan it do? Probably more than I think, especially as I never ever check thebest before dates. I’m not dead yet though, not quite.

T here is a distinct grandeur tothis week’s property, a statelyatmosphere that comes with
lots of added extras that will makehome life feel like you are living in ahealth spa. Swimming pool, gymnasium and tennis courts areseldom standard to a moderndevelopment. It also happens to liein one the prettiest valleys inSussex right on the edge of the newnational park with rural vistas onall sides. That said, Brighton is ashort drive away with all of theurban delights one might need tomake this the perfect mix.For more information on this property or any of our otherproperties, visit www.latesthomes.co.uk/brighton

The Landlady Building Opinions
I f there is one thing as sure as Christmas arriving on 25 December, it is thedepressing fact that by mid-October I will be in receipt of a wailing call fromone of my tenants, claiming that their boiler is broken. I thought I’d got away
with it this year, as by 14 October nothing had happened and the LandladyTowers Empire appeared to be functioning like a slick machine.
On 15 October, I received an email from my wonderful letting agent inHastings claiming that the tenant in mine and Katy’s flat had no heating or hotwater. In spite of the fact that these tenants are rather sporadic with their rentpayments – in fact, they haven’t paid the rent for three months – they have asmall child, and there was a brisk north-easterly whipping along the coastlending an undesirable chill factor. Heavy hearted (because I know that thisparticular boiler is the Lazarus of the central heating world), I called myHastings plumber and awaited the bad news with chequebook at the ready.
Ideally, I’d switch off the boiler and emigrate for the winter, and I am sufferingfrom heat envy having just received a text from a good friend who’s off to theCaribbean tomorrow. Even my own family members are off gallivanting and TheBig Son has just returned from Turkey, where he spent a week with his girlfriend.
In the pub last Thursday while he was away, I was having a drink with acouple of girls The Big Daughter went to school with. One of them asked if The Big Son was any better, as she’d heard via Facebook that he was really ill.As I don’t – and will never – ‘do’ Facebook, this was the first I’d heard about it,so I texted him immediately toask if he was okay. Fool that Iam, I actually expected a replyto my concerned missive, butmy phone remained silent forthe rest of the week. Iassumed he was either not asill as we first imagined, or thathe was so ill he couldn’t evenlift his texting finger, in which case hisgirlfriend would probably get in touch, so Ileft well (or rather ill) alone.
On Sunday morning while having a lie-in,my sleep was rudely disturbed by two textmessages coming through at once. It wasthe miraculously resurrected Big Son, hisfirst text asking why The Big Daughter wasnot at work and the second urging me to goto her bedroom to makesure she was alive. The Big Daughter’sboss had textedhim to ask why hissister wasn’t at work. When they were babies, I usedto check they were still alive allthe time. I didn’t expect to have to do it in intheir mid-twenties. You will be delighted toknow that The Big Daughter was indeedstill very much alive, had overslept andwas very indignant when I went into herroom to check that she was stillbreathing. That’s scare-mongeringmodern technology for you. follow me on twitter @robert_nemeth
The Landlady battles with modern technology
A s a committee member of theRegency Society, some yearsago, I wondered how we would
celebrate the bicentenary of theRegency period. Regency SocietyWeekend, which celebrated the 200thanniversary of the end of the firstyear of the Regency era, was all that Iimagined and more.
Regency Society Weekend broughttogether some of the finest speakers inthe country including Sir Simon Jenkinsand Dan Cruikshank. I attended the talkof my friend Jackie Marsh-Hobbs to seewhat she had to say about the originsof the Regency Society andconservation of the Royal Pavilion.
The story begins in 1850 whenQueen Victoria sold the Royal Pavilionto the people of Brighton. Buteverything was removed from within, much of which was put in storage in thebasement of Kensington Palace or installedin the new east wing of Buckingham Palacewhich was completed that same year.Chandeliers were even taken, asevidenced by the distinctivechandelier from the Pavilion’sMusic Room which can be seen tothis day behind members of theroyal family when they stand onthe famous Buckingham Palacebalcony while waving to the public. Some chandeliers were returned during the 1860s but many are replacements.
The Pavilion gradually fell into disrepair. Muddy bronze-coloured paint sooncovered gold leaf. The entrance hall doors were painted corporation green. Anambitious group called the Regency Festival Committee ran a series ofsuccessful events – Regency Exhibitions – from 1946. These public displaysdemonstrated to visitors just how special the Pavilion could be with the rightfurniture in place. The Regency Society was formed the year before, andshared members with the Festival Committee, and also contributedphotographs and other items to the exhibitions.
The legacy of the Regency Exhibitions was a restored Royal Pavilion. Theycarried on until the 1970s until the Pavilion provided all-year-round completeexhibitions of its own, as it does to this day. When the Regency FestivalCommittee disbanded in 1957, its profits of £4,480 were given to the RegencySociety and used to purchase various items which exist in the Pavilion untilthis day, such as the carpet in the Banqueting Room and a bust of George IV.
It may have lasted for just several days, but Regency Society Weekendcaptured the magic of those influential Regency Exhibitions of old. The currentcommittee should be very proud indeed.See www.regencysociety.co.uk to join [email protected], www.buildingopinions.com

Distracted Dad Mama MaloneRichard Hearn appreciates eccentricities
Two bananas and a dinosaur stuffed in anambulance. No, not a headline about thedemise of the NHS, but Youngest™
playing, eccentrically. A few daysearlier, the same objects werein the ambulance too. There’sa pattern developing, I justwish I knew what it meant.
I used to think the wordeccentric applied to old people. If so, my two kids have really startedputting in their apprenticeships early. The Boy used to be like it, andYoungest™, well, Youngest™ is in adifferent league.
Let’s start from memory with TheBoy. His top three eccentricitieswere: 1) he always had to openthe door of the microwave whenit pinged. Even ifengrossed in some toyor game, or virtuallyasleep; 2) he seemed to hate crossingthresholds like going inor out of our front door,as if allergic to a lintel;3) he very muchenjoyed wearing stripes, whether hats, T-shirts, trousers or socks. Dressedcrazily, I sometimes wondered, if he were to walk near a supermarket‘s till, would they think he was a set of barcodes and charge us £54.71?
Youngest™ shares the stripy theme, and will often meticulously name thecolours involved. He does this colour naming thing with other stuff, too. Latefor an appointment the other day, he insisted on pressing the pay anddisplay button. “Not blue.” “No, not blue. We’re in a hurry.” “Not red,” he says, wagging his finger. “No, not red, come on, hurry up.” “Green. I press green.”
His other eccentricities are also accompanied by a wag of the finger. Onthe school run this week he insisted we took up two toy plates, and someplastic cheese and peas – these I was to carry – while he carried Noddy, PCPlod and Big Ears. Then he went loopy up at the school when he realised hewasn’t wearing his stripy hat.
Youngest™’s eccentricity is not just confined to objects. If we mistakenly callhim by another pet name, “How are you, monkey?” or that sort of thing, he willanswer: “I not monkey, I baby tiger!” (I think tiger is in line with the stripypreference). He is most insistent. Trouble is, if you ask “are youplaying/happy/hungry?” he will also answer “I not playing, I baby tiger.” Hehasn’t quite got the idea that mood and species are mutually exclusive.
But there are layers to his understanding of self. While watching Toy Story, hebustled off to find a cowboy hat. “Are you Woody?” asked The Boy. “No!” shoutedYoungest™. “Are you a baby tiger pretending to be Woody?”. Youngest™ nodded.
His eccentricity means he is an enigma wrapped inside a puzzle wrappedinside a conundrum. Wearing something stripy.
S o I finally managed to write Daughter’s thank you cards. Two monthslate, not bad Malone, getting better. I don’t know what’s wrong with me;the weeks slip by, suddenly it’s nearly Christmas and angry aunties all
over the UK are scrubbing us off the Next voucher list. I can’t wait til she’s old enough to do this herself and I can blame Daughter
for the tardiness: “I know, I’m sorry Uncle Freddy, she’s just a terribleteenager.” Instead what happens is I come up with grand plans of makingvideo cards, or taking photos of herusing said birthday present (akeyboard, or a new dress) but thenthe equation of taking photo + puttingphoto onto computer + gettingannoyed at printer + finding anenvelope + emailing mother for yearly“what’re our relatives’ addressesagain?” conversation + procuring astamp (where are those 17 stampbooks I bought when they were cheap?) +remembering to take letters out ofhandbag when walking past a postboxand not carrying them for a week untilthey are dog-eared and covered in biscuitand lip balm = two month late thank youcards. It’s not a pleasing sum.
In future, I’ll use the more traditionalapproach: buy card, get child to scribble“fank you unkle Feddi” and go to thepost office, buy stamp and post at thevery same time. Much more efficient, andthis sum can result in a two weekturnaround, thus resulting in a secured Nextvoucher for next year. And best of all, the thankyou card vulture doesn’t sit on your shoulder formonths reminding you every time you check youremail: “Argkk Argkk! Stop looking at Groupon and makethank you cards, you distracted mess of a woman!”
I can imagine my naughty 13-year-old writing thankyou letters... “Dear Aunty Dawn, thanks for the Marks & Spencervouchers, have bought food with them as Mother denies me food, makingme hoover in exchange for gruel.” Hmm, maybe I should always be in chargeof thank you cards.
I am seriously considering starting my Christmas ones now; imagine myrelatives’ shock... would it be cheating if I sent thank yous ready-made intheir Christmas cards? “Thank you for the Next vouchers!” Don’t get mewrong, I am very grateful, I just have a long to-do list every day and the thankyou cards are at the bottom. Someone has just reminded me about onlinecard sending stores. Why had I forgotten about them? I remember one havingthe most evil, annoying theme tune, it’s like I just wiped it from my mind likea bad experience. Great, so now I’ve just accidentally written an advert foronline card stores; I'm possibly stupid as well as disorganised andungrateful! Dear relatives, instead of vouchers this Christmas, please sendbooklets of stamps, envelopes and many more hours in the day.

Ahappy home is a home with sufficient storagespace. How many family rows could beavoided if there were somewhere to actually
put those discarded clothes and toys? Or a place to shut all that stress-inducing clutter away andout of sight? At this time of year, the ratio of stuffto storage can reach a critical tipping point; yousimply run out of space. But overflowing cupboardsand drawers don’t mean you need to move – yousimply need to call in the professionals.
Richard Hill Interiors have been providingbespoke storage and furniture to Brighton and Hove
since 1994. Working with a wide range of clients, they’ve transformed people’s homes andbusinesses with fabulous, functional extra space.
Don’t move, improveYou might already have enough space – you justaren’t using it right. “Most people don’t realise thatthe right storage can almost double their usablespace,” says Richard, “so they think they need tomove when space gets tight. A bit of lateralthinking can save them space, and money. Why
move when a simple redesigncan solve the problem?”
Older-style properties simplyweren’t designed to cope withmulti-tasking modern life, andnew-builds rarely includesufficient storage. Clutter canstart to mount up, and thenchaos ensues. But you don’tneed a big home to beorganised, all you need is to besmart with the space you’ve got– which is where Richard HillInteriors can help. And improvingyour home now will be aninvestment for the future.Plentiful, well-designed andstylish storage will give yourhome the edge in any market.
Make space for your lifeLifestyle change often prompts people to sort outtheir storage. Clients often come to Richard after anew baby, starting to work from home, a housemove or another significant life event.
“Every home has ‘Cinderella’ spaces,” Richardsays, “Under the stairs, over doors, attics, awkwardcorners that people usually ignore, or even room atthe end of the garden for an office-come-occasionalspare room. Identifying and using the space in yourhome correctly can change your life.”
Expert intelligenceRichard Hill Interiors offer a full service from a freequotation through to design, planning, construction, and fitting. Working with your ideas, or bringingtheir own skills and experience to bear, they canhelp you to make the most of your space.Sometimes, size really does matter.

INTERIORS 13
I t’s that time of year when thingsstart to feel a little bit crowded;Halloween costumes, party
clothes, Christmas presents anddecorations all vie for storage spacewith the usual school stuff, sports kit,and household detritus. You may feellike you’ve run out of spacealtogether – but don’t panic, LatestInteriors is here to help with ourhandy guide to spot-on storage.
Spot the spaceThe average home has a surprisingamount of under-used and un-usedspace. Neglected walls, corners,under-the-stairs and over-the-doorsare all areas that can be put to goodwork. If you’re drowning in clutter, take a good look at your home, andthink creatively about any un-usedspace. But before you get carriedaway, remember that however muchstorage space you make, it will onlywork if you use it properly – so startby having a good sort out.
Clear it outIf you haven’t used or worn somethingfor more than two years, put it intolong term storage, sell it, or give itaway. Car boot sales, ebay, gumtree,Friday Ad and vintage fairs will all allow
you to make a few bob from yourunwanted gear. If you can’t face thehassle of selling, or want to put thecash to better use, then there arecharity shops aplenty in Brighton andHove – and many will come andcollect. Giving your unwanted stuffaway feels really good. Freecycle isanother great place for getting rid ofunwanted stuff. If the thought of thisoverwhelms you, call in a professional.A space therapist or professionalproperty ‘stylist’ will perform miracleswith your possessions, pruning awayunwanted stuff and reorganising youand your home.
Make the roomAre you making the most of yourhigh ceilings? Fabulous floor-to-ceiling shelves or cupboards makeuse of the inches or feet overhead. Amixture of open shelves and closedboxes or units works best. Thingsyou like or need to access can be left‘on show’, while the rest is shut tidilyaway. Under-the-stairs cupboardscan be fitted out with mix-and-matchstorage units to maximise space. Apull-out drawer for shoes, a tallcupboard for clothes or cleaningequipment, smaller drawers andeven a low unit for stowing thehoover away can be fitted beneath

most stairs. Widehallways can alsoaccommodate longfitted shelves, givingthe impression ofgreater space.
Walk-in wardrobesare brilliant for de-cluttering (they’realso a great sellingpoint). If you have a large front bedroomor attic room, theninstallation of asimple partition wallcould give you thatcoveted walk-inspace. Failing that, gofor fitted wardrobeswith a sensiblecombination ofhanging and shelves.Under-the-bed spacecan be utilised withdrawers or boxes. Inbathrooms, a wall ofmirrored cupboards will give you aplace for everything – and the addedlight creates the illusion of extraspace, too. Other hidden spaces hereinclude under the sink (add a boxed-in unit with shelves) and behind thetoilet (creating a ‘false wall’ here toconceal plumbing also provides anopportunity for clever storage andconcealed shelves).

Plan for the futureGive everything a permanent ‘home’ soit can be easily put away – and foundagain. And as you start to put thingsaway, prioritise your storage space.Place things you need frequentlywithin easy reach. Stuff you don’t needvery often (but can’t quite get rid of)can be put further away, at the back of the cupboard – sorted!

SHUTTERLY FABULOUS 15THE NO 1 PROPERTY WEBSITE FOR BRIGHTON
What inspired you to start the company Shutterly Fabulous?“We were looking for shuttersfor our own house and veryfew companies sold them. After spending time in theUSA, we saw how popularshutters were. We believed thetrend would happen in the UKand took the plunge.”
How quickly did it take off?“It was pretty amazing to geta sale in our very first week. Itdoesn’t always work that waywith advertising! Our very firstad was in Latest Homes. We got a calldays later and a sale that very firstweek. The business grew steadily fromthat point. It certainly felt reassuringthat people were looking for the product.Shutters were still an unknown productas a window covering.”
Shutterly Fabulous has been a regularadvertiser in Latest Homes for years.“Latest Homes has been a great platform. We started the business with a bag ofsamples, a £400 website and our ad inLatest Homes. After that call in the firstweek, I think we’ve advertised in nearlyevery issue since! Brighton & Hove is ourhome and our staff all live in the area. Wewant to be recognised as the ‘go to’shutter company for the city. LatestHomes is picked up by everyone and ourregular presence has been a key part ofour strategy to be known as THE shuttercompany of Brighton & Hove.”
Do you believe in strong marketing, advertising and editorial?“We had marketing experience fromprevious jobs but it’s very different whenit’s your own business. We’ve spent largesums on campaigns that haven’t workedand small amounts that had fantasticresults. We continually push our spendideas to grow the company, withoutbeing ‘uncontrolled’. You need to thinkbefore you spend and ask if the advert oreditorial is in the right place for your business and likely to bring a return.”
Does that need, to re-affirm your brand through a press presence, continue?“Yes, 100 per cent. We advertise in key publications all the time. We know thatour audience, while not buying shutters today, will have comfort through brandrecognition when they do decide to purchase shutters. This and a focus onstrong PR ensures our name is bubbling along both locally and nationally.”
The trend for shutters and blinds is strong, have you spotted new products?“We are ‘shutter mad’ but we’re always looking around, making sure we keepabreast of the latest trends. Working exclusively with Kelly Hoppen and B&Q (via our sister company, The California Shutter Co) we regularly discuss newproducts. Shutters have a long way to go. People are moving away from whitesand towards larger slat sizes. We’ve extended our range of colours to includegreys and blacks as people see the stunning effects these can create. Curtainfabrics are rarely pure white therefore why should shutters be?”
You have two brands, the fully bespoke services of Shutterly Fabulous and The California Shutter and Blind Company, how does that work?“When we started we received calls from other parts of the UK where we didn’thave coverage. Rather than turn people away, we started The California Shutter& Blind Company. People could order online, for DIY self installation. Customersmeasure their windows, order online and install themselves.
California Co is the UK’s leading online shutter retailer and the exclusivesupplier of shutters to B&Q. We work hard to continually develop the product and our website to ensure customers find the measure, install and order processhassle free. We’ve just launched a new website with B&Q, www.diy.com/shutterswhich has innovative features to make ordering easy. Of course, there arecustomers who do not want to install themselves, that’s where Shutterly comesin. We design, we measure, we install – no hassle.”
Quality is high but installation must be key to a customer’s decision?“Our whole ethos is about the package. Product quality, value for money and
outstanding customer service. The marketplace hasbecome a lot busier with many more shutter companiesto choose from. Having our own manufacturing anddirectly employed staff, who we can train and share our‘service first’ ethos, makes us stand out. Our number onesource of business is recommendation, we never takethat for granted. Two years ago we started an apprentice
scheme to train our own InstallationTechnicians. It’s working very well, ourcustomers can be safe in the knowledgethat their shutters are being installed bya trained craftsman who cares.”
Supplying and fitting a quality productmust be very satisfying, but with thatquality level do you find that customerscome to you just the once?“Shutters do last a lifetime if you lookafter them – it could be assumedcustomers are a one off visit. But peoplemove, extend and add shutters. Lastweek I got an email from one of our office team who had been out with ourInstallation team. The customer, LizGunn, said, ‘I was your first bay windowcustomer 10 years ago.’ She has movedthree times since then. We love that.”
Did you imagine that Shutterly Fabulous would grow as it has?“We knew we would work extremely hard to make the business a success butnever envisaged so much would havehappened in 10 years. The changes atour manufacturing facility are fantastic. The team we now have in the UK and theUS are superb and the investment wehave made during a recession hashelped us grow. We’re proud of where weare now. At this 10th birthday it’s madeus think, ‘Wow – that’s been quite aShutterly Fabulous 10 years – whoknows what the next 10 years will hold!’”
From a simple start in Brighton andHove you now have a nationwidebusiness. Do you see it going evenfurther afield, a global presence?“I don’t know about global but I’m surethere’ll be additions to the group in thecoming 10 years! We opened The ShutterStore in the USA in 2009 and that is going
extremely well. We have partnerships in Holland and France and we’re workingon a larger operation in the French market.”
You manufacture abroad, how does that affect prices and delivery times?“When we launched in 2002, we manufactured in Canada. In 2005 we made thedecision to partner with a Chinese manufacturer with whom we have workedexclusively ever since. We could not be cost effective if we manufactured inEurope. While price is a factor, quality is too.”
Have technological advancements changed what you do and how you do it?“There’s been continual investment to speed up and improve production. Everyproduct is custom made, a large proportion of that work being undertaken byskilled craftsmen and women. Our policy of employing our own staff issomething that we believe in. It comes with challenges but it ensures consistentlevels of service and the same customer experience.
As we expand we work hard to find the right people and bring them here formonths of training at our Brighton HQ, before we ‘let them loose’. Jon, our teammember covering the North West is a good example – he’s doing a great job, customers love the time he takes to get the job right. We know he’s doing thingsthe ‘Shutterly’ way and that is crucial as we continue to grow. Being Brighton’s‘hometeam’ shutter company, it’s important for us to work with local companies, growing together. From Sliced Creative in Shoreham who handle a lot of ourmarketing and online activity to retailers like Second Seed and One in the House,we work closely with other local businesses.”
Have you any advice about marketing and advertising for people starting up?“Think carefully about your target customer and be seen in places where theywould be. Consider each and every pound you spend very carefully and don’t getcaught up by an advertising sales rep promising the world! Start small and youcan always grow.”

garages are a sensible

Architects
A TIDY INVESTMENTW hether you are the minimalist type or find that you like to hoard
anything and everything, storage is a vital necessity in any house.Winter is fast approaching and you should probably start tucking
away all those summer clothes you rarely got a chance to wear, thedeckchairs you sat in once in that brief week in July and basically anythingthat reminds you of the long gone sunny months.
Indoors or outdoors, functional or stylish, use storage to your advantagein every room of your house. Your bathroom may benefit from a cupboardfitted with a mirror to minimise wasting valuable room. Maybe your kitchenwould look just a little smarter with a place to hang the utensils or stash yourmuch needed condiments. Make your bedroom a more calming place byreducing your clutter with the help of bedside tables, a chest of drawers or amore decorative item like a dressing table.
Simple units such as cupboards and shelves are perfect as a space savingsolution for any room. You might find you need to display your favourite thingsor simply have a place to chuck useless items that don’t belong anywhereelse. While you can buy pieces of almost any shape or size, from flatpack tomore exquisite, bespoke storage is also an option. Make full use of any nookand cranny that might look like it is shouting out to be good for something.Definitely a good idea when limited for space, find a professional who can notonly fit your specifications but advise you on the best way to choose.
Who knows, with all the space you will save, you could be fully preparedfor some early Christmas shopping as you will have plenty of places to hideeverything from the rest of the family.
