    Castel Sant'Angelo

    The Mausoleum of Hadrian,usually known as the CastelSant'Angelo (English: Castleof the Holy Angel), is atowering cylindrical building

    in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy.It was initially commissionedby the RomanEmperor Hadrian asa mausoleum for himself andhis family. The building was

    The Pantheon

    Is a building in Rome, Italy,commissioned by Marcus

    Agrippa as a temple to all thegods of Ancien Rome, andrebuilt by Emperor Hadrian inabout 126 C.E The building is

    circular with a portico of largegranite Corinthian columns(eight in the first rank and twogroups of four behind) undera pediment. Arectangular vestibule links theporch to the rotunda, which isundera cofferedconcrete dome, witha central opening (oculus) tothe sky.

    Almost two thousand years after itwas built, the Pantheon's dome isstill the world's largestunreinforced concrete dome.Theheight to the oculus and thediameter of the interior circle arethe same, 43.3 metres (142 ft).

    It is one of the best-preserved ofall Roman buildings. It has been incontinuous use throughout itshistory, and since the 7th century,the Pantheon has been used asa RomanCatholic church dedicated to "St.Mary and the Martyrs" butinformally known as "Santa Mariadella Rotonda." The square infront of the Pantheon iscalled Piazza della Rotonda.

    Capable of seating 50,000 spectators,the

    Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests

    and public spectacles such as mock sea battles,

    animal hunts, executions, re-enactments offamous battles, and dramas based on Classical

    mythology. The building ceased to be used for

    entertainment in the early medieval era. It was

    later reused for such purposes as housing,workshops, quarters for a religious order,

    a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

    Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruinedbecause of damage caused by devastating earthquakesand stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbolof Imperial Rome. It is one of Rome's mostpopular tourist attractions and still has close connections

    with the Roman Catholic Church, as each GoodFriday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross"procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.

    The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version ofthe five-cent euro coin.
