It’s Been a Year...How Not to Crack During COVID

By Laura LevinskyIt has been a year.

A year since schools suspended in-person learning, since Stay-at-Home and quarantining went in effect, restaurants closed and businesses began closing.

It has been a year of missing birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Thanksgiving, Christmas and every other holiday. Of hoarding toilet paper, sanitizer, gloves and masks. A year of Zoom calls, expanded definitions of front-line workers, limited sports events, no live entertainment.

It has been a year, and we have made it through. But we are still living during a pandemic. It is beginning to wear on people. How do we keep going and keep doing all the things we need to do to stay safe? How do we keep from cracking? We turned to local licensed marriage and family therapist, Judi Lirman, for some quick tips to help us deal with our current status.

How do we deal with going into the second year of Stay-at-Home?

We have to look at how far we have come. “The pandemic seems to have plateaued for now, the numbers are going down,” says Lirman. “We need to keep

with family members with Zoom calls. “Set a place at the table for the person who is missing so they know they aren’t forgotten.” Arrange for drive-by celebrations. Don’t not celebrate, adapt them to your situation.

In many cases, we haven’t been able to see family and friends for a

year or more. How do we keep relationships going? “Tell people you love them,” says Lirman. “Talk about things that bind you together.” Don’t let those relationships falter just because you can’t see each other for now.

One of the things that many of us have had to deal with is grief over losing someone. Having to grieve alone is tough. We are social creatures by nature. If we can’t grieve in a group at a funeral, maybe we can socially distance “in a parking lot and just talk” suggests Lirman. “Keep traditions, write a letter to the person even though you won’t mail it. Acknowledge the grief is there.”

There are many people who

in mind that we still need to get exercise. If we can’t get out, then do it inside. Keep busy. Keep in mind that you aren’t the only one going through this.”

We have, for the most part, missed a year of celebrations. “We need to keep doing what we can to celebrate in other ways,” she says. Celebrate holidays

It has been a year, and we have made it through. But we are still living during a pandemic. It is beginning to wear on people.

LAUSD Students Going Back to School

News in Brief

LA Unified and the teachers union made a deal Tuesday that will send pre-school and elementary school students back to school once the county advances to the red tier of the state’s restrictions, hopefully next week but possibly mid-April. Students will return for either morning and afternoon three-hour sessions in alternate groups. There will be limited “face to face” interaction between students and teachers. Teachers had balked at returning to the classroom until COVID vaccinations were available for all staff.

Students can continue with online classes only if they prefer. They can also opt to be on campus for a full day, but half of that would be not in a classroom, but in activities overseen by non-teachers. Regulations include COVID testing of teachers and students before they return to campus, ongoing weekly testing, required masks and physical distancing.

Louisville High School in Woodland Hills is pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Aguilar, right, has been named the new principal after a national search.

Aguilar is currently the Assistant Principal of Academics at Louisville. She will replace Mrs. Kathy Vercillo, who is retiring after 33 years at Louisville.

Dr. Aguilar came to Louisville in 2003 and taught in the English Department before being promoted in 2007 to her current position as Assistant Principal for Academics. She holds a Master of Education degree from California Lutheran University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice from Loyola Marymount University. She is a woman of faith, rooted in the charism of the Sisters of St. Louis, a strong advocate for women’s education, equity, and for student voice. She will bring a visionary and collaborative leadership style to a school poised for further growth in light of recent strategic planning.

Her educational philosophy is that: “Education is a symbiotic process and it is important for the adults in the school building to remember that students come to school with lived experience, agency, and voice.”

Dr. Aguilar stated, “I am excited to lead our school’s efforts with intentionality. It is not the absence of boys that

makes Louisville unique. Rather, it is the presence of girls and the fact that this unique environment allows us to work so intently and individually with our young women to discover their interests, build their self-confidence, and encourage them to take healthy risks. The question of how we do that is always at the fore of our discussions and decision-making so that opportunities for young women don’t happen by chance, but on purpose. I am grateful to be able to lead in a school community that has the privilege of focusing on and has a vested interest in the advancement of young women.”

Louisville High School is a private Catholic school for girls in grades nine through 12. Louisville educates young women in a vibrant, supportive learning community guided by the mission of the Sisters of St. Louis to “work toward a world healed, unified and transformed.”

Kaitlin Wiltshire of Agoura Hills, Jaxon Novack of Calabasas and Samantha Starling of Calabasas were named to the President’s List of the University of Alabama with academic records of 4.0. Isabella Boghossian of Hidden Hills, Peyton Thomas of Hidden Hills, and Heather Barring of Woodland Hills were all named to the university’s Dean’s List with academic records of 3.5 or above.

By Dan BrinI call upon my fellow

Boomers to declare a truce in America’s ongoing war against the young.

Truth be told, the current conflict is a minor skirmish compared to the one we waged against our own parents in the 1960s and early 1970s.

In our zeal to establish our own identities, we celebrated rejection of our elders’ values, tastes and norms. We rebelled against their sexual mores, their racial prejudices, their musical tastes, their clothing, and especially their support for the Cold War proxy fight in Southeast Asia, where our bodies were thrust against our will into mortal danger by policy makers we had no role in choosing (the voting age was 21 while the average age of a “grunt” in Vietnam was 19).

We even rebelled against our parents’ preferred modes of intoxication, choosing acid over alcohol, weed over whiskey.

A lot of this rebellion was justifiable and even necessary. The music our generational cohorts created was simply fantastic (I’ll still take Dylan and Hendrix over Mantovani and 101 Strings any day). The hippies’ fashions were fun reflections of a back-to-nature ethic that was a healthy precursor of today’s environmental movement. And history will smile on the heroes among us who fought for justice in the Jim Crow South and in the farm fields of California’s Central Valley.

But let’s also recognize that our youthful rebellion often took

Guest Editorial: Boomers, Let’s Give Our Young a Breakthe form of plain rudeness and inconsideration toward the folks who raised us and sacrificed so we could go to college, get high and bliss out on Emerson, Lake and Palmer LPs in our dorm rooms.

I bring this up to point out how, as grownups, some of us have turned that rudeness against our own children.

We share social media memes to suggest our superiority over entitled young folks who never experienced the joys of drinking

the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, and Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen who is summoning the world’s conscience to answer the threat to her generation posed by climate change.

The younger generations don’t deserve this. Quite the contrary, they deserve our admiration - even awe.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the FBI and the Pew Research Center, we are witnessing the rise of the most peaceful generations in the history of this country — and possibly the entire world. Youth felonies, acts of violence, alcohol use and teen pregnancies have been plunging since 1990 and are at the lowest levels on record.

At the same time, I marvel at the openness and inclusiveness on display by Millennials and Zoomers (somebody please give them a better name) as they tear down the walls of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and countless other phobias that have hobbled previous generations, including our own, holding us back from building a society that lives up to our dreams.

They’ve been through their share of hard knocks, from the Great Recession to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallouts, and they are responding with a healthy interest in labor unions and other means of working together for a better deal.

I look at them as role models, and so should you.

Let’s give them a break. Let’s call off the war.

from the water hose or riding a bike without a helmet. They’re always focused on their phones and play video games. They’re always getting stoned and plotting petty crimes.

Burglaries and thefts from vehicles? Blame the no-good kids.

Some of us yearn for the days when “spanking” or “thrashing” was acceptable behavior to teach “discipline” and get them to “respect their elders.” Never mind that we’re really talking about teaching our kids it’s OK for people to lash out violently to address their frustrations.

This disrespect has even taken the form of dishonorable attacks on the integrity of David Hogg, the brave young activist whose schoolmates were slaughtered in

Guest Editorial: Preparing for Climate Change with Fire Resistant BuildingsBy Councilman Bob Blumenfield

The Woodland Hills and Warner Center community will never forget the devastation of the Woolsey Fire, which burned portions of Malibu to the ground. While we are grateful that it didn’t jump the fire line at Topanga, it was a painful reminder for me and others to take action now to prevent devastation of large fires in our neighborhoods. Facing the reality of climate change, fires like Woolsey may become the new normal. While we may hope for the best, we need to plan for the worst.

Even before the Woolsey Fire, I was working with experts to make construction more fire-resistant. I first introduced new building standards legislation after the 2014 downtown Da Vinci arson fire, that leveled a three-story apartment building under construction. That fire cost $70 million in property damage to nearby buildings, including

the adjacent LADWP building. Luckily no lives were lost.

In 2018 Supervisor Sheila Kuehl asked me to serve on the County’s Woolsey Fire Task Force with leaders from the Los Angeles Fire Department, LA County and others, to analyze and produce an after-action report with recommendations to make our region safer from inevitable future fires. Among the conclusions of the report is that local governments need to update building codes to “harden the target” in fire prone areas. I take this recommendation seriously and do not want it to simply sit on the proverbial shelf waiting to say “I told you so” when the next tragedy occurs.

Most don’t know that some areas of LA, like Downtown, already have a higher standard for building materials in case of fires. Labeled “Fire District 1,” this rule proved to be a good model for large, dense, areas no longer

isolated to downtown. It was put in place many years ago before density had really been developed outside of downtown and Hollywood. There is no reason that dense areas in the Valley and around the City shouldn’t now be given the same level of protection as those areas - this is why I put forward a motion to expand Fire District 1 to other areas.

While this should be common sense, there are a number of

Boomers...even rebelled against our parents’ preferred modes of intoxication, choosing acid over alcohol, weed over whiskey.

on the couch in a long-lasting, stay-at-home pandemic, it might not be a big check that comes in the mail, but hey, any rebate is welcome!

The simple explanation is that the automobile stays parked in the garage so car insurance rates have fallen from 15% to 20% on a nationwide average for an entire year. And there are more things under consideration besides miles driven such as the policyholder’s

accident history, age, zip code, and of course whether or not you are employed.

Most stay-at-home men and women are working remotely. Last year’s 50% or more plunge in driving in our community brought on a few problems of its own. Driver-data information included such potential factors as driver fatigue, distracted driver charges, and the vast use of smart phones to talk and text. All of these contribute to mild and serious crashes during the past

year.Nevertheless, if you’re a

stay-at-home and a rebate check comes in the mail from the auto insurance company even a small amount is welcome. One company rewarded their customers for staying home and the trend raced through the industry. Besides, it is surely good advertising that owners of vehicles can make money without selling their car.

The average annual car insurance bill is $1,483, down 3.9%, according to trade group Insurance Information Institute. Refunds have been sent to new customers and those existing policyholders.

Change Your Attitudeat Margaritaville

Resort Palm Springs

By Kathleen SterlingJimmy Buffett sang of

“changes in attitude, changes in latitude.” And just two hours east of L.A. you get both.

Buffet’s new Margaritaville Resort in Palm Springs offers a departure both physically and psychologically from the stress of work, COVID, the city, et al.

The word of the day here is “chill” - from the 5:00 pool bar, where it’s always 5:00 somewhere - to the cabanas su r round ing the free-form pool with B u f f e t t ’ s l a i d - b a c k tunes flowing from outdoor speakers.

The resort is ripe with old palm and fruit trees. The teal balconies and umbrellas, accented with orange, echo the mid-century modern buildings. Actually, the Margaritaville Resort is the old iconic Riviera Hotel of my college days - just a block off Indian Canyon, tucked away at the entrance to Palm Springs.

Set against the gorgeous backdrop of the mountains, it exudes a Florida/California vibe, with the giant teal statue of a flip flop in the colorful lobby. The overall feel is reminiscent of old Palm Springs - the Hollywood set at the Racquet Club, movie stars, mobsters and more.

But the large rooms are thoroughly modern, with comfy king beds, smart TV’s with streaming channels and balconies with teal deck chairs facing the pool or mountains.

And the bath! There was a deep soaking tub I didn’t want to leave, along with a huge walk-in

shower and double vanity. With breakfast in bed we didn’t need to leave the room.

The restaurant offers in-room dining, and also outdoor dining and bar service. The “Come Monday Cafe” is open 7 am to 9 pm with a casual menu of salads, burgers, appetizers and some healthy options and also heartier fare such as salmon and steak frites. There is also full bar

service available at the cafe. The St. Somewhere Spa was

not open during our stay, but it’s now open offering massage, skin therapies and beauty treatments.

We spent our last day totally relaxed poolside in a private cabana.

There was Mirage Vision TV if you wanted to watch TV, but we just chilled as per the prescription of the day - watching vintage planes flying over the palms against the backdrop of the mountains, lounging and listening to cool sounds, sipping cold drinks and enjoying the glamorous 50’s vibe of the resort.

It wasn’t hard to imagine ourselves back in Palm Springs’ heyday, side by side with celebrities and stars of the era.

Instead there was a mix of singles, families and couples staying at the resort and scattered around the pool - all enjoying a break from reality and basking in the relaxed sounds and sips of Margaritaville.

Getting used to the lesser restrictions can be difficult, especially if you haven’t been vaccinated yet. Obviously, if you haven’t been vaccinated, you need to maintain restrictions on what you do and where you go. As the pandemic lessens and we are able to do more, we need to “be aware that this is a big adjustment, “ says Lirman. We need to start small, take precautions, make changes incrementally, and grow step by step.

Covid-19 is still out there and we are still in the pandemic. New variants are being discovered and tested against the current vaccines. But there is hope. At- risk people are staying home, and the vaccines are making a tremendous difference. Hopefully the prediction of enough vaccines for the entire country by May will hold true.

absolutelygrounded.comBlinded by the Blue Light? Is All the Screen Time Damaging Our Eyes?

By Mitra Nejad, MDAs an ophthalmologist, I ask

all patients about their occupation and hobbies. I need to know what they use their eyes for. Are they Uber drivers looking out at street signs or are they photographers looking through a camera lens? My question has become less important through the years, as the vast majority of the time, the answer is, “I look at a computer all day”… and this was before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the onset of the pandemic, approximately 35% of Americans are now working from home and with school closures, more than 50 million students transitioned to “distance learning.” Suffice to say, screen activity is even more prominent than ever. Last year started out as a marketing gem for refractive surgery – “20/20 in 2020” – but evolved into the year of blue-light blocking glasses. Is eye damage from all the screen use a hidden side effect of the pandemic?

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), also known as Digital Eye Strain or Visual Fatigue, affects 65% of adults with prolonged screen use. The symptoms of CVS vary from tired, sore eyes to dry, burning eyes and even blurred vision or loss of focus.

Prolonged screen use requires us to keep our eye muscles directed up-close, and they can decompensate after extensive near work, sometimes even causing double vision. The lens of the eye also has to maintain its focus on the screen, and after an extended period of time there may be a delay in its ability to relax and refocus.

The Academy of Ophthalmology has recommended the 20/20/20 rule to combat CVS: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. This helps relax our eye muscles.

Finally, staring at screens reduces our blink rate. The normal blink rate is 22 blinks per minute –this drops to only seven blinks per minute with the use of digital devices. Blinking is perhaps the most important mechanism against dry eye. In recent studies, the prevalence of dry eye disease is about 50% for adult computer users, and smartphone use is directly correlated with dry eye

in children. Dry eye can cause a spectrum of symptoms, from soreness to foreign body sensation (“eyelash in my eye”) to burning or watery eyes. Taking breaks in screen time, staying hydrated and placing a humidifier in your work space may help prevent dry eye symptoms. Preservative-free artificial tears also are a great first line of treatment.

For many, especially those over age 40, prescription glasses are necessary to be in focus at the computer. Far-sightedness and/or astigmatism that goes uncorrected can definitely lead to eye strain and prescription computer glasses can help.

Are the expensive blue-light blocking, anti-glare glasses worth it? Laboratory studies have

shown that blue light is harmful to the retina, but to date, there is no scientific data to suggest that blue light from screens increases the risk of vision loss from macular degeneration. Keep in mind the ambient light in a retail store has two times as much blue light as an iPhone and the sun has 10 times as much. Blue-light filtering glasses are advertised to help with digital eye strain but studies, including a recent randomized control trial published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, do not support these claims.

Blue light does help regulate circadian rhythm, so blocking blue light may help with sleep quality, but even more effective would be reducing screen activity in the evening or using

Fire Resistant Buildingsmyths and misconceptions regarding my plan to help save lives and property which I’d like to clear up.

What is Fire District 1? It’s a set of building codes that apply to denser areas like Downtown, Hollywood, Crenshaw and Century City. For larger developments, wood must be treated with fire retardants. More sprinklers must be installed during construction and after, and it includes other broader safety measures. My legislation expands the existing, strengthened building standards of Fire District 1 to more parts of the city, although only about 4% of the city. The focus of the expansion is on dense areas with a recent history of massive fires.

During the Woolsey Fire, my staff and I worked to help the thousands of evacuating residents coming into my district who were worrying about their families, their homes and their futures.

We assisted LAFD in every way possible and we collected and distributed a massive amount of donated food and supplies. At the time a perimeter of trucks and resources were stationed around Warner Center. One of LAFD’s worst fears was that the visible wind driven flames could start engulfing buildings around the area - and we came extremely close to evacuating large parts of my district. I vividly remember being at the command post when they were preparing for this possibility. Fortunately, the winds shifted and that outcome was narrowly averted.

Communities like Warner Center don’t yet have strengthened building codes to protect these people and buildings. Thanks to LAFD’s incredible work the damage and fatalities were greatly reduced, but Woolsey showed us how bad the worst can be. Fire District 1 standards won’t stop fires, either wild or man made, but they can slow down the devastation and offer more life-saving time for first responders. The

recommendations I’m proposing were crafted with direction and advice from LAFD, Building and Safety, the City Attorney, and Planning, as well as industry and other experts.

I’ve seen some misinformation spread like “this motion will not allow wood to be used in any construction throughout the city.” That’s not true. Wood can still be used in all areas, but in Fire District 1 it would need to be treated with fire retardants. This is critical to reduce fire risk during construction like the Da Vinci fire. And, again, the expanded fire district would only cover 4% of the city and it would not apply to single family homes.

I’ve also heard concerns about cost, especially when we need more housing now than ever. While crafting this legislation I brought up cost many times, and the experts did not have a clear answer. Fire District 1 standards have not made it too costly to build in downtown or Hollywood. Both areas have had a construction boom. Any cost associated with using treated wood or alternative materials is minimal when balanced against the long-term advantages. And, the actual cost of the building materials is a very small portion of the overall cost of any new development.

Overall, this is about emergency preparedness, fire safety and doing what we can to limit devastation as fires happen more frequently. I’ve met too many residents whose lives were turned upside down by the Woolsey Fire and other fires to ignore the threat of wildfires.

Climate change has only worsened the risk of major fires in areas that have become denser. We can’t put our heads in the sand and ignore the risk that fires pose in our West Valley community, and expanding Fire District 1 provides a practical and achievable set of standards to help new construction withstand the fires we inevitably will face in the future.

her five-bedroom, four-bath Hidden Hills home for $2 million.

She paid $1.8 million last year for the property, but the sale comes just almost a year after her son Benjamin committed suicide at the same property.

Presley has not resided in the home since the tragedy, with sources saying she was “completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated.” She moved out and is reportedly living instead in a

The sale was off-market so not a lot more information or specifics on the home are available.

C.A.R. (California Association of Realtors) unveiled a Fair Housing and Equity legislative package today to address the persistent inequity facing Communities of Color. It is called. “Californians Housing Now Intiative.”

The initiative calls upon the legislature to enact policies that address the worsening housing affordability and availability crisis with increased housing supply and fair housing reforms.

According to C.A.R. President, Dave Walsh, “The bills address the historic and ongoing inequities facing Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) that have made it harder for these communities to access and afford housing in California. He continues, “The California Association of Realtors legislative package is a critical first step in what must be an ongoing effort to eliminate discrimination and other barriers that have historically prevented so many families from realizing the economic and societal benefits that housing provides.”

There’s no doubt Southern California needs the recent rain. But stormy weather brings more than the welcome water - it can create erosion on already ravaged hillsides.

The Woolsey Fire left many areas without vegetation, ripe for soil erosion, leading to crumbling slopes, slippage and even mudslides. With the heavy rain we are experiencing this week and upcoming “April Showers,” it’s important to ensure your property is safe.

These are some danger signs to look for:

- Leaning telephone poles, trees, fences or walls. These are signs of potential landslides.

- Water flowing towards your foundation, as this can cause damage to your perimeter foundation walls over time.

- If you are in an area that was involved in recent fires, look out for any signs of hillside erosion.

If you start to notice any of the following, reach out to Alpha

The meeting will begin at 7:30 pm. Visit whho.com for the Zoom log-in.

A letter or phone call will not protect you. Your written response must be in proper legal form if you want the court to hear your case. There may be a court form that you can use for your response. You can find these court forms and more information at the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp), your county law library, or the courthouse nearest you. If you cannot pay the filing fee, ask the court clerk for a fee waiver form. If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case by default, and your wages, money, and property may be taken without further warning from the court. There are other legal requirements. You may want to call an attorney right away. If you do not know an attorney, you may want to call an attorney referral service. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may be eligible for free legal services from a nonprofit legal services program. You can locate these nonprofit groups at the California Legal Services Web site (www.lawhelpcalifornia.org), the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp), or by contacting your local court or county bar association.
