THe multi-billion rand Ingula Pumped storage scheme, like many around the world of this magnitude and complexity

has suffered delays not least the site closure ordered by the Department of Labour after last year’s tragic accident that claimed the lives of six construction workers.

However progress has been made since the incident in October last year on both under-ground and on above ground facilities.

The Ingula Pumped storage scheme is now in its seventh year of construction and had it not been for the tragic accident one of the four 333MW reversible pump turbines would be undergoing commissioning at this time. The eskom project is located between Ladysmith and Harrismith in the Little Drakensberg, and will have a generating capacity of 1332MW available during periods of peak demand and to supplement base load when necessary – for example during outages or essential mainte-nance of other generating plants.

Ingula is a peaking hydro power station comprising an upper and a lower dam or reservoir separated in elevation by 480m, an underground powerhouse located 116 storeys underground in two excavated underground caverns and housing 4 x 333MW Francis type pumps/turbines.

an underground labyrinth of interconnecting tunnels/waterways extends 6.5km and 3km of access tunnels and a number of shafts allow water to be released from the upper Bedford Dam and delivered to the turbines producing power, before being captured in the lower Bramhoek Dam.

During off-peak times – at night for exam-ple – the turbines are reversed pumping water back from Bramhoek Dam to Bedford, in readi-ness for the next peak event.

Construction senior supervisor Jacques du Plessis from consultants royal HaskoningDHV, one of the three firms of consultants that make up the design and construction super-

vision team, Braamhoek Consultants Joint Venture, explains recent progress milestones.“Underground work is proceeding apace with the concrete lining in the tailrace and headrace tunnels completed, cavity and consolidation tunnel grouting are about 75% complete and concrete slip forming at one of two 91m high surge Chambers recently commenced.”

“all civil works in the transformer hall have been completed and the machine hall and underground control room are nearing com-pletion” he explained.

“The first turbine shaft and runner were taken underground recently, two generator trans-formers have been installed and mechanical and electrical fit-out work is underway. above ground the operations and maintenance build-ing on the intake structure is nearing comple-tion as is the stop log storage facility at the outlet” said du Plessis.

The double-storey administration Building,

whose basement has direct access to the main tunnel leading to the underground power station, has also recently been completed. In addition to office space, the building accom-modates the external control centre for the power station.

also recently completed is the Visitors Centre, which comprises a small office wing, a cinema, various display halls, an auditorium and facilities wings. The surrounding area will be landscaped with indigenous plants to mini-mize the visual impact of the surface buildings.

anticipated completion and operation of the first of the four pump / turbines is expected by May 2015 with the remaining units coming on stream over the following 12 months.

Progress at Ingula Scheme

ing the richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, Dube Trade Port & aerotropolis: KZn, sasa renewable energy Project, Durban Dig out Port and Cornubia north Mixed-use Development project, all of which will create thousands of jobs and improve the quality of life for many KZn citizens.

“To date, we have supported projects which will not only enhance investment activity in KwaZulu-natal but will also produce new and unique job opportunities. Part of KwaZulu-natal’s growth strategy is to become the leading destination for domestic and foreign investment on the african continent.”

“We have been mandated by the KZn pro-vincial government to be the premier financier in this regard,” said siddiq adam, CeO of KZn Growth Fund.

The Fund will continue to finance sus-tainable projects that contribute positively to the growth, development and socio-economic upliftment of the province of KwaZulu-natal and aims to disburse a further r600m by March 2016. The Fund is also in the process of launching its equity Fund which will provide conventional equity, quasi-equity and other related products in the near future.

neDBanK Corporate Property Finance continues its sup-port of strategic development

nodes in KwaZulu-natal with the funding of a new r80 million indus-trial warehouse development at Durban’s Dube Tradeport - in close proximity to King shaka International airport - the world-class airport-cen-tred development that is fast becom-ing an innovative enabler of strategic investment in south africa.

The development spans an impressive 15 000sqm of offices, warehousing, loading and interlink, open yard and racking areas. The property has been developed by Hodari Properties (Pty) Ltd, and ten-anted by DB schenker, the world’s second largest transportation and

logistics services provider. DB schenker’s transportation and logis-tics arm is set to take occupation by December 2014.

Dube Tradeport, KwaZulu-natal’s

single biggest infrastructure project, promotes international connectivity while placing KwaZulu-natal as a prime destination in global supply chain air logistics planning.

“Facilitating the entry and asso-ciated economic invigoration of a global logistics giant into this master-planned passenger and air-freight logistics environment bodes well for further economic development and sustainable employment creation in the region,” says anand Joseph, regional executive: nedbank Corporate Property Finance in KwaZulu-natal. “We are proud to be playing an active role in realising this opportunity for our client.”

The new development adds further momentum to warehousing space at Dube Tradeport, the majority of which have been acquired or identi-fied for logistics, freight imports and exports, textiles and cold storage.

“The stimulation of transit-orientat-

ed development is providing a much-needed means for global business and trade by providing a platform for the integration of supply chains, acceleration of efficiencies and more agility in doing business on the Continent,” says Donald Borthwick, on behalf of the development com-pany, Hodari Properties (Pty) Ltd.

“Dube Tradeport is one of the most important infrastructural devel-opments in south africa, greatly enhancing our global competitive-ness. The bank’s funding of this project is consistent with our com-mitment to providing agile support to developments which contributes to growing the KZn economy.” adds Joseph

FInLaM Technical, with its head office in Pinetown, is one of the best kept secrets in the Textile

Industry. although the company has been

around for 36 years, it was the man-agement buyout a few years ago that changed the company profile for the better. This buyout which took place in 2011 was spearheaded by anthony Halliday and Grant adams and saw a large investment in new equipment to facilitate the improve-ment of the range of products and allowed the company to expand into new markets.

along with the new equipment,

Finlam has head hunted some of the most skilled personnel the local Industry has to offer. This healthy combination has resulted in sub-stantial growth into new markets in recent years. In order to compliment this drive for growth, Finlam is also investing heavily in staff training.

The company offers a large num-ber of textile laminating processes, including flame, water based, reac-tive hot melt, powder and film lami-nation coatings. These products find uses in highly technical markets such as fire fighting, filtration, foot-wear, medical, military and apparel to name a few. Finlam usually part-

ners with a company which is a leader in their respective field, which allows for the running of field trials resulting in constructive feedback to ensure continual improvement in product performance.

Besides laminating, Finlam has the most sophisticated coating equipment in the country and is rapidly becoming the leader in textile coating in the Industry. The com-pany also offers a range of coatings such as waterproof, breathable, print ready coatings right down to your basic ironing board silver coatings.

Within the Finlam Technical fold, on offer are four very strong up and coming brands, namely: riptech, a ripstop canvas which is used widely in the military, game lodges and in the camping markets. Contour, used in the stretch tent market, sun-x which is popular in the parasol and gazebo market and Prism which is designed for the digital print industry.

While most people view the south african Textile Industry as in a down-ward spiral, Finlam firmly believe the converse, as with the combination of

the DTI Capex programs, ever weak-ening rand and governments local procurement policies, the opportuni-ties are endless.

Fears of ‘fracking’ in the newcastle area are far from bearing fruit. Most compa-nies involved in this practice have yet to

decide if the northern KwaZulu-natal area is viable for gas mining sites.

‘Fracking’ or hydraulic fracturing, is the pro-cess of injecting a mixture of chemicals at high pressures into the ground, to mine gasses. according to numerous environmental sourc-es, this process has the potential to damage an already failing environment.

newcastle, Wakkerstroom, Memel, Volskrust, Ladysmith and Bergville are just some of the towns around northern KZn, which have been earmarked as possible sites for gas mining, but this does not necessarily mean these areas will be subjected to ‘frack-ing’.

a joint venture between Badimo Gas and Kinetiko has seen the formation of afro energy, which is currently in the application process for the rights to search for possible gas mining sites across the country.

energy Director and Principal scientist of synergistics environmental services, Matthew Hemming explained it was a major misconception that all gas mining entailed the process of ‘fracking’. “afro energy does not use hydraulic fracturing to access the gasses. Many of the gasses can be mined using other more environmentally friendly processes.”

afro energy uses a drilling method to allow the coal bed methane gas to escape and be examined, and this would only be car-ried out once its application to explore the area was approved. He explained newcastle residents would not feel the effects of this process if it came to pass, as the company would be drilling approximately 15 kilometres from town.

If the exploration and testing of the min-erals thereafter turns out to be viable, afro energy would use a drilling and water pres-sure drilling method to mine methane gas. The process of ‘fracking’ would only become necessary in areas were the gasses were highly compacted. according to Mr Hemming, the company would be targeting areas which were considered ‘lower pressure areas’.

sungu sungu Group, another mining corporation that has its eyes set on the area, are also investigating the possibili-ties. Geophysicist for the group, solomon Lephoto explained, “We are being allowed to do a study into the area, and see what it may hold.” He emphasised that the group did not have the exploratory permits for the area, and would not be searching or doing any tests at this time.

although the possibility of ‘fracking’ looms, it will still be some time before the community sees any veritable motion in this regard.

a perceived shortage of industrial land and lack of infrastructure are some of the local constraints to growing

manufacturing, hindering service delivery and job creation.

This emerged during the presentation of the Draft Industrial Land strategy which is expected to have a positive impact on the City’s economy and make a ‘step change’ in industrial development.

This presentation to industry role players and other stakeholders which took place at Moses Mabhida stadium, was the last in a quarterly economic Development and Growth in eThekwini (eDGe) seminar series for the 2013/2014 financial year. These economic seminars focus on challenges and opportuni-ties in the eThekwini economy.

Deputy Head for Policy, strategy, Information and research (PsIr) within the economic Development Unit, Dr ajiv Maharaj said “the proposed strategy is aimed at unlocking well located industrial land as well as putting in place infrastructure in key areas where demand for manufacturing activity exists. The industrial land strategy is currently being undertaken and significant work has been done in understanding the industrial land mar-ket in eThekwini”.

The strategy found that although there is vacant zoned industrial land within the Municipality, these are mostly single dispersed sites that are not satisfying current market demand because of poor location and lack of access. Furthermore, there is some 1,600 ha’s of land identified for industrial develop-

ment in the spatial Development Plans but this needs to be zoned and serviced to address the demand.

Presenting the strategy, Cathy Ferguson the Planning Initiative who was commissioned by the City to undertake this work said the best solution is to develop both Greenfields (land that has never had buildings on it before or where buildings have been put on the land for the first time) and Brownfields (an area of land in a town or city that has been developed and which has been identified for redevelopment).

The strategy proposed that constant inno-vation, research and development must be conducted in order to create formal employ-ment in key areas of the economy, such as the manufacturing sector.

Deputy Director General of the Department of Trade and Industry, Usanda Gqwaru, stressed that industrial land can play a big role in job creation and stated that government is in support of local manufacturing.

“The Clothing and Textile sector and the automotive industry have grown in leaps and bounds, and are now the biggest employer.” he added.

THe Department of Water and sanitation Minister,

nomvula Mokonyane has made a passionate plea and a clarion call for con-sulting engineers to part-ner with government and to perform their duty with integrity and improve the quality of life of the peo-ple for a better life for all.

“We represent a new department informed by the national Development Plan. Government is repositioning water and sanitation post 20 years of democracy, owing to service delivery challenges. We require your radical contribu-tions to deliver water and sanitation solutions to our people. You are game changers and help us to make a difference in the lives of our people by delivering services to some of our people, who have become observers of service delivery but not beneficiaries,” urged Mokonyane at the Consulting engineers south africa’s (Cesa) aon engineering excellence awards recently.

The Minister focused on the role that con-sulting engineers can play in partnering with Government to ensure the roll out of the government Infrastructure programme is effec-tively implemented.

In the category of Visionary Client of the Year Cesa gave recognition to the Department of Water and sanitation. Through its Blue and Green Drop initiatives, a vast improvement in the important areas of opera-tion and maintenance has been experienced.

There has been a substantial impact through the roll out of infrastructure through its regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (rBIG) programme.

The Blue and Green Drop initiatives incorpo-rate incentive based regulation whereby each water supply system or wastewater treatment plant is assessed on various categories that encompass all aspects of treatment. some of these include:• Compliance to final water quality standards

using accredited laboratories for testing;• Having the correct class of process control-

lers that can properly operate the works; • Preventative maintenance by qualified staff;• Having a comprehensive overview of

risks by means of a Water safety Plan or Wastewater risk abatement Plan; and an

• Incident Management Protocol and Incident registerMunicipalities are also required to enforce

bylaws; have an annual process audit con-ducted on their systems; and have an up to date asset register. Ultimately, those who obtain Blue or Green Drop Certification are seen as excellent.

The rBIG programme, initiated in 2007, has allowed for the successful roll out of large water related projects.

Great importance has been placed on the sustainability of the infrastructure through proper operation and maintenance plans. The programme also requires an additional step, to the normal design phase, called the Implementation ready study. This ensures that the infrastructure can be properly imple-mented and that all socio-economic and legal aspects have been considered.

Cesa President abe Thela (pictured) said that the organisation identifies with the nDP, especially with the national Infrastructure Plan which is meant to accelerate the growth of the economy thereby reducing inequity, unemploy-ment and poverty amongst the people of south africa.

“Consulting engineering is not only at the

forefront of infrastructure development but it is a critical and fundamental mechanism to pro-viding the quality of life to the modern society. It is therefore imperative to establish strategic partnership with Government.”

engineering industry can change SA

aFTer carefully sifting through a record amount of entries, the 2014 sanlam /Business Partners entrepreneur of the

Year judging panel have identified the 15 finalists who will advance to the final round of the competition.

The only finalist from the Kwa-Zulu natal region is Johan Kilian and Lukas Loots, Pie City franchisee, who started building their pie empire with four outlets and one factory store in 2002. They have since successfully grown the number of outlets they own in the Pinetown and richards Bay area to 14 stores and two factories.

according to Christo Botes, spokesperson for the 2014 sanlam / Business Partners entrepreneur of the Year competition, the number of entries received this year is a dra-matic increase in comparison to the 2013 and 2012 competition. “The quality of the 2014 entries also confirms that the future of the entrepreneurial community in south africa is very promising.”

Pie City, a reputable franchise brand, has been in business for almost 20 years, and was nominated for five consecutive years (between 2004 – 2008) as one of the top brands in the Ipsos Markinor/sunday Times Top Brand survey (Fast Food and restaurant category), - in three of which the brand was the only pie brand nominated. The south african franchise concept produces its own range of meat pies, fresh fruit juices and piz-zas from scratch, with all products made from fresh and local ingredients.

Prior to becoming a Pie City franchisee, Johan and Lukas worked for Transnet for 30 years. While employed by the parastatal they also owned five taverns and liquor stores located in the Durban CBD area which they managed between shifts. Their entrepre-neurial drive grew while involved with these businesses and as a result they decided to become full time entrepreneurs in 2002.

They decided to get involved with the Pie City brand after doing extensive industry

research, and once they have compared Pie City to other local fast food companies in the country they knew that the brand was the ideal franchise for them to partner with.

Johan admits that they were terrified of leav-ing the railways and a stable salary to fulfil their dream of becoming full time entrepreneurs, as they realised that only a very small number of individuals reach success as an entrepreneur in their own right.

He says that his time in the industry has made him realise that is no sure way of suc-ceeding in business, and above all business is a trial and error routine.

He says however, that the business’s recipe for success is based on hard work, enthusi-asm, patience, people skills, determination and honesty, and most importantly support from staff, family and friends.

THe southern african Institute of steel Construction (saIsC)

reports that many of the more than 60 entries into steel awards 2014 reflect how steel has become the material of choice in a growing number of social investment-type pro-jects. “This is in large part due to the long term energy-saving properties of steel as well as the savings brought about through the speed of erection and generally more efficient construction processes that steel generally offers com-pared with other commonly used materials,” says saIsC education director, spencer erling.

He adds that each year the ability of south african architects and engineers to build aes-thetic steel structures becomes increasingly apparent. “The quality of the entries improves each year and 2014 is no different,” says erling. “Given that aesthetic steel structures are now so achievable in this country and add to this the all-round efficiency properties of the material, it’s no wonder steel is being used more and more in projects where capital funds are tight and sustainability is the essence,” he says.

Three such projects have, according to erling, caught the eye of the judging panel: the Tugela river Bridge, the american International school of Johannesburg (aIsJ) aquatic Centre and the Lutheran Church Outreach Foundation’s Hillbrow Dance Hall.

The Tugela river Bridge consists of a 134m-long struc-tural steel suspension bridge. The suspension portion con-sists of two equal spans of 60m constructed over the 8m deep Tugela river at Kwajolwayo, upstream of the Tugela Ferry in the Msinga

area of rural Kwazulu natal. The concept for the bridge was developed

from the need to carry a narrow pedestrian walkway across the 134m between riverbanks and its design was controlled mainly by the fact that the higher the mass of a structure the more the material required to build it with the corresponding cost inflation. “Thus, every effort was made to keep the material content of the structure as low as possible whilst provid-ing sufficient strength and stability to meet the client requirements for a safe pedestrian river crossing,” said the project team.

THe eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-natal will be the first of what is expected to be many public sector entities that will

benefit from DynaTech’s brand new ‘smart City’ mobile application.

The ‘smart City’ app is designed to integrate a range of services offered by the municipal-ity. It is a responsive service delivery tool designed to enable municipalities to interact with their customers in real-time.

This, in turn, not only saves the customers’ from having to queue at service points, but also allows speedy resolution and communica-tion of cases.

In this way, it can serve as the ultimate cus-

tomer participation and customer relations tool for municipalities of all sizes.

This revolutionary app was launched at the Mobile Government summit recently, a national initiative facilitated to advance the use of mobile technology at national, provincial and local government level.

Mobile Government summit 2014 took place at the Hilton Hotel in Durban and aimed to bring together key figures from across all areas of the public sector, most particularly those focused on the development and delivery of e-government solutions.

CLLr Fawzia Peer eThekwini municipality chairperson lauded the new smart City app,

“We are excited to be the first municipality in south africa to adopt such innovative tech-nology. DynaTech should be very proud of this exciting ini-tiative.”

also speaking at the event, sithembiso Freeman nomvalo, CeO of sITa says, “This app pro-vides us and the country with a huge leap forward.”

asked to position the ‘smart City’ app in a broader service delivery context, DynaTech CeO ntokozo Xaba explains that the ‘smart City’ app is only one part of the company’s

broader Integrated service Management (IsM) e-government solution.

“Overall, the IsM solution covers mobil-ity, big data, the cloud and the Internet of Things – what Gartner refers to as the nexus of Forces – using very advanced software for managing service delivery issues. This means that eThekwini will be the first municipality to benefit from this technology, which I believe will transform service delivery in the public sec-tor, providing a truly 21st century approach to this vexing issue.”

It is clear that the move from out-dated, paper-based systems into e-government solu-tions needs to occur sooner, rather than later. It is equally clear that gathering together public sector thought leaders at the Mobile Government summit and launching new apps like ‘smart City’ are vital steps on the path to enabling municipalities and other government entities to not only keep up with, but get ahead of the current service delivery backlog.

THe employment equity amendment act was gazetted in January this year but has not yet

come into force – it is, however, only a matter of time until this happens and one of the big changes in the act is the extent to which employers are able to “excuse” not transforming. so says Jonathan Goldberg, CeO of Global Business solutions.

section 42, dealing with assessment of com-pliance, has been changed dramatically by the deletion of most of the factors that could, up to now, have been considered to determine whether or not an employer is complying with the act.

The assessment of compliance is also becoming stricter with the replacement of the broad concept “reasonable efforts made” with the more defined consideration of “reason-able steps taken” and the additional factor of whether steps were taken to train suitably qualified employees from designated groups. The matter of demographics is also addressed,

making provision for regulations to determine the circumstances in which either the national or regional economically active population should be considered to determine compli-ance.

The draft regulation on this has recently been withdrawn and would have required employers who employ 150 or more people to use the national demographics for the upper three levels of the workforce and employers who employ less than 150 to use the national demographics for the upper two levels of the workforce.

These amendments will make justifying not complying much harder as they place a posi-tive obligation on employers to take concrete steps towards transforming.

THe southern african Plastic Pipe Manufacturers

association (saPPMa) has announced the main sponsors and keynote speaker for this year’s Pipes VIII Conference that will take place in september at the Bytes Conference Centre in Midrand.

“The theme of this year’s event will be ‘Plastic Pipe in Infrastructure’ and we have invited papers around this theme to look at the challenges and opportuni-ties facing the industry, as well as the trends that influence the direc-tion our industry is taking on a local and global scale,” says Jan Venter, Chairman of saPPMa.

Protea Polymers, DPI Plastics, Marley Pipe systems and Fiberpipe have been confirmed as four main sponsors of this annual conference that attracts local and international experts involved in the manufacturing, installation and specification of plastic pipes, as well as the development of pipe-lines around the world.

economist and author of the bestselling book, “The Long View”, JP Landman (pictured), has been

invited as key-note speaker and will offer delegates a brief analysis of south africa’s current and expected political-economic land-scape, focusing on trends in poli-tics, economics, demography and social capital.

according to Venter, the organ-ising committee is currently in the process of finalising the line-up of speakers for this year’s confer-ence, and they are still expect-ing last minute submissions from presenters .

Topics of presentations will range from plastic pipe failures, field pressure testing and pipe fit-tings to infrastructure, modelling of operating conditions for gravity and low pressure pipelines with factory tests.

CPD points are available for professional engineers who are attending the conference, and saPPa invites all interest-ed parties to visit their website www.sappma.co.za.

LeTaBa Dewatering recently con-structed a diesel trailer unit with four six inch inlets and four six inch

discharges making it the first of its kind in south africa.

The new Varisco Js 12-400 610 dewa-tering pump, also known as ‘Zambezi,’ weighs about 800kg and can pump up to 1200 cubic meters an hour, approxi-mately 400 litres a second at a 15m head and the trailer weighs over three tons.

“This unit is perfect for customers who need to move sizable volumes of water but not a big head. Only one of these is needed thus saving space and costs,” says sarel Bekker sales Manager – rental Letaba Dewatering.

The Zambezi unit is currently rent-ed to a major mining operation, and report back indicates that the client is impressed with the performance.

“The unit is also proving to be in high demand as we have plans to rent it out for another major dewatering project soon,” says Bekker.

InTeGraTeD Pump Technology has been appointed as the exclu-sive distributor in southern africa

for Grindex, the world’s third larg-est submersible pump manufac-turer, with effect from 1 July 2014. Located in a new industrial busi-ness park close to Or Tambo International airport, Integrated Pump Technology boasts a newly built 1 200 m² warehouse and offices. The Grindex certified warehouse holds a comprehensive stock inven-tory acquired from Voith, as well as encompassing a full service, repair and 90 kW test tank facility.

IPT has an established distribu-tion network of 16 strategically located and specialised pump com-panies and key account manag-ers whose proximity to end users provide a fast, personal service. The warehouse supports the distribu-tion structure in terms of sales, repairs and rentals to Botswana, namibia, Zambia, the Democratic republic of Congo (DrC), Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Integrated Pump Technology will use its new facility to devel-op its rental model, a new devel-

opment for Grindex in this market. Integrated Pump Technology’s strat-egy furthermore is to develop broader product lines and niche, non-compet-ing premium brands. It will also grow the Grindex footprint in a range of industries, from mining to construc-tion, in keeping with its market seg-mentation internationally.

In south africa, Grindex has enjoyed a number of successful demonstration test trials in pond dewatering applica-tions in rustenburg and richards Bay.

The main innovations of the Grindex dewatering products are the capability of the sub-18 kW range to run dry. This is due to a unique air valve inte-grated into the pump which allows the impeller to pass air instead of water

past the motor in a dry run condition. The patented smart motor protec-tor ensures thermal overload, phase loss and phase rotation protection. The protector and all associated elec-trical switchgear are installed inside the pump itself, meaning there is no need for a control panel, with the added benefit of being able to run the pump without supervision.

The Grindex sludge range has all the advantages of the dewater-ing range coupled with a recessed vortex impeller and a split hydraulic with replaceable polyurethane linings. This makes the sludge units capa-ble of greater solids handling with increased abrasion resistance. The lightweight aluminium construc-tion means that these highly port-able and robust pumps are ideal for underground face dewatering. The dewatering and sludge pumps are also available in cast 316 stainless steel, with a capac-ity of handling pH values between 2 and 13, which means they are ideal for process applications. Grindex also manufactures a range of pedigree slurry pumps.

TeCHnICaL training continues to provide a valuable tool to drive down plant production costs.

a two-day course on mechani-cal seals and systems in refinery and petrochemical applications was recently led in secunda by interna-tional seals expert Dr Chris Carmody (pictured). Typifying the type of training that helps process plants reduce costs, the course showed how interruptions to plant operation can be reduced by preventive mainte-nance programmes and effective sealing, both of which improve the reliability of pumps and other rotating machines and contribute to an unin-terrupted plant operation that auto-matically enhances profitability.

The secunda course was organ-ised by 2KG Training in associa-tion with mechanical seals company aesseaL, and represents the latest in 2KG’s line of courses covering all aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering.

Dr Carmody refined the con-tent of this particular training pro-

gramme, using diagrams, illus-trations and film to maximise impact and information retention. He began with an introduction to mechanical sealing technology before addressing the misconception that these seals are an optional extra, providing insight into their proven applicability to improving productivity through rotating equipment reliability.

Dr Carmody began his career in the chemical and process industry before joining aesseaL as mechanical seals

designer and development engineer. since gaining his doctorate in science (on fluid structure interaction in bio-prosthetic heart valves), Carmody has worked on a number of prestigious projects that have included the a380 airbus and new Wembley stadium. He sits on several engineering bod-ies, including the aPI692 Compressor Dry Gas seal Committee, and has lectured all over the world.

2KG Training provides del-egates with the opportunity to learn from the best profession-als in the various fields covered. Courses are designed and presented by leading international experts, all of whom have extensive experience in business as well as their respec-tive professional fields. This focus on experience and expertise allows delegates to benefit from the best possible learning environment.

all 2KG Training courses are accredited by saIMeCHe and con-tribute to attendees’ requirements for continued professional development.

Training to improve profitability

esOr Pipelines has one of the most impressive track records in the south african pipeline industry, including sev-

eral prestigious projects that required spe-cialised expertise.

These include the recent completion of sub-saharan africa’s largest water pipeline — the BG3 pipeline, a 3,5 metre diameter steel pipeline running from the Vaal dam to the Zoekfontein control works some 8,6 km away. The pipeline has a 10 mm thick wall and is epoxy-lined inside and outside and was commissioned to increase water distribution to Johannesburg and the surrounding areas.

One of the few companies capable of lay-ing fuel and gas pipelines, esor Pipelines was awarded the replacement of the sapref fuel pipeline between Bayhead at the Port of Durban and the sapref refinery in 2006. This showcase project was one of the biggest in south africa at the time and involved plac-ing seven steel pipelines ranging in diameter from 150 mm to 350 mm, over a distance of 84 km.

earlier this year esor Pipelines embarked on a relatively large project to install 29 km of

900 mm diameter continuously welded steel pipeline, between the Command reservoir near Mandini and the Mvoti reservoir at KwaDukuza-stanger in KwaZulu-natal.

The pipeline has 6 mm and 7 mm wall thicknesses, with a polyurethane exterior coating and an epoxy internal lining.

The project was awarded by state-owned water utility, Umgeni Water, and is part of the Lower Thukela Bulk Water supply scheme that will extend the utility’s bulk water infra-structure system along the KwaZulu-natal north Coast area to meet the increasing water demands of the population in this area.

On the Western aqueduct Project, the largest water supply project in Durban’s history, esor Pipelines is installing 23 km of large bore pipe of varying diameters from 1 metre to 1,4 metres. In the same foot-print, it is also installing 14 km of varying large bore pipe with diameters from 700 mm up to 1,2 metres on Durban's northern aqueduct augmentation project, which will place urgently needed bulk water infrastruc-ture for the rapidly developing northern areas of the city.

The pipelines division was established in 2008, after the acquisition of the shearwater

group of companies, introducing new and sustainable revenue streams for the group by expanding services from sub-surface foun-dation work to include above-surface civil engineering.

The division employs more than 200 per-manent personnel with the capability to work across a full range of pipelines, including those made from steel, glass fibre reinforced polyester, concrete, PVC, ductile iron, HDPe and fibre cement. It is one of only three local operations capable of performing in situ cement mortar lining, as well as epoxy and HDPe linings.

The division also provides world class pipe, culvert and bridge-jacking expertise to the market, based on more than three decades of expertise across southern africa. Included in its “full package” offering, esor Pipelines has established the skills to construct rein-forced concrete and brick structures such as pump stations, reservoirs, chambers, telem-etric structures and other ancillary structures.

esor Pipelines operates from headquar-ters in Germiston and has successfully wid-ened its geographic reach with a presence in KwaZulu-natal, eastern Cape, north West and swaziland, as well as in Harare, Zimbabwe.

WHen a globe valve is no longer func-tioning correctly or

not at all, due to a broken linkage, leaky hydraulic actuator, non-functioning electric or pneumatic actuator, it can be easily retrofitted. Many valves can be retrofitted with new linkages and actua-tors, putting them back into service in a relatively short time. Precision is the key to a successful valve retrofit.

Mitech has retrofit solutions for almost any globe, butterfly or ball valve applica-tion and can even build customised link-ages. new internals and top works can be fitted to an original valve body. In many cases when an existing valve needs to be replaced in a plant, the valve body is still in good condition but the trim is no longer suitable.

Mitech’s trims can be designed to suit the application, and can be selected from the complete range right up to the energy dissipating disk stack.

Materials will be chosen to ensure safe operation and long life. Below 150 mm or 600# the cost of retrofitting generally will not be justifiable, but with larger sizes and high pressure rating valves, it becomes progressively more worthwhile. With the escalating cost of valves, re-engineering existing valves is becoming increasingly attractive.

C M Y CM MY CY CMY KTHe company Gebrüder Müller apparatebau GmbH & Co. KG – GeMÜ for short – based in Ingelfingen,

Baden-Württemberg, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Founded by Fritz Müller in his parents' garage, the manufac-turer of valves, measurement and control systems can now look back on an impres-sive history.

When the first process valve made of plastic was delivered by GeMÜ in 1964, nobody suspected that this one-man oper-ation would develop into a company with 1400 employees and 24 subsidiaries all over the world within the next 50 years. With Gert Müller as Managing Director, the second generation answered the call of the family company in 2011.

Thanks to its consistent innovation and an emphasis on quality and customer focus, GeMÜ has developed into the world market leader in the area of valve designs for all main and auxiliary processes of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology indus-tries.

One core area of expertise of GeMÜ is, for example, its multi-port valve blocks milled from block material. Originally made of stainless steel, these allow a plant to be designed much more compactly and, at the same time, more flexibly.

These requirements are also becoming increasingly important in plastic plant engi-neering. The company's decades of experi-ence in stainless steel block construction and manufacturing produces synergies, which are now also applied to the manu-facturing of plastic multi-port valve blocks.

This expertise makes GeMÜ the techno-logical leader in the field of complex multi-port valve blocks made of plastic. With its broad product range, GeMÜ can offer solu-tions for a wide range of customer groups.

This product variety, combined with an active customer focus, makes GeMÜ the right partner for a very wide range of appli-cations in the field of valves, measurement and control systems.

aPe Pumps has secured the order for a new concrete volute vertical turbine pump to be used as the standby unit

for cooling water recirculation at eskom’s Grootvlei power station.

The contract, valued at r4,2-million, follows aPe’s overhaul of the first of this power station’s eight cooling water recirculation pumps as part of a scheduled maintenance programme.

The orders are connected in that the two machines, new and refurbished, are identical.

all eight cooling water pumps at Grootvlei were manufactured by aPe Pumps when this power station was built in the late 1960s, and the company is tendering for similar service and repair work scheduled for the power station’s sister machines.

The pumps have run without problems for more than 40 years.

Grootvlei’s new single-stage concrete volute pump will have a flow of 6243 litres per second at a head of 18,6 metres.

Delivery is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year.

aPe’s vertical turbine pump family can be designed for any type of drive, and can be used in most industrial and agricultural applications.

Materials and assembly may be selected from a number of standard options.

Benefits of the vertical turbine design include lower cost civil works, easy installation, excellent efficiencies, no nPsH problems, space savings and low maintenance costs.

allowing them to make better decisions regard-ing when to disassemble a pipeline for manual cleaning.

The cost of an unplanned shutdown due to deposits has the potential for becoming a catastrophic event in the operation, and thus engineers and operators tend to overfeed chemicals to cleanse depositions or schedule

more physical cleanings of the pipeline than necessary.

The Flowrox Deposition Watch utilizes electrical capacitance tomography (eCT) to create real time images of the inside of the piping and uses electrical capacitance tomography to detect the differences in permittivity of the various substances found in the piping system.

In addition, the Flowrox Deposition Watch utilizes a patented algorithm that

creates a 3D image of the process fluid in the piping and generates trend data as well as show free volume inside the pipe and the growth rate of the deposition growth over time.

Ultimately, the Flowrox Deposition Watch can show its operators the deposition thick-ness, deposition profile, growth rates over time, composition, and free flow volume all of which allow engineers to understand areas where pipes are prone to these damaging deposits.

FLOWrOX, a global leader in heavy-duty industrial valve, pumps and instrumenta-tion manufacturing and service, is releas-

ing to the Oil & Gas market the Flowrox Deposition Watch—a new instrument designed to enhance the monitoring of pipelines and related flow-process equipment affected by paraffin wax and asphaltene depositions.

The Flowrox Deposition Watch is a predic-tive device, as opposed to reactive solutions offered by competitors, allowing its operators to address deposition issues well before these reach critical levels that can cause downtime or costly damage.

Crude oil contains a variety of molecular substances that challenge the Oil & Gas com-panies with the buildup of paraffin wax when it crystallizes into a solid deposition on the pipe wall—along with the accumulation of aspha-letene—which can altogether reduce the fluid flow or plug pipes and valves.

The deposition of paraffin wax and asphaltenes is a common reason for a major decrease in production and revenue in oil wells as it affects valves, pumps and pipelines, along with other pipeline components critical to the fluid control process.

The Flowrox Deposition Watch was devel-oped specifically for use in the Oil & Gas industry since this instrument will allow cus-tomers to generate real-time images of any depositions affecting a piping system—without ever having to open up the pipeline and slow down production.

“This is completely new technology which has very little competition,” said Todd Loudin, President and CeO of north american Operations for Flowrox.

“The Flowrox Deposition Watch can model mathematically deposition profiles and provide calculations on the free available pipe remain-ing.”

Using the Flowrox Deposition Watch will allow the industry to make better decisions regarding when to add chemicals and the fre-quency of addition of these expensive chemi-cals for treatment of depositions, as well as

WeIr Minerals africa supplied 130 Linatex feeder ejectors to eskom’s Camden coal-fired

power station near ermelo in Mpumalanga to replace all the facility’s existing units. This substantial order, initiated by eskom to improve the power station’s operational effi-ciencies, was supplied on a staggered basis together with associated ash valves, water valves and tie-in pipes. Weir Minerals africa also undertook the installation and commis-sioning and will provide technical support for the life of the equipment.

Winchester Maphosa, Weir Minerals africa’s product manager for comminution products and screens, says the order follows the suc-cessful trial of a set of 18 feeder ejectors con-ducted at one of the power station’s eight 200 MW units in 2013.

“The trial proved the efficiency of these units so conclusively that they were put into perma-

nent service,” he says. “During the first work-ing shift a dramatic increase in efficiency was noted and the entire unit completed dusting operations in less than half an hour compared to more than an hour with the existing units. each of the remaining power station units are now being supplied with a set of 18 feeder ejectors.”

Feeder ejectors are not new technology and have been in use since the first coal fired power stations were established in south africa. They use no power and are environmentally friendly. Feeder ejectors were developed and supplied by rJ spargo during the construction of these power stations and later supported by Linatex when the rJ spargo name changed in 1994. With the Weir Minerals acquisition of Linatex in 2010 these feeder ejectors are now supplied and supported by Weir Minerals

africa. Maphosa reports that since 2010 there has been increased demand from the power generation sector for these locally manufac-tured units.

Thermal power stations using pulverised coal fired boilers produce the major portion of their ash-make in the form of grit. This is separated from the flue gases by electro-static precipitators and collected in banks of hoppers that are integrated with the boilers and located upstream from the chimneys. Feeder ejectors are fitted at the bottom discharges of the grit hoppers to extract the collected grit and discharge it with the help of hydro-jets to sluiceways leading to the main ash sumps. The grit and water slurry produced by the feeder ejectors that gravitate to the ash sumps is finally pumped away to disposal sites.

Africa’s need drive pump sales sOUTH african pump manufac-

turer and supplier, KsB Pumps and Valves (Pty) Ltd, is making

significant inroads into african mar-kets where exploding mining activities are feeding an ever-growing demand for fluid handling solutions.

With new operations constantly being undertaken in remote locations, mining firms are seeking reliable equipment which is fully supported by reputable companies. KsB in south africa has an established presence on the continent with a local manufac-turing operation that is able to design and build pumps that are suited to africa’s harsh operating conditions.

speaking of the company’s growth throughout the continent, KsB product manager for slurry pumps, Mohamed Trabelsi, says the availability of a comprehensive range of slurry, pro-cess, and water pumps as well as valves has allowed mines to stand-ardize on their products and enjoy a single-source of equipment, spares, and service.

The company has invested r-millions to meet growing demands with the formation of a dedicated mining division, manufacturing plant

expansions and increased stock holding to meet customer require-ments. “Mining in africa is huge at the moment with vast potential for growth particularly in Central and West africa. We are selling more equipment across our borders than ever before and have grown our product range to meet all slurry and water pumping require-ments of our clients.”

“We also like to add value by shar-ing our slurry pumping knowledge with our customers.”

“We offer a comprehensive choice of training courses which teach proven

methods to maximize performance and efficiency using KsB slurry pump-ing products,” adds Mohamed.

These efforts have contributed towards a growing KsB pump popula-tion in africa. Mines such as Vale in Mozambique, Geita Gold in Tanzania, Marampa in sierra Leone and Bissa Mine in Burkina Faso, to name just a few, have shown their satisfaction with our Us designed and locally man-ufactured slurry products,” explains Mohamed.

a new mill discharge pump at Bissa goldmine in Burkina Faso is good example of how african mines are making use of world-leading technol-ogy to improve production efficiency. The energy efficient extra-heavy dis-charge MDX pump is the first new generation pump of its type on the continent and allows lower lifecycle costs as a result of reduced wear rate, its low-maintenance design, as well as improved performance and low-energy requirements.

In addition, the mine uses KsB pumps throughout the rest of the pro-cess in order to standardize on parts, training and service requirements.

MaTHer+PLaTT has delivered seven Viking gear pumps to Medupi and Kusile power sta-

tions for installation in the fuel, lubri-cation and used oil storage depots currently under construction.

The pumps are believed to be the first of their type ordered for these applications, which are generally serviced by piston pumps.

The gear pumps will be used to transfer diesel fuel and turbine lubrication oil from incoming tankers to fuel storage tanks; and to transfer used oil from collection sumps into outgoing tankers for removal and disposal by waste management companies.

Medupi will use two Viking gear pumps for lubrication oil transfer, while Kusile will use just one pump in this application.

Mather+Platt last year increased stock holdings of its Viking range of internal gear pumps, aiming to gain

market share by reducing lead time. The company now claims to have the largest ready stock of this type of product in south africa.

Positive displacement Viking internal gear pumps are widely used in mining and industrial applications across south africa, where they transfer viscous fluids up to 440 000cst.

The pumps have applications in petrochemical processing (bitumen, pitch and viscous oils), chemical processing (sodium silicate, acids, plastics, paints, resins, adhesives and mixed chemicals), pulp and paper (acids, soap, lime, kaolin and sludge), and the food industry (chocolate, butter, fillers, molasses and vegetable fats).

The internal gear pumping principle, invented by Viking Pumps co-founder Jens nielsen, uses two rotating gears which un-mesh at the suction side of the pump to create

a vacuum which pulls fluid into the pump. The spaces between the gear teeth transport the fluid on either side of a crescent to the discharge side, where the gears re-mesh to discharge the fluid.

Mather+Platt has supplied the Viking range to south african customers for more than 20 years.

nDe has recently introduced new items and a greatly improved stockholding of pipes, tubes, fit-

tings, flanges and valves.Customers are enjoying access

to a comprehensive range of pipe and fittings in sizes from 15nb to 400nb, in various wall thicknesses (sch10s, sch40s, sch80s), manu-factured to asTM a312 and asTM a403 specifications respectively, with strict ansI dimensional tolerances. nDe has also extended its range of BsP fittings, flanges and valves in response to recent demand for stain-less steel piping by the chemical and petrochemical industries.

Flanges are offered as forged or from plate in various types accord-ing to the workable pressure rat-ings required and the valves are economical one-piece or three-piece bolted /inline maintenance type ball valves.

since 1978 nDe has been actively involved in the pulp and paper industry with the supply of quality process pipe to en IsO 1127 specifications, with buttweld fittings to suit.

This offers the benefit of suitable wall thicknesses for the required working pressure of any size diam-eter process pipeline on the plant. nDe has also complemented its

stockholding by introducing seamless and welded heat exchanger, hydraulic and instrumentation tube.

This can be supplied in the more common stainless steel grades of 304L and 316L but also in duplex, high nickel alloy or heat resistant grades. Drawing on extensive staff experience and in-house technical expertise, nDe helps formulate and select the appropriate grade of stain-less steel for the particular process flow or application required by cus-tomers.

This has saved many clients unnec-essary expenditure in the long term and enabled optimum operational effi-ciency for a variety of processes and manufacturing systems.

a twin-pack coating system designed specifically to protect flanges, fasten-

ings and associated pipework against corrosion has launched on the south african market.

The new product, Belzona 3411, eliminates any possibility of corro-sion, both of the flange faces and of substrates in the surrounding pipework.

Industry experts expect that it will quickly replace the ineffec-tive paints, clamps, covers, tapes and polymer bags often used for protection against corrosion, as well as hot-melt thermoplastics which, though effective, require

specialist application equipment and hot work.

Flanges present a unique pro-tection challenge because their complex geometry means that problems such as crevice cor-rosion in the void between the two flange faces, and galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals are used, commonly occur. The effects of such corrosion can be severe. Loss of flange integrity in a chemical line, for example, can have catastrophic impact on the environment.

Manufacturers Belzona are claiming that their new system exhibits four characteristics which

No more flange or fastening corrosiontogether make it the ideal preventative product: excellent protection against corrosion, simple application, suitabil-ity to all flange sizes and shapes, and easy access for flange inspection and maintenance.

almost all other corrosion protection systems fall short of this ideal in one or more of these characteristics.

Belzona 3411 additionally delivers excellent adhesion to manually pre-pared surfaces, good fire resistance, and excellent resistance to UV and adverse weather conditions.

The new product comprises a two-pack, two-colour liquid system that protects against corrosion by provid-ing encapsulation in two layers.

The undercoat or base layer, which is applied directly to the steel sub-strate, is a corrosion-inhibitor designed to work in combination with the tough, elastic, solvent-free hybrid polymer topcoat to completely encap-sulate the flanged joint and protect it from the elements, exclude moisture

and prevent corrosion.supplied in liquid form, both coats

are applied by brush at ambient tem-perature, reacting with the atmos-phere to form a tough elastic protec-tive barrier. Different coating colours ensure that coverage is thorough and complete.

after application, flange inspec-tion and maintenance is achieved by cutting open the encapsulating coat-ing around the flange circumference between the faces and peeling it back.

Once maintenance is complete, the coating is folded back to its original position and a further layer of Belzona 3411 applied to re-seal the coating and maintain protection against cor-rosion.

“With the use of clever polymer chemistry, we have created a flange protection system strong and flexible enough to be peeled back without tearing,” commented ruckseeta Patel, Belzona’s r&D chemist.

“We have incorporated elastomers to provide flexibility, but the coating itself is based on completely new technology that excludes the use of isocyanates and toxic metal catalysts.”

“The system bonds to manually pre-pared surfaces and does not involve hot work, making it safe and easy to use,” he said.

In south africa, Belzona 3411 is available ex-stock through authorised distributor aesseaL.

DPI Plastics is a leading manu-facturer of water reticulation, drainage and pipe-fitting sys-

tems. Following the installation of the German-engineered Krauss Maffei extrusion line in mid-2013, it became the only plastic pipe manufacturer in sub-saharan africa capable of produc-ing 630 mm bore PVC pipes.

The Krauss Maffei extrusion line at the DPI Plastics factory in Johannesburg is capable of produc-ing up to 22 tons of PVC piping products per day, including; sans 791 approved underground sewer-age and drainage pipes available in standard duty and heavy duty options, and sans 966 approved uPVC and mPVC pipe with pressure ratings up to 12 bar.

DPI Plastics Product Manager, renier snyman reveals that the com-pany officially launched the 630 mm Durodrain uPVC sewer pipe range in early 2014. “The larger bore ensures that greater volumes of sewerage are conveyed in gravity sewers. This improves efficiency when compared to 500 mm sewer pipes, which was until recently the largest size available

locally.”PVC is more cost effective and

boasts a longer life expectancy, when compared to industry standard steel, concrete and high density polyethyl-ene (HDPe), which are often prone to corrosion damage caused by methane and chemicals over extended periods.

“a smooth inside wall results in a low friction coefficient, thereby ensur-ing resistance to algae growth, which is a common cause of blockage in

sewerage systems. Integral joints with rubber seals result in effective sealing and resists root ingress,” he continues.

another major advantage of the Durodrain range is the fact that it employs ‘Best Practice PVC’ methods. The pipes are manufactured in an IsO 9001 accredited factory that minimises wastage by recycling materials, which ensures a reduction in the overall carbon footprint during the production process.

What’s more, snyman adds that PVC is considerably lighter than steel or concrete. “This means that pipes can be transported more efficiently by truck, which reduces fuel consumption and improves turnaround times. The lightweight characteristics of the pipes, which are delivered in 6 m lengths, also ensures that onsite installation times are dramatically improved.”

a multi-million rand order for 560 mm Durodrain pipes was placed in May 2014 for a municipal sewerage upgrade project. “This will be the larg-est locally manufactured sewerage pipe supplied to a project.”

THe Beetham, Cumbria plant of BillerudKorsnäs has replaced a pro-gressive cavity (PC) pump with aPeX10

hose pump technology from Watson-Marlow Pumps Group on an application dosing abra-sive pigment in kraft paper manufacture.

The move has solved the problem of sta-tor and rotor wear on the PC pump that was leading to a drop in performance, downtime, and the need for regular maintenance.

at Beetham, kraft paper is produced in quantities of circa 34,000 tons a year across three shifts using 140 employees. In an application involving the dosing of pigment into paper stock, the plant was experiencing difficulty with its PC pump.

“We put the pigment into the stock prepa-ration end of the paper machine to introduce a colour shade to certain grades,” explains engineering Manager Tony Halhead. “We dose very low, precise volumes as the shade is critical. However, the abrasive nature of the pigment was causing the stators and rotors in our 1” PC pump to wear, leading to a drop in performance.”

as a result, the engineering team at Beetham would have to speed up the three-phase inverter in the control box to maintain flow rates at the required levels, causing even faster wearing. However, if the drop in performance went unnoticed, it could lead to a variation in shade and to rejected paper. On a long production run this could be very expensive.

“We were experiencing dips in performance on a regular basis so we decided to address the situation, particularly when also consider-ing the downtime and maintenance issues,” says Halhead. “Other Watson-Marlow pumps were being used on site successfully so we thought they would be a natural first port of call.”

Watson-Marlow recommended the use of an aPeX10 hose pump. aPeX pumps are engineered for maximum uptime and process continuity. Through design attributes such as heat dissipation, precision machined hose elements and optimised hose compression, aPeX pumps reduce hose element fatigue compared to other hose pumps and when a hose replacement is required, this is a

THe rare Group has doubled its warehousing space at its facility in Prospecton, Durban.

In May this year the company enlarged its stockyard to 1 300 m² in order to provide a better service to its customers in KwaZulu natal. according to rare’s national sales

Director, ashin Tasdhary, this step enabled rare to improve its stock-holding as well as expanding its stock range.

says Tasdhary: “Our warehouse in Durban was reliant on our warehouse facility in Kliprivier near Johannesburg for the bulk of its stock. Clients in KZn

can now be sure that the stock they need is readily available from the shelf at our warehouse in Durban.”

rare sells a comprehensive range of products, combining steel and plas-tic pipes, fittings, couplings and valves in a complete package to mines, the petrochemical industry, contractors and end users. The company also manufactures and supplies compo-nents according to isometric draw-ings.

Tasdhary adds: “rare’s ability to source products on a global scale, as well as our ability to manage the suc-cessful fabrication, lining and coordi-nation of products, puts us in a strong position to handle projects of any magnitude.”

mechatronic flow sensors from ifm electronic work on

the principle of spring-supported piston. The sensors are ideal for machine tools and pro-vide reliable flow control for internal drill cooling.

Various models are available with 25ℓ/min, 50l/min or 75 l/min flow rates and pressure ranges up to 200 bar. switchpoints can be continuously preset and the user has a choice of a binary or ana-logue signal output. The flow sen-sors meet IP67 protection require-ments,havea≤10ms responsetime and are vibration and shock resistant.

The piston located in the valve

seat in the housing is lifted by the flowing medium against the spring resistance. The piston position is

detected in a binary output via an inductive sensor or in

an analogue output via a sensor with a GMr cell. The spring resist-ance leads to reliable reset of the piston to its initial position with

decreasing flow. This ensures position-

quick task which can be carried out in-situ by maintenance staff. The benefit for aPeX users such as BillerudKorsnäs is reduced maintenance intervals, leading to decreased cost of ownership. Operating and inventory costs are also less, as a single hose element is all that needs to be replaced.

BillerudKorsnäs installed two aPeX10 models in February 2014, one duty and one standby. The pumps are fixed to a mobile skid and piped with valves to speed changeover. Offering a 14 rpm, 0.18kW motor suitable for VsD control, the flow rate is 25-30 litre/hr when using a green pig-ment, and 10-15 litre/hr for a blue pigment. The pumps are flooded suction (600mm head into pump via 2.5 metres of 1/2” flexi hose). Discharge is via 18 metres of

1/2” flexi hose inclusive of an 8.5 metre lift into the paper stock tank.

“since installation the aPeX10 pumps have been running reli-ably in a 24/7 operation,” says Halhead. “We are now consid-ering the replacement of other PC pumps on site with aPeX models.”

BillerudKorsnäs is a 4300 employee strong manufacturer of primary fibre-based packaging materials, working with over 1500 customers in over 100 countries.

The company has eight produc-tion facilities, seven of which are in scandinavia, and one in the UK, at Beetham.

The specialty here is the man-ufacture of sterilised packaging paper for medical applications.

WaTer infrastructure has been substantially improved for Tembisa residents on the

east rand of Gauteng, following a major upgrade that involved the replacement of a heavily corroded pipeline with r1,8-million worth of 600 mm coatedsteel pipes that fea-ture a 6 mm wall thickness bevel ended three layer polyethylene (3LPe) coating.

The pipes were supplied by Incledon. sales representative for civils robinson Patji explains that the company successfully supplied the project with more than 1,1 km of the specialised pipes over a six month period ending in early-2013, in order

to replace the existing underground concrete pipeline that was creat-ing health and safety hazards as a result of substantial leakages caused by corrosion.

“The steel pipes feature a solvent free epoxy (sigmaline) lining to pro-vide improved resistance against water. The sigmaline lining also ensures greater strength and dura-bility of the buried pipeline. What’s more, it is also cost effective without compromising on performance,” he explains.

For enhanced protection, Patji reveals that the steel pipes also feature a 3LPe coating. “The 3LPe system is applied first by coating

bare steel pipe with a primer, then applying a fusion bonded epoxy coat over the primer and lastly a finishing coat of polyethylene.”

Due to the predominantly resi-dential infrastructure of the Tembisa

water pipeline replacement pro-ject, Patji admits that a number of challenges were encountered throughout the duration of work. He says: “Gaining access to private homes and undertaking work across private properties did raise concerns with resi-dents, which ultimately resulted in some degree of delays.”

Despite these challenges, Patji notes that the project was completed on time and within

budget.“an excellent working relationship

between all parties involved in the project ensured that issues were communicated effectively, and dealt

with swiftly and promptly to ensure minimal disruptions.”

Patji indicates that Incledon con-tinues to supply different entities in the mining, civil and infrastructure industries. “The company is recog-nised for supplying robust pipes that operate in harsh environments, and the sans 719 rated pipes provided for this project are ideally suited for conveying water over an extended period of time.”

With continued investment being placed into water and sewer upgrade projects nationwide, Patji is optimis-tic of the future outlook for Incledon in this sector.

a balanced eccentric shaft and oil bath lubrication pro-vide smooth, quiet perfor-mance.

Pump housings are man-ufactured from a durable, lightweight alloy to with-stand operation in harsh conditions. replaceable wear plates protect these housings. The new motor shroud design manages air flow to reduce heat and extend motor life.

The simplex suc-o-Matic valve, which is standard on all three posi-tion/three way valves, produces a 12 psi/0,8 bar vacuum to retract any single acting spring or load return cyl-inder or tool.

Other key features include an inte-grated centre-balanced handle and low profile design for easy transport and a sight gauge that enables the

operator to efficiently monitor reser-voir oil levels.

The power control centre has raised rubber buttons that are easy to activate and water resistant sealed switches that operate on 12 VDC. Pendants that read tonnage for any high pres-sure cylinder or tool are standard on all models, except pumps with

The G3 and G5 series dump pumps are

designed for crimping, pressing or cut-ting applications. switching the motor on builds pressure, while switching the motor off dumps pressure. Manual valve pumps are suitable for gen-eral applications. Directional control is achieved by manually shifting a control valve. solenoid valve pumps are designed for production and auto-mation applications where directional control is achieved via a solenoid pendant.

BMG’s power transmission division has extended its range of heavy industrial

couplings to now include rexnord Falk steelflex couplings.

“This brand is known globally for highly efficient and reliable performance, even in arduous

applications. Falk steelflex cou-plings have also been proven to minimise downtime – an important factor in determining the total cost of ownership,” says Carlo Beukes, BMG’s power transmission prod-uct manager.

“Couplings are put under enor-

Unique “replace in place” coupling designmous pressure from high impact loads on conveyors, shredders and mixers in harsh operating environments and vibratory loads on high speed applications, like pumps or compressors, can also cause the break down of couplings.”

BMG’s new Falk steelflex grid couplings reduce the impact of high impact loads on equipment by up to 30%.

These couplings have a unique “replace in place” design which eliminates the need to remove or reposition hubs, or re-align shafts, which is required with gear couplings and many elastomer designs.

This feature significantly reduces element change out time.

These couplings also offer equipment pro-tection against shaft misalignment. The grid, which is quench and tempered, is free to rock, pivot and float within the hub teeth.

This means misalignment capacity is pro-vided, without producing detrimental bearing side loads created by conventional couplings.

When subjected to normal shock or vibrato-ry loads, the grid coupling torsionally deflects. These couplings offer enhanced vibration damping and reduce peak torque by about 30%, also reducing wear on connected equip-ment components.

These couplings act as a shock absorber for rotary motion, relying on the predictable resil-ience of the steel grid for torsional flexibility.

The Falk grid range, is available in 25 sizes with various bore, speed and torque capaci-ties.

There are 11 models available, including high speed, spacer, flywheel, brake and con-trolled torque.

Fluid power leader ups the ante

New controller range hits the market

ParKer Hannifin the global lead-er in motion and control tech-nologies, has introduced the new

serviceJunior Test Kit. available in both hydraulic and pneu-

matic versions, the practical, handy, robust, mobile testing devices are designed for testing and calibrating pressure gauges, pressure sensors, pressure switches and relief valves.

In industry generally, and in mobile hydraulics, the accuracy of pressure measurements and settings is vital. The reason for this is that incorrect values have not only a direct, negative effect on the performance of plant and machinery but also on the quality of the manufactured product.

The pneumatic variant of

serviceJunior Test Kit is for the 0.95 to 60 bar pressure range whilst the hydraulic version is for 0 to 700 bar.

Both come com-plete with a carry case, are supplied with a comprehensive set of adaptors and do not require any addi-tional power supply.

Measuring with the serviceJunior Test Kit is simple and safe.

The test kit consists of a hand-pump with which the defined proof pressure is gener-

ated. It also contains a high pre-cision serviceJunior as a refer-ence device. air, water or oil are used as the pressure medium.

The measuring device to be tested is simply connected to the hand-pump via a hose and adaptor. The required proof

pressure is then generated by the pump and can be

set exactly using the fine control valve.

The meas-ured value of

the test piece can then be compared

with the serviceJunior pressure display and adjusted if

necessary.

PneUMaX southern africa, a division of the set Point Group recently introduced the

OPTYMa-s valve banks to its array of products.

These cost effective and ‘Greener’ valve banks are manufactured from a high quality Techno-polymer, result-ing in the finished product being a reliable, space saving alternative and very competitive in the global market.

“This product boasts industry-lead-ing valve performance and advance-ments such as remarkably high flow rates from very compact designs, low power consumption, LeD indication lights and clean aesthetic designs,” says Warren Gates, regional Manager of Pneumax’s KZn operation.

reliability and robust design are proven with life ratings of over 50 mil-lion cycles. The OPTYMa – s valve manifold options include built-in one-touch fittings, pre-wired electric con-nections, I/O Modules, Fieldbus and serial interface to help simplify the

installation, maintenance and control of pneumatic actuators and air motors.

Pneumax engineers have taken into account the global industry trend of de-centralised control with the use of fieldbus technology.

This concept disassembles the tra-ditional centralised valve manifold into separate valve modules, sensor I/O modules and bus interface modules.

each set of modules is part of a “node” that is connected by the serial interface or fieldbus cable back to the PC or PLC. The advantage of this concept is that it enables machine designers the freedom to move control modules closer to actuators, cylinders, or air motors resulting in shorter tube runs, quicker operating times, easier diagnostics and installation savings of up to 40%.

This concept is particularly well-suit-ed to assembly lines, conveyors, and process control systems that employ valves at intervals but can be adapted to any industry application.

system integrators and engineers now have the free-dom to design and employ space and cost saving control system architec-ture thanks to Pneumax’s world-class range of serial interface valve banks and valve terminals. The true power of these valve systems lie in the choice, flexibility and control it gives the user. The OPTYMa–s range of valves terminals, support a wide variety of communication and connection tech-nologies including various Fieldbus protocols such as Can Open, Device net, Profibus DP and etherCaT.

“Whatever your application, we have a valve series that will accommodate your most demanding application”, concludes Gates.

BÜrKerT’s modular multi-channel multi-CeLL transmitter/controller type 8619 is a customisable measuring system with an

extended range of functionalities that can work with multiple types of sensors. With this new variant, fluid technology specialist Bürkert will extend the scope of their type 8619 which has been available only for panel installation so far. as of June this year, the company now offers a new, separate housing version which offers more flexibility in installation, for example on walls, railings or pipelines. The new variant can be supplied with a 12…36 VDC supply, as before, or alternatively with 110 / 230 VaC supply.

With multiCeLL transmitter/controller type 8619, Bürkert offers a complete and flex-ible measuring system suitable for connecting multiple sensors for the most diverse range of tasks in data logging, control and dosing. The device is perfect for numerous applications in areas as diverse as water treatment or the pro-duction of foodstuffs and pharmaceutics. The system consists of a basic device which comes with generous equipment, but whose function-al range can be freely adapted and extended, as required, with hardware boards for pH /

OrP, conductiv-ity, input + output signal boards and soft-ware modules. Bürkert’s multiCeLL type 8619 is now available not only in a version for panel instal-lation, but also with a housing, offering users more flexibility in the installation of the device, e.g. on walls, pipelines and railings.

The new housing variant is protected according to IP65 / IP67, neMa 4x. There are no external metal parts. With these features, the housing is perfectly suited not only for water treatment, F&B and pharmaceutics, but even more so for aggressive environments like for instance galvanising processes.

By using a special installation plate, the system is easily installed on walls; a special installation kit facilitates installation on pipe-lines and railings. a smart locking and support mechanism allows users to attach devices quickly to the installation plate - and remove them when required.

Terminals and connections are all accessi-ble from the front, making electrical installation easy and fast.

More flexibility for transmitter/controller

WITH the compact, lightweight design of its aV series, aventics (formerly rexroth Pneumatics) is setting new

benchmarks for pneumatic valves. The aVO5 valve system, the latest addition

to the aV family, is designed to allow a closer mounting to actuators, lowering compressed air requirements. Its specialised designs opti-mise air-channelling for increased flow volume, up to 700 l/min, in minimal space. The result is the aVO5 that provides air flow channelling performance that is the best in its class.

as with its already available “little brother” aV03, the aV05 features an up to 45% more compact size compared with similar valves on

the market. “But the modular range consists of much more than the two valves,” emphasises Wolf Gerecke, Head of Product Management at aventics. “Customers who last saw the aV03 one year ago will be surprised at all the new features the aV system offers today – we have consistently added new options.”

Compared with previous valve systems, the aV series features fast switching times, a low weight, and a small size. as with the aV03, the flow in the aV05 valve system was also optimised. “The valves can be mounted closer to where compressed air is required,” explains Gerecke. The decentralised advanced electronic system (aes) fieldbus connection

also does its part. The aes processes ana-logue as well as digital signals and allows for fast assembly and flexible use.

“We called all known principles of design, materials, and assembly into question during the development of this aV series,” Gerecke reports. Firstly, the valve components in the housing are arranged diagonally, saving up to 45% more space and secondly shorter dis-

tances between the actuator and valve allow for compressed air savings of up to 20%.

“These unique designs clearly show the innovative leap our aV family takes in pneu-matics,” says Gerecke. The concept required much more work and expertise than simply the idea of using the maximum length in a specified geometry. For example, high-tech polymers were implemented and a new injec-tion-moulding process was developed specifi-

cally to be able to realise the design principle. These new materials make the product up to 40% lighter.

The aV series and all aventics products are available in south africa exclusively though Tectra automation, a member of the Hytec Group of Companies.

LeITenBerGer GmbH, leading manu-facturer of pneumatic and hydraulic hand pumps – represented in southern

africa by Instrotech – is offering portable pneumatic and hydraulic pressure kits for on-site calibration.

To calibrate a pressure reading instrument (e.g. pressure gauge, trans-mitter, switch) mainly two components are necessary: a pressure source (with fine adjust-ment facility) and a reference instru-ment (3 to 4 times more accurate than the test item). The test item and the reference instrument are pressurised with the same pres-sure and by comparing the two values, the test item and reference instrument, the accuracy of the test item can be defined or checked.

The Lr-Cal Pressure Calibration Kit com-prises:• LPP40Pressuretestpump(pneumatic)

a hail storm can wreak havoc on gar-dens, car bodywork, windows and solar panels. With help from Festo, the

south african Bureau of standards (saBs), whose testing activities include a wide range of testing, calibration and inspection, have auto-mated their Hail Gun for testing solar panels against hail damage.

Over the past couple of years, Gauteng has been lashed by heavy hail storms raising inter-est in products that are resilient to nature’s bullets. Festo was asked to assist the saBs with a solution to automate the movement on their Hail Gun. This gun is designed to pick up an ice ball and shoot it at a solar panel, to establish it’s endurance to the impact.

“Our solution included both pneumatic and electric drives and a customised control panel for the system,” explains Johannes ngwenya, Festo sales engineer.

a pneumatic vacuum generator was used to suck an ice ball through a barrel canister. Once the ice ball was in place, the L-port valve is activated to switch the vacuum off and open positive air thus shooting the ice ball at the solar panel. “We required movement in 1mm increments” says Herman strauss of the

saBs, “electric drives have proven to be best suited to this application as they provide the fine motion control we needed.”

The Hail Gun needed to be attached onto X, Y, Z positional drives so that the ice balls can be directed at any point on the solar panel. “The mass of the Hail Gun and the panel dimensions of 2m x 2m x 1.5m helped us to size the electric drives and the required stroke,” says ngwenya.

It was decided to use the eLGa toothed belt drive which is an ideal axis for linear gantries and cantilever axes. additionally, this electric drive delivers speeds of up to 10 m/s, acceler-ation of up to 50 m/s² and a repetition accuracy of up to ±0.08 mm.

Control to the system was provided by the compact CMMO-sT motor controller which serves as a closed-loop and open-loop posi-tion controllers. It offers quick easy parameteri-sation through either the Festo Configuration Tool (FCT), as was done with this application, or via an ethernet interface with integrated web server.

aT the helm of Transnet national Ports authority’s 4200 cubic metre dredger Isandlwana

which, with a price tag of around r1 billion, is the authority’s most expensive asset, is south africa’s first black female Dredge Master Londiwe ngcobo.

ngcobo is one of many TnPa women in mission critical positions who daily prove their mettle, along-side their male counterparts, in south africa’s demanding maritime indus-try, tackling the high seas and bad weather day and night to ensure the country’s ports run smoothly.

Women fill 35% of mission critical jobs, within the country’s Port system, ranging, from harbour masters, deputy harbour masters, to chief marine engi-neers and marine engineers, marine pilots, dredge masters, coxswains, tug masters, aviation technician and heli-copter pilots.

Government’s transformation, skills development and employment agen-das embodied in the new Growth Path and national Growth Plan, and TnPa’s own transformation agenda, are the driving force in the changing face of the country’s ports.

“Training people for our marine divi-sion among others, is an integral part of the TnPa’s human capital pipeline. Moreover, we are developing women with mission critical skills that are in demand and internationally market-able,” said Tau Morwe Chief executive TnPa.

also assisting to transform the face of the authority is the drive to ensure that the intake of trainees and bursary recipients for marine studies, which will lead to mission critical positions, are female.

Dredging is critical to ensuring that the country’s ports remain open and safe for shipping. nompumelelo Chamane, who is one of seven female cadets with TnPa’s Dredging services, is the first to qualify as a Marine engineer. she is currently on board the Crane. Of the remain-ing cadets, one is studying and five are completing their sea time after which they will take their final steps to attain their marine tickets, and bolster Dredging services female engineering crew contingent.

The job of the harbour master is one of the most important jobs in any port authority around the world. The harbour master, in the port to which they are appointed, is the final author-ity over all matters relating to the movement of vessels within port limits including pilotage, navigation, naviga-tional aids, dredging.

TnPa is proud to have women at the helm of east London and Mossel Bay ports and to be among the few countries world-wide to have female harbour masters.

Marine pilots guide ships, tankers and oil rigs in and out of ports without incidents. Working with huge vessels in a confined space pilots manoeuver ships between concrete structures,

taking adverse weather conditions into account. In navigating the ship into the port they have to know the terrain and when to stop the engines and when to start the turn in order to avoid crash-ing into the berth or running the ship aground.

Helicopters are an essential tool for the marine services used at the Ports of Durban and richards Bay to trans-port marine pilots to and from ships. Of the helicopter pilot cadets that graduated earlier this year eight were female. They are Marce Greyson, nicolene naidoo, nontsikelelo nkombisa, Bongani Mkansi, Khensani Hlungwani, and Zuziwe Mkhabela.

aviation engineers are a key support function for the helicopters and of the eight trainee aviation engineers four are female. They are Phumlile Zondo, Joy sekwati and samukelisiwe Faith Mncadi. They are midway through a three-year aviation engineering diplo-ma and are being trained by Denel at the Denel Technical academy on behalf of TnPa.

“For women, like Dredge Master Londiwe ngcobo (pictured), who are being trained in these highly sought after mission critical skills, the sky is the limit,” said Morwe.

TNPA chart a new course for women a quick and effective solu-

tion for the lubrication of wire ropes in indus-

trial applications is available in the local market through Filter Focus - a leading wear control expert specialising in the development, design and manufacture of offline filtration systems.

The Viper Wire rope Lubricator MKII is suitable for use on wire rope with diameters ranging from 8 mm to 67 mm, and can oper-ate at speeds of up to 2 000 m per hour. Filter Focus COO Craig FitzGerald observes that the Viper Lubricator eliminates the need for companies to carry out manual lubrication applications, which can be time-consuming and labour-intensive.

“The Viper Wire rope lubricator achieves more thorough lubrica-tion of the wire rope as the pres-sure forces lubricant through the core of the rope. It offers the user high-pressure, one-pass lubrica-tion of the wire rope and reduces lubrication consumption by up to 90%. as the lubricant is forced into the centre of the rope under pressure, each individual strand is lubricated thereby eliminating fret-ting corrosion” he explains.

The Viper Wire prevents corro-sion of the wire rope, and displac-es moisture from the core of the rope, which increases operational lifespan. It also provides time and cost savings, as it only requires lubrication every seven months as opposed to every two months with manual lubrication.

“What’s more, this automated process offers the added benefit of improved worker safety during the lubrication process, as work-ers are not exposed to the ropes.”

The Viper Wire rope lubricator is comprised of numerous parts that work together in order to get the wire rope to its optimum per-formance level. The rope cleaner (VrC) is mounted onto the rope first, and is responsible for remov-ing contaminants on the rope. Once the VrC is connected, the Viper Collar is connected.”

The Viper Collar clamps easily around the rope, the pump and airline are then connected, and one end of the lubricant hose is connected to the grease pump, with the other connected to the collar.

The Viper pump, which is capa-ble of pumping in excess of 4 kg of lubricant onto the wire rope per hour. “The Viper Wire rope lubri-cator can therefore be used for a variety of industrial and shipping applications.

TOYOTa Forklift’s 8-series has been serv-ing the market with counter balanced trucks ranging from 1 ton to 3.5 ton set-

ting industry standards for many years. 2014 saw Toyota Forklift extend the series to bigger trucks of up to 8 tons making Toyota Forklift the first choice for any application.

Leric smith, Toyota Forklift’s Product specialist, notes that there has been a consider-able improvement in tech-nology from the same size machines that were avail-able in the Toyota Forklift 5-series and 7-series. “Firstly, the bigger machines are a lot more compact and environmentally friendly,” Leric elaborates. “The trucks which come with high-reliability Toyota engine are Tier 3 rated under the american Federal emissions standards and also comply with the current european emissions standards.”

“ergonomically, the machines are a lot friend-lier for the drivers as they offer more comfort with easier entry and exit. They are quieter, have less vibration and better manoeuvrabil-ity.”

The new additions to the range come with Toyota Forklift’s safety technology, system of

active stability (sas). sas constantly moni-tors forklift operations and automatically takes

corrective action when it senses factors that could lead to truck or load instability. “When used in combi-nation with Toyota I-site, we can manage driver behaviour, correct the behaviour and enforce cor-

rect driving habits,” explains Leric. “I-site is an advanced fleet management business solution that helps com-panies optimise their fleet size, control driver access and monitor driver and truck performance in order

to deliver benefits in terms of cost control, safety, produc-

tivity and efficiency,” he adds.an essential factor is also the cost benefit

that comes with this new range of trucks. “The biggest cost benefit is fuel saving. On the 8FG machines there is a 20 % fuel saving on gas and a 10% fuel saving on diesel on the 8FD machines,” advises Leric.

The counter balanced trucks are applicable for use in any type of industry however with the bigger machines, Toyota Forklift can now serve industries such as paper and pulp, port warehouses, logistics companies as well as bottling and brewery companies.

DUrBan-BaseD freight-handling specialist the southway Group has acquired its fourth Hyster reach

stacker and seventh Hyster empty con-tainer handler from Barloworld Handling in response to increased demand for its services.

established nine years ago, southway has grown exponentially on the back of high service levels. serving an array of coastal and inland clients, the group today operates full and empty container depots with a combined capacity of 5 000 TeUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) as well as a warehouse for palletised product and break bulk cargo at Isipingo rail, Durban. To further meet client requirements, a con-tainer depot with a capacity of some 3 500 TeUs was opened in Kazerne, Johannesburg, last year.

Moving more than 5 000 containers per month at its Durban depots alone, uptime of materials handling equipment is critical to meeting southways’ commitment to ser-vice excellence and growing its business, says southway Group managing director nan Govender.

Value is added through a long-term main-tenance contract with Barloworld Handling, which places a specialist big lift truck techni-

cian on hand to ensure southway’s big trucks are used to their fullest capacity, giving the company a good return on its investment.

“We know we can rely on outstanding parts availability and a technician response time of two to three hours,” says Govender. “When uptime is of the essence, backup becomes a real differentiator, and Barloworld Handling more than delivers. Based on our machines’ performance and reliability, and the excellent service we receive, we have long since stand-ardised on Hyster.”

The two latest Hyster acquisitions are both fitted with 6m to 12m telescopic spreaders. The reach stacker, model rs45-31CH, is used

Southway on the move to stack containers in three rows, stacking loads up to 43 ton five high in the first row, up to 31 ton four high in the second row and up to 16 ton three high in the third row. The empty container handler, an H12.00XM-12eC, stacks containers four high.

Performance-enhancing features and ben-efits of Hyster big trucks include fuel-saving Cummins engines; power-on-demand and load-sensing hydraulics; a hydraulically oper-ated sliding Vista Cab; exceptional manoeu-

vrability and handling speeds with no loss of power at full capacity for demanding loads; and overall ease of operation. The resale value of Hyster big trucks, ensures owners of further returns on their investment, says andrew Lotter, Barloworld Handling GM in KwaZulu-natal.

In addition to its Hyster container handling units, southway also operates several smaller Hyster units at its facilities.

BLT sa’s range of samson bulk materials handling equipment includes travelling hoppers,

which provide efficient handling, flex-ibility and environmental protection, in the discharge of dry bulk materials.

“samson eco-hoppers, which are suitable for discharge by ship-mount-ed or shore-side grab cranes, are designed to suit the characteristics and flow properties of virtually any bulk material, including coal, iron ore, gypsum, copper concentrates, soda ash and wood chips,” says Keith Dowie, project development manager for BLT sa’s saMsOn bulk materials handling equipment. “These robust grab unloading hop-pers offer handling rates to 5 000 tonnes per hour, depending on grab crane performance.”

eco-hoppers, which are manufac-tured to withstand tough conditions at ports, also have an effective dust control system that minimises the escape of dust during the grab dis-charge cycle. environmental pollu-tion caused by fugitive dust, is a major problem in dry bulk handling.

These hoppers have an upper and lower section, separated by a dust retention feature, the ‘Flex-Flap’. This divider, which comprises a series of pressed steel sections and vertical rubber flaps, opens to allow the free flow of material into the hopper and closes to prevent the flow of air out of the hopper.

When bulk material is released by the grab, it falls through the Flex-Flap and accumulates in the inner hopper below. The hopper system automati-cally closes as a result of the newly

created pressure differential between the hopper and the atmosphere, form-ing a seal to contain the dust contami-nated air. Integral reverse jet filters are positioned around the hopper inlet to extract and clean the dust laden air. Collected dust is then re-cycled into the mainstream of material.

The Flex-Flap feature reduces the volume of exhausted air necessary to control fugitive dust and requires the use of small, compact filters rather than a large de-dusting system.

The standard samson eco-hopper series includes circular hoppers, which are designed to accommodate grab

capacities between 1 and 37 m³. each hopper size has a correspond-ing high or low level framework, depending on the chosen discharge option.

Custom designed hopper solu-tions that suit specific application requirements are also available.

Discharge of materials from the eco-hopper may be direct to a belt conveyor for a fixed installation. In this case, the bulk material is reclaimed by a gravity discharge unit which feeds the material onto the conveyor at the required output rate.

By using a dust controlled load-ing spout, the hopper can discharge direct to tipping trucks, where mate-rial is to be moved directly off the port to a remote location. For handling difficult materials, like

woodchips, one or multiple samson feeder units can be integrated with the eco-hopper, to provide controlled rate feeding of virtually any material.

eco-hoppers can be rail mounted or bolted to suitable concrete foun-dations. For applications requiring a higher level of manoeuvrability, hop-pers can be supported on solid rubber filled pneumatic tyres. The combina-tion of fixed and steering axles pro-vides the option of power travel, both parallel and at right angles to the quay.

aT the "World of Material Handling" customer event in Mainz, Germany, Linde

Material Handling (MH) present-ed two new logistic train solu-tions. The Linde Logistic Train and Linde Factory Train are both designed for the modern, cycle-based flow of materials that takes place in production facilities, with both systems offering the highest level of flexibility and conveni-ence.

This synchronised form of pro-duction supply was originally pio-neered by the automotive indus-try. However, the space-saving logistic trains from Linde are increasingly being used in other fields of industry too. The trains comprise a compact tow tractor capable of pulling three, five or six

tons, together with one or more load trailers and/or modules.

The two trailer train solutions from Linde represent complete-ly new designs, with both the Logistic Train and the Factory Train boasting a high level of directional stability and manoeu-vrability. Both trains come with-out a centre axle, making them extremely flexible in terms of the containers to be carried.

The Linde Logistic Train is mainly intended for use in halls with relatively level floors. each individual wheel on the load trail-er, which is modular in design, is spring-loaded to compensate for uneven road surfaces, while thick treads on the wheels absorb bumps. These two features together ensure a stable ride that

is gentle on the load. However, due to the wheel diameter of 200 or 250 mm, the Linde Logistic Train is fairly limited when it comes to outdoor use. With the introduction of the new series, the range of trailers has also grown.

Moveable forks make the task of loading the goods carriers easier for the operator. The train can be steered either mechanically or electrically via all four wheels, or mechani-cally via two wheels. The trailers can also be equipped with two castor wheels and two fixed wheels. Trailers that are not equipped with a lifting system generally feature electri-cal dolly interlocking.

The second trailer train system, the Linde Factory Train, is modular in design, featuring standardised basic modules. The train in its entirety is made up of an initial module, one or more main modules and an end module. With this concept, various goods carriers such as C-frame, e-frame, Qs-frame or bridge-frame models are interlocked without play in between two standardised modules. as the carriers can be replaced at any time, the operator retains full flexibility in the face of changing requirements.

aIr Products south africa recently designed and implemented a new way of mixing gases using thermo-compressor

technology, and as part of ongoing trials has successfully commissioned the first station of its kind at arcelorMittal’s newcastle operations.

Ian Gorin, Process engineering Manager at air Products south africa, explains: “The problem was that the mill required a higher pressure gas than what was available from the blast furnace gas. Instead of the tradi-tional method of using a booster compressor powered by electricity, we designed a gas thermo-compressor. This system controls and modulates the gas mix ratio to give exact calo-rific value as required by the customer.

“To compress the blast furnace gas by 25 kPa (according to the design flow rate) would have required a blower consuming 145 kW of power,” Gorin continues. “The major benefit of the gas thermo-compressor is that it uti-lises zero electrical energy which obviously translates into significant cost savings for the customer.”

The complete gas thermo-compressor sta-tion was designed by the air Products south africa projects team at the company’s main

facility in Vanderbijlpark. The team also jointly managed the installation with air Products’ newcastle operations team.

“The need for the station arose from an ener-gy deficit at arcelorMittal,” says Gorin. “The steel mill was importing a high calorific value methane-rich gas, while the blast furnace was flaring gas. The gas is combustible and usable if mixed in the correct proportion with methane-rich gas, to create a mixed gas with the correct calorific value.”

The system works on the principle of using the higher pressure from the methane-rich gas as the motive gas to induce a flow of low pressure blast furnace gas – thereby creating a mixed gas at an intermediate pressure which is higher than the blast furnace gas.

By modulating the various pressures, the thermo-compressor produces the mixed gas at a set flow rate, and in the correct ratios of the gases as required by the steel mill.

according to Gorin, the concept would work well where there are integrated mills, such as a blast furnace which produces low calorific value gas, as well as a mill using higher calo-rific value gas.

“The concept of mixing gases using a thermo-compressor, and not an electrically-powered booster fan, is exclusive to air Products. We are very proud of this ground-breaking innova-tion,” says rob richardson, General Manager: On-sites at air Products south africa.

“We are also proud of the fact that our first gas thermo-compressor station was commis-

sioned on time, on budget and according to customer requirements.”

While this concept is new to the south african market, it will also be rolled out interna-tionally, and has important implications in terms of energy efficiency and cost-savings.

NEWCASTLE & SURROUNDS

DCD Venco - a specialist in the fabrica-tion, manufacture and refurbishment of medium to heavy duty mechanical

components - continues to sustain impres-sive market share in south africa, despite challenging economic conditions.

DCD Venco is a division of international manufacturing and engineering company DCD. The company operates from a 25 ha facility complete with a 22 000m² roofed factory in newcastle, KwaZulu-natal, where it boasts the capacity to fabricate and manu-facture components of up to 50 tons for OeM equipment that ranges from dump trucks and bulldozers, to wagon tipplers and mills.

General manager Willem Mare believes that DCD Venco continues to be recognised as a preferred supplier of components to internationally recognised clients that oper-ate in the mining, power generation, steel processing and railway industries - due to the fact that the company is able to maintain the highest standards of quality through its commitment to internal skills development.

“DCD Venco boasts numerous certifi-cations, including; IsO 9001, IsO 3834, OsHas 18001 and IsO 14001, which exceed local industry benchmarks and pro-vide clients with an excellent return-on-investment. These certifications have been achieved thanks to a strong work ethic among our 380 strong workforce, who are regularly encouraged to enhance their skills internally,” he explains.

This is clearly evident in the fact that DCD Venco dedicates five percent of its salary and wage budget to internal skills development. Mare adds: “Investing heavily in skills devel-opment not only improves productivity and customer satisfaction, it also boosts staff morale and creates the prospect of a better future for every single employee at DCD Venco.”

Mare points out that DCD Venco works closely with two organisations to train its staff in all the relevant functions of the busi-ness, ranging from welding and boiler-mak-ing to fitting and electrical skills. “In order to ensure that the highest standards of quality and competence are never compromised, all DCD Venco employees must complete a three-year programme before qualifying.”

DCD Venco has adopted a proactive approach towards technological evolution which, according to Mare, has played an important role in ensuring that the company remains one step ahead of the competition.

finger. This is inspired by the human hand with its opposable thumb, which can be rotated by 130 degrees in rela-tion to the other fingers. Depending on requirements, between two and six finger elements can be fitted to the MultiChoiceGripper. Besides the Fin ray fingers, two other types of fingers can be attached.

The MultiChoiceGripper is not only variable in terms of the direction of grip as the fingers themselves can adapt to a wide variety of shapes. It can therefore grip differently shaped and also very sensitive objects without additional sensor or control technol-ogy. as from this year, they have been made of food-compliant polyurethane, which means they can be used for the food industry.

Inspiration for the wavehan-dling pneumatics conveyor system was provided by waves in nature. The movement of the wind over the

smooth surface of the water pro-duces small ripples, which grow as the wind pushes against them. However, what is being moved by the waves is energy, not water. The water molecules within a wave move up and down in a circular motion, but remain in roughly the same place, yet the energy produced causes the wave to roll over the surface of the

sea. The conveyor system behaves in a similar way: while each individual bellows advances and retracts in the same spot, a wave moves over the surface of the conveyor.

The WaveHandling pneumatic conveyor system consists of numer-ous bellows modules that deform the surface creating a wave motion that transports the objects in a targeted manner. The individual modules are self-configuring which means that the system can be started up quickly and without programming, no matter what the layout is. an additional handling unit is not required for this process due to the integration of a sorting func-tion within the system.

a potential application of the plat-form is in the food industry, for auto-matically transporting delicate items like fruit and vegetables and sorting them for the next process step.

In line with modern flooring trends and keeping on the cutting edge of flooring technology, Technical

Finishes (Pty)Ltd has proven success with their new Polyscreed Quartz col-oured quartz screed system .

a new trend in commercial and industrial flooring where combined aesthetics and functionality is required, a flooring system that is attractive yet extremely durable and easy to clean becomes the minimum specification. Traditional self -levelling epoxies do not have the important combination of appeal, durability and hard wearing scratch resistance. They look fantastic on hand over but soon scratch and deteriorate in high traffic areas.

Polyscreed Quartz coloured quartz screed system meets all the criteria for environments such as Food and Beverage retail outlets, department stores, trading stores, commercial butcheries etc. The added benefit of this type of system is that tailor made colours can be created to meet even the intimate needs of person-al and corporate colours. With this

an organisations marketing image is consistently projected throughout the organisation`s work environment.

Technical Finishes` coloured quartz system is a hard wearing decorative

resin screed system comprising of coloured quartz granules encapsu-lated in a non-yellowing binder result-ing in a system with compressive strength three times that of concrete.

Staying ahead of the pack It is a power trowelled system and thereby provides uniform compac-tion and thus far better consistency throughout the working surface. Many competitor resin screeds are “hand trowelled” which leads to soft spots , trowel marks and inconsist-encies in thickness, says MD Ian Harrison. Technical Finishes has designed a system unparalleled and unmatched by their competi-tors using the latest in urethane / epoxy technology.

Being seamless, it offers an “easy to clean” hygienic surface ideal for environments where cleanliness and a strict hygiene regime coupled with durability is a prime require-ment. “ There is always a need to keep surfaces clean and bacteria free and this system meets with this requirement perfectly” says Ian.

Food processing environments often require HaCCP compliance

and Polyscreed Quartz meets all the requirements required by HaCCP .

recent projects completed include “Food Lovers” springfield Park, Pinetown and a number of spar retail stores.

In addition to this PUMaDUr polyurethane screeds are available which meet HaCCP requirements for food and beverage “back of house” process areas. It contains an anti microbial additive to assist in keeping floors hygienic. The sys-tem is impact resistant and steam cleanable unlike normal epoxy coatings. also ideal for fridge and freezer store rooms.

Technical Finishes has a wide range of specialist flooring systems to meet all types of flooring environ-ments.

Gea Filtration r e c e n t l y received an

order for a revamp of an old evapora-tor and for a new direct-steam steri-lization unit at a German gelatin manufacturer.

after the com-missioning phase of the evaporation plant, the cus-tomer will replace the existing ion-exchanger and install an ultrafiltra-tion system with diafiltration unit for desalination of the gelatin solution. Moreover, process water streams occurring in several production steps in the factory, will be treated and recovered in a reverse osmosis sys-tem.

another order was placed by a company in Turkey. a complete Gea Wiegand gelatin concentration line is involved, consist-ing of ultrafiltration/evaporation and sterilization. This plant is controlled via a PCs7-system.

Gelatine and glue are high-qual-ity natural products. The technical range of applications of gelatine in the food, nutriceutical, pharmaceutical, and photo industries is extraordinarily wide. Concentrated glue broths are mainly used in the adhesives industry.

Gelatine is extracted from leath-er waste, veal, bovine, and porcine hides, bones, and fish skins. The raw

materials are chemically treated in the extraction. The cross-connections between the chain molecules in the collagen protein of the raw materials are split using acids or caustic solu-tions.

The high-molecular collagen frag-ments are then extracted with warm water as glue or gelatine. Depending on the treatment process, this takes place in several steps at different pH values and temperatures.

In the further process, the extrac-tions are clarified, desalinated, con-centrated, if necessary, sterilized, dried and packed.

Gea Wiegand delivers membrane filtration plants (Gea Filtration) and evaporation plants for the process steps of clarification, desalination, concentration, and sterilization.

sOUTH africa has outstanding saBs safety regulations in place when it comes to the handling of electrical and

electronic equipment by workers. In addi-tion, an expansive declaration by OHasa (Occupational Health and safety act) covers the prevention of accidents pertaining to elec-trical and electronic hazards in industry. Why then, with all this legislation in place, do so many accidents still occur?

according to Victor Marques, Country General Manager, Omron electronics south africa, the problem lies with the effective and resolute enforcements of these standards and acts. “no matter how safe the machin-ery is that workers operate or handle, or how stringent the policies are, it is all futile if these are not properly policed and if no one is held accountable when things go wrong. Only when stringent penalties are issued to com-panies and business leaders, will the powers that be, sit up and take note. In fact, in cer-tain cases overseas, criminal charges have been meted out against senior management in companies.”

“regarding enforcement of policies, south africa lags behind the Western world to a similar degree to that of other emerging mar-kets,” comments Marques.

Omron electronics, south africa is part of the Omron Corporation that is headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. The company specialises in providing high quality industrial electronic equipment that is safe to use. Omron prod-uct helps protect and prevent accidents in industry from causing injury or even death at the work place. “accidents are expensive, not only in lost working days, medical bills and higher insur-ance premiums, but also in other costs that are not that easy to quantify such as disrupt-ed production, accident investigations and training of new personnel to replace those injured or deceased in industrial accidents. Therefore, by creating a safe industrial envi-ronment on all levels is a wise business investment.”

For many years, Omron has gained exten-sive experience by working closely with the world’s leading machine manufacturers and with governing bodies that define today’s

(conventional decanter) types of cen-trifuges, available for a multitude of applications.

apart from offering these two con-ventional types of centrifuges, Multotec can also offer the option of a collection of hybrid machines, which will include both sedimentation and filtration pro-cess steps.

siebtechnik centrifuges are manu-factured under licence, or imported from Germany, depending on the type of machine required. Du Plessis points out that the primary differentiator with siebtechnik centrifuges is that each is custom engineered for the application at hand.

“Understanding customer needs and providing solution customisa-tion to meet the specific operational

parameters is a driving force for Multotec. In many instances, sup-pliers have a limited range, and they unfor-tunately force the avail-able centrifuges to fit the application, instead of providing a fit for application purpose-made solution. Having access to such a wide range of product data and designs makes the engineering of a centrifuge for a given application a viable propo-sition,” says Willem slabbert a process and application manager at Multotec.

Continuously operating centri-fuges have long established their place in the solid/liquid separation

process. They can dewater large quanti-ties of solids to low final moistures, whilst needing little space, energy and time. By installing the correct centrifuge, organisa-tions will reduce the cost of thermal drying considerably and may even make it superflu-

ous. siebtechnik specialises in the development and manufacture of con-tinuously operating centrifuges, and supplies centrifuges across a broad range of industries, including mining, chemical, pharmaceutical and food and beverage processing.

BaseD on long-standing world-wide experience in spray nozzle and spray control technology,

Monitor engineering know how impor-tant it is - especially today - to reduce production costs.

Their worldwide leadership in spray technology can help operate more efficiently and save money. Precise control of lubricating appli-cations can reduce oil consump-tion by up to 90% and can eliminate time-consuming cleaning of parts. The company offers two autojet lubri-cation systems, namely the L210, which is for low viscosity media and the P400 which is for all types of vis-cosity (up to 600 cst.).

The L210 system uses airless noz-zles to apply low-viscosity media, and due to their flat spray pattern the noz-zles cover a substantial width.

The P400 lubrication system uses air atomizing spray nozzles to apply high viscosity media (more than 600 cst).

all nozzles have a needle which pre-cisely opens and closes the nozzle with each spray pulse and which effec-tively cleans the orifice

from any residue or debris. The noz-zles are air-controlled and all circuits can be controlled independently.

This allows exact control and repeatable metering of the cir-culated oil and provides full control over the applied amount and the thickness of the oil/lubricant layer.

The combined use of both the P400 and the L210 offers a perfect solution if both high-vis-cosity oils (e.g. for deep drawing) and emulsions, thin-fluid or volatile vanishing oils are used.

The units work independently of one another, preventing intermixing of lubricants and simultaneous control of both units reduces set-up times.

Both systems consist of a base unit and a coil lubricator. an optional filter unit prevents air containing oil from polluting the surrounding air.

The base unit consists of an air-operated diaphragm pump which draws the lubricating fluid from the container through a suction filter.

Lubricant is pushed through the lines to the spray nozzles mounted in the coil lubricator using low pressure. Double air jets distribute the lubricant

over the work piece in a uni-form film. The coil lubricator is an effec-

tive solution for the lubrication of bands in automatic presses. Due

to the sturdy stainless steel construction it is also able to with-stand heavy loads. For band widths

between 100 - 1,600 mm.

Pneumatic lift-ing cylinders open the coil lubricator - fixed versions are also available. The

coil lubricator is fit-ted with a return line with an optional

f i l - ter. The exact metering of the lubricant

guarantees absolute repeatability, with the L210 offering precise index-ing of pumps and the P400, precise air pressure control.

Other benefits include optimum dis-tribution of the lubricating fluid on the coil (top, bottom, both sides), easy maintenance due to pneumatic lifting cylinders, quick and easy assembly, no misting or pollution of the work environment and optional installation of additional nozzles for spot lubrica-tion of critical points.

very slim design (28 x 30 mm) and long ranges up to 20 m. Finger, hand and body protection reliably ensure primary guarding or access prevention.

The units are available as Type 2 and type 4 safety light curtains to IeC 61496 and with sIL to IeC 61508 and PL to IsO 13849. These light cur-tains have been designed for protected area heights of 160 mm to 1 510 mm in intervals of 150 mm.

a resolution (detection capacity) of 30, 40, 50 or 90 mm can be selected. Light grids are offered with 2, 3 or 4 beams.

The units are easy to install due to a T-slot on the back. Using the enclosed angle brackets, the units can be installed vertically or horizon-tally and without dead band on one side.

When materials are fed to a machine such as a press, for example, the process should not stop.

The OY8 safety light curtains allow blanking from up to three adjacent beams without the safety light curtain triggering the safety func-tion. For body or hand protection the safety device switches off if more than the configured beams or none of the adjacent beams are interrupted.

seLeCTInG the most appropriate door or closure for an open-ing is not as simple as it would

initially appear. Wim Dessing, MD of apex strip Curtains & Doors, cautions that there are several factors that should be considered before making any decisions.

The first element to be considered is the purpose that the door or closure will serve within its environment. “The type of business will dictate the type of doorway as well as the position of the opening that needs to be served. Obviously, there are different parame-ters to consider when the installation is in full view of customers as opposed to one where it is positioned at the back end of the site,” Dessing points out.

another element to consider is the type of traffic that will pass through the opening. In some instances, only pedestrians will use the opening

whereas in other instances motorised traffic such as pallets jacks, trolleys or forklifts may be added to the equation. In addition, one needs to determine whether the traffic is moving in a one or two way direction.

“In order to ensure optimal and unhindered traffic flow, the layout at the opening should be investigated. Questions to ask include whether the entrance point orientation is straight and readily accessible, or whether traffic needs to negotiate sharp or narrow turns. The frequency of use is also important as well as the number of hours the opening will be accessed during any given day as this informa-tion will directly affect the choice of door or opening,” Dessing continues.

The practicalities of environmental influence need to be factored in to ensure that customer goals are met. “We look at whether the opening is situated between an air-conditioned or heated facility and the exterior. Other aspects to consider include the humidity or moisture content of the ambient environment. some work environments are prone to dust and

High impact doors can enhance productivityother airborne pollutants so one needs to determine in advance how the doors or closures will be cleaned, in order to provide a solution that lends itself to hygiene while concurrently not becoming a high maintenance issue,” says Dessing.

Finally, the aesthetics of the doors or closures will influence the choice of product. “Will the doors or closures, for example, be subjected to accidental bump-ing and possible damage? If yes, then a door or closure constructed from durable material needs to

be chosen. In addition, are there other aesthetic considerations such as whether the product needs to match existing décor, or alternatively whether it should be an obvious feature that does not blend into the background?” he stresses.

apex strip Curtains & Doors has developed a range of products suited to all applications. each product range can be customised to suit specific opening require-ments based on a number of pre-determined factors.

MaGneT - specialists in the sup-ply, implementation and sup-port of electrical equipment,

industrial instrumentation and automa-tion – has introduced a thermal imag-ing service, designed to reduce plant breakdowns, minimise costly repairs, optimise the production process and improve safety in the workplace.

“Thermal imaging technology has become one of the most valuable diagnostic tools for industrial applica-tions,” says Brian Bilton, Magnet’s training manager. “By detecting irregu-larities that are usually invisible to the naked eye, thermal imaging allows corrective action to be taken before costly system failures or fires occur.

“Magnet’s new thermal imaging ser-vice forms part of a condition monitor-ing programme to determine when and where maintenance is needed in electrical and mechanical instal-lations and components. By using reliable, non invasive thermal imaging

instruments, which are able to scan and visualise the temperature distri-bution of entire surfaces of machinery and electrical equipment quickly and accurately, preventative action is taken in the event of a fault. What is important for production plants, is that Magnet is able to perform inspections, even when systems are under load.

“This specialist service encom-passes the provision of a full image of each situation and accu-rate temperature data during the

monitoring of high voltage equipment, low voltage cabinets, motors, pumps and high temperature equipment, as well the detection of insulation losses.”

a small electrical problem can have far reaching consequences. as the efficiency of the electrical grid becomes low, more energy is used generating heat. If left unchecked, this heat can rise to the point where connections start to melt and this can result in a devastating fire.

Magnet is able to identify and locate a fault before costly problems occur and also advise exactly what needs to be fixed. This thermal imaging service - which extends from the examination of a fuse box, to the inspection of a large industrial installation - ensures cost savings, reduced downtime and improved safety standards.

serCO’s ability to solve customer chal-lenges has resulted in the Company designing a trailer to accommodate rails

and beams sourced by serco to enable the loading a second row of pallets to a refriger-ated trailer, giving a 60 pallet load capacity.

The lightweight - yet highly durable - dou-ble stacking system can be used in both refrigerated and dry freight trailers, with the entire system adding just 640kg in weight to a vehicle.

representatives from the refrigerated divi-sion of Imperial Logistics (ILrs) approached serco to develop a trailer to facilitate the stacking of pallets. The challenge was that with the conventional 30 pallet refrigerated trailer, the full cubic load space was not being fully utilized due to the fragile nature of the specific loads which prevented stacking to maximum height.

serco MD Clinton Holcroft explained that when certain products are stacked, often the weight from those on top cause damage to the products below. “In that event there’s a limit to how high you can stack the stock, which results in full use not being made of the vehi-cle’s interior load space.”

“For Imperial Logistics refrigerated services the system now allows them to pack almost to the roof, giving maximum use of internal space. Basically the system comprises rails fitted vertically to the specially reinforced side walls of the trailer with movable aluminium bars across which the pallets are placed.

“The aluminium bars can be adjusted to the required height to allow flexibility for different height pallets. The top level is fully self sup-porting and able to carry up to 1000kgs across the span of each beam.’

With increasing fuel costs, this innovative solution enables transporters to optimize load fill and thereby reduce carbon emissions and running costs.

PrUDenT sourcing and selection of build-ing materials and fittings and fixtures has delivered Lakehaven Phase 11- a ground

breaking social housing project that will defi-nitely raise the bar in this segment of the hous-ing arena.

Dirk Meyer, managing director of Corobrik, said that Corobrik is proud to have been asso-ciated with what is Durban’s third greenfields project. Lakehaven Phase 11 has a proud line-age. It’s Phase 1 predecessor received the cov-

Building up social housing in eThekwinieted social Housing Project of the year 2011 award from the southern african Housing Foundation (saHF).

“Lakehaven Phase 11 takes this a step further. Through the far sight-ed substitution of cheaper building materials with higher quality build-ing materials, First Metro Housing and construction, cost and project managers, HDH, have as good as redefined social housing and made it aspirational,” he said.

social Housing is a government subsidised rental or co-operative housing option for people with monthly household incomes of between r1 500 and r7 500.

Lakehaven Phase 1 comprises 312 units. The second phase provides a further 280 units within 34 double story blocks of flats. Construction began in early 2013 and it is on track for completion by mid-year. The first 88 units are already occupied. selection of ten-ants for the remainder will begin during the second half of the year.

a gated, security controlled entrance and

individual parking bays provide a step up for social housing. There are also plans to create a park, sports field and community hall.

all upgrades were facilitated well within strict budgetary constraints and to meet strict objectives outlined by government. Mehmood Hoosen, HDH’s principal agent, pointed out that, while costs were kept low, the end prod-uct was of a high standard to the point where Lakehaven Phase 11 had definitely added value to the area.

In line with capital subsidies provided through the Institutional subsidy and the Capital restructuring Grant, social housing developments must adhere to strict principles that extend beyond construction.

WITH frequent changes in labour legis-lation, entrepreneurs have to ensure that they are compliant or face signifi-

cant financial penalties that could threaten the future of their companies, according to James McKerrell, (pictured) CeO of Technologies south africa, a human resources and payroll integrated software solutions company.

“Through our research, we found that small entrepreneurs are the most at risk when it comes to labour legislation as they often lack the specialist knowledge required to be com-pliant. It is alarming to see how many of them

use friends and family to help with certain administrative functions but do not meet the necessary legislative requirements,” he says.

For example, if a small business deducts tax from employees but does not pay it over they are breaking the law. also, if a business owner trans-ports employees to a site then he or she needs to have a public transpor-tation permit to do so.

not having the proper paperwork in place can lead to significant financial and

reputational damage.“There are also tax rules to

observe. For example, overtime and bonus pay use different formulas and only software that is approved by sars can be used. even if an entrepreneur invites his or her senior manager and his wife to a weekend away then it can be construed as a benefit which has to be taxed. so the wording of policy documents, regard-ing benefits from the company, is

crucial,” he adds.

The management and administration of sala-ries and labour requirements have become specialised. Ignorance of the law is no excuse and companies can be liable for large fines and labour inspections.

“Fortunately, it is not as difficult to be compli-ant as it sounds. With the necessary knowl-edge and working with the right partners, entrepreneurs can build everything themselves correctly and accurately without having to spend a fortune in the long-term. These part-ners need to provide the specialised services an entrepreneur requires and ensure systems are compliant with all the latest regulations and tax regimes to make sure that the focus can be on the core business,” he concludes.

HeaT, cold, humidity and other environ-mental factors cause oxidation and cor-rosion of racking and shelving systems

– posing significant operation and mainte-nance challenges for warehouses. To ensure long-lasting protection of its products, aPC storage solutions sa uses the most advanced treatment process on all of its racking and shelving products: cataphoresis, providing a level of resistance that is three times higher than conventional painting.

Cataphoresis is a specialised painting and treatment process based on electro-chemical technology that relies on the cathodic painting of metal surfaces. The cathodic amino resins act as corrosion and rust inhibitors. Once applied, the pieces are immersed in a special-ised electric preparation bath to provide the ultimate in metal-treatment.

This specialised treatment also acts as a fire barrier for racking and shelving systems with the ignition temperature being over 200°C.

In addition to being three times more cor-rosion- and rust-resistant than conventional painting, cataphoresis also provides greater resistance to harmful elements than electro-static painting does. “In a salt sprayed fog

chamber, for example, electrostatic painting without our cataphoresis treatment can only withstand 160 hours before surface damage occurs. With cataphoresis, however, surfaces can withstand up to 550 hours,” says Fred albrecht, Managing Director, aPC storage solutions sa. “In layman’s terms, a car’s ped-als will never rust, even at the sea, because they are treated with cataphoresis. We apply the same principal to our racking and shelv-ing.”

In addition, the mutual attraction between the painted pieces and the electrodes immersed at the sides of the bath during the painting pro-cess causes a strong and precise coverage of the whole surface of the equipment– enabling it to reach the most inaccessible areas and provide a uniform coating.

Once treated, the storage equipment under-goes hydro soluble paint and powder coat-ing to guarantee not only superior rust- and corrosion-resistance, but also a high quality paint job.

Cataphoresis treatment comes standard with aPC storage solutions sa’s entire range of racking and shelving systems.

Transporting goods throughout africa is a massive industry – an industry that has very specific insurance requirements. all too often transporters are unaware

of the pitfalls that could lead to their claims being repudi-ated, says steve Cornelius - Head of automotive and Transportation at Indwe risk services

a recent study showed that in excess of 60% of trucks are not roadworthy – that translates into over 60% of claims relating to these trucks being repudiated or partial settle-ments being made. For any transporter that figure should be a massive wake-up call.

While south africa has yet to implement the sophisticat-ed systems that the UK has adopted, new laws are being promulgated with a view to keeping trucks on the straight and narrow by holding the consignor, the consignee and the transporter liable for accidents. Get a head start by ensuring that you have the following in place: • Check the validity of every driver’s licence – it can have

catastrophic consequences if documents are found to be lacking or fraudulent.

• Pay attention to the physical wellbeing of drivers –regular eye tests, blood sugar and blood pressure tests as well as TB tests are advisable.

• Obtain rTMs accreditation and renew the COF (Certificate of Fitness) and PDP (Professional Driver’s Permit) annually.

• road transporters and those who utilise their services must take responsibility for the issues that plague the industry – issues such as late loading and overloading. Late loading puts the drivers under pressure, forcing

them to travel during unsafe hours (11:00 pm – 4:00 am) while overloading causes huge delays at the weighbridge as goods are unpacked and repacked.

• Incentivising drivers to arrive at destinations earlier than scheduled encourages them to skip the necessary rest breaks and drive faster to make up time. It is not uncom-mon for drivers to work a straight 24-hour shift and one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out the consequences. although the initial outlay may be a little pricey, trans-

porters should seriously consider investing in cabin cameras.

The benefits are significant and include reducing potential liability claims and insurance premiums, saving fuel, and ensuring better safety and performance stand-ards.

no transporter can afford to be complacent when it comes to insurance.

Buying insurance based pure-ly on lower premiums or lower excess structures is the equiva-lent of tunnel vision. Don’t take chances when it comes to having the right insurance – there is sim-ply too much riding on it.

Lifting in Explosive Environments

sInCe entering the low cost hous-ing sector six months ago, esor Civils has experienced success

beyond expectation and is presently working on two government subsidised projects to provide 1 000 low cost houses in the village of enhlangweni, in the Umzumbe municipality near Ixopo, and 500 units in the village of ezinqolweni, in the Mthimude munici-pality near Port shepstone.

More recently, esor Civils has secured the provision of low cost housing in Bhobhoyi, close to Port

shepstone, and is earmarked for a further project in the Umzumbe area, and has also set its sights on the eastern Cape.

“Low cost housing is something quite new for us and it’s working out very well,” Mark rippon, man-aging director of esor Civils, says. “We already have a diversified port-folio that includes road building, mining and township infrastructure work, water and sewerage reticula-tion contracts and concrete pro-jects for government, major min-

ing houses and the private sector. although our move into low cost housing is at the inception stage, we’ve been very excited at these early successes and we believe there is significant potential to expand into this sector of the market. We’re proving that we’re reliable and able to deliver these projects to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. “

“Low cost housing is still very much a government focus and the recent increased subsidy will see the specifications improve from the two-roomed 40m² dwelling with rainwater harvesting and an outhouse, that we are building at Muzumbe and Thimude, to dwellings of the same size but now plumbed and electri-fied and including an inside bathroom with a basic hand basin, toilet and shower. The upgraded specifications will also be applicable to the scope of the Bhobhoyi and second Muzumbe projects.”

On these projects esor Civils has teamed up with Consulting engineers Bigen africa, a leading design engineering company with a strong presence in southern africa and a growing african footprint. Bigen africa takes responsibility for

early success with low cost housingthe design of the houses, pro-vides site supervision during con-struction and conducts quality assurance before the houses are handed over.

On each low cost housing pro-ject, the esor Civils team identi-

fies local emerging sub-contrac-tors and supports them with the procurement of materials and the provision of training, effectively equipping them with experience and marketable capabilities.

COMBIneD Motor Holdings (CMH) has announced the opening of a new mod-ern r45 million UD Trucks dealership in

KwaZulu-natal. This new facility, situated in Pinetown, offers UD Trucks customers in the region a proverbial one-stop-shop with com-plete sales, service, parts and finance support.

CMH is an investment holding company with well-established roots in the retail motor sector. The company represent a number of highly recognised leading brand dealer-ships across south africa, including the new UD Trucks facility in Pinetown and another in Pietermaritzburg.

“We aim to provide customer satisfaction in all aspects of business and create a pleasant and challenging working environment for all our employees, as well as develop a trustwor-thy and strong relationship with both our share-holders and suppliers,” said ron Byng, dealer

principal of CMH Commercial UD Trucks. “We believe that this new facility will enable us to provide even better and more flexible support to our customers.”

UD Trucks and CMH have a relationship that spans more than 35 years, with UD being one of the company’s first franchises.

“We believe that UD Trucks offers truck owners a variety of applications, dependabil-ity, quality and cost effectiveness, no matter the size of their fleet. UD Trucks is a winning brand on all fronts,” said Byng. “In addition, the people behind the brand are passionate and professional, supporting us every step of the way.”

Jacques Carelse, managing director of UD Trucks southern africa said this new facility is a true testimony of CMH’s commitment and faith in the UD Trucks brand.

“During the next few years, UD Trucks will

be launching a number of new game-changing products and services. We are very excited about the future of the brand in the country and with the support provided by CMH in the region, we know our customers will reap the benefits in their businesses,” said Carelse.

aFrIsaM’s C-Tech cements are pushing the limits of cement and concrete tech-

nology to produce products with exceptional performance charac-teristics which are also environ-mentally responsible.

“Our achievements in the arena of composite technology (C-Tech) personify afrisam’s ethos of inno-vation, aimed at ensuring that our customers always enjoy the benefits of high performing prod-ucts,” Mike McDonald, manager of afrisam’s Centre of Product excellence, says. “This methodol-ogy is also driven by our commit-ment to support the environment by producing cements with ever lower carbon footprints.”

“Our C-Tech products are the result of an on-going development process that began in 2000 and is still moving forward, beyond conventional bounda-ries. The mineral components in these cements have been engineered to make the resultant composite cement

superior to pure cement. These prod-ucts offer a spectrum of functional attributes that provide our customers guaranteed quality performance.”

C-Tech technology reduces the car-bon intensive Portland clinker con-tent of cement ensuring that afrisam cements tread more lightly on the

environment. Their mineral com-ponents carry significantly less embodied carbon than clinker, effectively reducing the carbon footprint associated with the cement production process.

In the process, afrisam is also able to conserve natural resourc-es such as limestone. The use of C Tech minerals in the manufac-turing of composite cements make constructive use of by products from other industries, reducing the need to landfill these materials.

The introduction of engineered mineral components in increased proportions to cement clinker presents afrisam customers with enhanced functional performance

qualities. afrisam C-Tech cements also con-

tain mineral components that pro-duce superior long term strengths compared to pure cements, where strength gain typically flattens out from 28 days onward.

WITH rising costs in electricity generation, increased demand and

frequent ‘black outs’ compounded by cable theft, the search for renewable energy power sources is becoming increasingly urgent.

rand Technical services (rTs), based in Tshwane, has added an exciting new product to its portfolio: a hydrogen battery robust enough for the harshest african conditions.

The hydrogen electrolyser, cre-

energy-efficient alternative power sources ated and manufactured by Italian ‘clean technology’ company aCTa, presents a viable alternative to conventional power sources, particularly in areas where electric-ity supply is unreliable.

“The product, aCTa Power, was devel-oped to act as a stand-by power supply in cases where there is erratic power supply. The technology is a back-up power system in battery form, using a renewable natural resource – hydrogen - which is stored at pres-sure,” explains rTs’s Chairman Ian Fraser. “This is relatively new technology, and we are very excited to introduce it to this country where we believe it has significant potential.”

The battery uses technology similar to that of fuel cells, but in reverse, according to Fraser. While fuel cells convert oxygen and hydrogen into water, producing electricity in the process, the hydrogen battery technology creates an automatic power source through separating oxygen from hydrogen and the subsequent chemical reaction.

“The aCTa Power hydrogen battery is a robust, stand-alone unit which is suitable for the african climate and environment. It has a wide application, but would be particularly suited to smaller installations. For exam-ple, a telecommunications installation in a remote location, where renewable energy resources are used, such as solar and wind,” says Fraser.

“as a replacement of normal stand-by power supply, it is extremely economical, particularly in comparison to a diesel elec-tricity-generation system. aCTa hydrogen batteries are also cost-effective because of their durability. These units operate for 5 to 10 years and more, without needing replacing, and run completely on renew-able resources. additionally, being virtually ‘theft-proof’, the hydrogen battery is advan-tageous in areas where theft, especially of generators and batteries, can be a real problem. This adds to its cost benefits.”

THe wood preservation and building timber indus-try is set to discover a revolutionary new product, called Biligom timber, that will pioneer a platform

for entrepreneurial opportunities and job creation as well as provide solutions to some of the industry’s commodity challenges.

Biligom International (Pty) Ltd, a south african com-pany, has developed and patented a way to manufacture eucalyptus construction and building timber that complies with all requirements for ongoing technical and quality accreditation as demanded by the industry.

Biligom is currently in full production and will shortly be negotiating license agreements with interested parties who want to produce the product.

Lonza Wood Protection has played an instrumental role in the design of the treatment plants for Biligom timber, with the first Tanalith e plant already installed and in production near Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province.

The project has received notable endorsements from var-ious financing houses and other institutions. Furthermore, abie steers, Head of the south african Technical auditing services (saTas), has confirmed that he has audited and awarded full saTas accreditation to Biligom, and is satisfied that the entire production pro-cess together with all the documentation submitted has been verified with the wood preservation treatment.

Biligom is positioned as a lucrative business opportunity for black entrepreneurs, who will be able to establish them-selves in a sustainable construction wood and preservation treatment business that will create job opportunities within their communities.

Prospective clients who obtain a license for the Biligom /saTas certified business kit will enjoy a reasonably hassle free start up experience and Lonza will be responsible for the supply and installation of the Tanalith e treatment plants and the supply of Tanalith e timber preservative at each production unit.

During the research stage of this product, a thesis by post graduate student Philip Crafford, mentored by Brand Wessels from the University of stellenbosch, was commissioned by Biligom. The recommendations from this study were implemented and led to the final stages of adjudication for actual truss strength values by MiTek based in Midrand, Gauteng. MiTek have endorsed this product and have written the necessary software for its commercial appli-cation.

Biligom timber addresses and provides a groundbreaking solu-tion to the growing industry prob-lem of a shortage of pine. In com-parison to the 20 – 35 year growth turnaround time of pine, sawn green eucalyptus gum can now be treated with Tanalith e while still wet - meaning a much shorter 6-year turnaround time.

eThekwini Municipality is inundated with com-plaints from the public

about power outages result-ing from the criminal acts of electricity and cable theft. Cable and electricity theft often leads to devastating and tragic consequences, such as loss of life as well as damage to infrastruc-ture costing the Municipality approximately r230 million annually.

Mayor Cllr, James nxumalo said these offenders have an inflated sense of entitlement in both attitude and behav-iour which will no longer be tolerated. He said electricity and cable thieves must be stopped, not only because of the impact on our daily lives and in the long term, our economy and job crea-tion, but also because of the deadly consequences.

“The negative impacts of illegal elec-tricity connections include the hefty costs of replacement of infrastructure and hiring security, the shutdown of business operations, loss of income and loss of exports. Cable theft also

affects power, communica-tion lines and transport net-work outages and leads to negative investor percep-tions,” he said.

nxumalo further urged all citizens to demonstrate civic pride and a sense of co-ownership of our resources, assets and the environment we live in. “We should all play our part

towards enhancing the economic, social and cultural diversity of our City, by not vandalising Municipal or com-munity infrastructure and infringing by-laws,” said nxumalo.

acts of vandalism taking place in our communities cannot be addressed by the Municipality and police alone. They require vigilance from us as community members and we must not look away when we know that our relatives, neighbours and friends are involved in these illicit activities.

The following are some of the modi-fications made to the infrastructure and/or initiatives taken in an effort to overcome the problem

• Frequent removal of illegal con-nections: illegal services contrac-tor teams, escorted by the security guards remove illegal connections on a regular basis. some of the perpetrators of these illegal activities have been arrested however, charg-es are often dropped due to the lack of tangible evidence and the low fines imposed are not a deterrent;

• affected service connections have been converted from underground mains to overhead mains, to mini-mise the interruption of supply to these customers;

• The overhead, bare copper, low voltage circuits have been replaced with aerial bundled conductor (abc) as a deterrent to tapping onto the exposed copper lines;

• Circuits have been reconfigured to reduce the interruption of supplies;

• awareness programmes have been conducted to educate customers/cit-izens on safety, reporting of the theft of electricity and the consequences of connecting electricity illegally;

• The municipality has previously deployed security guards in areas

with high cable theft incidents, but this initiative was discontin-ued, as one guard was shot dead; short poles have been replaced with longer ones to prevent access to the over-head cables/connections. nxumalo invites the public to share their ideas with the city including any advanced cable

theft prevention methods that will help us win the fight against this crime.

any suspicion of cable theft must be reported to the following numbers: electricity’s call centre 080 13 13 111, sms : 083 700 0819 or email [email protected] or the cable theft hotline 031 311 9611.

ZesT energy, a Zest WeG Group com-pany, is poised to deliver the first of three mobile substations ordered by eskom for

deployment within its Mpumalanga Operating Unit.

eskom will utilise the three new units — 40 MVa, 20 MVa and 10 MVa — during fixed type substation refurbishments, maintenance and breakdowns as well as to improve the reliability of the grid network by limiting the duration of power interruptions.

The mobile outdoor substation equipment will be mounted and installed on custom engineered trailers that comply with the south african

road ordinance legislation in regard to weight and overall equipment dimensions. During trans-portation, the effects of trailer flex and movement on the integrity of the transformer design were also important considerations that had to be analysed.

“Our parent organisation WeG has built this type of mobile substation for more than a decade and has supplied units extensively to south america,” Coenraad Vrey, managing director of Zest energy, says.

“We’re drawing on WeG’s capabilities and experience for this order and WeG’s broad range of international references gave eskom

Mobile substation peace of mind that we were able to deliver a solution to suit their requirements.”

“In the planning stages of this contract, our design team consulted heavily with eskom engineers to ensure that we gained a full understanding of their standard specifications and project engineering requirements. Zest energy is not an off the shelf solution company — our custom engineered solutions take into consideration all the various constants and customers’ preferred equipment specifications.

“The transformer is the specialist aspect of the eskom units and Zest energy, in consultation with eskom and our WeG counterparts, has been able to come up with a very compact design specific to local conditions.”

Zest WeG Group has supplied power transformers to eskom for several years already, but these are the first mobile

substations the company has been asked to manufacture for the power utility. The technical and legislative requirements for these substations call for extensive engineering and testing to design a product that is compliant.

The transformers for the mobile substations are imported from WeG in Brazil and the substation’s switchgear is also imported from various international countries, but all other substation components are being manufactured in south africa, which is where the substations will also be assembled to promote maximum local content.

CaTerPILLar’s new Cat CB44B and CB54B B-series tandem drum vibratory compactors build on the track record of

the proven models that they succeed, namely the CB434D and CB534D, and come to market with a host of advanced features that are designed to match varied job site require-ments, from parking lots to mainline paving. additionally, these machines offer multiple vibratory choices to match amplitude and fre-quency requirements.

“Whilst some of the features have changed on the B-series, the best-in-class vibrato-ry systems haven’t,” points out Barloworld equipment paving industry manager, Johan Hartman. “It’s still easy to match frequency to amplitude in order to achieve predetermined densities in the fewest number of passes.”

The CB44B and CB54B tandem vibratory rollers compete in the 5 to 8, and 8 to 11,3 ton class, respectively. Both machines are driven by four cylinder Cat C4.4 engines, each configured with different ratings to maximise power to weight ratios, and in turn meeting eU stage IIIa standards. Machines supplied to the southern african market come standard with a FOPs cab, which features full floor-to-ceiling glass, enabling good sight lines to the

drum edges, drum surfaces, and both sides of the machine.

On the go, ease of operation is simplified with a newly designed centre-articulating hitch with six degrees of oscillation that ensures mat contact and a smoother ride over uneven surfaces. an offset option of up to 170 mm extends coverage and simplifies control next to obstacles.

Well suited to all types of mix designs and applications, both machines perform equally well in vibratory or static mode, providing high variations of amplitudes for breakdown and intermediate tasks, while their high static linear loads deliver excellent results for finish-ing work.

IFM electronic’s new gen-eration Pn pressure sen-sor series combines the

tried-and-tested strengths of the previous models with considerably increased accuracy, user-friendliness and robustness. With a high overload protection, IP67 for all types in the series, and the captive laser labelling, make the new Pn sensors suitable for use in harsh environments.

although the housing size has remained unchanged, the display size has been increased once again and the two switch-ing status LeDs on the sensor head can be clearly seen from all sides. The display can be switched from a ‘red’ indication to an alter-nating indication of ‘red to green’. Therefore, the switching states can be highlighted or an independent colour window can be created. The new Pn sensor is quickly and easily set using three pushbuttons, and due to the new process connection with G 1/8 thread and numerous fixing holes, the Pn78 meets common pneumatic standards. The Pn sen-sor features a measuring cell especially for pneumatic applications.

OneLOGIX are delighted with the quality and performance of the DaF trucks we’ve pur-

chased, as well as the high levels of aftersales service provided by Babcock,” says Ian Lourens, Chief executive Officer of OneLogix Group Ltd, a niche logistics provider with an extensive footprint across sub-saharan africa.

Group company OneLogix Projex originally purchased six DaF trucks in

2012 and, based on their exceptional performance, followed this with a sec-ond order for 11 DaF XF vehicles in January 2014. This order comprised ten DaF XF105.460 MT23 air suspension 6 x 4 vehicles

and one DaF XF105.460 Hr1355 steel suspension /hub reduction vehi-cle. For this customer, the XF105.460 Hr1355 unit was delivered with altered differential ratios to accom-modate a heavy haul application of up to 100 tons. OneLogix Projex is using its DaF trucks for highway haulage of machines and containerised cargo, both nationally and cross-border. Driver training has also been provided and will be ongoing.

another Group company, OneLogix Linehaul, also recently purchased five DaF CF 85 truck tractors, which have been deployed to pull 14,5 m tri-axle trailers. OneLogix Linehaul request-ed that long range fuel tanks, anti-syphoning devices and bull bars be fitted to these vehicles.

Babcock, which is responsible for the marketing, sales and service of DaF trucks throughout southern africa, also provided driver training to ensure OneLogix Linehaul driv-ers are able to exploit all the on-board features to the maximum. “We were thrilled to receive this sig-nificant repeat order, as it reflects immense confidence in our product,” says reshaad Mahomed, DaF truck sales executive.

“This order also effectively strengths our relationship with the OneLogix Group. In europe, the DaF brand is known to be synonymous with quality and the local market is also beginning to recognise that DaF has immense potential to boost the profit-ability of any transport business, offer-ing the lowest vehicle tare weight in southern africa, as well as low fuel consumption and a variety of service and maintenance plans, all of which make it a very cost effective choice.”

COMPresseD air prod-ucts distribution company Goscor KLG recently per-

formed a series of energy audits at various Barloworld facilities, one at Barloworld Power’s main Boksburg campus, as well as at six of Barloworld equipment’s branches nationally, which indicat-ed that significant energy savings could be achieved by replacing existing oversized compressors with smaller, correctly sized units that use power more efficiently.

The audits typically take seven consecutive days to attain a realistic workload profile of the

plant. In addition to Barloworld Power in Boksburg, energy audits were completed at Barloworld equipments Isando, Bellville, Bloemfontein, Durban, Middleburg and Germiston branches.

Goscor KLG project engineer Colin Tyrrell says new sullair com-pressors, have been installed at Barloworld equipment’s Isando and Bellville facilities and save about 70% and 25% respective-ly in energy consumption when compared to the original compres-sor installation.

a sullair sT1508rD 15 kW com-pressor was installed at Boksburg, while in Isando, a s_energy 4507V 45 kW variable-speed drive com-pressor was installed. However, at Bellville, although the existing 75 kW compressor was replaced with another 75 kW compressor (s-energy 7507VCC), this com-pressor’s variable-capacity control feature – which enables a com-pressor to mechanically adjust to large variances in the load profile made the difference.

Installation of the compressors at the other branches is undergo-ing capital expenditure processes. “some of the plants require further investigation regarding medium-term plant expansion and other rationalisation matters that may affect the compressed-air require-ments,” notes Tyrrel.

aT a time when the southern and pan-african mining and engi-neering sectors are facing many

challenges, companies are looking for suppliers which can offer them the widest and most robust range of prod-ucts to assist them in addressing the challenges that they face.

rand-air, a locally-based equip-ment hire company with parent com-pany atlas Copco, has embraced this challenge, offering one of the widest product ranges in the market.

The latest addition to the mining and construction industries is no excep-tion.

In response to increasing demand, rand-air Fleet Manager Craig swart points out that the company is intro-ducing a booster which is very versa-tile, and can be used in a number of applications.

“We have had numerous enquiries from customers for higher pressure equipment. This has emanated mainly from the drilling industry, and the natu-ral gas drilling sector in particular. Currently, we have a hire in place with a drilling company in Botswana. We are investing in these boosters both as back up and to service any additional customer requirements, should they arise,” says Craig.

He adds that the Hurricane Booster offers customers a number of advan-tages. The main one is that the boost-er can operate at various pressures, and is not limited to one pre-set pres-sure. The Hurricane Booster comes with a diesel engine and requires a compressor for feed air.

Craig points out that most competi-tors focus on providing a booster block only. The Hurricane Booster also has

a relatively small physical footprint, because of its vertical set-up and valve design, and weighs less – with the same capacity - which makes it extremely mobile.

The hallmark of a great product is the number of industries that it can be used in.

While there are products which are specifically designed for one industry, the Hurricane Booster can be used effectively across a number of indus-tries.

THe capacity to source and supply the right product for

a specialised industrial requirement has always been key to elquip solutions’ success. since the 1980’s, the Boksburg-based company has estab-lished itself as a key local provider of global, market-leading electrical com-ponents, tooling and machinery.

To this end, elquip solutions has introduced a high-end, comprehen-sive range of flexible conduit systems and components from UK manufac-turer Flexicon to the south african market.

as specialists in flexible conduit solutions, Flexicon has developed two broad product ranges, metallic and non-metallic, available from 10mm to

106mm in diameter. The com-pany also has a wide range of patented fittings and connec-tors, locking and non-locking, designed for ease of use and adaptable for any application.

“Flexicon supplies a num-ber of industries world-

wide, including photovoltaic, mov-ing machinery, electrical contracting and mining. They also focus on the rail industry, and have designed and developed a range specifically to meet the needs of this technically demand-ing sector,” says scheepers.

When it comes to the rail industry, IP ratings, tensile strength character-istics, weight, corrosion resistance, fire performance properties and oper-ating temperature ranges are all fac-tors to consider. added to this are the specifications related to a passenger

rail environment, such as aesthetics, low fire hazard and ease of installation in confined spaces.

“Having been designed to meet all the requirements of the rail environ-ment, Flexicon conduits are highly robust, but offer ease of use and installation; and have been developed according to the highest global indus-try standards,” notes scheepers.

elquip solutions has supplied a number of projects within the south african rail industry with Flexicon’s metallic range (LTP and FsU), manu-factured in galvanised steel or stain-less steel. They have also developed the non-metallic range (FPas), which is manufactured from a range of mate-rials, such as nylon, offering different properties according to the demands of the environment.

With south africa’s Passenger rail agency’s (Prasa’s) latest announce-ment of a r51 billion ten year invest-ment into procuring 600 new, modern commuter and passenger trains, the rail sector holds significant opportuni-ties, says scheepers.

assTech offers a full selection of Wenglor security products such as safety light curtains, vari-

ous safety switches, relays and inter-locks as well as protection columns, designed to boost system availability and to prevent production downtime with intelligent self-monitoring and early diagnosis.

To ensure maximum freedom in sys-tem design the safety technology has been developed to provide maximum safety for personnel and equipment, even in the smallest spaces. In addi-tion, the products are easy to handle, configure and install and are wear free and particularly simple to clean.

With light curtains, Wenglor sup-plies four variants. The type 4 device

can be used as both hand and finger protection. equipped with basic func-tions such as protection mode, restart inhibit or protection control, they are suited to hazardous areas. There are no blind spots. Due to visible red light, the safety through-beam sensors are quick to align and can monitor areas of up to 60 m. For applications requir-ing full body protection, the safety light

arrays (types 2 and 4) cover areas between 0.5 and 20 m with red light beams.

new products in the security portfo-lio include four control elements and various safety relays. The emergen-cy stop switch is self-monitoring and tamper-proof enabling fast stopping of systems. Its contactless function-ality ensures long service life. The matching safety lock device prevents access to hazardous areas. The self-monitoring locking force and the high protection against tampering complete this device. The fourth operating ele-ment is the enabling switch that ena-bles work in the hazardous area as a manually operated control unit.

THe TKrT 10 is sKF’s new entry level tachometer, enabling fast and accurate contact and non-

contact speed measurement of rotat-ing objects and surface speeds.

“The sKF TKrT 10 tachometer uses either laser or contact measure-ment for determining rotational and linear speed,” states steve Gething, sKF Business Development Manager reliability systems.

“The laser optical system allows easy and quick measurement at a

safe distance from rotating machinery. Wide speed range and diverse meas-urement modes make the TKrT 10 suitable for measuring speed in many applications,” continues Gething.

The TKrT 10 is equipped with a laser and a range of contact adapters. It is a versatile instrument and suits many different applications.

It’s laser can be used for safe and quick, non-contact rotational speed measurements at distances up to 0.5 m (20 in).

The measurement range goes from 20,000 rpm for contact measure-ments using one of the three adapt-ers supplied, up to 99,999 rpm in non-contact laser mode.

Gething continues, “This compact tachometer is operated with one-hand, has a large backlit LCD display facilitating easy reading in almost all environments. Up to ten readings can be stored in the unit’s memory.”

“The TKrT 10 complements the existing TKrT 20, allowing customers to make a choice of instrument based on their needs,” concludes Gething.

THe blue collar skills shortage in south africa is estimated at around one million jobs. To meet

this demand, training is essential, but the machinery needed is expen-sive. Providing theory and no practical training is insufficient.

To address this, a new widely-acclaimed welding simulator is now available in south africa as a cost-effective alternative to traditional train-ing and provides the same level of skills and with cost savings of at least 40%.

“The soldamatic simulator, which won top honours at this year’s Worlddidac awards for the most inno-vative educational product for 2014, requires no costly welding consum-ables and reduces training time by half,” says Bez sangari, CeO sangari south africa, sole distributors of the product.

“no materials such as welding rods, steel plates or oxygen are needed and because the equipment has no

gas emissions it is eco-friendly,” he says.

“In addition, it is a safe environment with no need for special clothing or ventilation. The weld-ing can be done in any classroom. It is 100% safe, simply because it is a virtual welding envi-ronment.”

“The system is sophis-ticated in providing augmented-reality 3-D vision in a workshop environment. Payback for a large training institu-tion is about 18-24 months. The quick payback period is achieved because no materials are used and there is no wastage,” Mr sangari says.

The simulator consists of a hard-ware unit the size of a standard PC, with a built-in screen that allows the trainer to view the student’s prog-ress in real-time, as well as it being recorded. The trainee wears the virtu-

al-reality headgear which simulates a real welding environment.

The headgear generates realistic welding graphics such as the weld pool and beam. It emits simulated smoke and sparks and simulates heating of the affected area, all through the student’s headgear. It also simulates cracks, filler material, gravity and undercutting.

“Welding skills can be trained for specific applications and the student’s performance measured in a fair, reli-able and unbiased manner. The unit includes 93 different training lessons and customised lessons can also be added,” says Mr sangari.

Both the trainer and trainee are able to analyse and assess the welding performance in a video format after-wards and evaluate skills

Train with welding simulators

WHen machining complex parts made from expen-sive materials, secure per-

formance is clearly vital. With this in mind, cutting tool specialist sandvik Coromant has introduced a range of small CoroMill Plura thread milling cut-ters designed to counter the threat of tool breakage and component damage associated with conventional taps.

The advantages of thread mill-ing compared with tapping are well documented. For example, a thread mill can address a range of hole diameters instead of just one hole

size. The thread mill can also place threads closer to the bottom of

a blind hole, while more room is available for chips

to fall away, thus aiding machine uptime by avoiding the entanglement of swarf around the tool.

However, the greatest benefit is the avoidance of scrapped parts. Few who have worked in a machine shop will have escaped the pain of a bro-ken tap in an expensive component. Often, the part is ruined, along with the tool of course. Only occasionally will a trip to the spark erosion shop save the day, but at a heavy cost in terms of both time and finance.

Medical parts are no exception. Machined commonly from surgi-cal grade stainless steels and hard cobalt-chrome alloys, threading is often one of the final operations. as a result, plenty of value has already been added to the component – there is no margin for error.

The new CoroMill Plura range of small thread mills are designed pur-posely for the type of components required in the medical sector. Ideal for both right- and left-hand threading in materials up to a hardness of 63 Hrc, the tools can generate threads from M1.6 to M12 depending on hole depth and material.

TWenTY schools in the Umlazi district, south of Durban will benefit from a gener-ous donation by the Willowton Group who

has committed r660 000 to the sponsorship of maths and science kits to schools in need in KZn.

The Durban leg of the sponsorship was launched at a function held at the Moses Mabhida stadium in august.

Willowton’s chief executive, abdul razak Moosa with brothers ali akbar Moosa and suleman Farouk Moosa, have worked close-ly on this initiative with representatives of

the Department of education, new africa education Foundation and edutrade, the sup-plier of the learner kits.

They are all confident that the kits will be used by learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12 and will play a major role in improving maths and science performance.

a sum of r500 000 will be spent on the latest CaPs-compliant physical sci-ence kits for 20 Umlazi schools as part of a new eThekwini Municipality initiative which, in partnership with Willowton Group, new africa education Foundation and edutrade, will see

a rollout of science and maths devel-opment kits. This follows the donation of four maths and science kits to four Pietermaritzburg primary schools total-ling r160 000.

The initiative was triggered by the poor performance of south african

learners in the areas of maths and science as revealed in an international survey by the World economic Forum this year, which placed south africa last in a ranking of 148 countries.

razak Moosa said, “There is a shortage of maths and science teachers and learn-ing resources which is resulting in our poor results. education starts at primary schools and learners need to be excited about sci-ence and maths,” he continued. “By changing the way we think we can change the way we learn.”
