    rom the editors

ecause you are reading this note, you are either a medical marijuanapatient in Los Angeles or are just interested in the subject matter o this magaine. No matter which category you all into, the topic o marijuana here in LA andthroughout the country is on a lot o peoples minds. Cities throughout Caliorniaare scurrying to pass local ordinances to regulate distribution and sales.

In LA, the city council may have passed an ordinance shortly aer we go to print. And i the ordinance as currently proposed does pass, then what? Te ordinancewill cause over 90 percent o all o the dispensaries in the city to close their doors.Tis miraculous piece o arbitrary legislation is set to invite one o the biggestlawsuits this city has ever seen.

At least one group has been ormed to attack the ordinance on several levels, in-cluding a city council recall campaign, a reerendum to put the ordinance on theSeptember ballot and yes a class action lawsuit.

Patients that have been patroniing one or more o their avorite collectives ormonths i not years will be orced to choose one o the dispensaries still allowed

to remain open. Patients will be obligated to participate in the aairs o the col-lective, and the collective will only be able to collect reimbursement o costs romthe patient. Please tell me what that means!

    Tis is our humble recommendation:

Patients, i you are happy with the medicine you are getting and with the placesthat you are getting it rom, stay in touch with the people at those collectives to seehow the ordinance has aected them.Collectives, your patients need to know whats up. Tey have been coming to youor a very important reason, and those reasons are not going to change just be-cause a new oning ordinance has been passed. Whether you plan on ghting theordinance, becoming a delivery service here, or moving outside the city limits, letyour patients know so they can nd you.

Fortunately, the new Daily Buds Social Network or Cannabis (www.dailybuds.com) makes it easy to stay in touch. By becoming a member o the Daily Buds

Community patients, collectives and riends can chat about whats happening onthe spur o the moment, post comments and reviews, and keep each other up todate. Collectives can revise the inormation on their directory listing pages any-time they want, in real time, and tell their patients where they are open and alsowhat is in stock. Please join and communicate! Its ree and its un.

We wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. Hang in there and lets nallyget it legalied!

With the beginning o the new decade, Dailybudsofcially launched the revolutionary Dailybuds social

network or Cannabis to rave reviews rom users

nationwide. The new Dailybuds online community is a

game changer or the medical marijuana world, allowing

marijuana patients and enthusiasts to locate dispensaries

in their area, communicate with the stores right on

Dailybuds, make riends online, create and join interest

groups, share inormation and most importantly stay

    connected.

Members just simply log into Dailybuds and are

instantly connected to other medical marijuana patients,

collectives, dispensaries, and doctors, as well as

recreational users, or anyone with a general interest in

    cannabis and the liestyle.

According to Bob Selan, co-ounder o Dailybuds and

the Kush Magazine publications, based on the manysurveys conducted over the past ew years as well as

ocus groups we have arranged, word o mouth rom

riends online is the most powerul and credible way that

people get inormation these days. People would rather

hear comments about a movie rom people they know

then read an ad or a review by someone getting paid to

    write it.

Since the sot launch o the site this past December,

thousands o riendships have already been ormed onDailybuds. Signups on Dailybuds are increasing at a

very rapid pace. Its amazing to see the daily interaction

on the site and almost entirely on a grassroots basis, that

people rom all over the country are signing up. Members

are telling their riends on other social network sites like

Facebook and Myspace about this new Cannabis riendly

experience where users can reely and openly discuss

marijuana and just about anything else they want to talk

about. Many members are reerring to Dailybuds as the

    Facebook o cannabis.

Dailybuds also has exciting eatures including areas to

upload and watch underground music and videos, medica

marijuana news, dispensary listings, and blogs ranging

rom celebrity perspectives on cannabis to legalization

issues. You can also read the digital version o Kush L.A.

Magazine, Kush Colorado Magazine, and upcoming Kush

    magazines right on Dailybuds.

A signifcant application built into the site is the geo-

targeted interactive directory o caregivers collectives,

dispensaries, and medical marijuana doctors. Somewhere

between Craigslist and Facebook, and targeted to the niche

cannabis crowd, the Dailybuds community allows member

in a specifc region to connect with local providers. Geo-

targeting allows relevant advertising to be served up based

on where you are located in the country. Just click on a ZIP

code or city and fnd a selection o caregivers or collectives

Then click again to fnd a menu to see what strains are instock, what specials are being oered and print out ree

money saving coupons. The site allows dispensary owners

the ability to upload their daily menus, photographs and

specials and they can communicate directly with their

patients on a daily basis through Dailybuds.

The Dailybuds community provides value or it s

members by giving them access to a special place online

where there can get the inormation they want, when they

want it directly rom other members in the community, whether they be in the same local area or anywhere they

    are connected.

We invite you to come and join us at

Tax Cannabis 2010:Majuana Lgalzaton n Calona Look Pomng

    ByMICHAEL DILLON

Once again, the state o Caliornia is paving the way on marijuana reorm in the United States.

Te ax & Regulate Cannabis 2010 initiative has collected enough signatures to qualiy or the

November 2010 ballot. Marijuana legaliation in Caliornia is one step closer to becoming a reality.

So, i passed, what exactly would this measure mean? Any CA

resident over the age o 21 could possess up to one ounce o marijuana

in public, could grow up to 25 square eet o cannabis, and possess all

that they grow within the connes o their home. And while people

could possess marijuana, it would still be illegal to distribute it. Te

new laws would essentially make it so marijuana is regulated in the

same way that the much more harmul drug alcohol is. Finally, we are

seeing some progress towards air regulation.

Some local governments may not agree with the new law, and they

would be ree to regulate the sale o marijuana however they see t.

Lets say the olks up in Ventura dont want marijuana sold in their

neighborhoods. Tey can make the decision to ban sales at the local

level. O course, they would be missing out on the tax revenues that

would be generated rom marijuana sales. ax revenues that could go

towards health care, public saety, schools, libraries, state parks, roads,

and transportation -- all areas which CA needs all the help we can get.

Another large benet o the reorm is that hemp -- according

to many sources, the largest untapped cash crop in the US -- would

be reed up or cultivation. Aside rom the dollars which would be

generated rom the sale o marijuana, hemp crops could bring in

millions more. Our dependence on other less sustainable resources

would be lessened and thousands o new jobs would be created.

Resources used or marijuana prosecutions would also be re-

    allocated or other projects.

Te state prisons would also see a large relie rom prisoners put

in the system or marijuana violations. ax payers wouldnt be paying

to house people or petty pot convictions. Police wouldnt be spending

time chasing aer stoners, and instead could ocus on catching the

real criminals committing murder, rape, and other serious crimes.

Close to 700,000 signatures have been gathered -- 434,000 were

needed to be eligible -- yet the initiative still has to be submitted to the

Caliornia Secretary o State or nal validation. Tis is will be done

some time beore the deadline o February. Assuming it gets the OK,

it is then up to the voters o the state on whether the initiative gets

passed. In a recent poll, 56% o registered voters in Caliornia were in

avor o marijuana legaliation. Compare that with the estimated 41%

    in avor nationwide.

Oaksterdam University is sponsoring and leading the ax

Cannabis 2010 initiative, and is paving the way or reasonable

marijuana rights. Oakland recently became the rst city in Americato tax medical marijuana. Te city was in desperate need o money,

and taxes rom marijuana sales has been a reliable source o revenues

    to help revitalie the city.

Nobody can deny that our state and country is still in a dire

nancial state. We need to do everything we can to get back on track.

Legaliing marijuana not only makes logical sense in terms o air

drug regulation, but it is also necessary to get us out o a nancial

debt that has no end in sight.

You can get involved by contributing, volunteering, and simply

    becoming inormed at taxcannabis.org.

Everyone knows that artists are a 420-riendly group. Historically speaking, artistshave always been at the hub o whats happening, as well as open to the mind-alteringeects o our beloved marijuana plant, (as well as many other tasty substances - butthats or another article).

Since the early history o art (or lie on earth or that matter), there is evidencethat smoking herb has enhanced our perception, and given the kind o vision or

enlightenment that elevates us as people into a space simply known as Art. Whetherit be paint on canvas, photos in a gallery, a dancing ballerina or a nely cooked mealwe all have a place in our minds and our hearts that allows us to escape and enjoy thener Arts during our existence here on earth.

Throughout history artists have drawn upon one another or inspiration, thusexpanding on and sort o parlaying the art orm rom one artist to another, one genreto another, and one generation to another. Paintings can be infuenced by song, songsinspired by peoples acts there are countless ways one creative medium can infuenceanother. Artists oten derive, or borrow rom one another and this is the case in thestory o two old riends, their shared passion or Art, and their love o a universalknown legend.

Robb Friedman and Josh Kaplan, have been riends or 25 years. Sincehigh school they have been involved in some art project or another, usually together.Decades o projects like logo design, window painting also led to client-driven, ne artpieces and even the design and production o movie sets. Theyre both utility artistsas well as ne artists.

Over the years both Robb and Josh ound their individual ortes and niches, but amongthe many that they share is their love or oil painting. As LA natives -- raised on a cultureo media, music, sports, and Art in general -- its no surprise their portolios are ull othese pop-culture icons.

One idol, in particular, hadserved as background music asthey worked on other projects, but never as a subject worthy othe oil painting treatment. Butnobody can deny Bob Marley, king o reggae, orever. Joshand Robb are huge Marleyans, and would usually listen

to him when collaborating overthe years. Separately, though, they re-discovered the Marleyinfuence and began to work onpieces in his honor. FriedmansMarley is a mixture o paintingand another expertise, graphicdesign. His use o imagery withquotations rom his subject, pulls you in and wraps you upin the memory o those words,or in this case Marleys lyrics.

His pieces are pop art at theirbest, and really put you in amoment.

Kaplans impression o Marley is totally dierent. Very representational with a strong senseo Impressionism. Joshs image -- while still graphic in nature -- has brilliant colors dancingthroughout the piece, vibrantly depicting Bobs energy. Josh depicts his subjects in a verycolorul way, while sustaining his classical style. With all the infuences, Josh said, ..Im surprised it took me this long to paint Bob.Robb said, It was a strange sense o timing. I was listening to Bob as I oten do whenpainting, and Kaplan called me to tell me he was getting very high on his new Marleypiece. I couldnt believe it, I told him I was doing one too, and it just hit us both. It was likeBob was infuencing both o us at the same time - or whatever reason. It was pretty cool.

As these two artists have remained close, they both continue to build their prospectiveclient lists. Some o them include Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, The Los Angeles Dodgers,

Justin Timberlake, Donnie Wahlberg, Jermaine Dupree, and many, many more. With the paintings these two riends and talented artists are producing, its no wonderthat the world o pop media, and the A-list o today have noticed both Friedmans andKaplans artwork. Robb and Josh both donate artwork yearly to dierent charities to giveback to their community. The two really enjoy meeting and working with other artists, rom all mediums. Both seem to have a true appreciation or Art as a whole, and the

relationship it has upon one another in this world - that interlinking chain between artistswhether theyre still here or not. This is a lie-long journey, Josh says, there is always something else to learn.Robb adds, Were not doing this to be rich or anything.. (Josh laughs out loud) Thatsor sure!!!. Its more or the LOVE! chimes Robb. Denitely or the love o Art, Josh adds.

Face it, theres a million strains (and stories) out there. Here, in a noble effort, wetry to separate the historical and genetic points of these strains from thetypicalcrazy, unsubstantiated rumors.

Inevitably a kid on some blog will claim to havethe original OG Kush motherin his parents basement; A 20-year-old college junior from Iowa swears that she can

grow 600 plants under a single 1000w light; Watering your garden with beer makes the

    buds fatter.

Weve read and heard a fraction of it all by now. So its with great skepticism that we

share with you news from the story mill of how strains are born (their provenance?).

This months topicTrainwreck.(I hope that somewhere in the mountains an elderly man with a cane and mischievous

gleam in his eye reads these and tells his faithful dog how silly we are all, as he

vaporizes the original Trainwreck strain that he created in his cabin circa 1950.)

At any rate, we pulled some quotes from

the web about how Trainwreck really

    came into being.

    1) Te original rainwreck was supposedly 1st grown inArcata, Cali. in the 60s. Story has it that there was a train

wreck that summer which more or less memorialied what

turned out to be a very potent and popular smoke. Sativadominant.

    2) Beserker is the guy who discovered/bred rainwreck.Steve uck is the guy that crossed it with an Aghani to

    produce a seed-line/woodhorse/meduser rainwreck.

    3) Te Arcata cut o rainwreck gets it name becauseit was grown, or the rst time, on a hillside that just so

happened to have a train wreck happen in the same area

    that summer

    4) rainwreck is an old hybrid (1970s) rom Humboldto lowland Tai, Mexican sativa, and a very solid and

    potent Aghani.

    5) W is basically a Tai low land sativa that got into themix up here back in the early 80s. Out doors its a huge

weeper creeper that takes up ONS o space and takes 9

months to come in. It original parents were brought back

rom Tailand by some vagabond wanting to reproduce

    Tai-stick phenotype.

Pick yur avrite and repeat it t yur riends.

    Heres what we do know:

rainwreck delivers an incredible, clear and psychedelic

high. Its special without ceiling properties make it one o

the most potent Sativas or the indoor grower. Combined

with a unique high, rainwreck has wonderul deep avors

o mint, pine, lemons and citrus ruits, which delight the

    palate and stimulate the senses.

rainwreck is a clone that has been passed around inNorthern Caliornia or about the last 20 years or more. It

is now exploding around the world as a clone.

Tis strong sativa really is a punch to the ace with a head-

concentrated high. On top o this, it doesnt leave the body

    heavy and slow.

At rst glance this bud doesnt look like a rock star, but you

will notice nice, long hairs that are covered in crystals.

Te sweet, skunky smell also stuns the nose. And the light

green colored leaves just makes it a great bud to gae.

Te researchers say they now have evidence that active

components o cannabis, may oer hope.

Its known that i you injure a nerve, the morphine

receptors in the spinal cord disappear and thats probably why

morphine isnt a very eective pain killer or such conditions

as shingles, people who have had an amputation or perhaps

i cancer has invaded the spinal cord, says Andrew Rice, a

senior lecturer in pain research at Londons Imperial College.

But what weve shown is that the cannabinoid receptors

do not disappear when you injure a nerve. So this could oer

a therapeutic advantage over morphine or treating such pain,

    he adds.

Cannabinoids are components o cannabis or compounds

that mimic cannabis, and discovering the complexities behind

how and why they can oer pain relie has been the ocus o

    various areas o research.

Rice says the signicance o his teams research is that they

mapped the cannabinoid receptors in the spinal cord and

showed that they are ound specically in areas concerned

    with pain processing.

Other researchers showed that i you inject cannabinoidcompounds in small doses in the spinal cord, you get pain

relie. And we showed how that eect is mediated, he

explains. In addition, a third group o people showed that

nerve cells in the spinal cord that are normally activated by

pain are damped down by small doses o cannabinoid in the

    spinal cord uid.

Te ndings were published in a past issue o Molecular

    and Cellular Neuroscience.

Rice says the task now is to ind out how to administ

the cannabinoids, but he cautions that the most amiliar smoking it is the last thing researchers would advise.

Cannabinoid compounds are among a variety o drug

that have been intensely looked at as researchers look o

alternatives to the remarkably ew pain relie options.

Researchers have spent the last 30 years trying t

understand the mechanism o pain, particularly in the sk

and spinal cord, and the massively complex array o chemica

that are involved in that process, Rice explains.

While people have generally tried to target each o thochemicals to develop pain killers, very ew approaches hav

been successul, and were still essentially le with the thre

very old, basic concepts in drugs: morphine, which has bee

with us or thousands o years, aspirin or acetaminophen

    he adds.

Dr. Kenneth Mackie, an associate proessor in anesthesiolog

and physiology at the University o Washington in Seattl

says there is indeed great concern in the medical communit

about the need to nd better pain relie or damaged nerve

but that progress is being made.

Its obviously a big problem or the people who have th

kind o pain and on the basic science side, its an area

intense investigation. Cannabinoids are just one option th

    people are looking at.

What is pH? Tis is a question that can make newgrowers scratch their heads and reach or the pipe. But its

not really all that complicated. Te pH describes the level o

alkalinity or acidity o a given thingin this case the liquid

nutrient solution you use to grow your plants.

    GROWER'S

    GROVE:The pH Balancing Act

The pH scale starts at zeroand rises to 14. A value of 7.0 isconsidered neutral, with valuesover 7.0 being alkaline and valuesbelow 7.0 being acidic.

Whatever nutrient solution youre using, its basically a

cocktail o various chemicals. hese chemicals can react to

each other in a process called covalent bonding, and orm new

chemicals that you dont want. You dont want them because

your plant cant use them. his process o covalent bonding is

largely dependent on the pH o the solution the chemicals are

suspended in (water, in this case).

With the chemicals being used in your average hydroponic

solution, a chemist would say that the optimum pH would

be 7.0, which is neutral. he reasoning behind this is that

in keeping the solution neutral, covalent bonding o th

constituent parts o your solution will be kept to a minimum

But since your plants like a dierent pH level or optimu

growth, you have to cater to your joy, lower the pH, and take t

slight loss o nutrient value. Fast growing leay plants general

like a lower pH in the range o 5.2 to 5.9. Fortunately, a low

pH will bond ewer nutrients o the type in your solution th

    will a higher pH.

I you let the pH value go beyond the optimum range

5.2 to 5.9, youre opening yoursel up to undesirable levels

nutritional deiciency and toxicity, both o which can serious

    impede your growth. Be vigilant.

he tweaking o the concentration o the nutrient solutio

at various growth periods urther enhances the nutrie

assimilation rate. he concentration o a solution is measur

    in parts per million (PPM).

You wouldnt normally have any nutrient solution eedin

a newly cut clone, so the PPM o your solution at this stag

isnt an issue. Young, established seedlings or rooted clone

however, are generally started at 500 to 600 PPM. his val

is increased to 800 to 900 PPM during the peak oliage grow

    A sure-fre way to keep

tabs on your pH is a

period. During the lowering period, the PPM is raised evenhigher to 1,000 PPM. hats a lot o nutrient, and its needed, every drop.

It is at the lowering time that your plant will need the mostresources. Ater the lowers have grown to buds, youll have tothink about lushing the chemicals rom your new creation. At this time, the plant still needs nutrients, but at a lowerconcentration.

It is recommended then to reduce the concentration to 400

to 500 PPM or a couple o days to leach out the nutrients thathave built up -- you dont want to end up smoking them.

It is at this point that some people like to starve their plantto stimulate the survival response o generating more naturaloils within the plant that will combat dehydration. hiscontrolled drought has been shown to increase the levels o oilin the plant, and thus the HC (the good stu ).

his general overview o the growing process gives youthe knowledge or more advanced decisions about the pH andconcentration (PPM) o your nutrient solution.

he optimum temperature or hydroponic solutions isgenerally said to be 75 F. It is at this temperature that mostelements are assimilated easily, and atmospheric oxygen ismost readily accepted into your nutrient solution.

    MeasuringpH and PPM

Measuring pH is relatively easy, and you have quite a ewchoices in terms o methods. he most inexpensive and low-tech method entails taking a sample rom your solution. It isput into a clean vial you get with the pH kit. You test or the

pH by putting a drop o the something-or-other liquid thatcame in the kit into the vial (not directly into the solution).he something-or-other makes the nutrient solution turncolor, usually shades o green or blue-green. his color is thencompared to a color chart that comes with the kit. he closestcolor indicates the pH o the solution.

he kits sell or about $5-$10. his low-tech solutionposes some obvious limitations, not the least o which is thediiculty in deciding which color is closest i youve been intothe ruits o your previous harvest.

he optimal method is a dead-on accurate method, and

involves buying a relatively inexpensive pH meter. he metertests the pH down to a tenth o a point, and has proven itselindispensable -- a good buy or about $60.

Another meter tests the PPM o the solution as a whole.heres no way around this one, people. I you want to controlthe PPM o your nutrient solution, you have to buy the meter.Prices range rom about $60 to $300. I youre only growinga one-shot crop or just a ew at a time, get the cheaper meteror mix the nutrients per gram according to the labeledinstructions. I youre going ull throttle and growing or allo your riends, spend a bit more and get the reliability thatcomes with a quality product.

Knowing what to add, and wheto add it, is paramount to yousuccess as a grower.

When the pH level is too high (alkaline), it can be lowere

with saltpeter, suluric acid or phosphorous. When the pH val

is too low, it can be raised with calcium carbonate, lime or potas

    Fertilizers andChemicals

Most ertiliers cause a pH change in the nutrient solutioAdding ertilier to the nutrient solution almost always resuin a more acidic pH. Adjust accordingly.

he proper way to handle all o these chemicals important. he irst rule is that you should be clear-headwhen handling. Another general rule is to use glass plastic, never metal. he nutrients will react with the veree elements in the metal and mess up your nutrient ratioGlass or plastic doesnt have that problem, so get your bu

to the kitchen section o the nearest department store ir

Never add the acid directly to the vat o nutrient. Fillsmall glass container with the nutrient to be balanced and ada ew drops o the necessary chemical. Stir it in well and adsmall amounts at a time to the large vat o nutrient until tproper pH balance is achieved. hats all there is to it. Noyoure in business.

As time goes on, the amount o salts produced by thbreakdown o ertiliers in the medium causes it to becomincreasingly acidic.

Eventually, the concentration o these salts in the mediu

will stunt the plant and cause browning out o the oliagAlso, as the plant gets older its roots become less eective bringing ood to the leaves. o avoid the accumulation o thesalts in your medium and to ensure that your plant is gettinall o the ood it needs, be sure to lush your system with cleapH balanced water every couple o weeks. Do this in lieu that cycles eeding.

heres always been a big debate over when to adjuyour pHbeore and ater you add nutrients to the water,

just ater. We talked to an expert, and she said to do bothe reasoning or doing both is that water is rarely deaon neutral. Its either acidic or alkaline, depending on yo

region. Our chemist said that the way the proessionado it is to render the water neutral irst (pH o 7.0). Yowould then add your nutrients to that chemically neutrsolution and adjust to the desired range within 5.2 to 5.9 p

MARIJUANA&The back-and-forth of medical marijuana dispensaries, legal interpretations and, most

prevalent, the politics in Los Angeles can be dizzying. The past two years has shown

how bitter the debate can be.

The dispensaries have been asking for rules of engagement so they could stay within

the spirit of Prop 215 (55.6% of the vote in 1996) and operate legally in LA County and

the city of Los Angeles. (Perhaps they should have self-policed much earlier to get apolitical upper hand?)

Teres quite a bit at stake: sae access, conusing and

conicting laws and, o course, money (or revenue, depending

    who is speaking).

At present, a Field Poll shows 60% o LA County voters and

56% statewide avor legaliing -- and taxing -- marijuana. Gov.

Arnold Schwarenegger is on the record as being willing to

explore legaliation. Sec. or State Jerry Brown has posted online

his rules that will keep dispensaries within his interpretation ostate law.

Council enacted a moratorium on new dispensary

registration in 2007 -- which promptly led to the prolieration

o dispensaries, due to the lack o guidance or oversight rom

Council. Te commonly quoted number o dispensaries, at

present, is 545, but estimates put the numbers somewhere

    between 1000 and 1600.

It appears that no matter what LA City Council does on Jan.

13 at its special hearing to decide about oning regulations,

this matter will be settled in the courts -- especially since

Council had its moratorium invalidated by a Superior Courtjudge in October.

Te key points o the proposed regulations (at press time)

are limiting the number o dispensaries to 186 (with an

ultimate goal o 70) and having all dispensaries 1,000 eet rom

homes, schools, churches or parks (though Councilman Reyes

says that the residential stipulation is unlikely to survive). A

revision being discussed is to allow each council district to

lower the distance between dispensaries to as 500-oot buer

rom schools and each other. According to the LA imes:

With a 500-oot setback rom residences, 132 would have to

move. Another point raised by a couple o Council members

thats worth bearing out: the contraction o dispensaries will

not decrease demand. As is, the regulations area de acto

elimination o all dispensaries in LA.

Below, weve put together a quick where they stand guide

to LA City Council members and other political players.

COUNCIL MEMBERSDistrict 1 - Ed Reyes, chair o the Planning and Land UseManagement Committee: Accused the city attorneys ofce

o oering a political point o view that has nothing to do

with objective advice regarding oning or legality o medical

marijuana dispensaries, rather than a legal ramework.

Accusations o his bottling up regulation persist. Seems to

be in avor o a looser oning interpretation and less severe

    restriction o dispensaries.

District 2 - Paul Krekorian: (newly elected in Nov 2009; nodata)

District 3 - Dennis P. zine: Seem to agree with taxation odispensaries. Suggested capping number o dispensaries at 186.

On capping the number at 70: I dont think that is air to

those that opened up legally. I think that we should hold true

to those that ollowed the rule. (rom LA)

District 4 - om LaBonge: I think its real important thatwhoever is established or challenged in the needs o medical

needs are met in the right and appropriate way. Seems to avor

    the 186 number.

District 5 - Paul Koret: Doing this (restrictive oning)without any kind o a study I think is cray. At least give us

the benet o a reality check. I Im wrong, Im wrong, but have

sta take a couple weeks and actually study this. I think youll

nd there are big chunks o the city where we absolutely cannot

locate a single dispensary. (rom LA Independent) Koret is

viewd by opponents as a Council member who wants the most

    lax restrictions.

District 6 - ony Cardenas: Voted or stricter regulations orst dra.

District 7 - Richard Alarcon: supports the 1,000 eet romschools/parks/libraries (known as sensitive uses) and 500-eet

rom residences. However, did read into the record I dont

have a ear o marijuana being a danger to society ... physically

    or mentally.

District 8 - Bernard Parks: commenting on NPR aboutorcing dispensaries away rom residential areas: You move

everything into the industrial area, well, where is the industrial

area? Te poor and the east side o the city o Los Angeles.

District 9 - Jan Perry: It is her proposal to extend the buerone to 1000 eet or residences as well as sensitive use areas.

    District 10 - Herb J. Wesson, Jr.:

District 11 - Bill Rosendahl: I dont think weve done enough(research) to have this make sense to me. Votes to delay action

until Jan 2010. He seems to agree with taxation o dispensaries.

District 12 - Greig Smith: Was the lone nay vote thatasked DEA to respect the compassionate use laws o states,

including returning any assets seied rom medical marijuana

    dispensaries (Senate Joint Resolution 20).

District 13 - Eric Garcetti: Seems in avor o less stringentregulation, but does seek to limit dispensaries to between 70-

    100. Added elegant language to the proposal that leaves

room or judicial interpretation o how cash changes hands,

    should it go to court.

District 14 - Jose Huiar: consistently sides with medicalmarijuana opponents during Council meetings, such as Perry.

Worked to lengthen the buer one. Suggested a cap o 70

    dispensaries.

District 15 - Janice Hahn: Proposed a tax on dispensariin July 2009. She has also acknowledged that taxation len

    legitimacy.

    KEY PLAYERS

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R): Stated in May 20that he was willing to discuss legaliation o Caliornia marijuan

CA Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown (D): Has posted regulationor dispensary owners on his ofces ofcial website as well as interpretation o the law. However, he also said: Unortunate

in some communities, Los Angeles in particular, theres a lot

exploitation and just getting into the drug business and dop

business and theyre not really in the medical business.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa: Until recently had no pubstance on medical marijuana. An LA Weekly article prompte

him to oppose illegal marijuana sales. I think the distri

attorney and what my attorneys tell me is the same thin

Tat the sale o marijuana is illegal. He added, Anything th

comes to me [or signature] must be clear that these are legoperations. O note: not one email was sent to ormer LAP

Chie William Bratton about marijuana dispensaries and an

purported crime near them (LA Weekly).

LA County District Attorney Steve Cooley: roan NPR transcript: Te vast, vast, vast majority, about 10

percent o dispensaries in Los Angeles County and the city, a

operating illegally. So we are going to, over time, eradicate th

illegal sales o marijuana that are occurring in dispensaries.

LA City Attorney Carmen Trutanich: Supported medicmarijuana during the campaign; however, once elected, h

ipped and is ardently pursuing the eradication o dispensari

rom Los Angeles. Closely tied to Cooley, politically.

No matter what is in the nal version o the ordinance, the

are going to be a lot o patients and dispensaries unhappy, an

    Prohibition...

    goes beyond the

    bounds of reason in

    that it attempts to

    control a mans

    appetite by legislation

    and makes a crime out

    of things that are not

    crimes. A prohibition

law strikes a blow atthe very principles upon

    which our government

    was founded.

In the early days of the atomobile development there was

an argment over how the thing shold look.

Electric, steam and gasoline powered models were being

offered by many different manfactrers. Eventally, the

gasoline powered internal combstion engine (aka ICE) won

ot and became the driving force for the modern world.

Fast forward to this years Los Angeles Ato show. The

ICE, and its life partner, carbon-rich gasoline, are blamed foreverything from cancer, to terrorism, to the End Times. The

ICE, at least as far as basic transportation is concerned, is on

    its way ot.

It seems every manfactrer has a slightly different take

on what technology is going to take hold, and the battle to

develop the technology that drives the world is on once again.

Here is a basic rundown of the major players in the ght...

    the traditional hybrid

This is the crrent champion of the alternative layot.

The Toyota Pris broght the concept of new drive trains tothe pblic. Now, thogh; the design is starting to look as old

    school as an original iPod.

unveiled at the LA Ato Show, the Volkswagen up! Lite

marks a new direction to the traditional hybrid. From an engine

perspective isnt really all that revoltionary. A .8 liter (yes,

as in less than one) two cylinder trbo diesel engine mates p

with an electric nit to drive the wheels. The impressive stff

really starts in the body, where, throgh the extensive se of

some carbon ber and aluminum, weighs around 1,500 lbs --

or abot half as mch as a BMW Mini Cooper. Less weight

on the car, and a really aerodynamic body, mean it takes less

power for the car to move. This is how the up! Lite can getaway with having its anemic 65 HP engine.

The probable ftre of its sccess? Lightweight,

aerodynamic design is a given, and this was a good stdy for

VW. Having only 65 horses, thogh, means it is next to seless

for transportation in the uS. At 70 mpg, the cost in drivability

doesnt really pay ot. This looks to be the limits of what this

    form of Hybrid can do.

    full electric vehicle

Many have billed the EV as the way of the ftre. Favored

by the nerdiest of the green-car enthsiasts, the EV is one of

the most ambitios movements in the history of the horseless

carriage. The problems here come when an owner needs to

recharge a cars batteries. Basically, it takes a long time. And

the infrastrctre needed in order to provide electricity for a

lot of cars is a massive ndertaking. It has taken s decades todevelop the methods for getting gasoline into the tank cheaply

and effectively. Electricity is a whole new animal and the

strategy hasnt been qite cracked yet.

The probable ftre of its sccess? Imagine if there were a

tiny fraction of the gas stations on the road, with almost none

outside of the city, and it took hours instead of minutes to ll

    p. Some people can -- and do -- plan ahead. They charge their

cars at home every night, then plan their chores according to

where recharging stations are, and (this is the important part)

dont drive where there arent. As the world crrently is, this

is a tech for enthsiasts who are willing to pt p with the

    inherent early-adopter problems.

Cars to drive if youre worried about the ICE melting the ice.

    plug-in hybrids

Plg-in Hybrids like Chevrolets soon-to-go-on-sale Volt

are an interesting way to approach the problems broght p by

an all-electric motor. The car is essentially an electric vehicle,

bt, nlike normal EVs, the plg-in hybrid comes with a small

gasoline engine that serves as a generator to recharge the

batteries. So an owner can drive arond and, when it rns ot

of electricity, jst keep on going while the gasoline motor keepsthe car jiced.

The probable ftre of its sccess? Very likely, this looks to

be the next step for cars. The plg-in hybrids onboard gasoline

power plant means owners can have an electric vehicle that

doesnt reqire the owner to deal with the headaches that come

    with owning an all-electric car.

    hydrogen fuel cell

Cars like Hondas FCX Clarity operate on the same princip

as the plg in hybrid. under the skin, the FCX Clarity is real

an EV with an onboard power plant, bt instead of sing

low tech gasoline engine, the FCX Clarity ses a relative

clean hydrogen fel cell to create its electricity. Emission

How abot pre water? Thats what spits ot the tail pip

(metaphorically). The probable ftre of its sccess? It really jst depend

Hydrogen fel cells also reqire a new infrastrctre fo

delivering hydrogen to drivers in place of gasoline. Thog

delivering hydrogen seems a little simpler than electricit

Mostly becase hydrogen wont case rolling blackots

everyone rells at the same time.

    By Josh Kaplan

Ever so oten there comes a band that defes being lumped in with the others.

They mystiy you musically, they inspire you creatively, and sometimes they

    continue to keep you guessing.

The John Butler Trio has been doing all three since I saw them in 2007 at the

Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Easily convinced to go, I was

flled in about the bands inrequent shows in the United States.

Huge in their native Australia, they are o the map (so-to-speak) when it

comes to mainstream popularity here, playing very limited, small theaters

instead o massive venues and estivals back home.

The only comparison I had was to their 2002 tour mates the Dave Matthews Band. And i you like DMB

as I do, you should see JBT. They are uniquely dierent, yet as talented - i you can believe that?

John Butler Trio plays a unique blend o eclectic roots, with the heart o a good jam-based rock band.

Their individual musicianship is at such a high level -- especially (now ormer) drummer MichaelBarker -- that I ound mysel shaking my head, ringing on sheer disbelie as to what I was seeing and

    hearing.

To my urther shock, while researching this article, I ound that John Butler has amicably parted ways

with his old band mates purely to remain artistically resh. This is the action o a confdent artist.

Lets trust the act that such a gutsy and courageous move will only have a positive outcome. And with

the promise o change comes something new, and hopeully great? Lets see what the New Year brings?

O the only fve dates chosen by JBT in the U.S., two are in Kush readershometowns. Peep the trio 2/16/2010 at The Fox Theater in Boulder Colorado,

and 2/18/2010 when they roll into Los Angeles or a heady night at the very tight

    Troubadour.

I you like tasty jams and o the chart musicianship, check out these shows -

    you wont be sorry.
