Key concepts Local issues -- The smaller, sentence-

level issues within an essay such as grammar, sentence building, spelling and formatting.

  Editing -- This is the step AFTER revision;

it involves re-thinking smaller, sentence-level issues within an essay such as grammar, sentence building, spelling and formatting. These are often called local issues.

Key concepts Final draft -- This is your final version of your

autobiography, which you have carefully checked for organization, paragraph development, a clear thesis statement and grammar issues. All sentence-level and word-level editing has been completed and the essay is in the correct format. The final draft represents your absolute best effort at fulfilling the autobiography assignment. It will be graded by your instructor.

Key concepts Sentence-level editing -- The stage of

checking your essay for possible problems within sentences like comma splices, fragments and fused (run-on) sentences.

Word-level editing -- The stage of checking your essay for possible problems with word usage, misspelled words or unnecessary repetition of words.

Key concepts Format -- The way your essay looks on the page itself.

Different types of writing use different kinds of formatting. Think about how articles appear in your favorite magazines or local newspaper (narrow columns of text, etc.).

"Formal" formatting -- Includes double spacing all

pages of text, making sure that paragraphs are indented 5 spaces and that your name, course and section number appear at the beginning of an essay.

Key concepts Double spacing –- Using the double space function in

Word to insert a blank line between each line of text. Never use enter to double space!

Indent –- Number of spaces from the left hand margin

where a line of text begins.

Heading – Where your name, course and section number

appear at the beginning of an essay.

Unit 9 Project – Final Draft Project Description: Imagine that you have completed

your program at Kaplan University and been offered your dream job! The company or organization you will be working for wants to issue a press release announcing that you are joining them and in what capacity. In order to do so, they need an autobiographical statement from you.

Your autobiography should include:

Page 11: KU121- Unit 9 Preparing Final Projects. Tonight’s lecture Key Concepts Completing your final draft Editing your essay

Unit 9 Project – Final Draft One paragraph that identifies who you are, where you

live, the company or organization that has hired you, and your new job title.

One paragraph that gives professional details about you and your life – your age, family, hobbies, etc. (NOTE: this is a professional biography so you should limit personal details to what is appropriate).

One paragraph that talks about your education. You should include high school or your GED, any previous college experience, and your Kaplan program.

Unit 9 Project – Final Draft One paragraph that details professional experiences,

honors and awards, or other related details. One concluding paragraph hat reinforces where you will

be working, your job title, and what you will be doing. Because your autobiography will appear in the company

newsletter and in local newspapers, it should be written in third person (no I or you), should use concrete nouns, descriptive adjectives, and active verbs, should include effective transitions between paragraphs, and should be relatively error free.
