Tone- the emotion or mood of the author’s written voice

subjective tone words: Admiring Angry Bitter Humorous Joyful Serious timid

objective tone words: Factual Matter-of-fact straightforward

Purpose-the reason the author writes about a topic.

The 3 general purposes are:

Inform- author shares knowledge and information

Persuade- tries to bring the reader into agreement with his or her view of the topic.

Entertain- author sets out to captivate or interest the audience.

Primary purpose- the author’s main reason for writing the passage.

  Verbal irony-occurs when the author’s

words state one thing but imply the opposite.

Situational irony-occurs when the events of a situation differ from what is expected.

Inference or conclusion-is an idea that is suggested by the facts or details in a passage.

Valid inference- is a logical conclusion based on evidence.

Invalid conclusion- is a false inference that is not based on the details or facts in the text or on reasonable thinking.

This week, we will have a discussion that really allows us to identify tone and engage in our learning community. The first person who posts has a lot of power in this discussion because he or she will set up the direction we take.

1. Choose a passage you have read that has a clear tone to be inferred or simply write a passage of your own that demonstrates tone.

  2. Respond to at least two classmates’ postings by

identifying purpose, tone, and a valid inference based on what your classmates have posted. If you are have difficulty identifying purpose, tone, and valid inference, just tell your learning community why you are finding this difficult and we will pitch in to help.

Folks, even if you have only one dollar in your pocket, you can drive the car of your dreams today! One dollar gets you into any of our late model vehicles, and your job is your credit.   Example response: The purpose of this passage is in your face! These

advertisers want you to buy a car and are ready to get you deeper in debt to do it. The tone is encouraging and enthusiastic, but a valid inference is that if the company is willing to look past your credit history, it also doesn’t take your financial wellbeing seriously. The company wants you in a car because they will get all the payments they can out of you; if you stop paying, they will be just as happy to pick up the car.

As promised, we will become Tone Detectives! On the next slide I have a list of statements and tones. Each statement expresses a specific tone. It is up to you to identify the tone of each statement.

When the statement is presented to you: Choose the tone you feel best expresses the

statement. Type in your answer.

Be sure to pause upon my cue, to discuss the clues that led you to solve the tone mysteries.

1. It is with sorrow that I must submit my resignation. 2. The best days were growing up on the farm before life became so fast-

paced.3. It is so good to see you again after such a long time. How is your

wonderful family?4. Manny shoots for the basket at an awkward angle. He hesitates. The

ball is knocked out of his hand. The lost points may have just caused his team the win.

5. Animals can be divided into three groups based on the way they maintain body temperature.

6. A quiet yet thrilling feeling of peace swept over her. Her children were healthy, she was successful in her job, and she was in love with her husband. It seemed she had all a person could want.

7. It isn’t enough to say you are sorry after years of doing wrong. You just can’t say you are sorry! How dare you think you can! Don’t expect forgiveness, either!

8. It is with pleasure and pride that I offer this recommendation on behalf of Kareem Smith. He is hardworking, intelligent, and honest.

9. Who broke the vase in the foyer? When I find out who did it, that person is going to be so sorry. Do you know how much that vase cost?

10. I am the best there is, and don’t you forget it. There is no one who beats me.
