Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) 2019 Call for Applications Not Funded, Sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, $291,732 (February 8, 2019 - April 30, 2019). We assembled an interdisciplinary research team to examine behavioral health care under the IRL theme of clinical practice, social services, and health. We proposed to systematically evaluate the Rural East Texas Health Network (RETHN) and its effect on the quality of mental health care delivery. Kristin Wallace (social work), Ryan Phelps (economics), and Anne Bondesen (Burke community partner) collaborated to develop a research proposal titled: Facilitating a Community Response to Rural Mental Health Care Delivery. We completed rigorous requirements including a project summary, individual and team research essays, a budget narrative, individual biographical sketches, and a collaboration statement. Through the support of the SFASU Office of Research and Graduate Studies, the application was submitted to the Foundation on 3-13-19. We received notification that our proposal was not accepted at the end of April 2019. We enjoyed the collaboration and the challenge of formulating this research project.

Cordova, W. (Principal), Bailey-Wallace, K. (Co-Principal)

Jardins Project Funded & Sponsored by Student Affairs, SFASU, $500 (December 1, 2015 - April 20, 2016). The project was to determine if growing vegetables in one large neighborhood assisted families with access to healthy foods and choices. The other benefit of this research was for the purpose of exposing students to community and cultural aspects. Students engaged one predominantly Hispanic neighborhood and went door-to-door with faculty and an indigenous leader in the community, to inform the residents of their project and identify those interested. Seven gardens were planted in collaboration with residents and families that wished to sponsor these gardens for the neighborhood. Students planted small gardens to include vegetables of the family’s choice by following the instructions of the certified registered Permaculturalist and other community gardening experts. Students visited the neighborhood during class time and students had a schedule on a weekly basis to work in the community and gardens under the supervision of the community gardener representative, faculty, and Permaculturalist.
