e sister of Sunshine stabbing victim Fiona Warzywoda still breaks down every day when she remembers Fiona is gone.
Jolene Warzywoda will honour her sisters life on the anniversary of her death a year ago by holding a community vigil in Sunshine on ursday.
It feels like someone elses life. I cant get over the fact my big sister is gone, the Bendigo woman says. I was pregnant at the time and I gave birth to my little girl at seven months
Vigil to honour stab victim from the stress of it all. Fiona, a Melton West mother of four, was allegedly stabbed by her de facto partner of 18 years, Craig McDermott, on April 16 last year, just hours aer the pair le Sunshine Magistrates Court over an intervention order hearing.
e incident happened at a busy Sunshine shopping strip in broad daylight.
Mr McDermott has been ordered to stand trial on October 19 this year, and will appear in court again on April 23 for a further directions hearing.
Last year, Sunshine Magistrates Court
received a staggering 3041 applications for family violence intervention orders more than quadruple the number for matters outside the home.
Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal that 2671 new family violence intervention orders were sought last year, with 313 heard in October alone.
Jolene says she doesnt want her sister to be another victim that just doesnt matter.
I dont ever want her to be swept under the rug or forgotten. is has rattled so many people, most of all her poor children, she says.
I never knew how many women die like this, like my sister did. Its shocking, disgusting and needs to stop.
Hampshire Road, where Fiona was killed, will be closed as people gather to light candles and carry posters reading no more violence and no more murder.
Some of Fionas family and friends and a White Ribbon representative will speak at the memorial, at the corner of Hampshire and Devonshire roads, from 6.30pm.

Taylors Lakes Secondary College students had a ball when legendary Socceroo Harry Kewell helped them in a training session.
Six of the schools sports captains were given the chance to work with Kewell as part of their studies. Year 12 sports captain Stefania Valerio said she loved the world game. Its a huge passion of mine, and to share that passion and have Harry Kewell here is very exciting.
Soccer is a big part of the schools culture, with about 130 students enrolled in its academy program.
Student leadership co-ordinator Chris Greechan said the soccer academy ran in place of physical education classes in years 7 to 9.
Our academy focuses on improving playing abilities and also takes on a coaching avour towards years 11 and 12, Mr Greechan said.
Stefania said she enjoyed soccers tness and social benets. Its a team environment and Ive met heaps of different people from different backgrounds.
The school is training male and female squads to compete in Julys Kanga Cup competition in Canberra. Its the third year the school will have taken part in the competition, which will have 275 teams of 4200 players from Australia and overseas meeting for a week of football, culture, fun and friendship.

e family of a deceased man exposed to asbestos while playing behind the notorious Wunderlich factory in Sunshine North as a child has been awarded close to half a million dollars in damages.
In the rst verdict on an asbestosis legal claim in Victoria for a decade, the wife and immediate family of former Sunshine North resident Marian Ciopicz received $467,000.
A Victorian Supreme Court jury found on April 2 that the owner and operator of the former Wunderlich factory, Seltsam Pty Ltd, had negligently allowed Marian Copiczs exposure to asbestos dust and bres.
e father-of-three lost his two-year battle with the lung disease asbestosis in October last year.
Carolyn Ciopicz said her husband, 69, would be alive if it werent for the factory.
Wunderlich let little children use its toxic dump as a playground, she said. at is unbelievable. And so is the fact that they forced us to trial to get justice for Marian.
Mr Ciopicz was exposed to asbestos from the ages of eight to 28, from the late 1950s to the early 70s, the court heard.
In a signed statement made before his death, Mr Ciopicz described how he, his brother and friends would innocently play in the waste.
We built cubby houses out of asbestos cement sheets, he said. Sometimes we dug tunnels through the waste, other times we dug trenches with boards we found lying around and then piled waste on top of the boards.
We threw handfuls of waste at each other and they exploded on impact. When playing there it sometimes felt like we were in a snow storm. e air was full of white or gray dust.
His family lived in Sandford Avenue, about 600 metres from the factory, and he walked past the McIntyre Road site on the way to school.
He later worked next door at the Taubmans paint factory where asbestos dust from Wunderlich would be blown in.
Slater and Gordon lawyer Michael Magazanik said the claim was strong, as the dangers of asbestos had been known since the 1890s.
Its disappointing the defendant didnt say, We stued up, were sorry, we should never have done that. Hopefully the company has learned a lesson, Mr Magazanik said.
As well as the asbestos dump at the back, there was evidence that the factory was using a fan to blast waste asbestos dust into the air above the factory, which was then blown all over the place.
e Wunderlich factory has le a tragic legacy in Sunshine North. Seltsam can no longer avoid responsibility for its behaviour.

Andrews says the production the companys rst for the year is an oce comedy about lowly worker Keith and the secrets that are revealed in the oce aer dark.
e original story came from a friend of mine, who would regularly tell me stories about his oce work. I thought some of the stories were funny enough for a play, Andrews says.
e plot focuses on how Keith cant turn on
a building alarm because a bird got in and ew around.
e farces just multiply from that point and Keiths evening goes from bad to simply ridiculous, Andrews says.
e play is directed by Sunshine North resident Alan Barrett, who says that what it lacks in oce experience, the show makes up for in comedy. Its great to be back on the stage again. e audience will be laughing in the aisles.

Melton polices Inspector Kathryn Rudkins says people can contact her or she will call a public meeting in response to residents calls to have the Caroline Springs police station manned 24 hours a day.
Inspector Rudkins said, Id rather the people of Caroline Springs understand it from the police perspective and have the opportunity to ask questions and be listened to.

He said residents were worried for their safety, especially with a high number of reported break-ins and home burglaries.

Top cop rejects 24/7 station bid
Friends of Kororoit Creeks work over many years has been sowing the seeds of renewal and now the group has been rewarded with funding for 800 new plants.
e 50-member group received a $3500 Healthy Waterways community grant from Melbourne Water and is already putting it to good use at the spot where the Kororoit and Jones creeks meet.
e grant supports a wider project to rejuvenate the waterways whose banks are overgrown with weeds and lack native vegetation.
Volunteer and Deer Park resident Karin Saliba says the group is keen to green the west. Weve been brainstorming how we could make the area more self-sustainable and make it a better habitat for the local wildlife, Ms Saliba said.
e trees around there arent native, so were planting what shouldve been there originally
and restoring the creek to its natural beauty. e creek runs along a bike path so it also makes the area more user-friendly, she said.
Ms Saliba says she hopes the project will lead to more revegetation at the site and promote the Friends groups hard work.
A lot of us in the group are getting older. Im 61 and still t and able, but theres others into their 90s. We hope some young people will get onboard to make our area beautiful.
e Sunshine Heights Primary School parents gardening group, known as the Sunny Bees, has received a $4125 grant from the same funding pool. e funds will go towards a 500-plant regeneration project at the Sunshine Heights school boundary next to Kororoit Creek. e project is also aimed at teaching the pupils about the creek environment and the indigenous vegetation that once ourished there.

Council sees light on savings Brimbank council is upgrading 11,500 street lights with LED globes as part of a program to save more than $500,000 in electricity and maintenance bills each year. A Sunshine West resident is hopeful a cruisy weekend bike ride could kickstart a regular cycling club for Brimbank women.
Two days ago, eight female cyclists set out on a 30-kilometre ride from Buckingham Reserve in Sunshine to Williamstown as part of e Womens Ride.
e ride, a Cycling Victoria initiative, was the rst mass participation riding event in Victoria just for women.
e Brimbank leg, which took about three hours, was one of more than 50 rides taking place across the state.
Event organiser and Sunshine West mother Marina Bear said the ride had a social focus, with the cyclists stopping o for a coee on the way.
Ms Bear hopes to establish a weekly or fortnightly cycling group.
I try to ride regularly, but Ive struggled to nd a group to go with, she said. Im not thrilled to ride on my own. Its always safer to go with a friend.

A former Sunshine North resident says he feels let down and as if his family have been poisoned because they lived near the controversial former Wunderlich factory.
Tony, who declined to give his last name, grew up just 500 metres from the factory and says authorities have not done enough to explore what other health conditions exposure to asbestos may cause. e Wunderlich factory, formerly owned by CSR and James Hardie, manufactured asbestos sheeting for 50 years up until the early 1980s.

EPA chief executive ocer Nial Finegan said results from the second round of sampling would be explained to residents once they were in.
Fiy Sunshine North properties have been tested for asbestos following last years discovery of a cancer cluster surrounding the former asbestos factory. Results from 38 of the properties indicated a very low risk to householders, a state government update posted on the Brimbank council website last month stated. Dust samples were taken from attics, soil samples were taken from gardens,
auto-immune diseases, Tony said. I cant believe its genetic when just my immediate family who lived there have been aected. ere were plenty of other contaminates oating around, he said.
It [asbestos] can cause much more than just lung cancer. Even if you get a couple of grains in your system, it changes your DNA.
e Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has conrmed it is waiting on results of further asbestos sampling.

Increased university fees and HECS debts may not be necessary if new Victoria University research into a fairer higher education model is tied to legislation.
VU vice-chancellor and president Peter Dawkins and VU Centre of Policy Studies senior research fellow Janine Dixon have released a paper detailing a third way for higher education policy.
Professor Dawkins said their taper model included price exibility and a better equity package while still being driven by demand.
Neither full fee deregulation, nor returning to a more regulated model with tight control over fees and possible reversion to more regulation of student numbers would serve us well, he said.
e proposed model would see government giving less money to universities if they raised
their fees above a threshold level, determined by a taper rate starting at 20 per cent.

Noisy neighbours, grati, discarded syringes and littering are among pet peeves of Brimbank residents, while animal annoyances are also driving residents barking mad.
Residents made almost 55,000 service requests (aka complaints) to the Brimbank council between 2010-14 relating to noisy neighbours, property being defaced by grati, dumped rubbish, discarded syringes, nuisance pets (including barking dogs, snakes, and roaming animals), and other wildlife problems.
A total 3278 service requests have been lodged this year alone, with 1528 relating to pets and other animals.
City development director Stuart Menzies said Brimbank council employed a range of proactive and reactive services to stem the tide of service requests and complaints.
Mr Menzies said that as well as a household drop-o facility, the council had a rapid response unit to pick up dumped rubbish, carry out local clean-ups and remove dumped syringes found on council-managed land within an hour of a report.
He said the council also removed grati from its properties and regularly oered redeemable vouchers for grati removal supplies for residents needing to remove grati from private properties.
We continue to proactively remove grati from 30 identied priority sites across the municipality, with inspection and removal on a fortnightly and, in some cases, a weekly basis, he said. ese sites are throughout
the municipality and change continually depending on the demand.
In some cases, particularly regarding pets and noise complaints, residents have been slapped with nes or taken to court if they continue to out laws and restrictions.
Last year, the council issued 1052 nes as a result of residents complaints, while court action was taken in relation to 127 matters, not including parking infringements.
Residents can report dumped rubbish, fallen trees, grati and other concerns, and can send pictures through the My Brimbank app, which can be downloaded on the iTunes app store or Google play store, or they can call customer service on 9249 4000.

e Brimbank highway patrol had a busy Easter weekend with almost 500 drivers nabbed for various oences.
Operation Crossroads ran across the state during the ve-day holiday period, with 486 motorists booked for 493 oences in Brimbank alone.
Seven drink-drivers were among those caught. Other serious oences included speeding, using a mobile phone and travelling without a seat belt.
Police placed a road safety electronic message on Ballarat Road at Albion, which read, Dont be a bunny, speed aint funny.
e highway patrols Sergeant Bill Joannidis said one P-plater driver was travelling so fast past the message that he was unable to read it on Monday.
e 19-year-old Caroline Springs man was clocked travelling at 189km/h in an 80km/h zone on Ballarat Road about 11.35pm. Police intercepted the green Mitsubishi Magna and immediately impounded it under hoon legislation. e driver is expected to be charged on summons with speeding and dangerous driving and could be without a licence for at least 12 months.
A second P-plater was also nabbed doing 130km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Calder Freeway at Keilor Park just aer midnight on Monday. e 22-year-old Preston man had his red Holden Cruz impounded for 30 days and is expected to be charged on summons.

Parents such as Bacchus Marshs Steph Davidson are preparing to put their babies unused disposable nappies to good use by donating them to e Nappy Collective.
e Nappy Collective collects leover unused disposable nappies from towns all across Australia and redistributes them to organisations that support families in need.
Ms Davidson knows well how quickly her 11-month-old son William grows out of his nappies and jumped at the opportunity to donate unused ones.
It makes me feel a lot better to give them to someone whos going to need them rather than contributing to landll, she said.
Ms Davidson, who is overcoming postnatal depression, said it was vital to support those in need, especially parents in crisis situations.
Weve never been in need of nappies, but I have had issues where I needed help, she said. eres always people out there who will need support and this is one less thing they have to worry about.
e Nappy Collective is an initiative run by volunteers including founder Sandra Jacobs, who says incredible community engagement has helped the initiative grow.

Long-time Sunshine resident Des Johnson is the man behind an exhibition open at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre in Deer Park until May 9.
Johnsons love for photography began as a child but he began taking his art more seriously in the 1980s aer he was diagnosed with heart problems.
e doctor at the Footscray hospital told me I needed to exercise, walk more, so I bought a camera and started photographing and walking, Johnson says.
His collection of more than 5000 photos is of considerable local signicance. Over the years, he has captured the faces of Sunshine through times of great change.
Johnsons favourite photo was taken early in the 1990s at Kororoit Creek, Deer Park. He donated this photo to the Footscray hospital.
I dont ever want my photographs sold or involved with money. Art is about so much more than that, he says.
e exhibition is one of Brimbank councils contributions to Heritage Week, which continues until Sunday.

Sunshine mayor Ian Mill has hit back at criticism of his trip to a peace conference in Japan in August. Cr Con McKay called the trip to the First World conference of Mayors for Peace through inter-city solidarity the most preposterous proposal ever contemplated by any Sunshine council. In a prepared statement, Cr Mill said: e cause is extremely worthy and the City of Sunshine as a nuclear-free city should be seen to be in support.

Twenty-four clubs owe the council almost $85,000 in overdue ground rental or loan repayments. Some of the debts date back more than two years. e largest debtor is the Keilor Sports Club, which owes $14,117.60.

e spacious grounds of Sunshine RSL sub-branch were crowded with memories as members laid out rows of small crosses commemorating men and women who died for their country. More than 350 crosses stood in ranks on either side of the sub-branch cenotaph for Sundays memorial service held ahead of Anzac Day next Monday. Many of the crosses were made by World War II veteran, now sub-branch pensions ocer Bill Clayton.

A Proud Community Growing Together
Melton City Council takes great pride in recognising and rewarding the valuable contribution our local volunteers make to our fast growing, vibrant community.
Each year, on Australia Day, Council announces the winners of our Community Achievement Awards, public acknowledgement of the great work individuals and groups do to create a safe and prosperous community for all of us to enjoy. Two years ago, I was very pleased to have initiated the Melton Woman of the Year award as part of our Australia Day celebrations. This award recognises the great women in our community who give so much of themselves, every day.
Similarly, at the recent March Ordinary Meeting of Council, Councillors approved a Notice of Motion I put forward to establish a new Community Achievement Award that recognises the positive contribution of people who work to improve the lives of residents living with disability.
Many people are not aware of the challenges faced by people living with disability, so I feel it is important that we, who are affected either directly or indirectly, remind and advocate for those who cannot physically do so for themselves.
As a mother who cares for a child living with a disability, I believe its important to recognise the efforts of those who give nurturing and accessible community in which we can all thrive.

On a local level, we will mark the Anzac Centenary with a number of events including traditional dawn services. In the lead up to Anzac Day, I encourage you to place a white commemorative cross in a specially marked area on the lawn near the Cenotaph on High Street, Melton. The crosses are available for a gold coin donation from the Melton Library and Learning Hub (McKenzie Street) or Melton Civic Centre (High Street). All proceeds will go to the Partners of Veterans Association. I would also like to thank Sheddies from the Melton Mens Shed who have been busy making the crosses in readiness for their installation.
