“UITERS bekostigbare pret”, aldus Toyota.

Daar is ‘ntweeliter-viersilinder-boxer-enjin, afkomstigvan Subaru.

Bekostigbare pret? Vir seker! En ek sal homsélf wil was.

GENERALl Motors het so pas hul nuweIsuzu bakkie in Suid-Afrika bekendgestel.

KOUGA residents are a significant stepcloser to being able to purchase“clean” electricity.

This follows the turning of the first sod forthe construction of the R2 billion Red CapWind Farm project on Friday. It is expected that the 32-turbinewind farm,

to be constructed at Oyster Bay, will go intooperation during the second quarter of 2014and inject in excess of R250 million into com-munity upliftment pro-jects.The wind farm, which was named as one

of the preferred bidders in the Government’sindependent power producer procurementprogramme in December 2011, will generate80MW of clean and renewable energy. This isenough energy to supply 100 000 households.“Today signifies the true start of a greener

economy and benefits that will follow,”MarkTanton, a director of the wind farm, said onFriday. “However, we need everyone to sup-port our destiny, as we can only change thedestiny of the people of the area by workingtogether.”Tanton continued: “The construction of the

Kouga Wind Farm is the realization of adream to build a proudly South African windfarmwith significant community ownership.“Red Cap contracts in specific internation-

al expertise in the absence of local bases ex-pertise, but has partnered exclusively with

South African companies to develop and ownthe wind farm, as it is committed to ensuringthat significant skills transfer takes place.”According to Tanton 250 jobs will be creat-

ed during the construction phase. Seventeenof these jobs will be unskilled labour whichwill be sourced locally. The remainder willbemade up of a balance between semi-skilledand skilled jobs to be sourced locally asmuchas possible.Apart from generating clean and renewa-

ble energy, the project will benefit local com-munities through the Red Cap Kouga Com-munityDevelopmentTrust. TheTrust, whichholds a 26% shareholding in the project com-pany courtesy of an Industrial DevelopmentCorporation loan, will derive income off thesale of electricity and this will be used to up-lift the local community by funding health, welfare, education, local infrastructural andenterprise development projects.According to the SA minister of energy,

Dipuo Peters, local community membersmust realise that they will not only be 26%stakeholders, but they are also responsibleand accountable for the extend of the successof the project. “They must help support thedestiny of the people in the community,” saidPeters. For a video of the sod turn-ing ceremony, visit our web-site www.kougaexpress.co.zaand click on Multimedia.

JEFFREYS Bay, Paradise Beach and Aston Bay nowhave their very own innovative plastic pipe binswhere fishermen can throw away their broken or

used lines - the first of its kind in the Eastern Cape.

This project aims to reduce the severe environmentaldamage caused by discarded fishing line on coastlinesin the area.John Kieser, Manager from PlasticsSA, said: “We fre-

quently see sea birds and marine life trapped or killed

as a result of fishing line thatwas not properly discardedor removed from our oceans beaches. Discarded fishingline is listed under the top ten pollutants on beaches andis the most hazardous to animals such as penguins andseals. It is sometimes accidentally ingested by birds andanimals, resulting in injury or death. Fishing line is alsoused by birds for nesting material, causing chicks to be-come trapped in nests.“Each year, the results of the International Coastal

Clean-Up show that discarded fishing line continues tobe a major pollutant on our country’s beaches. To thisendwe partneredwith the SouthernAfrican Plastic PipeManufacturers Association (SAPPMA) and one of itsmembers, DPI Plastics, who provided funding and PVCpipes which are converted into bins that can be erectedon beaches, are resistant to the elements and corrosionand prevent the lines from blowing away.”Kieser said: “By increasing public awareness about

the negative impacts that fishing line debris has on ma-rine life, water quality, and human welfare, we hope toreduce the amount of fishing line entering and remain-ing in the marine environment, as well as to increasethe amount of fishing line being recycled.“We are hoping to eventually recycle the discarded

fishing line bins into benches. Our wish is that thisproject will educate the public in the responsible dispos-al of plastics and the sensitivity of our oceans, so theycan still provide joy for many years to come.”

How does it work? The plastic pipe bins are unlike standard round binsfoundat beaches – they look just like the submarine peri-scopes used by skippers to scout for threats on the sur-face of the water. They are made from PVC elbow pipes that are mount-

ed on long wooden poles. The bins have an opening atthe top, where the pipe curves, and the bottom is sealedto prevent fishing line from blowing away. The binshave beenplaced at beaches and fishing spots

in the area and anglers are encouraged to use them torecycle or dispose of their used fishing line. Johan Fou-rie fromGreenGuardian is responsible for opening binsand removing the fishing line on a regular basis.

TEENS experience a lot of tension they do not know how toget rid of.

Headaches, the urge to escape it all, hormonal upheaval, stomach ache, depressive episodes, aggression and other moreserious illnesses are all side-effects of stress

I advise them to practice methods to control stress and reac-tions (below).

Methods to control or master your reactions:These simple methods only work if one applies it.Breathing exercises – breathe deeply. Count up to 5 whilebreathing in, and 4 to breathe out. Repeat 5 times..Count – Silently count (slowly) to 10 or 20 or until you havesufficient control over your reactions. The counting will de-crease with time as you learn to control yourself..Humour – Divert tension or your own anger with appropri-ate humour. Make light of a potentially explosive situationwithout being flippant or insensitive..Calming - When anxious (eg in dentist chair or interview)divert your attention and focus on something positive or calm-ing. Imagine a tranquil setting (eg next to a stream of water)or having a fun-filled moment (eg at the beach). Deliberatelyslow your breathing..Perspective – Ask yourself how bad it really is. Does the cur-rent situation really warrant such an extreme reaction?.Thoughts – Learn to exert control over your thinking pro-cesses..Walk away – Turn around and walk away if the situationdoesn’t warrant attention or if it is potentially explosive. How-ever, don’t be disrespectful or abusive in the process..Pray – Quietly pray. Focus away from the aggravation or ag-gressor.Source: creatix counselling

Relax - and deal withstressTHE Easter long weekend is just around the corner.

Some families may be planning a trip away from home;while others may stay home and leave only for short peri-ods to visit relatives and friends. It’s also a busy periodfor criminals who see empty homes as easy targets.

One way of ensuring that you can rest assured over theEaster holiday is to address your security needs before youleave home.MartinKriel,ManagingDirector ofADTSecu-rity East Coast Region, says that the first step is to makesure that your home alarm system is working properly.

“Contact your security service provider to help you totest your alarm. While you have them on the line, checkthat they have your correct contact details so that no time

is wasted if something does happen.”Walking around the perimeter of your house will give

you a good idea of how secure your yard is. Kriel suggestslooking out for anything that could help a burglar enteror escape from your property.

“Make sure that the locks on gates are in a good condi-tion and check that all outdoor lights work.”

Once you are satisfied that the outside of your home issecure, do a similar check on the inside. Starting with thewindows and outward leading doors, check that eachlocks securely from the inside. Then make your way fromroom to room storing any expensive items and importantpersonal documents in a locked drawer or safe.

“Owners can also take additional precautions,” saysKriel. “If you are going to be away for morethan a day or two, consider installing a timerto turn certain lights on and off in the morn-ings and evening. Avoid mail piling up in thepost-box by asking a relative, friend or neigh-bour to collect it.”

Take one last look around your home whenyou are ready to hit the road, Kriel suggested.

Restassured this Easter

HUNDREDS of parrots and birds will be auc-tioned during theEast CapeBirdClub’s annu-al auction which will be held at Open Sky,next to the N2 highway on the outskirts ofPort Elizabeth on Saturday.

“Bird breeding is very time consuming andhas various degrees of expert skills needed de-pending onhowsuccessful youwant to be,” saidMorné du Preez from the East Cape Bird Club.According to Du Preez, there are two types

of birds or parrots that are marketed. Birdsthat have been hand raised, tamed and whichcan be handled as pets. Then there are thoseraised by their parents and these birds or par-rots are more sought after by breeders asbreeding stock.“It is one thing to breed and raise young

birds, but another thing todetermine their sex, ring them and successfully market them.”

Du Preez explained that birds and parrotsare normally sexed either by drawing theirblood and sending it to a laboratory to deter-mine whether it’s male or female; or alterna-tively having a vet to sedate the bird or parrotand using an endoscope to determine if theyhave an egg stick or testes.“Birds surgically sexed are tattooed under

their left wing as females and right wing asmales. Only when sexed and wrung can thebirds be placed on auction,” said Du Preez.)Birds will be booked in at Open Sky on Fri-day (22March) and there will be a social gath-ering from 16:00 to 22:00 where one can inter-act with other bird and parrot lovers. The ac-tual auction takes place on Saturday (23March) from 10:00 onwards. The public are most welcome to visit and

experience this interesting hobby and viewsome of the birds on display. For more infor-mation contact Morné du Preez on 0041 4078189 or [email protected]

Die nuutste syfers teen 15 Maart vertoon so: alte-saam 291 boere in Mpumalanga, 143 in Limpopo, 591

JEFFREYS Bay will soon not only beknownas the surfingmecca of theworld, but also as a renewable energyhub of the

Eastern Cape.

This tranquil town is set to be home to thefirst Energy Information Centre in South Af-rica.Situated at the back ofMentors Plaza across

theN2, the Centrewill be constructed at a costof R35 million. It is estimated that the firstdust will be drilled in the second part of theyear.Signifying the start of this project was the

sod turning ceremony on Friday attended bythe SA Minister of Energy Dipuo Peters, drWolseyBarnard fromtheDepartment ofEner-gy and Mlibo Qoboshiyane from the LocalGovernment of Traditional Affairs.“The idea is to establish an energy informa-

tion centre that will inform the general publicabout the electricity and energy sector inSouth Africa. It will also be utilised for train-ing of learners and students regarding energyoptions in South Africa and how the electrici-ty system is functioning,” said Peters.“Various scalemodels of coal fire, wind, PV,

hydro and nuclear plants will be exhibited. Inaddition, a small control room will also beavailable where the electricity network andthe way each energy carrier are supplyingelectricity into the grid, will be explained.

“An auditorium is also planned where larg-er groups of visitors and learners can be ac-commodated.”It is proposed that the site will only be sup-

plied with renewable energy. The design will, furthermore, be energy friendly, sustainableof nature andwill be constructed fromnatural

material from the surrounding area.A look-out platform is also planned from

where the various wind farms, of which onewill be next to the site, will be visible.According to Peters there are three wind

farms under construction in the Kouga area,as well as a fourth one in the process to reachfinancial closure. “Motorists will drive be-tween wind generators and these wind farmswill attract attention and spark interest in en-ergy. Hence the idea of an energy informationand training centre at this particular area, said Peters.

AFTER challenged in court and declared nulland void, the Kouga Municipality is now inthe process of reviewing their Liquor Tra-ding Hours By-law to regulate liquor tradinghours.

According to municipal spokespersonMfundo Sobele the municipality does nothave a by-law to regulate liquor tradinghours at this stage, hence the urgency. “Theone we had, was challenged in court and ren-dered null and void,” said Sobele.“Stakeholders in all wards will have an op-

portunity to make inputs on proposals fromthemunicipality. Businesseswill also be partof the public participation process and willhave a fair chance tomake inputs about a pos-sible impact. Only after all the informationhas been collated, and council has adoptedthe final draft, will we be in a position to say

what the new trading hours will be.”It is expected that the by-lawwill be promul-

gated before the end of June this year.According to the proposed by-law liquor

may be sold at liquor/ bottle stores, wineshops and retail food shops from 09:00 - 18:00,while liquor may be sold at a hotel from 11:00- 02:00 the following day. Most other licensedpremises, including B&B’s, guest houses, backpaker’s lodges, a pub, tavern, night cluband restaurant, are allowed to sell liquor be-tween 11:00 - 24:00.The by-law is available for inspection dur-

ing normal working hours at municipal offic-es in Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, St FrancisBay, Hankey and Patensie. The documents can also be viewed on the

municipality’s website at www.kouga.gov.za.Any comments or objection in respect of the

ILSE KRIGE & TINNEKE GOEDHALS

Diemeeste vraehet oorwerksge-leenthede gehandel.Peters het verduidelik dit verg langtermyn-

beplanning, omdat mense wat by kernkrag-sentrales werk, behoorlik opgelei moet wees.
