NON-existing load shedding scheduleshave residents hot under the collar.
Residents from across the Kouga region areup in arms with persistent power outagesplaguing JeffreysBay and surrounding areas.They are not as much frustrated about the
rolling blackouts, as over the ever elusiveload shedding schedule which will enablethem to be prepared for when load sheddingshould occur. Furious residents blame theKouga Municipality for withholding this im-portant information from them.The Kouga Municipality, however, is as
much in the dark as residents.“We would like to advise residents that the
municipality does not determine load shed-ding times for the area,” said municipalspokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall. “The on-ly schedule we have, is what is on the Eskomwebsite.”“We are aware that Eskomhas been inform-
ing residents that it is up to municipalities todetermine their own schedules. This is, how-ever, only true for high-consumption areassuch as the Nelson Mandela Metro and notsmaller municipalities such as Kouga.“The reasoning behind this is that a lot of
power can be saved quickly by targeting high-consumption areas. It is only when this does
not prove sufficient to alleviate the crisis, thatsmaller areas are switched off as well.”According to Randall, the municipality has
appealed to Eskom for clarity regardingschedules for Kouga towns.“We alertedEskom to the fact that no sched-
ule is available for Jeffreys Bay on the web-site. We await their response,” said Randall.“At this stage the municipality depends on
alerts from Eskom when there is to be loadshedding locally. Should we receive such analert, this will be circulated.”According to Tshediso Matona, CEO of Es-
kom, there is a high risk of load-shedding to-day and Friday, while the probability of loadshedding remainsmediumup toDecember 15.
“Wewill beusing the currentweekuntilDe-cember 15, to undertake even more mainte-nance thanusual,” saidMatona. “The progno-sis for load-shedding will be low to mediumfrom after December 15 until mid-January2015, should no additional risks occur on thesystem. However, beyond January and up tothe end of March, numerous load sheddingdays could become a reality.”According to Matona, the power system
will be severely constrained and will only be-gin to ease once at least two units at the Me-dupi Power Station near Lephalale in Lim-popo province and one at Kusile Power Sta-tion near Witbank in Mpumalanga arerunning.

A brand new satellite fire station in Hankeywill cut response times to emergencies - sa-ving costs, and more importantly, lives.
The Kouga Municipality officially handedover the state-of-the-art R922 000 million faci-lity to the Hankey community last Thursday.The station will provide much-needed fireand rescue services to the people of the Gam-toos Valley, including Hankey, Patensie,Loerie and Thornhill.Construction started inApril this year. The
fire station will boast eight fire fighters, ofwhich two are women, as well as two firetrucks - including a big proper truck.“Wedid not justwake up and decide to erect
a fire station here,” says Kouga MunicipalityPortfolio Head of Social Services councillorThandeka Maseti, who was the driving forcebehind the construction of the building.“Wewere instructedby the community that
the people of Hankey and surrounding areasneed a fire station. We listened.”
According to Maseti, the establishment ofa fire station in the area, addresses the direneed to bring this critical service closer to thepeople, especially in the light of the vastnumber of devastating fires in the area.“With the closest station situated in Hu-
mansdorp, thenew fire stationwill ensure theimprovement in service delivery and re-sponse times. These critical services need tobe close to where our people live,” saysMaseti.Patensie ward councillor Patrick Kota,
says: “Centrally located on the road to Pa-tensie, emergency services will now bemore effective and efficient. As a municipa-lity, we are bringing basic services to thepeople.”
.The Hankey Satellite Fire Station is a com-bined effort of the Sarah Baartman DistrictMunicipality, previously known as theCacadu District Municipality, and the KougaMunicipality.Construction was funded by the Sarah
Baartman District Municipality.

Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor PatrickKota said theupgradewouldminimise the riskof sewage spills onto themainbeachfront area.“It will also pave the way for the construc-
tion of RDP houses at Pellsrus,” he said.Two new pumps have been installed at the
La Mer pump station near the main beach.Old pipes and electrical panels are also beingreplaced.While the new pumps are already in opera-
tion to cater for the expected sewage increase
over the festive season, the upgrade as awhole will be completed by February 2015.New pumps have also been installed at two
small pump stations at Pellsrus to increasetheir capacity in preparation for the 220 RDPhouses to be built there.“Jeffreys Bay is one of the fastest-growing
towns in South Africa. This influx of peoplehas been putting tremendous pressure on theinfrastructure,” Kota said.“While there is a lot of work that needs to
be done to cater for the growing population,weare excitedabout theprogresswe’vemadeover the past three years to improve and ex-pand service delivery to everyone.”

The Kouga Cricket Performance Centre (KCPC) entered their under 12 Kouga cricket team torepresent Kouga at a cricket festival arranged by Eastern Province Youth Cricket Board in Cradockfrom December 5 to 7. The teams played two 50overmatches and one 20overmatch. LanroeRens (77 runs n.o.) and Jayden Groenewald (17 n.o.) were the batters who ensured an excitingvictory on day one of the festival. The Kouga team were overall fourth out of the eight districtteams represented.
