COLOUR THEORY
FORM
TEXTURE
PATTERN LINE
SHAPE
Lines produce an outline and are capable of producing texture depending on their length and curve.
A repetitive, decorative design. There are two main types of pattern; man made and natural.
The way something feels or appears to feel. Mark-making is used to create texture within drawings.
A shape is an area enclosed by a line. Shapes can be geometric, like a square, or irregular and organic.
Form refers to three dimensional shape. Tone can be used to create the illusion of 3D shape (form).
Tone is depicting the change from light to dark. This can be created by shading and a using variety of marks to add texture.
ProportionProportion refers to the relative size (scale) of the various elements in a design. For example facial features that are the incorrect size will make the face appear out of proportion.
The Grid Technique
The grid technique enables you to create accurate proportions and a likeness. This is by applying a grid over your original image and the canvas/paper you are working on. By following the grid for guidance and focusing on one square at a time, you can place the elements of the drawing accurately.

Analysing artwork:
The subject of this artwork is a close up portrait of a man. When I look closely I can see the features of the man’s face and a very high level of detail. The artist has used a painting approach called photo realism.
The artist’s use of the grid technique has enabled highly accurate proportions. A realistic colour palette also adds to the sense of realism.
The mood of this artwork is bright and alert due to the expression on the man’s face. However, the atmosphere could also be described as aggressive due to imposing figure within the composition.
Personal Reflections:
I was successful because I listened carefully to the tutorial and therefore used an accurate colourtheory.
I was successful because I understand the meaning of proportion and therefore created an accurate portrait.
I was successful because I made sure I took great care when applying paint to the background. For example I did not apply wet paint next to wet paint to avoid ‘bleeding’.
I was successful because I made sure I watched the demonstration video and asked for guidance so that I could include a good range of colour mixing within my final piece. This included…

Analysing artwork:
The subject of this artwork is the power of nature and the insignificance of man. When I look closely I can see a number of small boats full of people trying to get to safety. The artist has used a printing technique called Ukiyo-e. The bold lines and restrained palette of contrasting colours create interest and the composition
draws the eye to the mountain in the background.
The mood of this artwork is ominous due to the impending impact of the large wave crashing on the small boats. However, the atmosphere could also be described as peaceful in terms of the setting and choice of colours.
Personal Reflections:
I was successful because I listened carefully to the tutorial and therefore used an accurate manga style.
I was successful because I understand the meaning of pattern and I made reference to Japanese culture within my design, for example….
I was successful because I made sure I took great care when applying gutta to the silk. For example I used masking tape to hold it in place and I did not rush.

Analysing artwork:
The subject of this artwork is cellular biology. When I look closely I can see a very bold, abstract shape which forms the centre of the composition. The artwork includes intricate pattern and vivid use of complementary colours such as yellow and purple. The artist has used a variety of textiles including silk to create this piece. Thehigh level of detail and bold use of colour creates contrast and the organic composition creates a flowing and striking image.
Personal Reflections:
I was successful because I listened carefully to the demonstration and therefore used accurate tones within my collage.
I was successful because I understand the style of Karen Kamenetsky and I made reference to sciencewithin my pattern design, for example….
I was successful because I made sure I took great care when developing a mixed media outcome. For example I tested out media and did not rush.
I was successful because I made sure I watched the demonstration video and applied colour theory knowledge so that I could create a high quality outcome.

Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of reality.
By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy.

Analysing artwork:
The subject of this artwork is an elaborate portrait of a lady. When I look closely I can see a lady in a central pose surrounded by a lot of foliage and a black cat, and there is a monkey on her shoulder. The artist has used paint to create a detailed and realistic figurative representation. The artist’s use of symbolism has created meaning within the image that represents the artist’s life and personality. .
The mood of this artwork is engaging due to the bold use of colour. However, the atmosphere could also be described as tense and sad due to her facial expression and the black cat which symbolises misfortune.
Personal Reflections:

Analysing artwork:
The subject of this artwork is a lady who appears to be a cleaner. When I look closely I can see she is dressed in uniform and has a dustpan and brush. The artist has used spray paint and it has been completed on a wall; this technique is known as graffiti. The accurate proportions and choice of colours are quite naturalistic.
The mood of this artwork is intriguing due to the curious, unknown figure. However, the atmosphere could also be described as humorous due to the nature of what she is doing; hiding the dirt.
Personal Reflections:
I was successful because I listened carefully to the demonstration and therefore used the camera lenses accurately to create a macro image.
I was successful because I understand the style of Hundertwasser and I made reference to bold shape and pattern within my design, for example….

The subject of this artwork is ambiguous as it makes reference to a number of themes such as nature, love and religion. When I look closely I can see a large number of butterfly wings displayed in a pattern that forms a large symmetrical design which is reminiscent of stained glass windows. The artist has used household gloss paint and real butterfly wings.
