ST. JOSEPH’SINTELLECTUAL DISABILITY SERVICE
Intellectual Disability services, in general, for LHO North Dublin are provided directly by St. Joseph’s Intellectual Disability Service and
by a number of voluntary agencies through a range of community and residential service models.
Knockamann, a development of 10 bungalows and a Day Resource Centre, forms a crucial part in progressing national policy
in effecting the transfer of clients with intellectual disabilities, currently residing in psychiatric hospitals, to more appropriate
accommodation.
Moving into your own house, sharing a house with friends or mixing in your own community is for some a rite of passage, for others
this rite comes only with intensive support and planning on behalf of family, friends and carers. Knockamann offers the clients of
St. Joseph’s Intellectual Disability Service the opportunity to enjoy their own address unique to the house they live in. It offers the
opportunity to live with a small group of people and to have their own space within a home that is theirs alone.
The fruition of this development offers a unique and unprecedented opportunity for the clients of St. Joseph’s Intellectual Disability
Service to reach their full potential. It is a very welcome development by clients, their families, friends and service provider alike.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
St. Joseph’s Intellectual Disability Service provides training and care services for
adults with intellectual disabilities. We develop our services in a client centred
manner to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of our clients,
respecting their dignity, their individuality and their uniqueness.
KNOCKAMANN( C n o c n a M b a n)
Knockamann is the highest point in the Burrow, Portrane, Co. Dublin.
The name goes back to pre-Danish times. The way it is spelt would indicate its meaning to be Mahon’s Hill
or Woman’s Hill (Cnoc na Mban).

Lobby
The lobby of each house is a wide open space with the eye drawn to the
warmth of colour and the art work. The art work throughout each bungalow
is intended to achieve two purposes, (1) to showcase the magnificent art
work of the clients who attend art therapy in St. Joseph’s Intellectual Disability
Service and (2) to integrate images of our heritage, the architecture of St. Ita’s
Hospital and local images of North County Dublin.
Living Area
The living area looks out on a large enclosed
garden. Great care is taken with presentation with
special attention paid to the comfort and safety
of clients. This room boasts a flat screen TV, wall
mounted DVD and a selection of lamps, rugs and
ornaments provide a homely setting.
Dining Area
The dining area, adjacent to the living area, is a bright open space
which looks out to the front of the house. The dining area is
connected to the kitchen by a half door which offers clients the
opportunity to observe and smell the preparation and cooking of
meals where safety concerns prevent them from participating.
Sitting Room
A smaller sitting room overlooks a second enclosed garden.
This is a quiet space with cosy seating and a sound system that
is conductive to respite and relaxation.
Kitchen
The kitchen is spacious and
functional and equipped with
all the modern conveniences.
Bathroom
Each bungalow has two assisted
bathrooms. One boasts a Jacuzzi bath
and one a regular bath.
In addition each bathroom has a
floor level shower. The lighting in
the bathrooms is on a senor ensuring
that light is available once there is
movement within the room.
Laundry, utility and storage
There are also some rooms
allocated to staff functions such as
administration, laundry and storage
which facilitate the smooth transition
to the new style of living for the
benefit of both staff and clients.
Bedrooms
Each bungalow has six large individual bedrooms each with
an oversized single bed, wardrobe, wash hand basin, dressing
table, TV point and an array of photo frames and ornaments
that depict the uniqueness and individuality of the occupant.
KNOCKAMANN RESOURCE CENTRE
This centre, by its very name, is a fundamental resource to the clients of St. Joseph’s Intellectual Disability
Service. It offers a range of services and facilities that enhance the development of the clients in their
endeavour to reach maximum independence. The essence of the Knockamann Resource Centre, through a
range of shared spaces and integrated delivery, is to provide support, training and/or employment for each
client in keeping with their needs and abilities.
While functional areas are fluid and responsive to the needs of the clients they typically fall into four
categories – (1) Employment and Enterprise, (2) Recreation and Leisure, (3) Education and (4) Complex
Needs. Modules that fall under these main categories include Art Therapy, Recreational Therapy,
Multisensory/snozelan, Physical Education, Vocational Therapy, Living Skills, Horticulture, Home Economics
and formal teaching using the Montessori method.
The multidisciplinary team inclusive of professionals in Administration, Behavioural Therapy, Consultant
Psychiatry, Dietetics, Health Care Assistants, Management, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy,
