Official Newsletter of the Knights of Columbus of Missouri “One Family United” FEBRUARY 2020 Knights of Columbus Charity ~ Unity ~ Fraternity ~ Patriotism Newsletter STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR MICHAEL AUCHLY VOLUME 6, NO 8 STATE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR DOUG KISSINGER How is your Council progressing towards re- ceiving the Star Council Award? Have you looked at the Form SP-7, the Columbian Award applica- tion? Have you completed any of the required programs? You only have 5 months left to com- plete all of the programs needed to earn this pres- tigious award. I am leading off with this as I want all Councils to make sure they are tracking their status and scheduling the necessary programs and activities needed in order to earn this award. Whatever you do, don’t wait until the last minute to look at this form or wait to conduct your programs. While you are looking at your completed programs and planning the rest of your fraternal year I bet you have at least one phenomenal program that you are really proud of or is extremely successful! Every member reading this can attest that their council does some sort of program (or programs) which have a positive effect on peoples’ lives in their area; but they might not feel that these programs are worthwhile of winning an award because it is just another act of charity they perform. EVERY program you perform which positively affects someone in your community is worthy of recognition! I would like every council to submit an application for an award in at least one of the areas listed above. Pick what you feel is the program which best exemplifies your commit- ment to performing acts of Charity. One winner will be selected in each of the following four categories: Faith; Community; Family; and Life. State winners are then submitted on for the Supreme Contest. The application form (#STSP) is available on both the Supreme Council and Missouri State Council websites. The deadline for submission to the General Program Director is March 15, 2020. State Convention is just around the corner, April 24-26, 2020. Missouri Knights of Columbus delegates will travel to Jefferson City to participate in the 119th Missouri Knights of Columbus State Convention. With just a couple of months to go there is much preparation work to be done. You will be receiving numerous pieces of mail about the Convention, each is as important as the other. Please read each and follow up with the work that is required. A highlight of the weekend is the announcement of the Service Award Programs. Wouldn’t it be great to be a State Service Program Award winner? While you are conducting your programs always remember to use them as a membership recruiting opportunity. We need to continuously be looking for and asking potential candidates if they would join the Greatest Catholic Fraternal Organization for Men in the World! Membership is what drives every program and activity in the Knights and without new members we struggle to provide exceptional charitable works for our communities, families and our parish families. One last thing is to make sure that your Council send in your Form #1728, the Fraternal Activities Survey. This is also a requirement in order to be eligible for the Star Council Award. This report is essential for the Knights of Columbus to maintain their tax status as it tracks the contributions to charity in both dollars and man hours. This was due on January 31, 2020 but even if you missed the deadline you still need to submit this form ASAP. As always, please Remember to Celebrate Everything! This is a very important time in our quest to reach Circle of Honor. We are asking every Council to hold a recruiting event in February, March or April. This is extremely important if we are to reach our Membership Goal. This recruiting event can take many different forms. It can be a traditional Church Drive or a new Delta Church Drive. Your local Field Agent can help you hold a benefit night. If a church drive doesn’t work in your Parish, try a nontraditional ap- proach. How about a family ice cream social? A Super Bowl party? Whatever works in your Parish start planning it now. Every Council must participate. We also encourage you to schedule an Admissions Degree or the new Exemplification of Charity, Unity and Fraternity to coincide with your recruiting event. Invite the entire parish to join you and learn more about the Knights of Columbus. We need to include everyone if we are to continue our growth. Keep in mind the challenge put forth by State Deputy Bob Hawkins. He challenged the Knights in the State to earn Circle of Honor for Supreme Director and Past State Deputy Mick Gilliam. Mick is finishing his final term on the Supreme Board of Directors. Mick has served in almost every position on the local and state level. Now he is serving the Order on the highest level. Lets send him out in style at his last Supreme Convention while serving on the Board of Directors. We are halfway to our Circle of Honor goal. Let’s take a big step toward that goal by planning a recruiting event in every Council between now and April’s Convention. Make it happen and let your Membership Team know how we can help. EVERY PROGRAM IS A MEMBERSHIP OPPORTUNITY STATE FAITH DIRECTOR LUCAS VOLKMAN I hope all of your families had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! As we enter the final five months of the fraternal year, there are plenty of opportunities to in- crease your faith programs and achieve the Columbian Award. As Lent will begin at the end of the month, you should make a sub- stantial effort to pray as a council along with your families and fellow parishioners – prayer is the bedrock of a good spiritual life. The Faith in Action programs from Supreme, especially the Holy Hour and Rosary programs, can help you here. Get with your pastor to implement these programs. If your parish already sponsors holy hours or publicly says the rosary, encour- age everyone to attend, especially during Lent. Though, if you need suggestions in getting a Lenten spiritual pro- gram together, contact our faith en- richment chair, Fr. Rick Jones. On Sunday, February 16th, there will be a pilgrimage in western Mis- souri, in Gower at the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of the Apostles Monastery. The pilgrimage will be set up as a retreat, an excellent way to prepare for Lent. Let pilgrimage chair Don Allen or Kansas City-St. Joseph diocesan chair Chris Bradfield know if you are interested in attending. This will be an excellent opportunity to fulfill the Spiritual Reflection requirement for Star Council. A great way to help your local parish or Catholic school is through the Msgr. Mancuso Catholic Edu- cation Grants. The March 1st dead- line is coming up, so encourage your religious education program to apply. When you do so, be sure that the request for funds is for the reli- gious education of children from pre-K through high school. The forms are on the state website and chairman Fr. Joe Weber can help you if you have questions. Do not forget to send in your donations to the Missouri Religious Vocations Fund, which helps our dioceses promote the priesthood and religious life among the young. Fi- nally, do continue to pray for the success of your parishes, councils, families and for the Church. Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother and our founder, Fr. McGivney, we can indeed work to build up the Church in our com- munities. STATE COMMUNITY DIRECTOR CHRIS TEEL Welcome to Missouri’s KofC Community Activities Newsletter Section for February 2020. I’ve been – and at the time I haveto submit this newsletter section –will attend a number of other Dis-trict meetings. The welcome I re-ceive everywhere has been fantas-tic, for which I’m very thankful.I’ve talked in these fora about twothings. First, I highlighted the op-portunity of our statewide familyevents for what they are, fun oppor-tunities for our members’ familiesto get together with other families toappreciate the fraternity that weshare with one another. Events likethe Royals or Cardinals game, thebarbecue contest, horseshoes, cornhole, softball, build bridgesacross our state and help us appreci-ate the diversity of approaches andexperiences that make up our Mis-souri Knights. There are winners, but that’s not really the point. Forthe Cardinal game, I even passedthe event details over to the FamilyDirector in Illinois, to be sharedwith southern Illinois Knights whomight be Cardinal, not Cub, fans.

Finally, I discussed how, whenleverage family events toward mem-bership and building our order, wemust make sure that our events arecentered on bringing families to-gether in our parishes and commu-nities. Whether we’re chalking ourlintels in recognition of theEpiphany, caroling or using thePosada to celebrate Advent, or in-viting families to come up to churchas part of the Good Friday FamilyPromotion and then creating a fam-ily-supporting environment inchurch, we’re telling families that

the church and the Knights are wel-coming to them. We need to maxi-mize the number of our events thatare family-welcoming – and whenwe market events that are men only, like a smoker or a poker night –we’re telling families who want tostay together, to stay home. FamilyFully Alive is a monthly templatethat Councils can use, and pick fromoutside the monthly schedule, asideas for a parish centered activity.

This last month we suddenly lostone of the Family Chairmen, RonStuppy. Ron was the State Activi-ties Chairman since 2013, but moreimportantly was one of the go-to-regional guys in southeast Missouri. His will be missed. I offer my deep-est condolences to Sue and Aaron, and the rest of the Stuppy family.

Sixty Knights families will watchthe Kansas City Mavericks takethe rink against the Idaho Steel-heads on Saturday, January 25, (af-ter press time,) at Silverstein EyeCenter Arena in Kansas City.

Of course, the Kansas City gamewill feature a sumptuous buffet pre-pared by Chuck Paquette and histeam, as well as a $5 donation to theSpecial Olympics Training Centerrepair fund. Box score from thegame – and a review of the tailgate-next month.

There is still time to register forour inaugural State Cornhole Tour-nament, February 7 – 9, hosted bySt. Joseph Council #6420 in ScottCity. Play will begin on Fridaynight for local teams, Saturday forCouncils further afield, and con-clude on Sunday as needed. Athrower must be Knight, wife, son,or daughter of a Knight to be eli-gible. Note that kids are also wel-comed: a family-friendly youth tour-nament for eligible members’ chil-dren, 14 & under, will parallel thatfor adults. Entry is $40 per two-person team, but free for the youthtournament participants.

Also upcoming is the State Bowl-ing Tournament, at O’Fallon andFrontier Lanes in O’Fallon, March

14 – 15. More information is avail-able on Facebook under the grouptitle, Missouri Knights of Colum-bus State Bowling Tournament.

Scholarship applications for the2020 – 2021 school year are alsonow available online. College-bound families, this is free money! We offer eleven, $1,500 one-yearscholarships in various categories, for seminary-, college-, and voca-tional education-bound students. The scholarship is for one year only. The deadline for applications is Feb-ruary 20. Judging will occur inMarch, with winner confirmed bythe time of Convention.

We did not have a NovemberSupreme Family of the Month con-test winner, due to an administrativeerror in New Haven. The prize forwinners is the same: a print of theHoly Family, accompanied by a con-gratulatory missive from the Su-preme Knight; but only one winnerwill be chosen from each state, eachmonth. The next deadline for theupdated Supreme Family of theMonth is February 15, while ournext state fraternal recognition pro-grams deadline is March 15. Onlinenomination form may be found onthe state website forms pages.

The February theme for FamilyFully Alive – hey, it’s the month forSt. Valentine’s Day – is the Sacra-ment of Marriage. The activity forthe month is to discuss with yourchildren, who need not be young, particularly, memories of your wed-ding day, why you are grateful foryour marriage, and how you seeChrist as present in your marriage. The kids might then share some-thing they appreciate about theirparents’ marriage, and you mightshare what you appreciated aboutyour parents’ marriages. Explodethe theme to your parish by askingyour pastor to offer the Affirmation(not the Renewal) of WeddingVows, still available on theinterwebs, over the St. Valentine’sDay weekend, and recognize themarriages of your parish families.

I want to thank everyone for their participation in the Roses for Life Weekendand for those of you that either went to Washington D.C. for the March for Lifeor participated locally here in Missouri in some manner or another. We hadanother great showing of support as we continue to keep the importance of thisissue in front of our legislatures. Hopefully you are all on the Missouri StateCouncil Facebook page and saw the many photos and stories about the impact ofthe March that were shared! Along with your Roses for Life distribution in January, we suggested including

a Novena for Life at the same time. If you had a chance to do this, we would be interested in how you did it andif it was successful. The more information we can get to enhance our programs, the better. Send your responsesto chairman Ed Spence at HYPERLINK “mailto:[email protected][email protected]. Having a Novena forLife is a requirement for your Councils Columbian Award under the Life Program from Supreme so make sureyou make plans to do this before the fraternal year is over.

On the Meet Life program side, we have just placed two new ultrasounds. One ultrasound has been placedin St. Joseph for an outreach to Cameron and a second one in Parkville as that center grows in numbers of womenvisiting. Parkland is working on replacing theirs which was placed at the beginning of our Meet Life Campaign. So far, funds from our endowment is helping significantly in placing ultrasounds but we still need everyone’s helpwith supporting Vitae, maintenance on ultrasounds, new ultrasounds and our grants. I just had a Knight ask me,what if every Knight in Missouri just gave $5 a year? Simply put, that would fund our budget each year! So pleaseconsider your Council doing a baby bottle campaign or a simple fundraiser for the Meet Life Campaign so wecan save lives. Personal donations to the Meet Life Phase II can be made online at: HYPERLINK “http://www.continuetogive.com/meetlifep2” www.continuetogive.com/meetlifep2. If you want a personal website foryour Council for donations, let me know and I will make you one.

I am pleased to announce that we are now at $1,125,928.67 on our $1.2 million pledge for the Special OlympicsTraining for Life Campus pledge that ends this year at the end of our fraternal year. So, we are at 94% of our goal! Please do everything you can to finish your Council pledge if you have one and if not, donate just $500 or moreif you can. The Training for Life Campus is not just about athletics. The campus focuses on the whole familywith health programs and even programs teaching parents about their babies in the womb who have been earlydiagnosed with intellectual disabilities. As soon as I get a report on the reconstruction progress, I will share itout to the District Deputies and in the next newsletter. I know we are all anxious to hear how it is going.

I know the athletes are! If you want to make a personal donation to the TLC, you can do it online at:HYPERLINK “http://www.continuetogive.com/trainingforlife” www.continuetogive.com/trainingforlife.

I sincerely hope that your Council turned in the Profile for Special Olympics form #4548 that was due January31st. If you have not, do so soon and hopefully it will be recorded. Our state gets credit for every form turnedin regardless of the support to Special Olympics. So, if you did not support this year, it is OK to place zeros onthe report and turn it in. We could get up to $8,000 if we are the highest jurisdiction turning in this report. I hope your Council has signed up for the Cornhole Tournament in Scott City on February 7, 8th & 9th! Proceedssupport the SOMO Training for Life Campus. Vivat Jesus!
