KNIGHT OF THE MONTH What can I say about a young family man who is willing to help out
any time we’ve asked him? John Rovinski is one of those men we
have who repeatedly says “I’ll do whatever you ask of me!”
John has been true to his word from the moment I asked him to be a
council officer, to give a new member pitch from the lectern after St. Ann
masses, to volunteering at the Honor Flight missions to stuffing Easter
eggs and so many more actions along the way. John has a level head, I
attribute that to his wife though, and helps me to keep our eyes focused on
our mission as Catholics. He’s been a steady source of guidance and a
sounding board for me. However, sadly, he has also been an annoyance
when he insists on cheering for his hometown Phillies and Eagles. No one
is perfect I’ve found out.
With so many people like John as part of our unique council it’s
easy to see why we’re able to do all the great works that we do.
In gratitude to his ongoing service we will be making a donation to
St. Ann in his family’s honor.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
From time to time someone will wonder if we mind that not so
many people attend our council meetings. Or wonder if we still have a
sense of fraternal belonging, caring and unity for each other as Knights
of Columbus brothers and families.
I always tell them, no, I don’t mind that brothers don’t attend
meetings, because I know when EDW puts out the clarion call for
volunteers for specific events or that we need brothers and families to
pitch in financially for a worthy cause, I know, I know, that enough
people will rise to the occasion every single time. This happens without
fail. It’s not always the same people; it’s a mix of people depending on
the specific action needed. So we are continually reaching diverse parts of our families.
Back in the day, in-person meetings, the monthly newsletter and a “telephone tree” were how
you put the word out to members in organizations. Nowadays we have the much more efficient
internet that allows us to directly contact Knights and families immediately for organizing events
or to put the word out for emergency or time-sensitive needs. The monthly newsletter is still a vital
part of those communications but we now can get the Knight Life to you quicker via email. And
most of these messages reach you wherever you are with your smartphone!
This fraternal spirit has been shown many times over during my two years as Grand
Knight. With the decades old Thanksgiving dinners, the Honor Flight program, which have
tremendous support from EDW families as well as our neighbors, our aid for pre- and post-
natal children and their mothers through our partnership with the Jennifer Bush-Lawson
Foundation and the efforts of our Ladies UKnighted baby showers. We’ve shown our
fraternal unity and charity as well in the Rosary Drive for Kenya on behalf of the St. Agnes
sacristan, the emergency financial relief effort for a neighbor whose family was cut in half in
a house fire and most recently in helping a senior brother move his belongings to his new
residence. The love of our priests has also been shown this past month when I received a
request for aid from Fr. Mbinkar, who is a visiting priest from Cameroon residing at St.
James while he is studying at Catholic University. Fr. Mbinkar became an EDW member of
the Knights of Columbus in 2014. Father has two religious brothers who are being ordained
at the end of April who are in need of the basic necessities of celebrating the Holy Mass. We
simply put the word out via email to a segment of our members and very quickly received
enough donations to outfit these worthy priests with KofC Mass Travel Kits and a chasuble
and stole each. The travel kits contain the basic items needed to properly celebrate Mass
wherever the priests’ duties will take them. We received enough funds to be able to pay for
the shipping of these items to Cameroon, which is not cheap and to provide the two priests
with some extra cash to purchase, locally, items they will need.
I want to thank the 23 families that immediately rose to the occasion as well as the EDW
Golf Club and the, always-to-be-counted-on, Red Coat Waiters who use the tips they earn at
all the events they cater in the Main Hall to aid various charities.
Yes, my friends the four pillars of our Order; Fraternity, Unity, Charity and Patriotism,
are alive and well at EDW and show absolutely no signs of weakening any time soon.
Vivat Jesus,
John White

EDW KNIGHTS IN ACTION - FRATERNALISM
On March 26th, a dedicated group of volunteers assisted in the
move of Past Grand Knight Bob Cashman. Kim Tanner, Bob’s
daughter, wanted to extend her thanks to the following knights
(althought the list might not be all incusive): Kenny Goss, Bob
Dannemiller, Joe Baker, Chris Bannon, Kim Ahrens, her son John
and son in law Steven, Marijo and Thom Galvin.
It was a balmy day (to put it mildly), but they stuck with a
challenging task and demonstrated real fraternalism-EDW style.
ARE YOU MISSING UPDATES? Please sign up TODAY for the EDW email system by visiting

HONOR FLIGHT SPRING SCHEDULE A chance to give thanks!
Honoring our veterans, especially the World War II generation, is a tremendous act of patriotism and gratitude and
it’s a lot of fun to do as an entire family, as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop, a homeroom class or a soccer team!
It’s real simple and easy to do. Simply show up and line up outside when the buses arrive and cheer and say
thank you to our defenders. Then come into the building and help hand out and provide drinks to the veterans.
Please arrive at the main hall 20 minutes prior to the expected arrival times listed below. Stay for 20
minutes or stay for the duration and help clean up. I guarantee you if you strike up a conversation with one
of the men or women who served in WWII you’ll gain an incredible appreciation for what they sacrificed to
defeat Totalitarianism and preserve our freedoms.
This is a great way to introduce our children to giving back to our society and caring for each other. You can
encourage the kids to create posters or thank you cards to give to the veterans.
If you work for or in the military or for a government agency or company that would like to be a part of one
or more of these great events please contact me or the grand knight for information.

4 KNIGHT LIFE
CULTURE OF LIFE By Suzanne Tanzi
Co-chair of the Edward Douglass White Council’s
Culture of Life committee.
“He first loved me...”
“The name of God is mercy. There are no situations we can-
not get out of: we are not condemned to sink into quicksand.”
(Pope Francis)
Virginia Catholics are challenged once again to revisit the
moral dilemma of the state’s death penalty statute, with today’s
media spotlight on the recent bill -- gutted by Governor Terry
McAuliffe on April 10th -- approving use of the electric chair on
death-row inmates when lethal-injection drugs are not available.
Governor McAuliffe introduced an 11th-hour amendment that
would instead allow the state to hire a pharmacy to make lethal
batches in secret (the secrecy being important to uphold a
company’s positive public profile).
This is not the first time Virginia has been at the dramatic fore-
front on this issue, as its history of executions is the longest and
most liberal of any state. In fact, the first execution in the New
World took place in Virginia in 1608 when Captain George Ken-
dall was executed in Jamestown for spying. Since then, Virginia
has executed more than 1,300 people, more than any other state,
and has also executed more women and the youngest children of
any state. With seven inmates currently on death row during this
controversy, Virginia Catholics should consider stepping back from
the polarizing politics to assess the situation with the help of the
wisdom of the Church and the witness of the faith.
Twenty-five years ago, the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops
publicly assumedananti-death penaltyposition, stating, “Each ofus is
called to respect the life and dignity of every human being. Even
when people deny the dignity of others, we must still recognize that
their dignity is a gift from God and is not something that is earned or
lost through their behavior.” The USCCB asserted that imposition of
the death penalty should be employed if it is “the only available
means to protect society from a grave threat to human life. However,
this right should not be exercised when other ways are available to
punish criminals and to protect society....”
While in the past even Catholics took sides on the issue based
more on political or nationalistic leanings, the bishops continued to
insist on the primacy of Christ’s love, the basis of our personal
dignity, as the deciding factor -- and their guidance began to change
hearts. As St. John Paul II said in 1999, “ A sign of hope is the
increasing recognition that the dignity of human life must never be
taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil. . .
. I renew the appeal I made . . . for a consensus to end the
death penalty, which is both cruel and unnecessary.”
To better understandthis inhuman terms, in reality, Pope Francis
leads us to consider our own fallibility. Meeting with prisoners in
Bolivia in 2015, he asserted, “Standing before you is a man who has
been forgiven for his many sins.” In a later interview, in which he
was asked how he reconciles earthly justice with this knowledge of
mercy, he goes on, “God forgives everyone, He offers new
possibilities to everyone, He showers His mercy on everyone who
asks for it. We are the ones who do not know how to forgive.”
Joe, a 46-year-old local resident who became a Catholic while
still in prison, is striving to re-enter society and the work world after
thirteen years of incarceration. Before serving time, he was
abandoned by his family at an early age, dropped out of school, and
lived a homeless life he would term “of very little account.” He
relates with gratitude to the Pope’s words: “I know I deserved every
minute I spent in prison. But I am also eternally grateful for the
beautiful people who went beyond the norm of society and showed
love towards me when I was sad, confused, and near despair. I am
not opposed to capital punishment, but I do believe as a Christian I
have to look beyond my own ideas and see the soul as Christ does,
which is what happened to me. Christ looks upon us with a gaze of
grace and mercy. We all need grace. And we need more
missionaries willing to go into the prisons and bring the Gospel to
inmates to at least try to reach their tortured hearts and offer a way
of salvation. I know from personal experience that if I was not
shown compassion, I may have never been able to do so myself. The
people Christ has put into my life allow me to begin to forgive
myself and to look at others with better understanding. I love
because He first loved me.” The justice of our penal system -- good
and necessary as it is -- by nature does not accommodate the
mystery of human freedom, which just might say “yes” to Christ.
Joe’s profound experience elucidates this ideal: “Our ‘yes’ to His
grace strengthens each member as we become united, regardless of
past choices and failures, just as our ‘no’ dampens and distorts our
vision and drains us of joy. We are little children in need of a Father
who will nourish and guide us on the path of truth on which we
should walk. Then we become victors and the light shines...”

And on Easter Sunday
the special brunch
was a sellout success.
A special thanks to

IN UNITY WITH OUR PRIESTS EDW’s family rose to the occasion once again. We were honored
to be asked by Fr. Mbinkar, a visiting priest, from Cameroon, at St.
James while he is studying at Catholic University of America, to aid
two of his religious brothers in the central African nation. These
priests, much like Fr. McGivney when he started out as a priest,
needassistance to help them serve the people oftheir diocese.
Fr. Mbinkar asked EDW if we could provide the essentials that
a priest needs to conduct the Holy Mass. As a council we’re tasked
to aid those in our parishes and our immediate neighborhood while
keeping an eye on the larger picture. We need to positively impact
the world in as many ways as we possibly can. Aiding a St. James
priest is a no brainer.
With two emails sent to Knights at St. James and to families
signed up to receive info on the Diocese we quickly collected
enough money to purchase the items, to cover the shipping charges
and to provide the priests with some cash to aid their mission.
Thank you to everyone who stood up to aid our priests.

Our Christian brothers and sisters, as well as people from
other faiths, are being displaced, tortured, sold, and murdered.
The ongoing Syrian civil war and the rise of ISIS in Iraq and
Syria have led to many civilian deaths, perpetration of numer-
ous forms of atrocities, and mass population displacement.
We’ve discussed this in previous Knight Life editions, now it’s
time to act.
Religious and ethnic minorities within these regions have
been deliberately and methodically targeted for violence.
Amongst those targeted are our own Christian brothers and
sisters who have faced almost unimaginable forms of persecu-
tion. The circumstances faced by Christians and other religious
and ethnic minorities are so dire that the United States, and
other nations have declared the atrocities taking place to be a
coordinated genocide.
Since 2014the Knights have organizedthe Christian Refugee
Relief Fund and launched the Christians at Risk campaign to
support Christians suffering persecution in Iraq, Syria, and
beyond. So far, nearly $10 million have been raised for this fund
with 100% of these donations going to humanitarian assistance
and funding efforts to raise awareness of persecuted Christians
and other religious minorities. The yearly Dues you pay to be
Knights funded those relief efforts, we can be proud of the work
being done in our name.
Sadly, so much more is needed to support those who are suf-
fering. To support Supreme’s efforts, EDW is getting directly
involved now, we’ve purchased 100 olivewood crosses that are
produced in the Holy Land to sell and 100% of all sales will go
directly to support the Christian Refugee Relief Fund. More will
be ordered as we sell the initial allotment.
We need everyone to please buy a Cross for $10 in the
next 60 days. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/KofCEDW2473andyouremailforyour
opportunity to do so. Spread the word! Crosses will soon be
available at Sunday brunch, Supper Club, council meetings,
at the Mansion, hopefully in our parishes and elsewhere.
Donations of larger amounts are also encouraged.
