DISTRICT DEPUTY’S REPORT Joseph M. Feakes

The standard put forth by our Worthy State Deputy, Richard L. Sherbert, “First Charity”, is a powerful and challenging test. Charity is the cornerstone of the Knights of Columbus. It is fundamental to our Catholic Faith. St Paul writes, “So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13) How can we put these words into ac-tion? Exactly! With actions. As Knights, we are given many opportunities to live our faith through our Surge With Service proj-ects. All councils should now have a full compliment of program chairmen, and ide-ally, co-chairmen. I encourage each council member to participate in at least one pro-gram or project a quarter at whatever level you can. You will be surprised how many good things happen when we all work to-gether. One important result of good pro-grams and strong participation is member-ship. What better way for men and their families to become aware of the Catholic values so important to our order, than to see by example and invitation?

GRAND KNIGHT’S STATION Frank J. Marchone

I want to thank each and every one of you who helped celebrate the Installation of

Officers. As your Grand Knight, I was so honored by the number of people who attended. I hope all of you had a great time, because I sure did! The 15th of this month is a holy day

of obligation now referred to as “Assumption of Mary”, a day when we re-flect on the time when “the body of the blessed virgin was … taken into heaven and re-united to her soul”. The quote is taken from Butler’s Lives of the Saints. Make a point of doing something special for Her on that day, even if it’s just one “Hail Mary”. This is also the month of our annual Council Picnic (August 11th from 12-5). It will again be held at the Walter Reed An-nex. Since the September 11th attacks, they have tightened security. So I’m asking all adults to bring identification with you in case we have to pass a security check. The Global Catholic Network (EWTN) will air a program entitled “Life and Legacy of Fr. McGivney”. This 30-minute program about the founder of our Order will air at four different times. Look for specific infor-mation in a special article. We are bringing in more bingo players, which is good for our Council. But with more players, we need more workers. If you have some free time on a Wednesday night, come down and help. You might have such a good time that you become a “regular”. Thank you to the many Knights who have responded to our call for more volun-teers to tend bar in the Knights Room. The more workers we have, the easier it is for everyone. We still need a few more, so if you haven’t signed up, call Ralph Vallone.

CHAPLAIN’S REPORT Rev. Brian McCarthy

As Catholics we have a rich treasury of prayers at our dis-posal. From the Our Father and Hail Mary to the Prayer of Saint Francis and the Angelus. Yet, I still have the idea that with all these prayers as models, some do not know how to pray in their own voice. There are various traditions in teaching others how to pray. One of the ways that I remind myself as to how to pray in my own words is to recall something that one of the Sisters taught us back in grammar school. The secret word is ACTS. ACTS is an acronym. You know like IBM stands for International Business Ma-chines. Acts stands for four individual words. These four words can be a simple way to guide a personal prayer when we have the time and have the need. Adoration, Contri-tion, Thanksgiving, Supplication.

Types of Abortion SURGICAL A surgical abortion occurs when a mother walks into a clinic and undergoes a procedure which ends the life of the child within her womb. Here are some basic types of surgical abortions. SUCTION ASPIRATION – This is the procedure most often used in the first trimester (the first three months) of pregnancy. The abortionist inserts a suction tube (similar to a vacuum hose with an extremely sharp end). Into the mother’s womb. The suction and cutting edge dismember the body while the hose sucks up the body parts into a collection bottle. DILATION AND CURETTAGE (D&C) In this procedure, the abortionist uses a loop-shaped knife to cut the baby into pieces and scrape the uterine wall. The baby’s body parts are then removed and checked to make sure that no pieces were left in the mother’s womb. DILATION AND EVACUATION (D&E) This form of abortion is used to kill babies in the second trimester (3-6 months). The abortionist uses forceps to grab parts of the baby (arms and legs) and then tear the baby apart. The baby’s head must be crushed in order to remove it because the skull bone has hardened at this stage of the baby’s growth DILATION AND EXTRACTION (D&X or Partial Birth) Used to kill babies well into the third trimester (6-9 months), the abortionist reaches into the mother’s womb, grabs the babies feet with forceps and pulls the baby out of the mother, except for the head. The abortionist then jams a pair of scissors into the back of the baby’s head and spreads the scissors apart to make a hole in the baby’s skull. The abortionist removes the scissors and sticks a suction tube into the skull to suck the baby’s brains out. The forceps are then used to crush the baby’s head and the abortionist pulls the baby’s body out of the mother.CHEMICAL ABORTION All of these co-called contraceptives are what we call “abortifacient” – meaning that they are abortion-causing agents. A quick explanation :All chemical contraceptives have three modes of action – to prevent fertilization. The other mode works after fertilization has occurred. And because human life begins at fertilization, anything which acts to destroy that new life is considered to be a form of abortion.

MEDICAL RU-486 – A chemical regime taken within the first 49 days of pregnancy. RU-486 blocks the hormone that helps develop the lining of the uterus during pregnancy (progesterone). This lining is the source of nutrition and protection for the developing baby. The tiny boy or girl is starved to death and then a second drug, misoprostal, causes contractions in the mother’s womb so that she expels a dead baby.

METHOTREXATE – A highly toxic chemical that directly attacks and breaks down the baby’s fast growing cells. It also attacks the life-support systems the baby needs to sur-vive. When the system fails, the baby dies. Misoprostol is then used to cause contrac-tions and push the dead baby out of the womb.

NEWS FROM SUPREME Knights of Columbus Supreme

Knight Applauds Renewed Effort to Ban Partial-Birth Abortion

New Haven, CT — Representative Steve Chabot, chairman of the House Constitution Subcommittee, has reintroduced legislation to ban partial-birth abortion. Two years ago, the Supreme Court in Stenberg v. Carhart, struck down a Nebraska law banning partial-birth abortion, which had the effect of strik-ing down similar laws in some thirty other states. Three times previously, the U.S. Con-gress had passed legislation to ban partial-birth abortion; the first two bans were vetoed by then- President Clinton, while the third faltered after the Supreme Court ruling. The following statement was issued by Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson: "The Knights of Columbus applauds Repre-sentative Chabot for this renewed effort to ban partial-birth abortion. This is a particu-larly gruesome method of abortion in which the child is brutally killed by having its skull pierced and brain removed while in the proc-ess of being born. It should be banned im-mediately. "The Supreme Court's decision to allow par-tial-birth abortion was based on bogus find-ings of fact from a lower trial court. Based on the testimony of late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart and other abortionists, the lower court erroneously concluded that par-tial birth abortion may be a safer and more appropriate abortion procedure in certain, undefined, circumstances. "This lower court conclusion is contradicted by numerous hearings held in both the House and Senate during which medical ex-perts testified that a partial-birth abortion is never medically indicated and never neces-sary to protect the life or health of the mother. The American Medical Association also raised medical and ethical objections to this procedure and also concluded it should not be used. "This new legislation incorporates Con-gress's own factual findings, and also gives a more precise definition of a partial-birth abortion. The will of the American people to ban this procedure should not be held hos-tage to the errors and inaccurate conclusions made by one lower court. We urge Congress to swiftly pass the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2002 and put an end to this bru-tality once and for all."

(Continued from page 1)Chaplain’s Report We greet God by our adoration. We ac-knowledge God's goodness and greatness. We acknowledge our humanness in our contrition for our imperfections. We thank God for what we have received. We can wrap up our prayer by expressing ours and others needs for God's help and favor. Depending upon my mood and my needs, contrition might be longer than thanks or I might choose to change the or-der. I find that the car is one of my favorite times to talk to God and yet sometimes it can be difficult to start. So I just remember what Sister said, "ACTS, adoration, contri-tion, thanksgiving, and supplication. It works for me. Maybe it can work for you

MARY’S WIDOWS Monday Jul1, 2002 was a significant day in the lives of the ladies of Mary’s Wid-ows. Yes, it was the first day of the week, the first day of the month, and the first day of the quarter. But most importantly, it was the first time that the ladies had assembled for a luncheon meeting in the month of July since the Club was organized many years ago. We have cancelled luncheons in Janu-ary and February dur to uncertain weather conditions during those months. Members will now meet in July and August for a to-tal of ten luncheon meetings a year. This month’s gathering took place at the Gazebo Restaurant on Bauer Drive. Thirty three ladies were in attendance. Ruth Fer-raro and Louise Githens were in charge of the arrangements. Entrée choices were salad or soup with salmon, chicken with rice and lasagna. Marian Ruck conducted the 50/50 which was won by Alice Jordan. Prayers were offered for Dot Furnary and Jennie Hale. Both ladies are recuperating from illnesses. Next month’s luncheon meeting will take place on Monday, August 5th at a place to be announced. Marian Ruck and Elsie Pank will be the hostesses for the oc-casion. Remember, any lady whose hus-band, at the time of his death, was a mem-ber in good standing of Fr. Rosensteel Council is eligible for membership in Mary’s Widows and is cordially invited to join us at our luncheons. Hope to see you at the meeting on Mon-day, August 5th. Have a pleasant summer. May Christ give to you at this time and for always His Peace in your soul, His Presence in your heart and His Powern in your life.

Family Financial Fraternal Benefits

WILL YOU BE READY Will you be ready to change occupations when you reach your company's mandatory retirement age? If you do not have an ade-quate monthly income at that time, there's a good chance that you will be working at low-paying, part-time jobs just to maintain a decent standard of living. Well over 50% of the people who retire need supplemental income because they find that their retirement benefits and com-pany pension plan cannot keep up with in-flation and ever rising costs of living. And no one wants to drastically reduce their standard of living after they've spent their working years trying to raise it. We want you to enjoy your retirement years in dignity. Let me help you plan to be com-fortable. Call me today for an appointment.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Our Knight of the Month went to college at Holy Cross in Massachusetts. He re-ceived his Masters at Catholic University but is an avid Notre Dame fan. During world War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps. He taught school in Montgomery County for many years be-fore retiring. He is a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish where he serves as both a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. He has been an active member of our council for many years. At every Retired Men’s Club luncheon he is at the door collecting money. He takes care when announcing the names of the sick and deceased and always makes sure to say a special prayer for Vocations. As Chair-man of the Widows Club, he squires Mary’s Widows to lunch once a month (tough job!). He is a Past Faithful Navi-gator of the Fourth Degree, where he continues to serve as a member of the Color Corps. When he served as a mem-ber of the Building Association, he re-ceived a lot of ribbing about his tools (a knife and fork). He is a very pious man and is affectionately referred to as “Monsignor”. That’s right, our Knight of the Month is Bill Fenton!

FAMILY OF THE MONTH This Family of the Month goes to St. Bernadette’s. They can normally be found at the council on Friday night. They are quite a team in the kitchen. If not working, he may be playing backgammon or reading a book before dinner and she is doing a needlework project (usually for someone else). But if help is needed in the kitchen, they just grab an apron and get to work. He has a beautiful voice and serves as a Cantor. He is a recently-retired school teacher, but she is still teaching at St. Bernadette’s. They are another couple who serve the council whenever and wherever needed. Con-gratulations to our Family of the Month, Steve and Donna Clarke!

(Continued from page 1)District Deputy’s Report Let’s talk about membership. Last month I listed my three priorities for this fraternal year. Membership, quality membership, was number one. If our councils are to have suc-cessful programs, broad-based participation, and strong leadership, attracting new mem-bers is essential. Remember the ASK princi-ple. We have a great deal to offer. Each council is different. Each has its own per-sonality. Each has special qualities that can offer a Catholic man and his family numer-ous ways to enrich their lives and the lives of others. Be proud of who you are and the good work that you do. Wear the emblem of the order with dignity. Where else but the Knights of Columbus can a man have the chance to work with a shovel or a rake in his hand and still carry a Rosary in his pocket? Whether his interest lies in hammer and nails or bread and wine, we have a way for that man to share his gifts and create a better community and a better church for all of us. Your District Warden,Yen Le, and I, and our wives, Nu and Lynn, hope that all of you are enjoying a relaxing and refreshing summer. Please continue to pray for our or-der and our country. God bless America. Vivat Jesus.

GENERAL PROGRAMS DGK William Draize

Our biggest and most pleasant event this month will be the Annual Pic-nic. This event is brought to you by Bro.Tony Horner and his committee to be held at Walter Reed Annex August 11. Secu-rity will be strict, but we expect that. Bring some I.D. and that should satisfy the military security. Between now and the time of the Picnic, you have every op-portunity to contact Tony and ask him where your services could best be put to use. On Tuesday July 14th I had the privilege of chairing the Council Direc-tors and Committee Chairman’s meeting. Topics brought up ranged from the Toot-sie Roll drive to the retention of new members and encouraging them to get involved and taking their 2nd Degree and further. I myself was encouraged and gratified by the number that attended the meeting. I want to express my sincere thanks to those Brothers that attended. Now all that your Council Officers have to do is carry them out as best we can. Most of all, the Committee Chairman asked for was help from our membership. So if you have the time, even only for an hour or two, please contact them, and get involved. Now that we are starting our frater-nal year, as a big family lets get behind our Grand Knight and make this a great year. GOD BLESS each and every one of our members and their families.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary On August 15th, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption which is a holy day of obligation. Remember that the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven when her life on earth was finished. The fourth glorious mystery of the rosary is in honor of the Blessed Mother’s assumption. Let us all remem-ber the Blessed Mother by saying the ro-sary daily. When we pray the rosary in reverence with Mary, we ask for her in-tercession to God for us. Supporting the Elderly and Infirmed Sisters We have received donations in the amount of $750 to care for the elderly and infirmed Sisters of the Dominican Sisters of Hope located in New York. This home cares for 62 sisters who are elderly and infirmed. The funds will be used for the basic infirmary supplies needed each day to relieve the dear sis-ters of suffering and pain. In addition to the funds, our committee has sent per-sonal notes to the sisters. These notes help bring joy and happiness into their lives.
