Can you believe that March marked the five-year anniversary of when Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected and “Habemus Papam!” (We have a Pope!) was pro-claimed? We went from a state of happi-ness to a quiet ponderance of who this man was and what he represented. And here we are a half decade later, reveling in his ability to include us, invite us to reconnect with our church and our faith as missionary disciples of Christ in our daily lives. Through his travels, his homilies and his writings, Pope Francis personifies the fundamental treasure of Christ’s love through expressions of support and love for one another. I love his de-scription of the impact of God’s grace: “If we - all of us - accept the grace of Jesus Christ, he changes our heart and from sin-ners makes us saints.” To become holy we do not need to turn our eyes away and look somewhere else, or have as it were the face on a holy card! No, no, that is not necessary. To become saints only one thing is necessary: to accept the grace that the Father gives us in Jesus Christ. There, this grace changes our heart. We con-tinue to be sinners for we are weak, but with this grace which makes us feel that the Lord is good, that the Lord is merciful, that the Lord waits for us, that the Lord pardons us - this im-mense grace that changes our heart. As we celebrate Easter and Christ arising from the dead, we are lifted with him in our lifelong quest to be like him. We re-joice in the ultimate sacrifice made on our behalf and are hum-bled by the opportunity to be in a deep relationship with the Father. We are given the opportunity to overcome our short-comings, receive the sacrament of reconciliation and renew our spirit. There’s no other feeling quite like the refreshed breath as you leave the confessional, blissful in the unburden-ing and in the reconnection with our Lord and Savior. The path is of our choosing and God welcomes us to join him. As Pope Francis shared - “God offers us the season of Lent each year as a chance to return to Him with all our hearts!” Let’s keep that spirit throughout the year, keep our covenant with our Father. Christ is Risen indeed. Happy Easter, Fr. Rosensteel family!

Chaplain’s Reflection What Does Our Faith Mean to Us?

As we celebrate Easter, we should reflect on what our faith means to us. There may be times that we have our doubts, but remember even the apostle Thomas refused at first to believe in Jesus’ resurrec-tion, even though his eye-witnessing friends said it was true. We believe in Jesus’ resurrection because the eyewitness of the apostles has been passed on to us through some 70 generations. Some of these Christians have even died rather than renounce their faith. Yet there are those who say to us that our resur-rection faith shows that we’re crazy, weak, backward and dangerous. The disbelief of “Doubting Thomas” vanished when Jesus appeared to him in person. But that’s probably not going to happen to us. So how can we keep a firm grip on our faith in the face of criticisms that can eas-ily sow seeds of doubt and tempt even the most faith-ful among us, to wonder if what they say might just be true? We can begin by remembering all the different ways our faith makes us strong. For starters, numer-ous studies have shown that people of faith are healthier and live longer. Faith, therefore, helps make us physically strong. And it helps us be emotionally strong too, because our faith can fill us with joy, hap-piness, contentment and peace. Even more than this, our faith gives us strength in the face of life’s diffi-culties and whenever we confront the realities of pain, suffering and death. Our faith gives meaning to these events, reminds us that we have a God who walks with us, offers hope for a better life beyond this one and empowers us to forgive those who may have done us wrong. We should ask ourselves, “What kind of people would we be without faith?” Probably weaker, less happy, more confused and certainly not stronger-minded! As the philosopher Kierkegaard once said, “Life is not a question of belief versus unbelief. It’s a question of belief versus despair.”

But does our faith make us dangerous? It’s true that terrible things have been done in the name of Christian faith. As Christians, we should apologize for them and seek to heal any damage that has been done. But let’s not forget that lack of faith has led to far more terrible things. Just think of the tens of millions who have died un-der Communist regimes. We must also never forget that faith has inspired people and the Church to do wonderfully good things: the promotion of human rights and the care, protection and education of the sick, poor, per-secuted and forgotten members of society. Our faith inspires us to a goodness and generosity we wouldn’t have without faith. One prominent atheist today dismisses love of enemies as a “monstrous notion,” while our faith teaches that it’s a virtue. So are people of faith more dangerous than those without it? You tell me. Yet even if we’re less dangerous, might we still be behind the times? Is our faith nothing more than a leftover evolutionary by-product? Is faith in God is simply a function of the way our brains are wired and nothing more? Or is it God who wired our brains to have faith in the first place? The answer to that is, well, a matter of faith! But maybe a voice from long ago, St. Augustine, can help us out. He maintained that it is natural for people to have faith. To lack faith, on the other hand, is unnatural because of the way God has made us. So while there will always be those who say faith is crazy, dangerous, out-of-date or even just “our thing,” people of every time and place will hunger for Christian faith. Or as G. K. Chesterton once said, “Christianity has been declared dead many times. Thankfully, it has a God who knows his way out of a grave.”

Oversight Committee Update

The committee continues to review business practices of the Clubhouse. Moving forward, it will be instituting accountability measures that track profit & loss on a per-event basis, along with inventory analysis and cost control measures. The single swiftest solution to the current financial crisis con-tinues to be this: Book more events, book big events, refer Rosensteel Hall to everyone you know. If you have any questions, speak to GK Bruce Cotting and/or PGK Terrence Moore. Each, along with other members of the committee, has spend long hours in the long-term effort to help restore Clubhouse’s financial viability.

The Best of Rosensteel

Knight of the Month - This Knight of the Month has been instrumental in deepening the integration of the AOH within our Council. For those unfamiliar with The Ancient Order of Hibernians, it is America’s old-est Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization, founded concurrently in the coal-mining region of Pennsylva-nia and New York City in May 1836. The early Irish societies were born of a need in the mid-1500s to protect the welfare of fellow Irish Catholics, especial-ly the clergy who risked immediate death to keep the Catholic Faith alive in occupied Ireland after the Pe-nal Laws of 1691, and to provide aid and comfort their people by whatever means was available. It is a natural synergy that exists between the Knights of Columbus and the Hibernians, whose mot-to is: “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity.” It was in this spirit that this Knight championed our hugely successful St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser for the Club-house, the St. Patrick’s Day celebration and the event would not have been possible without his tire-less efforts (and his lovely bride Mary Claire, too). Please congratulate Francis Moran as Knight of the Month! Family of the Month - The selection for Family of the Month represents unselfish contribution of time and energy for the greater good. And this month, it’s a family that quietly melds into our Rosensteel family, frequently enjoying Friday Family dinners and Coun-cil events. They’re often available to volunteer on short notice, happy to contribute, positively and en-thusiastically engaged every time they help out. They’ve had their challenges over the last several months and yet their cheerful demeanor just makes you smile to be in their presence. Please congratu-late John and Sara Liddi as our Family of the Month! Quite honestly, they are quiet, wonderful role models of leading by example and Rosensteel is all the bet-ter for having them in our family.

Nuns Appreciation Dinner

On Thursday, April 26, from 5 to 8 p.m., Fr. Rosensteel Council will be closed in honor of Nuns Appreciation Night. Fr. Rosensteel Knights will serve over 100 nuns from the Archdiocese of Washington and Montgomery County, MD. This year's event marks the 46th consecutive year that Council #2169 has hosted the event which honors the nuns for their dedication to the religious life and years of service to God, our churches, schools and the community. Volunteers are needed to serve and bartend; they must wear dark pants and a white shirt. Ties are preferred. Rosensteel Council Seeks a Few Good Men Father Rosensteel Council is in need of candidates to be con-sidered for elective office beginning in the next Fraternal Year which starts July 1, 2018. Such positions are Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Chancellor, Recorder, Treasurer, Ad-vocate, Warden, Inside Guard, Outside Guard (two Outside Guards may be elected) and Board of Trustees. The Council will also elect a Delegate, First Alternate and Second Alternate to the State Convention. Each of these three must be a Past Grand Knight of the Council and will be elect-ed at the same time as the positions above. The month of April plays host to three special days. The most important day is Easter, which most often (but not al-ways) falls during April. There is no need to explain that. But I find it interesting that hiding Easter eggs is considered to be of pagan origin. Eggs are a symbol of fertility and new life. April Fool’s Day derives its name from the Latin word “aperit,” which means to open. It is considered that April is the month of the growing season and when trees and flowers begin to “open.” The tradition of April Fools Day seems to have originated in France where New Year’s Day was actually celebrated on April 1 during medieval times. Unfortunately, it became a day when practical jokes were played on the un-wary. Another day to remember is Earth Day, celebrated on April 22. This day was first celebrated in 1970. The idea is to make people more aware of the earth’s environment and find ways to ensure it remains livable for human beings. Two days after Earth Day is our monthly luncheon on April 24. By that day we should be over the cold March winds and almost finished with the April showers. Hopefully, we will have a good turn- out of smiling faces to welcome the warmer, “sunshiney” weather.
