KNIGHT LIFE
KNIGHT OF THE MONTH
This month, our Knight of
the Month is Redcoat Chief,
New Year’s Eve Party King,
and the man most responsible
if you get your Knight Life in
the mail – Bob Muschamp.
Bob continues to be one of the
hardest working men in our
council, heading up our ever-
busy five Red Coat teams,
and the 120 or so men who
serve as volunteer support to
our Club
Brother Knight
Bob Muschamp
and Council activities. If you enjoy our New Year’s Eve
Parties, Bob has been the master planner for the last 19
or so! On top of all that, he coordinates a small team of
four or five Brother Knights who pick up our newly
inked Knight Life’s each month from the printer’s and
ensure they’re addressed and mailed to your homes.
Thank you, Brother Bob.

FAMILY OF THE MONTH
Alright kids, stop reading this right now! The Family
of the Month for December is the Clauses, er...Galvins! I
don’t know how many times Thom and Marijo don their
fur-trimmed finery to make Christmas a little more
special for many local children, but they have my vote
for the best Clauses ever. Our “Breakfast with Santa” is
a truly special event. Somehow Thom and Marijo roll
right from biggest Thanksgiving in Arlington into a busy
Christmastide. Maybe they can do that because they’ve
actually recovered from the “Pool Season” by the time
Thanksgiving arrives. I met Thom and Marijo’s sons
Noah and Brandon early on Thanksgiving morning
helping out with that massive charitable effort, and
found out they’re both EDW Brother Knights. OK,
Worthy District Deputy/ Virginia Knights of Columbus
Charities, Inc. Board Member – get back to work! Matthew and Anna at “Breakfast with Santa”

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
Happy New Year! The liturgical year begins
with Advent, and although Christmas Day is
December 25th, the Christmas season continues as
we celebrate those events that are part of the New
Testament “infancy narratives.” The Epiphany is
normally celebrated on January 6th (the 12th day
of Christmas!), but since the 6th falls on a
Saturday this year, it will be celebrated on Sunday
the 7th. During my five years in Puerto Rico, the
Epiphany, or Three Kings Day (El Dia de los
Reyes), was celebrated with much more “gusto” than it is here. Even small
towns had parades, and some of the locals always dressed up as the three
kings and had goodies for the kids. When I was a youngster, my parents
would never take down the Christmas tree until after Epiphany. Although
current church calendar can extend the Christmas season beyond the “Twelve
Days of Christmas,” in the older tradition Christmas lasted until the Feast of
the Presentation (and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary), also
known as Candlemas. This made for 40 days between Christmas Day and
Presentation (known as “Christmastide”).
As always, thanks to the many volunteers and Club staff who make our
Christmas season and New Year’s Eve Celebration so wonderful. Lots of
decorations, a great “Breakfast with Santa,” our first ever “Mom’s Night
Out,” and EDW Christmas Party.
Don’t forget we have our Annual Columbus Club Elections following the
EDW meeting on January 4th. We will also have an Open House/Social in
lieu of our 2nd EDW meeting on January 18th. This will give prospective
candidates a chance to see what we do!
All Brother Knights and family members are highly encouraged to
participate in the March for Life 2018 (Jan 19th). If you are able, please
consider serving as March for Life Marshalls. Please see the March for
Life article update in this Knight Life.
This month we honor our Lord in an optional memorial of the Most
Holy Name of Jesus on January 3rd.
Let us pray to our Lord and Savior, upon Whom the Father bestowed
the Name that is above every name – Lord have mercy!
Vivat Jesus!

MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS
January 3, 2018
Although Saint Paul might claim credit for promoting
devotion to the Holy Name because Paul wrote in
Philippians that God the Father gave Christ Jesus “that
name that is above every name” (see 2:9), this devotion
became popular because of 12th-century Cistercian
monks and nuns but especially through the preaching of
Saint Bernardine of Siena, a 15th-century Franciscan.
Bernardine used devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus
as a way of overcoming bitter and often bloody class
struggles and family rivalries or vendettas in Italian city-
states. The devotion grew, partly because of Franciscan
and Dominican preachers. It spread even more widely
after the Jesuits began promoting it in the 16th century.
In 1530, Pope Clement V approved an Office of the
Holy Name for the Franciscans. In 1721, Pope Innocent
XIII extended this feast to the entire Church.

LADIES U-KNIGHTED NEWS JO BALSAMO WOOD
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a blessed
Christmas and wonderful holiday season. Thanks to
everyone who helped decorate the Old Council Home
for Christmas.
We had our annual LUK Christmas party and white
elephant gift exchange on Dec 14th. Fun was had by
all. See our annual Christmas photo in this month’s
Knight Life.
It’s a new year to start on a new track for membership.
Ladies U-Knighted meets at 7:30 in Dining Room of the
Old Council Home the first Thursday of every month. If
you or a friend or family member is interested in joining,
please stop by for a meeting. Check out the LUK website
at www.ladiesuknighted.com for information and
upcoming events. Follow us on Facebook at Ladies U-
Knighted.
Please join Ladies U-Knighted in wishing a very
happy birthday to Marijo Galvin (1/28). The next LUK
meeting will be Thursday, Jan 11, which is the second
Thursday of the new Year. Wishing you all a very
happy and healthy 2018.
“WHAT WILL YOU SACRIFICE TO BUILD A CULTURE OF LIFE?”
“Love Saves Lives” is the theme for the upcoming
2018 March for Life. The 45th annual March for Life,
the world’s largest annual human rights demonstration,
will be held on January 19, 2018.
“Choosing life is not always easy, but it is the
loving, empowering, and self-sacrificial option. Love
is universally attractive because it is directed towards
others. Love is what we all strive for because deep-
down we are all drawn to give of ourselves in this
way. Love saves lives in countless ways,” said Jeanne
Mancini, President of the March for Life.
Virginia Knights of Columbus demonstrate their love
for others each January by serving as marshals for the
March for Life. As Jeanne Mancini has told us many
times, “Without the Virginia Knights of Columbus we
could not have the March for Life.” And in the same
way, we are blessed to be able to help make the March
for Life happen each year.
Think of what we “put up” with each year. Some frigid
cold, some almost spring-like, once with snow that closed
the eastern seaboard – but not the March for Life – but
always unique and life affirming in a special way. Each
year filled with hope and love, prayer and song. And last
January, the first ever personal appearance by the sitting
Vice President, Mike Pence and his wife. This was an
historic first for the March for Life.
If you have attended you recognize the importance of
Virginia Knights of Columbus in making the March for
Life happen. We assist and direct marchers, provide first
aid to marchers, security for the dignitaries speaking at
the rally, help with lost persons, police up litter after the
rally, and coordinate the banner and flags that lead
the march. Others provide support and refreshment
for the marshals or collect funds to help pay the
March for Life expenses.
But the rally and march are not the only events!
People from across the country come to Washington
for more than the March for Life. They come early to
pray, to attend the March for Life Conference and
Expo. They stay to speak with their congressmen, and
attend the annual Rose Dinner, which was organized
to recognize pro-life leaders. Other organizations host
events as well. This shows a level of commitment to
building a culture of life we should all strive for. So in
addition to participating as a marshal in the upcoming
March for Life, what will you sacrifice to build the
culture of life?
And remember to sign up to marshal on the web
at tinyurl.com/KofC2018MFL.
MARCH FOR LIFE NOTE
The location for the rally and starting point for the
actual march have been moved due to NPS restrictions
and attendant costs. The new location for the rally will
be on the National Mall at the 12th Street panel
between Jefferson and Madison.

WAYS TO PAY FOR WHOLE LIFE
We live in a world of options and we are constantly
bombarded by choices. Some of these make our lives
more complicated, but many of these choices are
created with our satisfaction in mind.
At the Knights of Columbus, every product we offer
has been designed solely for the benefit of our members
and their families. When I present an option to you, it’s
because a team of experts has discussed it at length to be
certain it serves your best interest.
We have a few options on how you can provide and
pay for the whole life coverage that your family
needs. Many whole life policies call for premiums to
be paid for your entire life or to age 100. But we also
offer permanent life coverage with guaranteed cash
values (and the potential to earn dividends, which are
not guaranteed) through policies that offer a limited
period of premium payments.
First, we offer “10 Pay Life” and “20 Pay Life.”
Consider paying premiums for 10 or 20 years, and
never having to pay for the coverage again. The plan
is “paid up” and no more premiums are due. The plan
stays in force, the death benefit remains intact and the
guaranteed cash value continues to grow.
A plan with similar benefits is “Life Paid Up at 65.”
The difference over 10 or 20 Pay Life plans is that this
permanent product requires you to pay premiums until
age 65. Then, premiums stop (just in time for retirement),
but the plan remains in force.
Finally, the ultimate in limited pay is our Single
Premium Life product. Imagine buying life insurance
— permanent life insurance — and only paying one
single premium? It’s possible.
To learn more about these products, our long-term
care insurance, disability income or retirement
products, please call us today.

EDW’S NEW “CHRISTIANS AT RISK” CAMPAIGN Last year, the Knights came to you for support to
care and feed for Christians in the Middle East who
had fled their homes because of ISIS. That campaign
was part of a national effort by the Knights of
Columbus called Christians at Risk With your help,
our local council donated more than $12K to that
campaign which, in turn, contributed to more than $2
million in assistance this year. That is on top of the
more than $12 Million that the Knights have raised for
this effort since 2014.
During this special time between the celebration of
the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ in Bethlehem
(December 25th), and the 40 days until we celebrate
the Presentation of the Infant Jesus in Jerusalem
(February 2nd), may the Knights, families and friends
of EDW open their hearts to our persecuted brothers
and sisters in the Middle East.
We will provide more information about a new
Knights of Columbus campaign to save a specific town
in Iraq via email updates over the coming weeks. The
goal of the Supreme Council is to have each Council
participate to reach their organizational goal of raising

$2 Million dollars for this campaign.
This issue of the Knight Life presents some of the
material that is available on the Supreme Council’s
website. Please consider a generous gift, during this
season of giving, to that region of the world from where we first received God’s greatest gift, His only begotten
Son, who offered Himself for us and our salvation on Golgotha.
