State Deputy’s Message
My Brother Knights,
The Fraternal Survey is now due and councils need to also
complete their audits and submit them both to the state and
Supreme. If you have not submitted your 365 and 185, the list of
elected council officers and council chairmen, you can still can send
them in both to the state and Supreme.
The second half for the State per capita has been mailed and
you should have received this in the mail. Please pay this as soon
as you receive it.
We are now beginning to plan for our convention in May.
Registration information and the “call to convention” will be mailed
shortly. Please make every effort to attend and participate on both
days of the convention, Friday and Saturday.
The Father McGivney Founders Day
membership incentive and award program
will be finalized on March 29. Now is the
time to increase your membership intake to
win the membership prize in your Diocese
by Council size. All Grand Knights and DD’s
were e-mailed copies of this incentive.
If you still need this information,
please contact the State Membership Director, Mike Vaclavicek.
We wish you continued success in all your programs and
membership. May your Council achieve star council and star district
this fraternal year.

Brothers,
Let me begin by stating that we are almost through
winter, and I know this because pitchers and catchers report to
spring training in about 2 weeks, and at the end of the month,
your NJKofC Polar Penguins will again join thousands of other
lunatics in the cold Atlantic Ocean as we take the Polar Bear
Plunge for Special Olympics NJ.
As I write this, our team is in 2nd place, barely $120
behind the 1st place team from Little Silver. With your help, we
could catch them this year. Please go to the website and pick a
Penguin you know and make a donation toward their individual
goal. DD Dave Coppola and FDD Gary Seals lead our team in
donations. They have been working very hard since October to
raise funds. Please consider a donation, thank you. Our team
goal is $40,000 this year, after raising over $36,000 last year.
Having just come back from the March 4 Life in
Washington, I feel blessed again to be in these United States of
America. Not only do we have a President that respects life and
is behind the cause, the Vice President came and gave a speech
to the crowd, not a video as in the past, but a live, breathing
person.
Our State Deputy and State Secretary marched along with
the 500,000 marchers, and there were more young people this
year than I ever saw before, and that bodes well for this country.
Easter will be upon us soon and right behind that is the
annual NJ State Convention in Wildwood. In past years, we have
seen attendance fall a bit and would like to see that change as
this is your State Council, you should know what happened last
year and what is happening in 17 – 18. Is your Council in line for
an award at the Convention this year? Come on down and pick it
up. Even if your Council is not getting an award, please
consider coming down and spending a nice enjoyable weekend
“Down the Shore” with your Brother Knights. It is a nice way to
introduce your family to your Brothers, as well as spend some
time relaxing by the shore, the ocean breeze washing over you,
putting you at ease from whatever is on your mind. As they say
on the Price is Right, “COME ON DOWN!!!”

Chaplain of the Year
Application to State Chairman: DUE BY: March 31, 2017.
The NJ State Council is aware of the many wonderful spiritual and fraternal activities done by our
local council Chaplains. In a way to show our appreciation for all their service and to show our gratitude
for their vocation we ask that each Council that has an appointed Chaplain submit a detailed resume
for consideration of the State Chaplain of the Year by March 31, 2017 to the state chairman.
The recipient of the Award will be announced at the NJ State Convention in May.
The Resume should list the accomplishments of your Chaplain in the following areas:
Church activities
Community Involvement
Leadership
Pastoral care
Evangelization
Lay Apostate Development
Parish Ministry
Knights of Columbus involvement
This list is provided, but is not all inclusive, as a guide of areas that the Committee will evaluate for
selection of the most outstanding Chaplain of the Year. We ask that each Council submit its nomination
by the cutoff date mentioned above.
Please participate! The honor of "Outstanding K of C Chaplain" would be cherished by the
recipient, his Council, his Parish and the Diocese.

Happy Winter, Brothers,
It was good to see you at the Grand Knights mid-term meeting on January 7th at St. John
Newman Center in Piscataway. Many of you came out in spite of the snow and made it a
successful meeting. The material that was presented by the Programs and Membership team was
informative and vital for you to finish out a successful second half of your Columbian year. For
those of you who missed the meeting, you can review the material online at the NJ KoC Website,
where you can view presentations from General programs, Culture of Life and the Squires.
With winter in full swing it is time to button up those winter coats and brace for the cold. In the
same way, I hope your Council’s are helping the disadvantaged children in your area to do the
same. This is easily accomplished with Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids programs. It is never
too late and there is always someone in need. Order a box and distribute to the shelters or
Diocesan programs. If you are feeling the cold, so are these children. Please don’t delay.
As I reminded you at the GK meeting, there are very critical forms due to Supreme shortly.
Form 1728 (Survey of Fraternal Activities ) - Due Jan 31 - keeps KoC “legal”;
Form 1295-2 (Semiannual Council Audit) - Due Feb 15 - keeps your council solvent;
February program considerations should be:

Senior Citizen of the Year Award - Council application due 02/01to your DD;
Shield Award - Council application due 02/01 to your District Deputy
Habitat for Humanity - Council application due 02/01 to your District Deputy
Food for the Hungry - February is the hardest month for food banks and the needy
New Eyes for the Needy – Start collections in your church and medical outlets
Early March programs dates to be considered and acted upon soon…
“Keep Christ Before Us” Lent/Easter coloring book order due 03/01 to the chairman;
Bishop Dougherty Scholarship Application - due 03/01 to Grand Knight;
Fr John Murray Scholarship Application - due 03/01 to Grand Knight;

State Council and Supreme. Remember, have fun and work together to Protect God’s Kingdom.
Keep the Faith, Jim Sweeney, FDD NJ State Program Director

The pictures below were taken by members of the NJ Knights of Columbus that attended the March
for Life in Washington on January 27. An estimated 500 thousand marchers endured a windy, chilly
day, but it was worth it if Roe V Wade is overturned and abortions are made illegal, as most of us feel
they should be. More pictures available on Facebook at : New Jersey State Council Event Pictures

Brothers,
Even though the weather did not co-operate, the midterm Grand Knights meeting was well
attended. The theme of the meeting was the legacy that you will leave as a Grand Knight, District
Deputy, and what we will leave as a Membership Team. We stressed the fact that between us all,
team work will definitely lead to our goal of STAR COUNCIL.
Even if it is not this year it will be in years to come. The subject of
retention came up and if it is done by the guide lines of Supreme and
the State it will help us retain members not lose them. We should
always spend more time bringing in new members than finding ways to
lose them. The importance of Round Tables was stressed even more,
showing the positive influence on the Council and the definite help to
the Pastor of the Parish where the Round Table has been started.
As time goes on, we will have an opportunity to start a new Council in one of those Parishes where a
Round Table exists. These Councils may be of different ethnic backgrounds (Polish, Spanish,
Vietnamese, Filipino) just to name a few.
Our State incentives offer every Council a chance to save money on their per capita. This year
again Supreme has instituted the $4.50 per active member to go towards Supremes per capita as
long as you make STAR COUNCIL .
Other additional Supreme incentive are::
COUNCIL INCENTIVE - Councils that recruit six or more members between January 1, 2017 and
March 31, 2017 will receive a DOMESTIC CHURCH KIOSK & BOOKLET SET. Councils that recruit
twelve or more members between January 1, 2017 and June 1, 2017 will also receive a Domestic
Church Kiosk & Booklet Set. Councils that qualify for the Domestic Church Kiosk incentive during the
third quarter of the fraternal year will receive a Booklet Set refill if they qualify again during the fourth
quarter.
RECRUITERS INCENTIVE -- Knight of Columbus members who recruit new members between
January 1, 2017 and March 31, 2017 will receive 1,500 VIP POINTS per new member that they
recruit.
FIELD AGENTS INCENTIVE -- Field Agents who service Councils that attain one or more levels of
the Star Council Award by June 30, 2017 will receive 17,000 VIP POINTS
DISTRICT INCENTIVE - District Deputies will receive 1,000 VIP POINTS for each first degree that is
held within their district from January 1, 2017 through March 31, 2017. If at least one first degree is
held within the same district in each month (January, February and March), the district deputy will
receive an additional 5,000 VIP points. In order to receive credit, a Form 450 must be submitted to
the Ceremonials Department for each degree held. The deadline for Form 450 submissions for this
contest is April 15, 2017.
Remember to form a strong partnership with your Insurance Agent and anytime you need help with
membership do not hesitate to call the team.
Your friend in Christ,
Mike Vaclavicek, FDD State Membership Chairman

Brothers:
We had a very productive meeting with the Grand Knights on January 7, where we
discussed upcoming programs and convention awards. Hopefully, your council participated in the
March for Life to show our support for pro-life legislation, like the Pain-Capable Child Protection
Act. Your council should be ramping up its pro-life efforts as we approach the convention, and
focusing on key programs:
Turn Off the TV Day. Hopefully, your council is well under way towards participation in this
program and has already had members send out letters to the networks and pledge cards to
members and parishioners. Then all we have to do is start off the Lenten season by turning off
our TVs on Ash Wednesday, March 1. A sample letter, addresses for the networks, and other
resources are available from the web site at this .
Adoption As An Option. We need to promote adoption as an alternative to abortion, and what
better way to do it than to advertise it publicly and encourage people to adopt by helping to
underwrite the cost of doing so. Our car magnets do both! Sell them to raise money and then
display them proudly on your cars! Get together with other councils in your District to save
money through a volume purchase of the magnets. For example, 100 are $2.75 each, while 200
are $2.15 each, a $0.60 savings per magnet! In a 5 council District, 200 would give each council
40 magnets to sell for $4-$5 each. Everything you need to order them can be found at this LINK.
Diapers for Babies. This program continues to be one of the
best ways to promote life and to show that we are around to
support the mother who chooses it after the baby is born.
Please increase your participation in the coming months
and be sure to report your achievements through the form at
this LINK. The State plans to issue a press release after
the convention based on program reports to convention. Let us
show to all New Jerseyans the tens of thousands of diapers,
wipes, and formula we provide to underprivileged mothers-to-be
and combat the lies of the pro-abortion lobby.
20/20 Project. I must continue to urge you to participate in this most important program. One of
its goals is to have 2,400 Masses offered for the Protection of Babies in the Womb and Their
Families by December 31, 2017. So far we have 739. We have a long way to go! Please
schedule a Mass and report it on the form at this LINK! Want to help promote the cause on social
media? Then add the project’s logo to your Facebook Profile Picture by going HERE. Finally,
please consider a donation to the cause. Those magnets and other materials cost money, and
they need our help.
Keep fighting the good fight, Brothers!
Vivat Jesus!

My Brother Knights & Sir Knights,
Well winter has set in, we are past the Christmas season, ringing in a New Year, Installation of the 6th
Archbishop in Newark, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, a Presidential Inauguration, March for Life, just to name a
few. Many say winter is here and not much is going on, doesn’t sound like it. Now we rush into the shortest
month of the year and we hope the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow! That being said hopefully your
Assembly should have filled out its fraternal survey and submitted it by January 31st. There is always time
to recruit. Remember, recruitment is a 365 day of the year job. Food for thought, we have a little over
62,000 members in the Knights of Columbus in New Jersey and just a little over 10,000 4th degree
members! Many brothers to choose from if you take the time and explain the benefits of the 4th degree and
ask them to join us!
MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT OPPURTUNITY Fourth Degree members are united in their dedication to patriotism informed by our Catholic faith. The patriotic spirit of every Knights of Columbus member can be strengthened if he chooses to become a member of the Fourth Degree. To effectively support patriotism, the Fourth Degree aIways needs additional members. We encourage Third Degree Knights to take the patriotic degree of the Order. No matter if you are in the 1st or the 2nd District Fourth degree there will be
an opportunity to ask your brothers to take that final step and become a Fourth
Degree member and reach that final stage of becoming a Knight in full. It also
gives them the chance to become a member of the most visible arm of the
Knights, the Color Corps. Although it is not required again, we can always use
your help. The Color Corps is what most people remember, so please consider supporting us! Both
Districts will be hosting and Exemplification in April, details to be forwarded soon!
SCHOLARSHIP OPPURTUNITY
Many times we are asked about scholarship money for college students, in the past there is money
there but applications are not submitted so I have attached 2 links that have to be filled out and submitted
by March 1st. Start filling them out now time is running out!! Apply for both, good luck.

MILITARY SUPPORT OPPURTUNITY
Please consider supporting our Military! We have 2 great programs that highlight our action to help.
Military Chaplain Scholarship is an ongoing commitment, if your Assembly hasn’t made a contribution
lately, please consider it. Also the Send a Hero home for the holidays, is in need of funds as they had
another great year and need to replenish for next year, again please consider a donation!
In closing, don’t forget your loved ones this month make sure you do something a little extra special for
Valentine’s Day, without our loved ones support the Knights would not be what we are!

Take Ownership of the Knights of Columbus In the New Year we make resolutions for what we want to do better. Before we figure out what to do better we review what we did in the prior year, so we know what we did wrong and need to do better. My resolutions are to make someone laugh every day, to pray more and help someone who needs my help, every day. First laughter brings joy and the world needs more joy because joy springs from love and Christ’s sacrifice gives each of us a promise of a reward in heaven. As Catholics we need to help those in need. In the Gospel Jesus calls on us to help the least among us, because when we do so, we do so for him. As for praying more, I have always had a devotion to the Rosary, and though some people say that the Rosary is “boring” in its’ repetition, in my eyes it is Catholic Zen, a form of Catholic meditation. In the repetition of the time honored prayers, you try to clear your mind and focus on the mystery for that decade. The more I pray the Rosary, the more at peace I am, for often times the repetition clears my head. It gives me peace and quiet, which is so hard to find in today’s world with all the crazy distractions we face. And it is in that silence and peace that I see more clearly. I do my best thinking during and after praying. (Some will say that I should pray the rosary continuously to improve my thinking even more). That’s what I have resolved to do and here’s what I would like each of you to consider for you to resolve to do this year…… What I am asking each of you to resolve to do this year, is to take ownership of the Knights of Columbus. Take ownership of your council by getting involved in one or more of our programs, or by starting a program in your council that needs to be done in your parish or community. Take ownership of your faith by taking time out every day to pray. (It might give you peace and help you think more clearly as well.) And take ownership of the Order by taking advantage of our insurance program. 58% of our members do not have insurance for themselves from the Order. That is a statistic that amazes me. If you read Faith and Fraternalism, which was written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Order, on page 35 the author states the following. “During the first few years of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. McGivney worked exclusively on our insurance program”. For all the good works of charity we do and the strength we get from sharing our faith with our brothers, none of that is possible without our insurance program. It is that shared protection which Fr. Mc Givney founded us for. So, are you an “owner” of the Order of the Knights of Columbus? Fr. McGivney wanted every Catholic family to be protected by our insurance program. Make a resolution to take the time to sit with your agent and find out how the largest Catholic insurance company in the world can help your family. That’s who we are and what we do. Who Do You Trust? Worthy Brother,
For those of us who grew up in the days of Black & White television, you may recall this afternoon show
starring Johnny Carson. Fast forward to the days of the internet and cybersecurity: The integrity and safety of
the State Website AND any transmissions to each of you are just one of the reasons that I am 24/7. As the
need arises I request permission from our State Deputy to address each of you on a few Internet Security Tips
that may / or may not involve communications through the mail server.
We "scrub and remove" over 92,000 pieces of perceived Spam each and every day through software
such as SpamAssassin, and as the name implies, it kills the bad mail. Repeated or threatening mail is reported
to SpamCop, an industry supported team that has been used by me to prosecute offenders.
How do you know who to trust?
1. Trust But Verify! When in doubt ask - forward complete e-mail to [email protected] with a request for
me to verify. Do not open, but until confirmed, do not delete either. If it is Spam, I might need for you to send
me the full "header" so we can track the IP address of the sender.
2. Be aware of non-descript e-mail. It "might" come from someone you know...maybe not. For instance, I
received an e-mail today from (name changed just in case) from William Jones; the subject had only "FW:
important message"; the body simply said Hello, new message please read;
and there was a hyperlink. DO NOT Click on a hyperlink unless you know WHAT it is, regardless of source!
3. I used to use all caps in the subject line for authentication – however, since the major ISPs block mail where
the subject line is all caps. So now, you should recognize official state e-mails when the first word of the subject
line is ALL CAPS...but there is more. I will also state the purpose in the subject line (i.e. December Issue The
Crusader, etc.)
4. If there is an attachment to the e-mail, the first two words in the subject line will read: SAFE attachment and
the first sentence in the body will describe the attachment and the file type (PDF, Word document, etc.).
5. My closing will always have "Vivat Jesus!!!" – Note: 3 exclamation points.
6. Time permitting, but always on a regular basis, I will include text below my name with the "Notice" regarding
why you are on the list and the procedure for you to "opt-out " or unsubscribe.
7. Protect your address book from "Phishing": A real simple method is to add a fictitious new name to your
address book. The new "person's" first name is 0000_; their last name is 0000_ (those are zeroes); do not enter
any e-mail address. When you click save, that new address will migrate to the top of your list and a phishing
program will get caught in an endless loop at address #1, but not be able to reach address #2.
8. There are only 2 "real" e-mail addresses that will utilize the @njkofc.org extension - [email protected]
and [email protected] - delete all other "official sounding" e-mails. Also, I will not be sending you
invoice, faxes, confirmation of orders, etc. Do not reply to Spam mail - it just confirms that they
have found a live person...and you will get slammed with even more junk mail!
9. Although rare, be aware that there are embedded viruses within the body of an e-mail. For this reason it is
better to delete before opening, any suspicious e-mails.
10. If you are sending me legitimate e-mail, PLEASE put the subject in the subject box. I receive over 300
pieces of e-mail every day (more right at the beginning and end of a fraternal year), I sort and open
based on priority.
Be Safe / Be Aware, Vivat Jesus!!!
