President’s Message:
James Fenwick
Well, the year is half over and I hope you are all doing well and staying busy. Not sure about the wheat this year but considering we have only had 5 inches of rain since last October, it doesn't look bad.
I'm not sure if any of you have ever had the problem we've had this year with bidding work and getting the job to only find out they're not doing the job until next year. Then you take on more work just to find out next year starts June 1st. Or, you spend 3 days going over a machine to take to a big job only to pull out of the driveway and blow a tire or throw the belts off and lose a hydraulic cylinder. Frustrating to the say the least, but other than that its been a nice spring, all two days of it. Our average temperature should be 85 and we've been bumping 100, but all is well as long as you can overcome and adapt.
Looking forward to the summer convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It should be a fun and cool time. I hope to see some of you there. On a personal note, my eldest son left the business to pursue other options and that's okay. My grandson is growing like a weed and will be 1 year old in July. He already likes dirt and tractors. My daughter is doing well with work and being a mother to Oliver. My youngest, who is 16, is becoming a proficient equipment operator and my wife does a great job keeping us all in line. I hope all of you and yours have a great summer and stay cool. Remember to take time to smell the roses and occasionally pick up a couple for your wife.

Meet KLICA
Contractor Members Notice:
The KLICA Board of Directors will discuss possible amendment to the Kansas Land
Improvement Contractors Association By-Laws at the July 19 meeting in
Lancaster, Kansas. Amendments could include a possible increase in Contractor
Member Dues. Kansas did not increase Contractor Member Dues the last time
National LICA had an increase.
Due to this and the rising costs of doing business the Board of Directors will
discuss and possibly take action on a possible by-law amendment and associated
dues increase at the July 19 meeting.
The July meeting will be held in conjunction with the Modern Ag Field Day in
Lancaster, Kansas and will begin at 2:00 pm. The address of the Field Day is 9419
Hamilton Rd, Lancaster, Kansas.

KLICA News & Information July 2018
On the Other Side of the Dozer Blade by Margaret Smelser
The rain gauge showed almost an inch this morning,
after a few hours of thunder, lightening and wind in
the night. We need inches, the ponds are getting low,
but it all helps. Our pastures are still ok; it looks like
the hay crop will be light. Another new calf this
morning, “Little Granny’s” first. Still more to go, our
bull was too young.
David & Lee continue to be busy - work is always
varied. They were cutting up trees they pushed out
and the builder told David he didn't know he was a
tree man. A convenience for a customer. Accommodation jobs aren’t always profitable but
can be good advertising. They’ve been dealing with the usual aggravations; broken hoses,
a hole in a radiator and alternator on the 7.
We lost a long time friend recently. Some knew him as “Stocking Cap Ike”. He and his wife
moved to this area a very young K.C. couple. They made a good life in spite of predictions.
They were active in the community, Ike was Fire Chief for McLouth’s Volunteer Fire
Department. His memories card could speak for every farmer (or dirt mover) - “For this
farmer the worries are over, lie down your head, your time has been struggles enough. Put
the tractor in the shed”.
Our daughter, Mai and grandson came for a few days recently. Our 90+ days were quite a
change from Wisconsin weather. She took a lot of plants home for their yard. This old farm
will always draw her back.
In looking over my collection of KLICA memorabilia which escaped the fire, I found I've
been sharing chapters of our lives since 2006. So many changes, almost like reading a
diary.
David has been working through a lot of pain,
finally diagnosed as spinal stenosis. An injection
has helped some, eventually he will need surgery.
As Lloyd always did, he “keeps on keeping on” in
spite of the pain. He’s hoping to get through this
busiest time. These Smelser men have a lot of
“gumption” - one of my Mom’s sayings.
Out sympathy to Lou Zimmerman and her family
in their loss of Warren, long time member of
KLICA. The world is always poorer when a good
man is called Home.
Lloyd is out spraying in the pasture & it will soon be “what’s for dinner?”
Take extra care during these 95-100 degree days. One serious accident can mean no
tomorrow. Life is a gift - take care of it.
An afterthought - Leavenworth County would look like an oasis to so many further west -
though this area is on the edge of the drought maps. We need to count our blessings.
