Kids in the Cassims, Noormohameds, Moosas, Essacks, Omarjees and Osmans were diagnosed with chicken pox during the vacation. It started at the end of November and went on until January 2013. So, as you can see chicken pox is highly contagious! Symptoms of chicken pox are nausea, loss of appetite, aching muscles, headache and very high fever. The pox starts off with little water blisters which grow over the next 24 hours. The pox usually lasts from 4 to 10 days depending on the individual. The spreading of the chicken pox can be prevented by isolating the individual. But in a household with 4 children it is nearly impossible. Each of the above mentioned families had two to three sick children. When the first child was nearly healed then the second child got infected and then the other children. Nearly all the children had chicken pox while they were at home. Only one child had it while they went on vacation to Cape Town. So, for that period of time, it was rest, television, play station and sleep. Our mums are thankful that everybody is well again and nobody contracted shingles! Dad drove us to the farm on a sunny Saturday morning. I was six years old. First father had to fix my bike’s flat tyre in a hurry. I wasn’t looking where I was going and landed in a ditch. The back wheel nearly went over me. I lost one of my front teeth. Oh no! What now? Mom phoned to the dentist and he said not to worry, it was not a permanent tooth. I got an appointment for the next day. I slept very bad that night. I was dreaming about my fall and lost my tooth at least three times that night in my nightmare. It could have been worse! I could have lost all my teeth and looked like my grandfather! FACT TO THINK ABOUT

We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%! For example your brother knocks over a glass of cold drink onto your Math book. You have no control over what just happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react. You curse, scold or hit your brother? He breaks down in tears or scold you back and a big fight starts with Mother scolding both of you. Here is what could have and should have happened: Milk splashes over your book. Little brother starts to cry. You gently say: “It’s ok, Billy, you just need to be more careful next time.”

PARENTING:* Parenting is a partnership – it cannot be left to just one parent.* The challenges that our children face today should be understood. This is possible by listening with empathy which would lead to bonding.* Parents must be a good example to their children because children mimic what they see and hear.
