GUN KILLINGS: FEAR MOUNTS
Drug turf war fearGARY VAN DYK
Abig drug bust is a significant blowagainst the drug scourge, but the gunviolence that followed are leaving resi-
dents terrified. While residents applaud the drug blitz,
they are aghast at what appears to be a drugwar among gangs battling for control of thetrade.Last week, members of the Border Police
and Crime Intelligence conducted an intelli-gence-led operation at a house in MozartStreet, Delft South, where they recovered alarge stash of drugs and money. They seized about 16 000 mandrax tablets,
1 265 kg of tik, close to R200 000 in cash aswell as several stolen cellphones and SIMcards. The estimated value of these drugs is
aboutR2.2million.A39-year-old suspectwasarrested. While these actions are hitting drug deal-
ers and thedrug supplyhard, policehavenotruled out recent shootings to be drug or gangrelated.
ShootingsOn Sunday at about 20:35 two people were
shot in Vuurlelie Street, Roosendal, whenJarraud Manuel (18), was found with multi-ple gunshot wounds, andMeaganHendricks(19), with one shot to the head.Manuel died at the scene and Hendricks
died on the way to Tygerberg Hospital.Police are investigating two charges of
murder and have arrested a 19-year-old forquestioning.Elsies River is also a horror zone. The brutal murder of four men in Con-
naught Estate left residents slack-jawed.Alfredo Fortuin (24), Ronald Faber (35),
Vicky Julies (25), and John Booysen (45),were all found in a pool of blood in the cara-van in which they were sleeping in CareStreet.Pastor Allen Rogers from Cravenby said
that there have been a lot of rumours aboutan escalation of gang activity because of po-lice action against drug dens.“We are glad that the police are doing
these operations, and they must not stop,”he said.“What we must be aware of is that these
actions have consequences with a shortageof drugs.“The police must increase their presence
in the areas where they know gang activitywill be taking place.”Police are investigating all the incidents.
Police examine the drugsconfiscated in theoperation last week.

Sharing the gift of hearingGARY VAN DYK
Seeing is believingbuthelping tohear is theaim of a Ravensmead housewife.
Last year Louisa Da Silva, who sufferedfrom profound hearing loss in both ears, was fortunate enough to undergo a cochlearimplant operation, and now she is set onhelping a woman in Elsies River.
She explained that the operation was ahuge success and it improved her hearingby up to 70 %.
“I am doing well with my new hearingaid,” she says.
“The benefits are immense and I amthankful for this God-given opportunity. Iam feeling more confident and can clearlyhear some sounds that I never heard before.
“This operation was done by the team ofThe Stellenbosch Cochlear Implant Unitand Iwas fortunate enough to receive finan-cial assistance (R30 000) from Spar Head Of-fice after I raised R13 000 on my own.
“The process transformed not only myhearing, but alsomy life and perspective onlife. In gratitude, I now humbly would liketo assist others in having the same kind ofopportunity and change of livelihood.”
Da Silva explained further that after herimplant she got to know about the circum-stances of Nicolene Julius from Clarke Es-
tate in Elsies River.“She was a patient at Tygerberg Hospital
who became deaf in 2011 as a result of men-ingitis and it left her partly paralysed andin a coma.
“It also resulted in a complete loss of hear-ing and it was a traumatic experience tolose her hearing at that age.
“She is in desperate need of a cochlear im-plant.”
Da Silva has already started the processof raising funds over the past few months
with appeals to businesses but she is busyorganising two functions to help with thesecosts.
The first eventwill be a jazzy disco onFri-day 17May at the RavensmeadCivic Centrestarting at 19:30.
Tickets are R50 with music provided byDJRandyandyoucanbringalongyourownrefreshments as well. She is also planninga high tea on Sunday 2 June.V For further information and booking for the eventDa Silva can be contacted on 082 780 3757.

Learning online is happening at the ShilohCentre of Learning in Bellville South. This independent school that caters
mostly for childrenwhose parents are frompreviously disadvantaged areas, is leadingthe way to new methods of learning, andmore importantly, the learners thriving.Denver Brevis, a member of the school
governing body, pointed out that the schoolstrives to offer affordable education to par-ents and endeavours to keep the school feesat a reasonable rate.“The mission of our school is to provide
a holistic learning environment to equipeach child fully for the future,” he said.“Looking back over the past 20 to 30
years, I don’t think anyone would have im-agined the development that would takeplace up to now, technologically and other-wise.“Quite frankly, I don’t think anyone
knows exactly what the future world thatour children will live in looks like, yet weso glibly say that we are preparing them forthat world.“What we do know is that if we can help
them stay abreast with developments asthey happen, we are in a better position toequip and prepare them.”Brevis pointed out that one of the reasons
so many children fail to be enthusiasticabout school and drop out or fail at high
school or university, is because school inthemainhasnot kept upwith global trends.“Chalk and talk has been the main mode
of teaching since theRenaissance,” he says.“It is the only institution which would
still be recognised by our great grandpar-ents, should they visit us today.“In order to stay abreast of the technolog-
ical developments, striving for academicexcellence, Shiloh now offers online educa-tion for Grade 10 in 2013, and will be offer-ing online education in Grade 10 and 11 in2014 and Grade 10 to 12 as from 2015.“This programmeenables our students to
write the Independent Examination Boardmatric, ensuring excellent preparation fortertiary education and the world of work.”He added that this type of learning also
equips learners for a digital world, a largerscope of subjects, excellence in quality andgreater opportunity for self-learning anddisciplined habitswhichwill improve theirability to be successful in the world of to-morrow.“Interactive, engaging material has been
developed. Learner material is designed indifferent ways with lots of techniques thatcan be used to make the content really in-teractive and exciting. Through puzzles, games, and self-evaluation learners cantake themselves through study material.”V For more information about the project at theschool contact Alicia Snell on 021 951 1956.

Central AFC will be looking to pushthemselves up on the Northern Sub-urbs Football Association Super
League standings when they meet currentlog leaders Island Rovers, who also have thesame agenda in mind, when the two sidesmeet at Salberau Park on Saturday.
Coach Giles Juilies is however adamantthat Central will achieve the planned top twofinish, come the end of the season, but sayshis side will have to dig deep against IslandRovers, if they are to get a good result.
“Island Rovers are a very good side, which
means we have to really dig deep if we areto get a good result against them. The otherthing is that we have been very unlucky toconcede soft goals in our last matches thatwe either drew or lost.
Working hardThe players seem to switch off, immediate-
ly after scoring a goal and that has seen usgive easy goals to the opposition at very cru-cial times. We have been working reallyhard on our mistakes and I hope we don’tsee a repeat in our upcoming matches.’’
Central AFC are unbeaten in their last twoleague matches, but lost against Riverside
Rangers last Sunday.Island Rovers are a confident bunch, they
are still unbeaten in the league. “We wantto continue our unbeaten run and put on an-other sterling performance, especially forour supporters, who have proven to havefound their voice again,” says spokesmanfor the club, Anthony Sekuie.
“Apart from the newly-found self beliefamongst the players, our supporters have al-so been our major source of inspiration inour turnaround of fortunes.’’
Riverside Rangers goalkeeper PepeJacobs says the league match against Invin-cible Cravenby will be a tough one for his
side, but also takes comfort in the Avonwoodside’s good form of late. Invincible Cravenbycan also no longer be regarded as a closedbook, he says.
Tougher“We expect a tougher Invincible Cravenby
than the side we played against last season, purely because they have shown that theycan hold their own against the big guns ofthe Super League.
“They gave us a tough match and we ex-pect them to fancy their chances against useven more, because they have adapted wellto top flight football.”
