The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was designed by the architect Franz Schwechten as a memorial to Kaiser Wilhelm I. Built from 1891 to 1895, the Romanesque Revival church in the shape of a Latin cross was the focal point of the neighborhood. Having suffered extensive damage in World War II, the ruins were preserved as a memorial. Two new buildings by Egon Eierman were constructed between 1959 and 1961: a hexagonal tower housing a wedding and baptismal chapel, and an octagonal main building.
