WHY NORTH2?

• Paris Agreement: reducing carbon emissions to reduce global warming < 1.5˚C

• EU goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050 & 40 GW of electrolyzers by 2030

• We need to start today! To scale up and achieve cost reduction of green hydrogen

• NortH2 is designed to kickstart large-scale development of green hydrogen in Northwest Europe

OFFSHORE ELECTROLYSISNortH2 views on increasing installed capacity towards 2040

Further LCOH reduction due to:

• Scale up & learning curve effects –> More mature supply chains

• Offshore H2 production –> Lower offshore infrastructure cost

First order estimates indicate that after 2030:

• LCOH dependent on “offshore factor”; cost

increase from moving components offshore

• Break-even distance onshore vs offshore H2

production ranges between 100-250 km

THE NORTH OF THE NETHERLANDS AS THE PERFECT INCUBATORThe North of the Netherlands is uniquely positioned for the development of the green hydrogen value chain

Security of supply can be

assured from the start,

which is key for consumers

to switch from a fossil basis

to green hydrogen.

Proximity to resources Transport & Storage

Capacity

Access to knowledge,

suppliers & markets

PRE-FEASIBILITY INSIGHTSThe NortH2 approach has potential to meet its ambitions, based on the outcomes of the pre-feasibility study

Technically feasible

• Wind farm developments, green hydrogen and infrastructure can be realized in the envisioned time frame

Market

• Future market for feedstock with only H2 demand

• Large future market for conversion of industrial heating (direct and indirect) from natural gas to hydrogen

Large program -> potential to reduce costs

• Main cost components in windfarms, power infrastructure and electrolysis;

• Programmatic approach to lower component costs and allow optimization over the value chain

• Commercial optimization will enable further reduction of the LCOH

SCOPE CURRENT FEASIBILITY STUDY

➢ Demonstrate realistic and balanced implementation of

green H2 for targeted market segments

KEY POLICY ASKS TO CLOSE THE GAP

Policies required to realize NortH2 ambitions:

Robust commercial, financial and policy

frameworks for development of

hydrogen supply and demand

Reimbursement of offshore

transport infrastructure costs

to create a level playing field

Dedicated offshore-wind-for-

hydrogen development of 4 GW

in 2030 and 10 GW in 2040

Policies enabling green hydrogen

purchases at competitive cost, e.g.

Contract-for-Differences
