WE NOT I

• When communicating about the program use “We” not “I” or “My”– The program is not yours there are

many people that will help with your program

– Get more buy-in from everyone when you leave out the “I” word

Year Round Program

• To establish a championship program you must be all in– Summer Ball– Fall Ball–Winter Workouts– Spring Ball• Create opportunities for players to get

better, and the program will get better

• Attitude—have complete control over your attitude

• Will not coach a bad attitude

• Believe—in yourself, your teammates, and coaches

• Have to believe in yourself to have success in life• Effort—have

complete control over the effort you give in life

• PLAY HARD AND WITH CLASS

PARENTS

• Need concise expectations for parents in your program

• Need to be brutally honest with them• They need to be informed that they

are part of the program and to represent it with class

BOOSTER CLUB

• DO YOU NEED TO HAVE ONE?– Challenges• Small School• Low economic area• Seems to be very little parent involvement

– Hinkley H.S.—if I knew then what I know now would have done something

– Always going to find parents willing to help

BOOSTER CLUBSSET UP CORRECTLY IS A HUGE

ASSET• Clearly define the purpose of the

booster club• Clearly define the roles that the board

members will serve• Get parents of players that are good

players and are going to be a part of your program until they graduate (MARC JOHNSON)

• DON’T TOUCH THE MONEY (MARC JOHNSON)

COACHING STAFFGoes without saying how important your assistants are

• GHS staff—Mike Letofsky, Matt Kitashima, Cory Chandler, Wes Smock, Rick Spriggs, Jon Sanely, and Brian Callaghan

• Consistent—try your best to keep coaches around for long time

• Share your beliefs about the program• Loyalty—HUGE PIECE• Important role the lower levels play to prepare players for a

shot at varsity baseball• All coaches represent the program they need to understand

this• Willing to communicate to/with you and other coaches• Willingness to learn

can’t sit down and talk to another coach
