KEYS TO BUILDING A CHAMPIONSHIP HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
PROGRAMWhat does it take?
Parents, coaches, administrators, community, and players
WE NOT I
• When communicating about the program use “We” not “I” or “My”– The program is not yours there are
many people that will help with your program
– Get more buy-in from everyone when you leave out the “I” word
Year Round Program
• To establish a championship program you must be all in– Summer Ball– Fall Ball–Winter Workouts– Spring Ball• Create opportunities for players to get
better, and the program will get better
FIRST STEP TO THE PROCESS
What do you want your program to be known for?
NON NEGOTIABLES THINGS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO
HANG YOUR HAT ON NEED TO BE COMMUNICATED EACH
YEAR AND THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
GRANDVIEW BASEBALLA.B.E.
• Attitude—have complete control over your attitude
• Will not coach a bad attitude
• Believe—in yourself, your teammates, and coaches
• Have to believe in yourself to have success in life• Effort—have
complete control over the effort you give in life
• PLAY HARD AND WITH CLASS
PARENTS
• Need concise expectations for parents in your program
• Need to be brutally honest with them• They need to be informed that they
are part of the program and to represent it with class
BOOSTER CLUB
• DO YOU NEED TO HAVE ONE?– Challenges• Small School• Low economic area• Seems to be very little parent involvement
– Hinkley H.S.—if I knew then what I know now would have done something
– Always going to find parents willing to help
BOOSTER CLUBSSET UP CORRECTLY IS A HUGE
ASSET• Clearly define the purpose of the
booster club• Clearly define the roles that the board
members will serve• Get parents of players that are good
players and are going to be a part of your program until they graduate (MARC JOHNSON)
• DON’T TOUCH THE MONEY (MARC JOHNSON)
COACHING STAFFGoes without saying how important your assistants are
• GHS staff—Mike Letofsky, Matt Kitashima, Cory Chandler, Wes Smock, Rick Spriggs, Jon Sanely, and Brian Callaghan
• Consistent—try your best to keep coaches around for long time
• Share your beliefs about the program• Loyalty—HUGE PIECE• Important role the lower levels play to prepare players for a
shot at varsity baseball• All coaches represent the program they need to understand
this• Willing to communicate to/with you and other coaches• Willingness to learn
School Administration
• Need their support• Communicate your expectations of
the PROGRAM
Players
• Foundation of your program–What experience to you want them to
have?– Communicate with them what you are
looking for in a player– Rules• Very few
– Communication—end of season meetings?
– Players that come back
OTHER COACHES
• Use other coaches to learn• Don’t have such an ego that you
can’t sit down and talk to another coach
• Marc Johnson, Steve Eaton, Joe White, Allan Dyer, Dave Mumper, Scott Bullock
