GALA PREPARATION: JUST OVER ONE WEEK TO GO!

The reality for public education in New Zealand is that schools are under-funded. Our

gala, the Kenakena School Festival of Fun will bring in much needed additional funding

to our school to enable us to run the range of programmes we do here; the Performing

Arts, Dyslexia, Boys Mentoring, Future Choices for Girls, Reading Recovery as well as

providing funds for physical resources including information and communications

technology. The funds also pay for the Life Education Trust programme and for

visiting performers.

You’ve seen the School Parent Network’s advertisements for volunteers to help out on

the day. We still have some gaps in the volunteer list. Don’t just think that someone

else will do it. Please become involved! It’ll benefit your kids.

2016 MELBOURNE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

The fourteen students who spent a week in Melbourne on our annual exchange

programme with our sister school Caulfield Junior College returned home last week

following a fabulous week of learning. Activities they were involved in were visits to

Old Melbourne Gaol, the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne Museum, Eureka

Skydeck and Queen Victoria Market. They also experienced the street art of

Melbourne’s laneways and spent time in the English-French Bilingual classes where

most of their CJC buddies do their learning. Our students have very fine memories of

these experiences and of the families they stayed with and friends they have met.

Many thanks to Assistant Principal Tina Buchanan for her meticulous organisation of

the exchange programme.

CAULFIELD JUNIOR COLLEGE WELCOME POWHIRI

Fifteen students from Caulfield Junior College in Melbourne arrive in New Zealand next

Wednesday ready to spend a week hosted by Kenakena families. The students, who

are accompanied by teachers Leora Yates and Isobelle Parigi, will be welcomed to

Kenakena at a whole school powhiri (Maori welcome) on Thursday morning (November

3), which you are very welcome to attend.

The powhiri will begin at 9.10am, when the group will be called from the waharoa

(carved gateway) at the Donovan Road entrance to the school. The powhiri will take

place in the courtyard between the school hall and classrooms 8-12. If you are

attending, you need to be seated by 9.00am. The Donovan Road entrance will be

closed from 8.55am to allow the powhiri to take place uninterrupted by people or

vehicles moving in front of our guests as they move onto the school grounds and up

to the courtyard. If the weather prevents the powhiri from taking place outdoors it will

be held in the hall with a reduced student representation.

If you are dropping children off late after 8.55am, please use the Arnold Grove

entrance.

TEACHER ONLY DAY

A reminder that our annual School Review and Planning Day takes place on Friday,

November 11. It is on this day that we review our 2016 operations and begin the

planning process for 2017.

This year our focus is on reviewing learning projects and professional development

and focussing on where these areas will go in 2017.

By beginning this process now and devoting un-interrupted time to it, we can begin

next year very well prepared.

Why does Kenakena School have Teacher Only Days?

The teaching team needs opportunities for corporate professional development and for

organisational planning and review. These opportunities are essential for enhancing

organisational effectiveness and professional practice.

When do we have teacher only days?

Teacher only days are held during the school holidays and during the school term. This year,

one teacher only day was held during the Christmas Holidays, one will take place on

November 11. When teacher only days are held during the school term we plan them for the

day prior to, or directly after a weekend. When the school is closed for a teacher only day,

the time is made up either through out-of-normal-school-time activities that the children are

involved in or by adding a day onto the end of the school year.

Why aren't all teacher only days held during the school holidays?

Teachers are already involved in organised work-related activities during the school holidays;

team planning meetings, management team meetings, professional development courses,

meetings with parents, resource organisation meetings and time spent on work planning and

assessment for the teaching programmes. In addition to this, teachers are often required to

attend night-time meetings and work during weekends. On days such as the school's Festival

of Fun gala day teachers came to work on a Saturday. They also come at night to help

supervise discos and on overnight school camps they are working twenty-four hours per day.

Teaching is a very rewarding but highly demanding job, and teachers need time to refresh

before the beginning of each term.

Page 4: KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441 ...kenakena.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Kenakena-School... · Melbourne’s laneways and spent time in the English-French Bilingual

If we are getting professional education consultants to work with our teaching staff, we have

to go with school-term dates if that’s when they are available. It is impractical and hugely

expensive to hire relief teachers for the entire teaching staff.

2017 ENROLMENTS

We are in the process of planning for 2017. If you have a child starting school as a

five-year-old next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school

office to let us know.

If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who are intending to enrol

their children at Kenakena in 2017, please encourage them to get in touch.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

Let's talk about

discipline

One of the best times for a

discussion around discipline is at a

family meeting. State the issue and

then ask for the kids' help to solve it

– the solution given becomes the

new family rule.

For example, you could state, “Hey

guys. I have a problem. There are

Page 7: KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441 ...kenakena.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Kenakena-School... · Melbourne’s laneways and spent time in the English-French Bilingual

no dry towels. They are all on the

floor in your bedrooms. What are we

going to do to fix this?” Some of the

kids’ ideas might be daft – they

might suggest they just shake

themselves like a dog to dry off –

but you will often be amazed at their

good ideas!

DENTAL CLINIC

The mobile dental examination van is onsite now to check all students and to refer

any needing further treatment to the Raumati Beach Dental Hub.
