KENAKENA SCHOOL FESTIVAL OF FUN!
Wow! What a day!
Kenakena School ran its 2016 Festival of Fun on a stunning Kapiti Coast day last
Saturday. The event was family-friendly, festive and definitely ‘fun’! The
entertainment, stalls, exhibitions and food were perfect for a good community
day. Many thanks to our sponsors (who we will publically acknowledge),
families/whanau who donated time and practical help, senior students who helped set
things up and run them on the day, school staff for their commitment and the Kenakena
School Parent Network organising committee (Michelle Mason, Louise Bell, Jade
Dolman, Emily Lester) who ran a really smooth operation. Ka pai! Tino pai!
Check out Kenakena School on Facebook for many more photographs of the day.
At this stage it looks as if the financial gain was around $20 000. Like many big
community events we are dependent on sponsorship to ensure they are financially
viable. I would like to thank the following businesses, organisations and schools that
support Kenakena in our staging of this event:
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE
Last week two teams of Year 7 & 8 students entered the Epro8 competition at
Paraparaumu Beach School. Epro8 is a Science and Technology competition that
involves students’ doing challenges to gain points. The challenges relate to
Electronics, Construction and Engineering, Vehicles, Inventions and
Experimentation. Each team has a station of equipment that they use to complete
any of the challenges. Our two teams both attempted the most complex task first as
they went for the most points. They referred to the competition as “brain fry”. The
competition had a great atmosphere with buzzers going off when a group had
finished a challenge and music blaring throughout the hall. At times our teams were
first and second on the leaders table, but by the end of the evening they hadn’t
secured a placing. They all had fun and demonstrated a high level of perseverance.
The boys’ team was 'Theee Crunchy Biscuits'
Sam Teitelbaum, Conal Forgan, Alex Linstrom, Sean Moody
The girls team was 'Perfect Power Puff Peeps'
Katie Kirby, Amelia Feaunati, Rachel Cowie and Genevieve Kunz
GOOD NEWS!

CAULFIELD JUNIOR COLLEGE VISIT
The fifteen students from our Melbourne sister school, Caulfield Junior College depart
for home today after spending a successful week at Kenakena. Following the powhiri
(welcome) last Thursday the CJC kids did some harakeke (flax weaving) with Whaea
Dee Ashby, spent a day on Kapiti Island and walked to the summit (Tuteremoana),
visited Pataka Museum in Porirua, Weta Workshop and the National War Memorial.
They also spent some time in Kenakena classrooms and enjoyed a range of
experiences and activities organised by their host families.
It has been a pleasure hosting the CJC students and their accompanying teachers
Leora and Isabel, who liaised with Kenakena Assistant Principal Tina Buchanan to
organise the exchange programme. Ka pai! Tino pai!
After 13 years, the student exchange programme between our two schools is as strong
as ever.

AMBULANCE VISIT TO KOWHAI SYNDICATE
As part of their topic “People Who Help Us” parent Blake Larson brought an ambulance
to school on Tuesday for the children to see.
2 students from Rm 8 would like to share their creative writing with you:
DIE TO DEATH
Blake came to school. He checked my heart and then the siren went weeewooo.
The sirens were red as blood and the sirens were loud as thunder and lightning.
Blake showed his equipment and machines, tools and a notepad.
It was interesting learning about how a paramedic helps us.

NE NOW 111 EMERGENCY
On Tuesday 8th of November a guy called Blake came to our school. He’s a Paramedic.
A Paramedic is like a Nurse not a Doctor but drives an ambulance!
He told us about his job he said he helps us if we had a terrible accident like your heart
stops beating that is something that may happen to some unlucky people. The thing
that makes it start again is called a defibrillator it zaps your heart and makes it start
beating again so you definitely do not die, well…err…maybe not definitely um… you
will die…of old age.
Anyway it was super cool to have Blake come. He had a really biiiiig bag it has a load
of equipment like a stethoscope or bandage or breathy thing or a whatever it was real
cool to have Blake at Kenakena School

BOOK FAIR
The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the library each day before and after
school and lunchtimes from Thursday 17th November until Friday 25th
November. There will be a lovely selection of books, so come and browse.
It’s a good opportunity to purchase books for Christmas gifts or holiday
reading.
Remember that 20% of the money spent comes back to the school in the way of more
beautiful books for our own library.
NEXT BYOD ROLL-OUT The first roll-out of Chromebooks to Kapiti Students has gone well and we have 46 Kenakena students who have taken advantage of this (as well as many who have purchased outright from a retailer of their choice). The next roll-out is scheduled for 22nd November with Expressions of Interest due in by 18th November. This will be the roll-out closest to the start of 2017 as well. An Expression of Interest Form is attached to this newsletter and they can be emailed to [email protected]. Information regarding pricing, specifications and the Trust is available at http://whetrust.weebly.com/payment-options.html BUILDER NEEDED

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Do your kids have
tidying skills?
John Cowan asked a tidy looking
grandmother next to him on the
plane the other day what she did to
instill tidiness in her tidy looking
granddaughter sitting next to her.
Her tips -
1. “De-clutter their world. If they
don’t use it, or if they don’t love it,
sell it on Trade Me.
2. Turn clean-ups into treasure
hunts – emphasise the delight in
finding old toys and books they can
enjoy again (or sell!).
3. Make tidiness a condition on
outings – ‘We’ll play in the park
when your room is clean.’
4. And finally, get a dog. They eat
anything that falls on the floor.”
A wise grandma.
DENTAL CLINIC
The mobile dental examination van is onsite now to check all students and to refer

HELP SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE
COASTLINES MOBILE PHONE APPEAL IN OUR
SCHOOL
It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy
boxes and bring into School any unwanted mobile phones you may
have. Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and
the environment benefits too by keeping our landfills free of mobile
phones and their array of hazardous toxic
substances. Please drop any unwanted
mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the reception
area at School.
As this is a school community newsletter, please let the school office know of any successes that your child/children may have
had outside the school. We are only too happy to share their achievements. The Board of Trustees in no way validates or endorses services/products advertised.
