Keep moving!by Henk Hofman

Not so long ago I spoke to Albert Hendrikse about the posive developments in the past year within Nijhof-Was-sink. “No maer what, we must keep moving,” he said, “and seek new opportuni-es, otherwise we risk losing ground!”

Aer this conversaon I thought back to the concept of “keeping moving” and its meaning in a number of dif-ferent situaons. Just to give some examples, it almost doesn’t maer what the complaint is, our doctors tell us to keep moving! And in our industry our main acvi-ty is to move and keep mov-ing the goods all over Europe and the rest of the world.

For every company it is es-senal to be dynamic and keep seeking new challenges with an open mind - inter-nally as well as externally.

It is said that in the next 20 years there will be more changes than in the past 40 years. This seems clear to me and I think that whether we like it or not we must make sure that we are well prepared and do not miss the boat. Aer all, changes are not necessarily bad for us! On the contrary, they also pro-duce new insights, encour-age us to remain crical and keep our finger on the pulse.

I am convinced that the co-operaon and open ex-change of ideas inside Tank-ceu certainly contributes to broadening our horizons and helping us in our search for new opportunies.

I would like to take this op-portunity to thank the Tank-ceu Board members for their input and enthusiasm, and not forgeng their me!

Finally, I wish you all a healthy, prosperous and dy-namic 2015! And above all keep........

General Meeting (Chemical and Food Division) Nice (F), 5 September 2014 by Petra Jongejan

The annual general meeng for both the Chemical and Food Grade divisions took place on 5 September in Nice (F). From the start, the loca-on of the meeng, the histo-ric Hotel Westminster on the Promenade des Anglais, crea-ted a great ambiance. On top the weather condions could not have been beer!!

Special aenon was de-voted on the agenda to the new regulaons affecng the transport industry in se-veral European countries. In parcular, concern was ex-pressed regarding standard rest hours for the weekend, which in France and Belgi-um may no longer be spent in a truck cab. The absence

of sufficient infrastructure, such as hotels near motor-ways where trucks with ha-zardous cargo can park, was menoned.Tom Mohn, the CEO of Moon-way, who was aending this type of meeng for the first me, received a special wel-come. He then presented the acvies and strong-points of his company.

In addion, regular agenda items, such as visits by the Board, recent meengs, the market situaon and an overview of the exchange of cargo between the members were discussed.Henk Hofman was pleased to hand out hard copies of the updated Tankceu Info Book, which contains a wealth of informaon about the Tank-ceu companies for the mem-bers and their staff. In the aernoon, Van Hool gave an interesng presentaon on

the company and the high quality tank and container trailers it produces, which it supplies to some member companies.During the meeng, the par-cipants’ partners were ta-ken for a visit to the historic Fragonard perfume factory in Grasse and the beau-ful village of Saint Paul de Vence, which in the past was frequented by many famous painters such as Picasso and Masse, etc.

In the evening, Van Hool sponsored the dinner in a nearby restaurant, where Mediterranean cuisine play-ed a delicious leading role. The next morning the group took part in a guided tour of the highlights of Nice. The programme closed with a boat trip that provided an impression of the beauful coastline of Nice and the sur-rounding area.

Slightly earlier than usual the planners’ meeng for the Food and Chemical divisions took place on 27 September, in Nice (F). The group was quite large, including a lot of new faces who brought new input and enthusiasm with them.

The first part of the meeng was spent with both divisions together so that everybody could be informed about de-velopments within Tankceu, the latest meengs, visits by the Board and new regu-laons in various European countries. Of these, in par-cular the new rules regarding standard rest mes for the weekend in France and Bel-gium are causing planners addional concerns about the right way to manage the transports assigned to them.

Tania Kaasila took part for the first me in a Tankceu planners’ meeng and pre-sented Moonway, the Turku (FIN) based company where she is responsible for opera-ons.

Aer the morning coffee break, the Chemical and Food Grade divisions split up and connued their meengs in separate rooms, where, amongst other things, the communicaon lines bet-ween planners and drivers, customers and colleagues were discussed. Jérôme Du-rand (Samat), Marn Ben-der (Curt Richter) and Stefan Walter (Georg Buchner) ex-plained to their colleagues how these lines of communi-caon are managed in their companies.Another important item on

the agenda was the presen-taon of traffic lanes by in-dividual Tankceu member companies where they could help each other out with ad-dional capacity or reloads. Aer lunch, small groups were created in which these specific needs and opportu-nies for cooperaon were discussed in detail.

The meeng closed with both divisions coming back to the main meeng room, where Gustavo Duarte (Paulo Duarte) briefly spoke about a trial in which his company is involved using natural gas instead of fuel tanks on their trucks. In addion, Hans Pe-tersen presented a project in which his company is ta-king part, which involves ice being scraped from glaciers in Greenland. The ice melts during transportaon to Denmark, where the water is boled and then shipped to China and Japan.

Henk Hofman thanked eve-ryone for their input, and in the evening the enre group again came together in a beach restaurant, where discussions connued over a delicious meal.

*** A few words about the previous general meeng of the Food Grade Division in Febru-ary 2014 in Kliplev-Aabenraa (DK): CEO Søren Tvede of Eurobulk generously offered to host this meeng and booked a charming local hotel overlooking the Flensburger Fjörde to ac-commodate the parcipants. Upon arrival Søren Tvede treated them to a culinary surprise dinner, which was a great way of kicking off the meeng!

The idea of having general meengs of the Food Grade Division at the members’ sites in future greatly appealed to the parcipants. Bruno Bertrand of Comata then offered to host the next meeng in 2015 at his new site in Feuchy.

Curt Richter SE: accessible tank container for presentation and training purposes

Curt Richter SE offers its customers and staff, and internal and external trainees a rare glimpse of an accessible transport container that was developed by the company itself. The container enables interested pares to dis-cover the details of and ways in which the container works, and become familiar with standards and special requirements.

It all started with an idea. In 2012 the technical manager, Wolfgang Imdieke, and the container repair shop and metal workshop teams in Cologne were inspired by the idea for this project and meculously devised the construcon plans.

Alongside the numerous technical quesons, the main issue was the way in which the tank container could be constructed and equipped in order to - literally - bring it closer to interested customers and staff.

Finally, in 2013 the moment had come: a disused mul-compartment container, which was sll suitable for vising purposes, was chosen. Over a period of 4 months the container was converted and fied out by the workshop staff. The interior was renovated and small exhibion panels were installed for displaying informaon materials at presentaons. The main improvement was a door serving as a side entrance, since not everybody would wish to climb through the manhole! A secure walkway made it possible to climb on top of the container and examine the tank fings and equipment from above too.

The tank container is now used at external appoint-ments with customers and also for training purposes within the company. We consider the wholly posive response at presentaons and the ensuing in-depth discussions to be a major success of this project, which was conceived and implemented by our staff.

As of April 2015 a second lane for the internal cleaning of food grade tanks will come into operaon at Kralowetz.

At present the interior of the staon is sll under construc-on, although the building itself has been completed. Plant installaon work will commence in January 2015. The new cleaning lane will include 4 stainless steel noz-zles for the simultaneous cleaning of 4 compartments and an addional nozzle for the internal cleaning of con-tainers. The water flow ca-pacity per nozzle is 100 litres per minute and the maxi-mum standard pressure is 100 bar.

Currently the exisng lane is used for cleaning both food and chemical tankers, but will be used exclusively for chemicals aer the second lane has been put into op-eraon.

From the middle of next year the cleaning staon will be EFTCO cerfied, which will allow Kralowetz to issue ECD cleaning cerficates. The internal cleaning installa-on has been set up by the German company Weidner, which is based in Schwä-bisch Hall, and which over 40 years has gained a great deal of experience in this area (customers include Kobler Muerstadt, Waschbetriebe

Graz, as well as cleaning in-stallaons in the USA, China & South Korea). The opening hours will remain the same:• Monday - Friday: 7.00 am - 10.00 pm• Saturdays: 7.00 am - 12.00 noonCleaning is also possible out-side of these hours by prior arrangement.

Payment can be made by EuroShell, DKV, UTA and several other credit cards. In addion, clean sanitary facilies, showers, washing machines etc. are available on site for the drivers to use.

Paulo Duarte trials gas-driven vehicles

Duarte has been asked to parcipate in a trial comparing the consumpon of diesel trucks with that of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) trucks.

So far their experience has been as follows:

Diesel consumpon • 33.11 litres / 100 km Average monthly distance travelled • approx. 14,286 km

Iveco Stralis (LNG vehicle) • 26.1 litres / 100 km Average CNG consumpon • 0.87 litres / 100 km (this tank is only used in reserve) Average monthly distance travelled • approx. 12,743 km

Comparison and conclusionsA scenario in which both of the above-menoned vehicles run approximately 10,000 km results in a consumpon of • diesel: approx. 3,311 litres• LNG gas: 2,610 litres

Advantages of gas-driven trucks• consume roughly 21% less fuel than standard diesel trucks• CO2 emissions are lower, so less pollung• engine is quieter• purchase price (€0.856 / litre) of gas is lower

Disadvantages of gas-driven trucks• purchase price per truck: around €125,000• truck weighs 100 kg more• engine is less powerful, e.g. when going uphill• range per tank is 700 kilometres (CNG and LNG tank)• network of filling staons is smaller (in Portugal only 2 or 3 gas filling staons)

I will report further details when the trial is complete and we have all of the results.

I have learned 3 languages: English, Italian and German, and these have really helped me to work in this big world! I studied foreign trade tools at the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, and I am currently also learning French through my work for the Groupe Samat.

I joined Samat Spain in 2012 as a chemical transport planner in the Barcelona area.

Apart from working, my hobbies include sports and I used to teach tango in Argenna, the country where I was born.
