    MAY BLOSSOMSGARDENING BY JANET HEATH

LATE spring is one of myfavourite times of the

year when trees andshrubs burst with

white blossom andthe new leaves are afresh green.

If you want a treefor a small garden trycrab apples (Malus) ona dwarfing rootstock suchas M26, that will reduce theultimate size of the tree to12ft (3.6m). The trees giveyou pink or white blossomin spring and apples orcrab apples in autumnwith good autumnfoliage colour. Crabapple varieties toconsider include JohnDownie pretty yellowand red fruit and lotsof pink blossom or PinkGlow with large plum sizedpink apples.

A shrub with pretty pinkflowers that will form amound of colour in earlysummer is Deutzia which willgrow to 3ft (1m) tall. Look outfor Deutzia x elegantissimaRosealind with deep pinkflowers or Deutzia x hybridMont Rose. Plant in sun orpartial shade in most soils.

Those with acidic soilscan grow Azaleas andRhododendrons. Both have

flowers in a wide range ofcolours but if you want scent

and flowers go for the scentedAzaleas especially those withyellowflowers.

If you are interested inperennials try the deepblue perennial cornflower,Centaurea Montana. It islong flowering, will flower

a second time if you cut thefirst flowers off and will grow

in most heavier soils but isnot keen on sandy soils.

Jobs to do in earlysummer includeplanting up pots withtender perennialsonce the frost isfi

nally banished!Sow seeds indoors ofFrench and Runner

    beans, Courgettes andCucumbers then harden

off and plant out in June.Outside you should be ableto germinate carrots, peas,

lettuce, radishes and otherleafy salads from mid

    May onwards.If you would like

more ideas of plantsto grow, visit agarden open under

    the National GardensScheme where your

open in May include TirleyGarth at Willington whichhas many old Azaleas andRhododenrons in this historicArts and Crafts garden(open 12th and 19th May).Haughton Hall at Haughtonnear Bunbury is open on 5thMay and also has Azaleasand Rhododendrons and
