What is a Co-Op? The International Co-operative Alliance defines a co-operative as “an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically controlled enterprise.” In other words, co-ops are in business to provide what their owners want, and they are controlled democratically by their owners.

• The co-op is the center of a vibrant, inclusive community

• The cooperative movement is strengthened • The co-op serves as an educational resource on

food issues • Our local food movement is equitable, robust, and

environmentally sound.

Green Tomato Grocery Cooperative - a grocery for us by us. In our initiative stage, we intend to be a member-owned grocery co-operative focused on our members and the community at large. We will prioritize convenient access to fairly-priced local and environmentally sound products supportive of healthy lifestyles. Through educational activities and events we will foster farmer-to-consumer relationships and awareness of our personal connection with food. Following the seven international values of cooperatives, we will practice democratic member control, act with autonomy and independence, provide education, work in cooperation among cooperatives and demonstrate concern for the community through local reinvestment stores. Do you want fresh, locally grown food, but don't want to give up the convenience of a regular grocery store? There's no need to wait for your closest mega-chain supermarket to carry the good stuff. Food cooperatives are worker or customer owned businesses that provide grocery items of the highest quality and best value to their members. Coops can take the shape of retail stores or buying clubs. All food coops are committed to consumer education, product quality, and member control, and usually support their local communities by selling produce grown locally by family farms
